17 minutes?!! that would have honestly taken me like 30hrs. Does the government ever ring you up like "yeah we need the best puzzlers to decipher these top secret Russian plans, assemble you best team FLEB"
Unfortunately, the Russians no longer us morse code, semaphore, ancient Greek, astrology signs, or crossword clues. They do, however, still use hexadecimal!
I think this is one of the coolest puzzles you've shown yet! And 17 minutes is way faster than i expected, it would probably take inexperienced people hours, if not days to figure this one out
I'm familiar with that machine, it's called Flipbookit. It was a really successful kickstarter a couple of years ago. This is by far the most creative application of it I've ever seen!
I would be interested in seeing a live puzzle competition, or a group of puzzle solvers working out a puzzle in "real-time" on this channel. I would find this interesting, since you continue to mention these types of competitions/events
As a person who has never heard of any of these puzzling competitions before, it would be interesting to see more videos discussing the puzzling competitions that occur in the US and how they're structured.
Which one, the Xbox puzzle or the Lump of Coal? Lump of Coal is probably about the same difficulty, the Xbox one was a bit harder. I have a few other puzzles from that competition, maybe I'll get a chance to show them later...
FLEB if you do these puzzle hunts with a large team of people how is it that you get to keep the puzzle? Or is that why you only have 2 of them from that hunt? Because you guys divide them amongst you? Sorry for the many questions I'm just curious. Seems like deciding who gets to keep what between die hard puzzle fans would be a difficult puzzle to solve in and of itself haha.
We always share the puzzles throughout the team. Nobody "owns" them, but we try to keep track of them as they move around. The reason I've shown so few is that physical puzzles from puzzlehunt competitions are fairly rare! In this year's Mystery Hunt, which had 100+ puzzles, 1-2 were physical in nature. I'm covering another puzzle from the Famine Games tomorrow, though!
17 MINUTES???? That would take me like 4 hours just to assemble all the slides and probably a half an hour to figure out how to even start, but you did have a whole team with a ton of experience!
That was very original and interesting! You know what puzzle I would love to see you crack? The Excalibur burr puzzle one, that is one little nasty puzzle for sure!
What a GREAT puzzle! I love that the process of getting from the beginning to the solution had that wonderful moment of realization. I was wondering if you could recommend some websites to get more involved with the puzzle scene. I would love to try my hand at a competition, or at least meet up with other puzzler oriented folks.
Sure! I'm going to quote another response I posted to a similar question on this video, if that's all right. They were asking about beginning puzzlehunts and how to get good at puzzles. "There's a lot of free puzzle hunts available! There's a whole archive of BAPHL, DASH, and Puzzled Pint, which are all good beginner hunts. Panda Magazine costs money, but is a good example of a slightly harder hunt (and the Puzzle Boat competitions are great for getting a broad feel for puzzlehunt puzzles). And the archive for Mystery Hunt, which is much harder (but also free!), goes back to the beginning. It's also good to practice logic puzzles and common puzzle types like cryptograms and crosswords. GMPuzzles is a great source of logic puzzle. There's a free Wall Street Journal crossword contest every week, which has a small puzzle embedded inside. Hopefully this is enough to get you started!"
FLEB that's really excellent. I appreciate it! I have a lot of twisty puzzle experience, and feel pretty solid up to Thursday NYT crosswords. It feels good to broaden my scope. I would love to see how your team would destroy an Escape room. The puzzles aren't as high quality as the ones you share on your channel, but they are good fun nonetheless!
Hey Fleb. About 7 years ago I think I bought a "Tetris Cube" Puzzle. I took it apart and have never been able to put it back together again. I don't want to cheat and youtube a solution. But could you maybe do a video on it? Not necessarily solving it, but how it works and why it works?
I actually live in Boston! Though, there are a number of puzzle competitions that run in simultaneous cities, which you could try! I run Puzzled Pint in Boston, but the Puzzled Pint in Chicago is also good, and run by good people! There's also DASH, which is a strange mashup of east-coast and west-coast style puzzlehunts.
I'd love to hear some of your team's false paths you went down during those 17 minutes. What were the ideas that lead you down the wrong way that chewed up alot of time?
One of the problems we had is that it's actually difficult to put the cards in the right order! So we had to rearrange the cards after we had put them all into the box, which is no easy task! We figured out the "aha" pretty quickly, so we didn't go down too many false paths with this one. Now the "Lump of Coal", that's a puzzle that we completely flubbed as a team!
Would trying to solve any of "Masquerade" by Kit Williams be to difficult, and to an extension: not a good video? I'd be very curious to see what you think Fleb.
I've actually never tried "Masquerade", but my impression is that it was written before people really figured out how to write puzzlehunt puzzles and so it feels a bit dated. I have thought about solving puzzles from "The Maze of Games" on video, as it's a spiritual successor in a lot of ways and I've really enjoyed it!
Are there videos of puzzling competitions on youtube? Something in the style of matt stonie's competition videos would be awesome i think, because you could see the processes in the team.
The main problem would be the timing of the different teams. Teams will reach puzzles at different points. Now something like the logic puzzle speed solving at the World Puzzle Championship would be doable! That's had live commentary in previous years!
My guess is that you spin the cards really fast and they blur into a word xD Honestly I'd fail at any of these puzzles....... edit: i mean i was close than I thought but still way off
Hey FLEB. I was wondering how one would acquire the kind of puzzle experience and specialized knowledge about puzzles that it would take to be a contender in one of these competitions. I consider myself pretty dang good at puzzles (compared to most people), but after going through a bunch of puzzle hunt puzzle examples, I realized I still have no idea what I'm doing. Could you maybe recommend some good resources for that kind of thing? I love your videos by the way.
Thanks! Like most skills, you have to practice a lot. There's a lot of free puzzle hunts available! Hopefully this is enough to get you started!
I believe this person's comment is referring to a top "related video" of "The Mysterious Cylinder Puzzle". This puzzle was invented by Wil Strijbos of The Netherlands apparently.
The cylinder puzzle by Strijbos? It's a great puzzle, but I've heard from someone close to him that he doesn't appreciate having his puzzles shown (he likes to keep the solutions secret). Out of respect for the designer, I've stopped showing his puzzles. I did show one of his puzzles earlier, before I learned this, which is "The Lotus Box". He's a great designer!
There was an app called Cluekeeper that checked answers. If you put in "DOTGAPS", it would say that it's a partial answer and that you should go further.
Thanks! I got some comments that said the intro was long, and I agreed. Generally, if something changes in the overall structure, it's because commenters suggested a better way to do it!
Just want to say that there's no such thing as "very unique". It's either unique or it isn't. Something that is unique is one of a kind and has nothing else like it (thanks gbay).
Your answer is not quite correct my friend. Wise old Owl is saying.... Twitter "PATE-ED" not twitter "Pat-Ed". So, in theory, seeing that this video was made in Mar 11/17 and for practical purposes we'll assume you solved it earlier in the day on Mar 11/17. Since I'm giving you this information on June 27/17, we can FINALLY SAY, your team, with some outside help, solved the puzzle in 108 days, and 17 mins. I'd call that, A BIG PHAT FAIL! lmao But, as always, that's just my opinion! :)))
Is your name really FLEB? Did your parents name you FLEB? I'm sorry but I'm a very pedantic person, and this is the tiny stuff in my life that annoys me. Not trying to be a douche here, it just happens.
17 minutes?!! that would have honestly taken me like 30hrs.
Does the government ever ring you up like "yeah we need the best puzzlers to decipher these top secret Russian plans, assemble you best team FLEB"
I can neither confirm nor deny any allegations of puzzle contracting work with the government.
You're with the CIA, understood.
Unfortunately, the Russians no longer us morse code, semaphore, ancient Greek, astrology signs, or crossword clues. They do, however, still use hexadecimal!
17 minutes! That's crazy fast. Looking forward to your next game, amigo.
It'd take me half an hour to just assemble them in order lmao
Thanks! Next game is coming this year!
WTF YOU MEAN FASTT!? I FIGURED IT OUT IN LIKE 4 MINUTES!! SMH
Wesley Fowler still, he had to find the frames that match, that would take a while
@I Don't Know I was just joking lol
Cool puzzle! Under 17 min to solve, that's really good!!!!
My teammates were very good!
what an ingenious puzzle! i'm excited to see more!
Dan Egnor did a really good job with this one!
Yes! I forgot to mention that's what it was in the video!
FLEB you are one of a kind. I never thought I would enjoy puzzle videos this much! Keep it up!
You should tell more stories of you competing.
I always find myself getting lost in the myriad of amazing puzzles here!
I'm glad you enjoy them!
THIS IS THE SHIT I SUBSCRIBED FOR!
You should do a video in the rubiks magic with the 3 circles, its an amazing and classic puzzle
I've actually never tried that puzzle! I'll have to check it out!
This one is quite simple compared to the one from The Famine Games, but I'm still amazed that your team solved it really that fast!
Which one, the Xbox puzzle or the Lump of Coal? Lump of Coal is probably about the same difficulty, the Xbox one was a bit harder. I have a few other puzzles from that competition, maybe I'll get a chance to show them later...
Ah, right! It's the Xbox one (I forgot that you had two of them). Really looking forward for other puzzles from the competitions though.
FLEB if you do these puzzle hunts with a large team of people how is it that you get to keep the puzzle? Or is that why you only have 2 of them from that hunt? FLEB Woo! So excited for another competition puzzle!
Congrats with your fastest time! Great vid as always!
Thank you!

I think I already said this in one of your other videos....but....all your puzzle videos are so intriguing to watch.
Thank you!
Very cool puzzle! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Another great video Paul, keep up the amazing work!
Thank you!
idk why I watch these but I can't turn away
I can't believe this took you experts so long! I don't even do puzzles! But maybe it's because I'm an animator that I understood it so quickly?
Very cool puzzle! Not too difficult, but quite a novel concept
You're blowing my mind!
Hey can you help me finish my 20 piece jigsaw
fleb u should do a video every hour i cant wait 4 next one
That's a pretty neat puzzle!
Nice vid! :)
Thanks!
Film a first solve at a competition so we can see your steps as you figure it out
I could try at the next one I go to! DASH 9 on May 6th would be the next chance!
this puzzle reminds me of the song: i wanna singa about the moona and the juna and the springa ( owl jolson )
Gosh darn i love this channel
Seventeen minutes. :D Was expecting something in the realm of 5 or 6 hours. Damn.

I did not understand what was happening the first minute, then I was like 😮
FLEB do you know the game "the witness". It is a game you would probably like allot.
Yep! I've actually met Jonathan Blow in person!
The Witness is my favorite game. Even though the game didnt exactly have a story, it was still fun.
I turn off ad block just for you FLEB
Puzzles and Solutions... I prefer FLEB more.
You did this in 17 MINUTES?! damn!
My team did! There were four of us. We did it in 16:44. The team that took second on this puzzle did it in 17:47. Times were close!
Hey Fleb. About 7 years ago I think I bought a "Tetris Cube" Puzzle. I took it apart and have never been able to put it back together again. I don't want to cheat and youtube a solution. But could you maybe do a video on it? Not necessarily solving it, but how it works and why it works?
Can you message me a picture of the puzzle?
hello professor.
I hope someday I well get the chance of finding the sulotion of the puzzle masters face.
It's in my first video (Hanayama Box). I'm not shy about it, it's just easier to present this way!
Really cool
I love yout videos you always have such an interesting games and puzzles on you :-)
Thank you!
cool stuff
Well done I say....wished I was there....
in regards to "puzzles" like this one, how is it any different from trying to make flat-pack furniture without the instructions?
Would NEVER have solved this!
It would be cool if assembling the box was part of the puzzle
FLEB you are awesome. Is there some puzzle competition near Chicago where i can come see you guys in action?
I actually live in Boston!
Though, there are a number of puzzle competitions that run in simultaneous cities, which you could try! I run Puzzled Pint in Boston, but the Puzzled Pint in Chicago is also good, and run by good people! There's also DASH, which is a strange mashup of east-coast and west-coast style puzzlehunts.
This seemed easy but I wouldn't have understood what to do with the the dot gaps messgae
I'd love to hear some of your team's false paths you went down during those 17 minutes.

FLEB that's awesome. Thanks for the resources!
Yes but can you change your own oil?
Before even watching you solve the puzzle I'm going to guess the word is twitterpated but I'll keep watching to find out
Unfortunately codekeeper is not available in my country..yet.

You should do the cylinder puzzle
Which cylinder puzzle?
I believe this person's comment is referring to a top "related video" of "The Mysterious Cylinder Puzzle". This puzzle was invented by Wil Strijbos of The Netherlands apparently.

Hello, human. I COULD SOLVE THAT PUZZLE IN 18 SECONDS!!! FUHUHU
Not if I glitch you up with a power of 2 trillion!
Did that even do anything?
Oh my gosh! I was actually right! Woah I'm a master
did the competition include the time it took you's do find the order the pieces go into?
Yep! It didn't include the time to assemble the animation box, though. But as soon as we received the cards the time started.
Your video's are fun to watch
Thanks!
It's pronounced "twitter-PAY-ted." ;)
Is it really? It's been a while since I've seen Bambi!
bryceowen what exactly does that mean?
Wtf_Pls_Stfu Thx it's the feeling of being/falling in love
I probably would have been stuck trying to assemble the thing lol
The actual animation box they gave us instructions for, but putting the pictures into the box isn't so bad!
Dan Egnor! :)
I thought it was going to take 4 hours.
how do you know that your answer is the final piece of the puzzle? I would have sopped at DOTGAP and be like "yes thats all there is to it"
There was an app called Cluekeeper that checked answers. If you put in "DOTGAPS", it would say that it's a partial answer and that you should go further.
I'm puzzled 😊 on SteamPower, FLEB is listed as developer and publisher. did your team have an advantage?
o_O ...
Hi fleb please reply it would mean the world to me I love your vids thank you keep up he good work
Thank you for your kind words! Happy puzzling!
FLEB omg thanks for replying so quick I'm so happy now you really made my day
FLEB omg I can't believe you actually replied you have really made my day I hope I made yours too
this is cute :)
Thanks Kek
why you cutted the intro?
nice vid :-)

My parents did not name me FLEB. It's a puzzle designer name I take on!
that puzzle was seriously shit. but your voice is amazing,
how pointless..
you always sounds so scripted dude
I'll try to improve that! I script most of what I say, because when talking about puzzles, you often have to be very precise.
FLEB I don't see anything wrong with it, you at least don't sound stilted, and I would even prefer that to vocalized pauses or extra cuts.
