  • Enjoy a virtual cab ride over Tehachapi Pass at the La Mesa Model Railroad Club / LMMRRC. This video was shot a couple years ago with a small HD camera mounted ahead of a train running westbound. Come visit us at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum (sdmrm.org) to see the ongoing progress as we complete scenery on the east end of our railroad.

    I grew up in San Diego. My dad used to take me to the old building before it moved into the current one. In the 1980s it was fun to watch the beginnings of the layouts, but wow how far they have come. Can't wait to visit again

    I love the wide open layout, so different from most model railroads with trackage running all over and on top of each other. This makes the train and trackage look like part of the scenery, possibly taken from a real-world location, instead of the scenery just being added to the trackage to make it more 'realistic.'

    These cab ride remembers me sitting as an Engineer on a hard working freight Train at Tehachapie Loop. I was a little bit shocked at 3:00, when three 'Goliaths' where coming up behind the curve! The Video gives a realistic impression of your wide country from the area as modelled. - In Germany we see often overloaded layouts like the famous 'Wunderland' in Hamburg. Our countryside here in the middle hills was well designed as the 'Modellbundesbahn' in Bad Driburg, now new in Brakel

    Thanks for posting. Last time I was there was about 7 years ago, and the upper loop track was in and running but no scenery was in place yet. They have really expanded it since, and the base scenery is coming along nicely.

    The LMMRRC is HO scale. The scenery is built with REALLY strong bases. I have personally observed two occasions (including one last week) when a QUALIFIED club member walked out onto the scenery to re-rail equipment on the Tehachapi Loop that was out of reach from the aisles. No damage to the scenery by this maneuver was detectable.

    Greetings from England,
    Beautiful back screen, looks like real painting was involved, well done. Great to see 'wide open spaces' depicted rather than a huge layout with masses of track work crammed in. Excellent. You may take the rest of the day off.

    Thank you so very much for posting this video; I've always wanted to see a cab-ride view of this layout as there are parts not visible from the viewing areas. I've been to the SDMRM a handful of times over 20+ years (and always gravitated to LMMRRC's and SDMRA's layouts). Sadly, I haven't been since summer of 2014. During that visit, I was graciously allowed a behind-the-scenes tour of SDMRA's SD&AE layout and it was amazing. Unfortunately I have my doubts I ever will visit again as my father (who lived in SD) passed from cancer 3 years ago and I live on the East Coast... Might I request an updated cab-ride video (to see what's changed)? Maybe a cab-ride video of the SD&AE layout, too? Thanks again!!

    This is a without parallel - certainly a lot more train than my little second hand Marx tin plate layout I was given many years ago. But I'm particularly interested in the structure of this build, I'm seeing lots of plywood and newspaper and expanded foam; considering the potential for fire wouldn't it have been better to use non combustible material instead, perhaps a plaster base material on wire lath?

    Okay, I admit I fast-forwarded my way through this impressively long trip, but I did not see any industries or switching opportunities beyond a couple of four-track (or so) yards. Did I just miss them, or is this layout very different from every other one I've seen?

      This is a prototype layout...most of the running is thru a remote area of southern California with no lineside business. Google "Tehachapi Loop"...It's a remarkable version of the real thing!

      The 'KI' Local worked Mojave-Tehacahpi and returned, some days could work as far as Caliente or Bena if there was work there. The main work for the KI was switching out the large cement plant at Monolith. The packing sheds of Edison and Arvin branch each hand their own switcher or road switcher which handed the work there. The SP Locals are covered in this blog post. nightowlmodeler.blogspot.com/p/freight-symbols-over-tehachapi-pass.html

    • @SAMaase614
      @SAMaase614  4 роки тому

      Hi David, I had honestly never heard of the movie before your inquiry. As with many things Google is our friend in finding an answer. It was apparently made in the 70s by Model Railroader and starred Hans Conried and Ward Kimball. Given Kimball's appearance, it's safe to assume it was an O-scale railroad. I would be surprised if it still exists. You can watch the movie here though: ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/model-railroading-unlimited-a-fun-film-with-ward-kimball
