These videos are amazing. it looks like he does it with no trouble and when you do it, you get headaches. its mind blowing that he does like hundred of videos of these puzzles. its interesting watching him ive been watching his videos for a few hours now. keep up the work FLEB
the long piece is 7 units long. because 7 has no gaussian factors, it can't be placed diagonally in the grid, no need to make an assumption there. what's your favorite puzzle that subverts expectations and assumptions?
considering that's the topic of the new 3blue1brown video, and the overlap between puzzle channels and math channels is 99%, I am not remotely surprised.
Prezombie I have actually got it from 3B1B, even though I don't regularly watch/subscribe his videos, unlike Fleb's. The only actual math channel I subscribe is probably ViHart
I don't know about Gaussian factors, but I'll have to learn about it! That would have been very helpful with this puzzle. Any resources that you know of that are a good introduction? My favorite puzzle that subverts expectations is "Dancing Shoes", which is one of the first puzzles I ever covered here. I still think it's one of the best puzzles I've ever seen! A close second would be "Blue Steel", which came on a floppy disk and was the first MIT Mystery Hunt Puzzle I ever solved! It's hard to solve the puzzle as it was first presented, but you can get a good sense of it here: web.mit.edu/puzzle/www/2006/puzzles/washington/blue_steel/
If a similar puzzle used a 3-4-5 triangle, you might hide a diagonal somewhere and add some complexity. Depending on how the corners were rounded perhaps. Carpenters regularly use a 3-4-5 triangle for squaring corners btw. It and its multiples are one of the few triangles that form a right triangle.
I'm trying to do one per week, and then one or two other videos about puzzles. That lets me focus on the puzzle a bit more, and I think it lends itself to better videos!
Somehow when I hear you starting the name "Jean Claude Constantin" I immediatelly finish the name with you and wait for an amazing puzzle :-) I like this one. My niece had the kids puzzle games with penguins on the icebergs, where you had 4 or 5 different pieces of puzzles (some of the pieces were even movable) and you had to fit them into the slots just like the guiding book showed you. The further in the book you went, the harder the game was. At the start it showed you how exactly put the pieces, at the end it showed you only the positions of the little penguins on the top of the puzzle and you had to figure out how to make the puzzle.
This is such a creative puzzle! It would've been even cooler if the hinges spelled something or made a letter, but this is a great puzzle nonetheless! Keep up the good work, Fleb!!!
I thought it was really neat! I feel like I should say, though, that I did not design this, Jean Claude Constantin did. I've seen people give me credit for a bunch of puzzles that I didn't invent, so I want to be more careful about explicitly calling this out when I see it.
FLEB I read that comment and it's not really a proof! It just means that blocks lengths 6 or 7 cannot be placed diagonally. In fact, it seems that only the one with length 5 could be set diagonally. I don't assume it makes the puzzle impossible, but it won't allow the rest of the puzzle to be placed nicely.
Would it have been possible to invert the layers ? It seems that using the layer you put on top as the bottom one would have been easier, as no pieces would have needed sliding under another one, only sliding over.
I know this video was made months ago but maby those metal circles that r there to keep each piece together also mean something in bar code or whatever the language is called
the numbers doesn't mean anything? i mean if it's only for measurements, it can be just start from 1 for each pieces. or none I thought it was meant to multiply or add when it sits correctly next to each other on the board
Thanks! I've collected them over the last 10 years. Some are from puzzle shops like Eureka and Puzzlemaster, some are from competitions and events I've been to, and some are small run puzzles that I've specifically sought out. This one I got from Puzzlemaster, and I put a link to it in the description!
I write a number of puzzles for different puzzle competitions. I covered one here last week, which I wrote for BAPHL 15. I've also written for DASH and Puzzled Pint. I also have a small puzzle consulting business which writes puzzles for a bunch of different types of events. I'll be covering one of those puzzles next week! There are a bunch of projects I'm involved with which have been in the works for a while and should come out sometime in the next year... so stay tuned!
Wow, what a great puzzle is this. I have some of the lock puzzles of Jean Claude Constantin and i think i will buy this one as well, so i did not watch the solution this time. Another great video, thanks! Nice surroundings by the way, did you record this in a park somewhere?
I think so, but I haven't seen a proof that it's the case. I didn't go through all the possibilities, but intuitively, I think it would be difficult to fill the grid any other way.
I always forget that name until I hear you start saying it. this is by far my favorite puzzle you've featured. theres something about it thats so satisfying
your videos are so intruiging becsuse your voice and tone remind me of a calmer version of Sheldon from big bang theory, which is a good thing because he's my favourite character
Yeah, this one was more visually accessible, so I was able to work through it mentally before you did your solve. A lot of puzzles that I've seen in UA-cam videos are something that require hands-on to really get anywhere.
Constantine rarely leaves anything without a purpose. Have you found any usage for the numbers on the sticks, or is your assumption his intention was to make it look like a yard stick.
If the official solution left holes vacant or had diagonal placements that didn't interlock as nicely as it clearly has here... it wouldn't have been such a nice puzzle. Id feel it was either incomplete or poorly designed.
It depends. You could put other moves in, such as making the 5 length piece a diagonal. It could be nice in other ways! I definitely assumed it would fill every hole though, purely because I trust the designer to make a nice puzzle!
Seeing it all snap into place was very satisfying. It would be fun to make my own version with popsicle sticks, rivets, and foam.
These videos are amazing. it looks like he does it with no trouble and when you do it, you get headaches. its mind blowing that he does like hundred of videos of these puzzles. its interesting watching him ive been watching his videos for a few hours now. keep up the work FLEB

what's your favorite puzzle that subverts expectations and assumptions?
I just today learned what Gaussian factors are and am so glad it was useful lmao
Prezombie (I have to admit I thought a very similar thing though haha)

i really like the way you describe your thought process while solving the puzzle. great video!
Another great video
Thank you very much!
This is so neat! Watching all of these unique puzzles being solved is truly interesting and shows their creative designs. Love it! ❤️
Thank you very much!
Wow !!! Never thought of putting that first piece on the second row... it would of taken me ages !!
Thank you for doing another physical puzzle. This one was fun to watch.
I'm trying to do one per week, and then one or two other videos about puzzles. That lets me focus on the puzzle a bit more, and I think it lends itself to better videos!
This is a very interesting puzzle. Absolutely fantastic! It reminds me of photo masking integrated circuitry. Nice...,
Really love the new setting!!
Thanks! Unfortunately, that was from a spot I was vacationing at in Vermont, so that might be done. I'll try to get outside more, though!
congratulations on hitting 100,000 subscribers. great content keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you very much!!!

Nice! That sounds like fun!
You're going to hear "Jean Claude Constantin" a lot more! He's probably the greatest living puzzle designer.
Well Done Fleb, You Amazed Me Again.
What a brilliant creative mind this inventor must have!
Another great puzzle! Looks like you are almost at 100k subscribers. Well done!
Thanks! Almost there!
almost 100k subs good job FLEB!
Thanks! We're almost there!!! :)))
It would be easy to tell if diagonal positions were necessary because the rivet spacing would be different than on XY sections.
YAY!!!! 100k!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!
Thank you very much!!!!
This is such a creative puzzle! It would've been even cooler if the hinges spelled something or made a letter, but this is a great puzzle nonetheless! Keep up the good work, Fleb!!!

Oh, I wasn't implying you did! I meant that if Jean Claude Constantine made it like that it could've been even cooler!
FLEB tgey gave u credit because u solved it easily like the creator would Ur a puzzle master yo road to 100k I hope ul nava leave utube
"And there you have it!"
best line of 2017
This video deserves the title of the let's solve
That was so satisfying to watch!
"if we assume all pieces go horizontally or vertically"
While probably impossible, I now wonder if there's a way to fit it in diagonally...
Evidently there's some mathematical reason why it wouldn't work? Prezombie commented about it in another comment.
Right, now that I understand it, it seems that the 5 could be placed diagonally.
Yep! Now I want to make a variant with diagonal placements...
FLEB Definitely post results if you do please! I don't think it'll work but... I'm really curious now
great video. would love to find a puzzle like this.
Congrats on 100k!!
Thank you very much!!!!
I like the outside setting.
I liked it to, but it was at the Weathersfield Inn in Vermont where I was taking a vacation. I'll try to get outside more, though!
Fleb remember me from 7000 when you reach 1M! Didn't realize I said flub previously ahahhaahh
IonKattTMCE same for me!!
IonKattTMCE me from 99k
I promise to, if you promise to remember that I'm FLEB and not FLUB!
FLEB no problem FLUB! Ahaha just kidding. No problem FLEB :p
IonKattTMCE I was here from 10k. Love you Fleb!
Would it have been possible to invert the layers ? It seems that using the layer you put on top as the bottom one would have been easier, as no pieces would have needed sliding under another one, only sliding over.
It is possible to invert the layers, but they you can't see the numbers! The numbers are only on one side of the puzzle.
Road to 100K subscribers! You can do it Fleb!
We're so close! I've been planning something special for 100k...
I know this video was made months ago but maby those metal circles that r there to keep each piece together also mean something in bar code or whatever the language is called
Most likely not but sill
6:01 Watch. It all falls apart on him.
6:04 Nevermind, phew.
Another puzzle i can actually solve 👍. Those are the best ones 😜😂
great vid!
love your channel!
Thank you very much!
satisfying solution, great job!
Thank you very much!
That's a nice puzzle, I'd love to try solving it if I had it :) anyway, when the new PC game comes out Fleb?
the numbers doesn't mean anything?
i mean if it's only for measurements, it can be just start from 1 for each pieces. or none
I thought it was meant to multiply or add when it sits correctly next to each other on the board
wonderful video dude! I already subbed and liked. how do find all these cool puzzles?
Thanks! I've collected them over the last 10 years. Some are from puzzle shops like Eureka and Puzzlemaster, some are from competitions and events I've been to, and some are small run puzzles that I've specifically sought out.
This one I got from Puzzlemaster, and I put a link to it in the description!
Great video Fleb! Have you created any real life puzzles besides from your game?
I write a number of puzzles for different puzzle competitions. I covered one here last week, which I wrote for BAPHL 15. I've also written for DASH and Puzzled Pint.
I also have a small puzzle consulting business which writes puzzles for a bunch of different types of events. I'll be covering one of those puzzles next week!

I recorded this outside of a hotel that I was staying at in Vermont. It was near a forest!
Would've been pretty mind blowing if the silver joints actually formed a certain shape upon completion. I wonder if someone could design that.
I bet they could! It would definitely be a harder puzzle, though.
Jean-Claude Constantin sounds like a kick boxing street magician.
Not too far off!
Amazing!! How long did it take for you to originally solve this?
Keep it up, FLEB!
Are you a fan of puzzle book puzzles? Like the PennyPress Variety kind?
The shapes of the over and under peices basically show u where they go immediately....
Jean-Paul Constantine. What a name!
Great puzzle! Nice vid! Is there only one solution?
I think so, but I haven't seen a proof that it's the case. I didn't go through all the possibilities, but intuitively, I think it would be difficult to fill the grid any other way.
I always forget that name until I hear you start saying it. this is by far my favorite puzzle you've featured. theres something about it thats so satisfying
Heres your baby ma'am what would you like to name him... IMA NAME HIM FLEB
your videos are so intruiging becsuse your voice and tone remind me of a calmer version of Sheldon from big bang theory, which is a good thing because he's my favourite character
Thank you! I haven't seen very much of the show, but I hear it's really funny! I get a comparison to "fun with flags" a lot.
What do you think about doing puzzles in games. It will probably get you more views because it's easy and quick to put out.
how fast can you solve a Rubik's cube?
HHH the gamer i asked him once in a live stream and he doesn't use algorithms he solves it intuitively, so he varies.
I have an average of 56 seconds it is pretty slow:(
Makes sense, speed solving has little to do with puzzle solving. It's more akin to a sport.
HHH the gamer lol I can't, I don't know why I watch this channel 😂
StakingBloom 442 How does one solve it intuitively? It almost always uses an algorithm to do the last few pieces.
this is really cool
This one was actually easier than it initially looked (to me). Still an interesting puzzle, though.
A lot of puzzles aren't too bad once you find the right way to look at them. Finding that, though, can be very tricky.
Your friends must love visiting you. I would forget what the time is....
HELLO FLEB NICE TO SEE YOU
HELLO GOOD TO SEE YOU AS WELL HOW ARE YOU
FLEB IM GREAT MAN I WISH YOU LUCK AND HAPPINESS!GREETINGS FROM GREECE!
THANKS MAN I WISH YOU HAPPINESS AND LUCK AS WELL. HOPE GREECE IS TREATING YOU WELL IVE ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT
WHY ARE YOU YELLING
The Cheshire Cat YOU ARE YELLING TOO
another Constantine puzzzzzle destroyed by Flebby
I think i want to recreate this using Technic Lego
I have an idea. Stand it up vertically. Ha.
*me when i watch this kind of vids*: i hate you i wanted to find the answer by myself!!
*also me*: probable never going to do this
I subbed but not going to watch the solutions because I want to do it myself 😂
can you solve a rubik's cube? I can but it takes me like 5 minutes I'm new to finishing rubik's cube.
al.ost 100k nice keep up the cool work
Thanks!
what magic is this?
Every time he says a fancy word, it speeds up. *the video is three seconds*
Did I say a lot of fancy words? Does "puzzle" count as fancy?
FLEB The way you use puzzle makes it sound fancy.
The "centimeters" are larger than real centimeters, aren't they?
If the official solution left holes vacant or had diagonal placements that didn't interlock as nicely as it clearly has here... it wouldn't have been such a nice puzzle. Id feel it was either incomplete or poorly designed.
It depends. You could put other moves in, such as making the 5 length piece a diagonal. It could be nice in other ways! I definitely assumed it would fill every hole though, purely because I trust the designer to make a nice puzzle!
This puzzle is the product of a troubled mind.
most puzzles are technically.
Amazing!
I wonder if the buttons make up a word in braille? Anyone here know braille?
Do the numbers mean nothing? Why do the numbers exist?
sw0rdz because after you figure where the pieces go
Your name is not actually Fleb. Right?
FLEB is the name I use while writing puzzles. It is not my birth name.
very interesting puzzle
I thought it was cool too!
"Rotatating" 😂
interesting puzzle!
I thought it was neat as well!
so close to 1Mil.
Just 900,000 to go!
New subbie 👍🏾
@FLEB 521 more subs to 100k good job dude
Thanks! Almost there! :)
are you going to do an unboxing or special video for the occasion??
There will be a 100k special!
FLEB awesome can't wait
passed 100,000 congrats
Cool.
I already know it.
my name is fleb
Yay
Would have been cool if the buttons say something or have initials of a name or word.
That would have been cool!
Omg u actually replied lol
Yeeeaaaaaaayyyyyaaaaaa!
Hi fleb love this new vid keep it up please reply
Thank you very much!
+FLEB your vids is so cool...i subscribe to your channel👍😀

Nice video, appreciate it if u would spare sometime and increase upload freqency ^^
I'm trying to! I just don't want to compromise on quality!
Don't fret bout the quality we love yr vids!
I bet one of Thomas Sanders' personalities would absolutely love this channel!
*cough* Logan *cough*
I love your channel but you need to learn how to focus the camera better dude. Seriously.
You lost me at "this piece".
U should watch an anime called "phi brain" .. enjoy :)
I'll check it out!
mi name fleb
w0w
omg at 0:53 lol
It makes the puzzle much more interesting!
turn off your autofocus ;)
I need to figure out how to do that. Believe me, it's incredibly annoying while filming!
FLEB I believe you! ^^
great content besides that though :)
keep up the great work!
FLEB what camera are you using ? I might be able to help
Mr. Puzzle is better you talk to much and explain obvious things even a 3 year old can visually figure out. Unsubbed.
yay
EARLYISH
nerd
first lol
Lol I would just use this as a fidget toy
