This might not seem a lot but while oil is draining from oil pan if you remove oil cap and remove the old filter this allows air to enter from top to bottom helping to remove all oil as much as possible you can notice this as oil is draining.
Shouldn't you at first, untighten housing of your oil filter, before unscrewing drainplug? From what I know, you've managed to kept like 0.5l to 1l of old oil in the system.
That crappy K&N kit didn’t come with your secondary gasket on the filter housing- there’s one on the tip too. I use Mann OEM filters for our BMW’s and Liquimoly.
Hi,BIMMER ZEIT SAN. It's been a long while , and far from Japan. This is the first time in my life of my E39's oil change. I hope your video helps me .
@@BIMMERZEITT SAN Thank you for your "heartful" comment. Unfortunately I have another problem. My key fob doesn't work since a couple of year. Key fob makes 351Mhz wave? But E39 doesn't say "YEeeees". lol I'm at a loss about this problem now.

Hi, I have a 2002 530i and live in North Carolina. I have seen both the 0w40 and the 5w30 recommended for the m54. How do I know which one to use? Thanks
@@BIMMERZEITT In that case I guess it's worth spending the extra $50 lol. Thanks for the clear video too! Also wanted to ask you--I read on bimmerfest that you should "prime the oil filter" first before starting the engine. Do you not find that necessary? Just got my 2001 530i a couple months ago, about to do my first oil change.
@@Brisco1 yeah man the ramps are a great investment, you’ll use them all the time for DIY. I haven’t found it necessary to prime it but you could pour oil in the filter housing if you want.
Lmao, c'mon mannn..save yaself some monies and slide some old af concrete blocks under it and get ta werkz 😅 haha nah, but rilly tho i heard harbor freight had the jack stands you want ;-) Take safety seriously and youre likely to stay classy san diego!
my m54b30 consumed 5l of oil from last oil change which was 12k kilometers ago....do you have any idea why is that so? my mechanic suspects on valve cover gasket...did you have any simillar experience or did someone tell you about that problem?
+Clarence Callahan Hey Clarence thanks for watching. My car was burning oil due to a defective CCV valve, and is no longer consuming oil now that it's replaced. You should determine if your CCV is causing consumption, or if your car is simply just leaking lots of oil. There are several known areas for oil leaks as these cars get on in the higher miles! The valve cover gasket is certainly a common gasket to replace, I have a DIY for that here: ua-cam.com/video/XkNaNGtnyYU/v-deo.html The oil filter housing gasket is also a very common leakage area, as is the oil pan gasket. Have your mechanic inspect for leaks vs. consumption signs. You can check your CCV easily by doing the oil cap test, I have a video for this as well: ua-cam.com/video/vODpt5b2DsM/v-deo.html
Thank you so much. You're doing great work here - keep it up. I'm currently looking at buying an '03 540i from someone that took great care of the car. Would be first time owning a BMW. Makes me a little nervous but watching your videos gives me the confidence that I could do a lot of the work myself.
One other question for you. Is there a brand and set of tools you'd recommend as a good place to get started building my tool set to maintain the 540i mentioned above?
Hey Eric, I actually started out many years ago with just a $99 Craftsman tool set from Sears The Craftsman professional stuff is pretty good, and has a lifetime guaranty. My ratchet broke after 10 years, brought it in to Sears and got a new one exchanged at no cost! Pick up a metric gear wrench set as well, just slowly build your set of tools over time.
It doesn't help a first time DIYer at all when do not disclose the amount of oil needed by i6 engine. Basically, you've left out a lot of other necessary steps for this job. Now you've just waisted viewers time for the most part, having them go and now watch someone else's video for the missing info you left out. I'm not dogging your efforts as you sound hella young but trying to create a teachable moment. Make sure to do things all the way for optimal results, otherwise it's just waisted effort in the process. Your video editing skills are though.
Ouch bro, while literally no one cares where you go, you could politely suggest that the rookie p-brake it, chock-it, lock-it and unload it instead. Production value high, but i'd have liked to see a pt 2 video where he showed all he's learnt from the wise and *kind* older schoolers...unless he powed a piston or hotty-tottied the heads and learnt his lesson lol

Thank you for all your E39 videos. They have been super helpful in my over one year of ownership
Justin Lancaster thanks man! Happy to hear that!
It looks like you checked the oil level with the car on the ramps. I would contest this would give a false reading on the dipstick...

You are awesome guy. You are showing how to do it awesome. You're the best 👌.
Hey mate what tools did you use to unscrew the oil filter and oil drain plug? Can you tell me the specs?
Im in a situation where extracting the oil from top would be best. Would it be an issue if I did that with the M54?
is that oxford green?
I have a M54 2.5 litre. I guess the oil filter socket is 36mm too?
yes it should be the same

I’ve always used the 0w40!
I have a 2003 525i and the previous owner used conventional. Would I be able to use synthetic?
yes, you should use synthetic
BIMMER ZEIT awesome, thank you
do you need to remove the splash shield to get to the oil drain plug?
Does that filter work for a 530i 2001 E39?
Lubricate the oil filter gasket o ring before you refit oil filter
Great job bud.
If all I have is a jack can I use that to do an oil change? I mean I COULD go out and buy ramps, but why spend the money if I don't need to.
You need jack stands then to safely work under the car. Never get under a car supported by a jack alone. It can fail and kill you.
