This video was perfect for helping me get this done over the weekend. Took less time than I expected, and this was the perfect mix of not too long but not skipping anything important. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! Toyota wanted 800 to change my plugs. I got them for around $50, I also started on the hardest side first. So the passenger side was a breeze. Thanks again!
i just went to Toyota dealer to have my 2021 Taco serviced and the service writer said: "you need a spark plug change. is going to cost you $640.00. I was like: "I'll do it my self"
Excellent video. Took me about 2.5 hours, the majority of that spent on the driver’s side. Those brackets and the front spark plug were frustrating, but you saved me a ton of money. 🤙
Appreciate the video man! A few things I found while doing this. I’m pretty mechanically inclined so this took about 45 minutes. You don’t need to remove the rear bracket to get the middle and rear plugs out. Also I just folded the rubber foam piece cover the rear plug up and back out of the way. No real reason to remove them unless you just need the extra space 🤷♂️
2/12/2024……Just got quoted $883.34 for this job. 544.74 labor, 210.93 for parts , 69.88 misc., taxes……883.34 😂😂😂 Thank you for the straight to the point video. Going to tackle this myself. 😊
I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 v8 4.7l owned it since then. Oil changed every 5k miles, engines still run like new now 248k miles passed smog every 2 year. Regular maintenance any vehicle should last a long time 😊
Great video. I got the passenger side & the front spark plug on the drivers side done then came in to watch this video on hpw to get to the last 2 plugs. Most helpful.
@infosponge It was a breeze after watching your video. Side note, that rear bracket lower nut can be accessed through the wheel well. I'm 72 Y.O. but adamant about doing whatever I can on my vehicles myself to save money and the peace of mind it was done right. Tomorrow, a transmission oil change, differentials & transfer case.
Thanks for the video. I used to have a 2003 tacoma 4 banger and it was so quick and easy to change the plugs. Now I have a 2017 Tacoma V6 and what a pain it is compared to the older truck. Plus my truck is raised a bit so I have to get on a step ladder to do it. I hate the way it is so much harder to do simple maintenance on vehicles these days. My mechanic quoted $460 total after tax which is way less than the other quotes in the comments. Not sure if I will try it myself or just pay the mechanic.
@@infosponge I did it this afternoon in less than 2 hours. I have one of those ratchets that can flex in different positions and it made it way easier. My truck is sputtering when accelerating after changing the plugs. I was hoping changing the plugs would fix the issue but it didn't. It was sputtering every now and then prior to changing the plugs and now it is sputtering worse. The check engine light isn't coming on and it isn't a rough idle.
Years ago, you were called a mechanic if you worked on cars, now you’re called technicians, in the future you’ll have to be a freaking engineer to work on cars. This didn’t seem so bad, but I know some cars are much worse. Nice video. Thank you.
@@infosponge Heck, I just got quoted for $842 at a regionally famous MX shop to do mine! I'll be trying this myself. I don't get why they charge so much for a relatively minor (ish) swap. Maybe because people over-torque them on replacement? Thanks for the video.
Maybe a silly question, but do the spark plugs need to be installed to a certain spec? I don’t see many having issues I just don’t wanna break one inside and then need to rely on someone else
Hello, there is a controversy about which spark plug to use. I was looking into the following options: Denso (3491) FK20HBR8 Denso Iridium TT - 4705 Which one of the two do you recommend using and why?
The factory plug is the 3491 and it works perfectly fine so why change it. That said the smaller electrode size on the 4705 may add slight longevity and performance increases. I would just buy whichever one is cheaper at the time.
Is there any risk to doing it by hand versus actually measuring the torque? Also, do you know why people are saying that this is the toughest DIY? It certainly doesn’t look that way.
I have never torqued a sparkplug, I like to feel that I am not overtightening it. No idea, maybe they are afraid of the parts you have to move out of the way.
I have always installed plugs by feel, but I believe the spec is 13 ft-lbs. The gap is set out of the box but you can check it if you want, should be 0.032".
@infosponge gotcha, so 13 lbs doesn't sound like you have to crank down hard on it. I'm about to do my spark plugs, but afraid I'll tighten too much or not enough
Good stuff!! Do you by chance have the part number of the Spark plus you use? I’ve seen two online and rather not get them from the dealer as they charge $15+ for each 😵💫
I'm just trying to find a definitive answer on the 4705 versus 3491 spark plug dilemma. Both seem to work fine, but they are gapped slightly different and the 3491 is a little more expensive. I suppose it really doesn't matter but it's a bit maddening and I wish someone had some reliable info/data on the pro and cons of either.
Quick question, my 2019 trd 4x4 has 161k , I have 3” lift 275/70/17 Mickey Thompson BaHa legends, love em. But I drive 78-83 mph average in South Florida Ft 75 original plugs. I average 13.9- 15 mph will plugs definitely help?? Tnx Tacoma-boy SWF 😎🤘
Not sure how much they will help, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt. Either way they are beyond do for replacement. Could always pull one out and see what they look like.
You could probably do it in two hours or less. It took me a bit longer since I was filming. I also split it up into two jobs and the driver side and passenger side separately.
Its not hard. Something I noticed. There were two loose with oil coverage. Definitely smart to check them. On occasion. Also the mixed info on 60k or 120k. The engineers say 120k. The politicians say 60k cuz off pollution lol. I'll stick with the engineers. I was at 107k but it's a work truck. Was definitely due.
Came here to see how it’s done and was immediately blown away by the soundtrack. I don’t know anyone else who listens to White Comic. Good looks
Good to hear

I appreciate that!
Thanks for taking the time to record, and helping

Great video but there wasn't any mention about worrying dirt and whatever getting into the spark plug cylinders. Is that something not to stress over?
A little dust/dirt wont hurt anything, just be careful not to drop large items in the hole.
Great job on your video Sir, impressive
Thanks
Maybe a silly question, but do the spark plugs need to be installed to a certain spec? I don’t see many having issues I just don’t wanna break one inside and then need to rely on someone else
I’ve never used a torque wrench on spark plugs but there is a spec, I believe it’s 18NM or 13 ftlb.
just got quoted $580 for new spark plugs which is why im here hahaha

No problem
What tool did you use to unplug the electrical clips from the spark plug coil?
Just pulled the coils/wires from the plugs. Don’t recall removing any clips.
How tight do the plugs need to be? And do you need to do anything to them out the box?
I have always installed plugs by feel, but I believe the spec is 13 ft-lbs. The gap is set out of the box but you can check it if you want, should be 0.032".

Ay bro i changed everything cuz why not but now it idles up and down whenti turn it on
Strange, it could be a bad gap or cracked plug. If you check the codes, it might tell you which cylinder.

The ones linked in the description are the factory parts and what I would suggest. They are $14 right now on amazon.

3491 came stock so I just stuck with it.
Great video. I have 2.7. I'll assume its similar.
Thanks, not sure about that.
what is your mileage interval on changing plugs? I've heard it really should be done every 30-40K miles
Toyota recommends 60k
@@infosponge sweet Moses. I've got 120k. Guess it's time. Thank you for the guide!
I have 142k on orginals and having no problems but watching to change them before I end up with a bad plug at in inconvenient time
When your mpg starts to decrease.
Changed my old Lady’s plugs before they hit 120k, starts faster, runs smoother and responds better when you punch the gas.

So you dont have to unplug the wires from the coils?
The coils are connected directly to the sparkplugs, you just pull them off and set them to the side.
So you don't have to replace the coil pack when doing the spark plugs?
There is no reason to if they aren't bad. They should last at least 100k miles.
Good vid, but why is the engine bay so dirty? 😮
Just using the truck for truck things.
Great video bro, thank you

dude good video

A spark plug socket has a size?
Standard plug socket 5/8 (16mm)
What’s the torque on the spark-lugs
13lb/18nm
Is this the Atkinson engine?
It is.
How long did it take you to finish everything??
You could probably do it in two hours or less. It took me a bit longer since I was filming. I also split it up into two jobs and the driver side and passenger side separately.
Did you check the gap or adjust it?
Gap should be 0.31. They were all already that space when I checked.
How long would this take a mechanic typically
Not sure what Toyota says but I would assume less than an hour.
The only part you left out was how to get the spark plugs out of each tube. I used a telescopic magnet to get them out.
If you use a spark plug socket you don't need a magnet.
thanks man!
No problem, hope it helped.
Great job !
Thanks
Thank you very much!
You’re welcome
Isn’t the PCV on the other side of the engine?
That is where the valve is.
I change mine every 25k because its a $6 part and if it goes bad we are in trouble.
Nice job.

you have to remove the air intake and install new gaskets .
Perhaps I am confused by your comment but the air intake doesn’t have gaskets.
do you need to gap the spark plugs or do denso come pre gapped?
They are pre gapped.
You might want to check your brake fluid level. It appears low but it could just be the video.
I'll check, thanks
