- Voigtlander has released a brand new 35mm M-Mount lens. This time, it's an f/2 aspherical design with some interesting characteristics. We're gonna take a closer look at the lens, check out some example photos on Portra 400, and see how it compares to the Nokton f/1.4 that I currently use.

Voigtländer recently released a version II of this lens which has the classic focus tab and meter + feet markings. I own it and I have to say, it’s incredibly nice to use :)
My first and only M mount lens I have is the Nokton 1.4 because of you. Still the only lens I want and need! So thanks again, Matt!
I have the 58mm f1.4 voigtlander with Nikon SLR mount, it's an amazing lens, it never leaves my FA. It has the same characteristics as the 17.5mm Nokton on M43. The Noktons are a wonderful design with a magical look.

Love the Ultron range. I just picked up a 21mm f1.8 and I'm very impressed. Hardly any barrel distortion at all!
I'm using the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f2.0 on my Nikon FM2N and love it. Great build quality. So smooth. Great results.
Thanks for the review. There are two different lens hoods available for this lens. The LH-4N also fits and has a classical vented design.

I took the extra sharpness over the extra stop of light, I like shooting close and its usually indoors so being able to shoot wide open and have subjects at the edges of the frame be sharp was important to me. I've been spoiled by my Planar, nothing else affordable until now holds up to that lens. I wish we could lock the focus to stop at .7m but it didn't take long to get used to, if its at .5m and looks in focus in the VF lean in 4-5 inches and it's sharp on the film. The knob position for .7m is in a very comfortable position though so it falls there naturally at least for me, it does take some getting used to though

I have the Voigtlander 35mm f/2 Ultron II Black. Stays on my Leica M-P 240 all the time.
It would have been interesting to shoot your Nokton at f2 compared to the Ultron at f2, but I suspect the Ultron is a overall sharper lens since it is a more modern design and it's designed to digital specs. I'm amazed how sharp the Ultron is and I actually like the focus knob a lot. The hood is very well built and seems very rugged. It's a unique design and if people don't like it they can always find a vented screw on hood.

I just got a Canon 35mm f2 LTM from the 50. I bought it on eBay form a guy in japan so I knew I’d get a what he sold in the description. It’s bonkers how sharp the lens is. It has lots of swirly bokeh and oval bokeh in at f2. It also has some highlight blooming without fogging or softening the image. The only downside is the close focus at 1m.
Seems like a cool little lens - almost a halfway point between the Nokton and ColorSkopar 35 (my favorite Voigt lens ever). I don't really shoot rangefinders these days but a couple/few years ago I'd have been all over this thing.

I use a 35 mm F1,4 nokton SC VM on my leica Monochrome 246 ! And its just a joy dont know much about nokton lens in the video !

I bought the 35mm Nokton 1.4, Ultron 1.7, and Zeiss f2 and did a bunch of informal tests and I also preferred the Nokton 1.4. I just loved the look of the Nokton, faults and all. I found the ultra sharp and corrected looks of the Ultron and Zeiss to be too modern and clean looking such that I might as well just shoot digital on my Sony cameras.

Okay so here is where I’m at, currently I’m shooting the 35mm Color Skopar 2.5 and I love it, it’s given me great results and I love the form factor. BUT I’ve been on the fence of purchasing the ultron or maybe a 35 cron. But most of the time I’m shooting at f8 so I wouldn’t even really need any extra steps of light or anything. Sheeesh maybe I’m just thinking of things too much. Probably gonna end up just sticking to the color skopar! Wonderful review as always Matt, thank you couldn’t have come at a better time
I've used that style of focusing knob on cpl filters and had bad luck with them falling out and getting lost. I prefer the bearclaw style knob the best and don't know why it isn't offered on more lenses.

I have been a big fan of your channel for a couple of years now! I find it very inspiring ;) I have a question regarding the lens hood. I just bought a used Leica M9 and obviously, as a photojournalist, my first lens is going to be a 35mm. The Summicron is way out of reach for me (especially after purchasing the M9), however, I have seen the reviews about this lens and sample photos and loved it. I think it renders colours beautifully. I wanna get a metal lens hood for it that is rounded and ventilated (I love that look). Any ideas of online retailers selling that kind of thing? Can I attach any lens hood to the filter thread or I can only use the Voigtlander one? Thanks in advance for your help.

I just bought a Hexar RF and I need a lens for it. I'm trying to decide between this lens, the 35/1.4, the 40/1.4 and the 35/2.5. I'm inclined toward the 35/1.4 for the speed but I've read about people having problems with focus shift.
If you could choose between these, which one would you pick?
How is the hexar holding up? Still reliable?

big money you cannot. You can use the hood from the 35mm f/2.5 though.
Is the bokeh of ultron much smoother than nokton? I sold my 28mm that I have used for a long time and plan to buy a new 35mm. I am entangled between ultron and nokton ii.
Thank you very much for the review, Matt. I think that Leica goggles wouldn’t work with this or any other non-Leica rf lens focusing closer than .7m, unless the whole lens has been specifically designed to work with those from scratch. With my 1960s Summicron 50 DR e.g. it works such that a small metal barrier attached to the focusing ring stops against a protrusion of the center of its focusing scale at precisely 1m. To focus closer you need to pull the focusing ring out (= toward the front of the lens) a bit so it can be moved beyond the protrusion. Now you can fit the goggles into two tight recesses on top of the lens barrel. The goggles thereby will slide over, and press down, a tiny metal ball, which unlocks the close-focusing mechanism such that when focusing the lens to anywhere between 88 and 48cm, the goggles cannot be detached from the lens. It is a masterpiece of engineering that must have been as hard to design as it is to describe for non-native speaker of English ;-)
The goggles attached to 35mm lenses made for the Leica M3 are of a different kind. They only (optically) change the finder enlargement to the effect that the 50mm framelines now Cover a 35mm FOV.
I forgot to mention that, when changing from normal to close focusing, the mechanism of the 50DR changes the position of the rf framelines to compensate for parallax error. Yet still, you need to be aware of the actual FOV getting the narrower the closer you focus. Other than in an SLR or mirrorless camera this effect is not visible in a rangefinder, only in the image after it’s been taken.

Has anyone shot this lens and also shot the Zeiss 35mm f/2 or f/2.8? I have the Zeiss f/2 but am interested in a smaller lens. I just sold the Voigtlander f/2.5 because I always bumped the aperture ring when focusing as it was just a little small for me.
Biogon-C 35 is a cracking good lens. Small and light too.
Nargothrond i actually bought the 35mm f/2.8 and it is my favorite lens currently.

The main difference is a tab version that little notch. The lens is the same, as far i know. Also, there's ft as well as meter measurement
My M10 seems to couple much closer than my M2, anyone got some clue about how M10 works with this lens' MFD?

using iso 400 in bright day, i got issues as my max shutter speed just 1/1000, and use large aperture like f16 still underexpose. what should i do, beside using nd filter?
With the "Sunny 16" rule, a sufficient exposure for ISO 400 on a bright day (EV 15) you want to set your shutter speed to the ISO in this case 1/500 and set your f/stop to f/16. So in this case, you were likely shooting around one stop underexposed. I made a video a while ago on my channel talking about shooting with the Sunny 16 rule.
With ISO 400 film in bright sun, correct exposure would be 1/500 @ f16. So, yeah, 1/1000 @ f16 is one stop underexposed.
Interesting review... I came from a nokton to a summicron. Sometimes (not often) I think of switching back!

Wouldn't a .5cm rangefinder focus not be very accurate anyway? Since parallax?
Focus accuracy with a rangefinder actually gets better as you get closer, but yeah the parallax would make framing difficult

@@waldojpg It is ofcourse an alternative that I have done a good research on, despite not believing everything that you read on the internet, but it turns out that it is technically weak on most points that are important to me, unfortunately. Voigtlander 28 f3.5 is available at LTM, but it has become too popular and the price has risen in recent years. So yes, Voigtlander should come with a 28 f3.5 soon ;)

puzzled why the poster demonstrated the min focus issue with a Norton 35/1.4 on the camera when the video is supposed to be a review of Ultron 35/2?
The Nokton is a boss. Try the 40mm some time.
This is the only lens I kept for my Leica. I love it.
I was expecting to be tempted by the Ultron, but I have to say I like the Nokton look better. Makes me glad I never sold mine. The comparison portrait shot looks like the ultron would blow highlights on BW film.
The negative density is controlled by your developing time, temperature, and agitation; and this corresponds to your highlights in your final image. I wouldn't imagine that the lens would play enough of a role that it would cause your highlights to blow out. A yellow or orange filter can help control the tones of the sky. It is common practice to have to burn in the sky a little in the darkroom or post, as the most film has a wider range than darkroom paper. It is true that some shooters prefer older lenses or Voigtlander's single coated lenses, as they are less contrasty and give a flatter and sometimes easier to print negative.
Zach B I find it far easier to get a flat negative and add contrast as needed in post or darkroom. I have a beseler 45vXl with a universal 45 head and VC controller that allows a staggering amount of control in the prints, especially when split grading along with graded burn ins. Personal preference I suppose. I’d just much rather get a flatter negative to start with.
Hello, he keeps mentioning the extra stop of light the nokton give but I think its more than an extra stop and please correct me if im wrong but 1.8, 1.6, 1.4 its 3 stops of light not one
Those are increments of 1/3 of a stop. There is one full stop between 1.4 and 2

F1.4 vs F2, stop down Nokton to F2 and you'll probably see similar results.

i have the ultron 1.7 and had the nokton 1.4, sold the nokton because the ultron is much sharper, also at the same aperture, and much better in the corners, maybe sometimes too sharp (portrait)
Too much of this video is your face very close up and not the lens.
