  • We decided to do something a little different this evening. Join us as we make the 26 minute flight to the "airport in the sky". Surrounded by stunning red rock mountains, the Sedona airport restaurant offers great food with beautiful views.
Co-pilot Kerry is back in the right seat and does a remarkable job getting us from takeoff to 8500' on course, in spite of my guidance...

One way to help her establish and maintain a comfortable climb rate
Is it get her seat adjusted and tell her to keep the horizon in sight. Then she can simply cross reference her airspeed heading and rate of climb occasionally. Before she knows it she’ll be able to relate that horizon picture to the airspeed in a way that produces a satisfactory rate of climb every time.

Love your videos from “ DownUnder” with my young son a GA pilot, fabulous to watch.
I was amazed at the start no one wearing seat belts in the car, mind you I see a lot on you tubers from 🇺🇸 not wearing seatbelts, I guess you don’t need to in USA, unlike here in 🇦🇺.......huge fines and demerit points on licence and as well, sadly we all have friends families no longer with us due to car accidents with huge kinetic energy leading to tragic loss :(
Maybe a me thing maybe, but 27,000hours in GA 🇦🇺 and flying Boeing’s Airbuses with dozens of airlines around the world, especially dusk or at night with the illusory “ the black hole effect” , its critical to stay on PAPI slope I would say....I think there’s been numerous GA and airliners landing short into forest... The PanAm PagPago B707, ChinaAirlines Manila B707, Asiana B777 SFO......
some real good info here...... hence it’s critical staying on PAPI slope all the time to last 100’ or so .... then transferring to the runway perspective to land within the touchdown zone....
Love your videos really really great, very professional from someone the other side of the universe

Hi Eric. I have you to thank... After watching a few of your videos, my wife and daughter insisted that I make a "less boring" video. Let us know the next time you're planning to be out west! Still trying to get the hang of Garmin Pilot and appreciate your input. I assume that you're recording the screen of the iPad you have mounted, is that correct? How are you recording the screen? I would love to pick your brain sometime regarding GoPro settings, batteries, etc.

    • @TherebyAir
      @TherebyAir 5 років тому +3

@@MalibuFlyer Haha! The same thing happened to me. When my kids were browsing UA-cam any time they came across one of my videos, they shouted "boring video" and skipped them! Any time I'm showing full resolution on the ipad screen, it's just a simple screen record. On the ipad pro, it's just in the settings dropdown when you swipe down the top right corner. There's a little dot there and that's the screen record.

I come in low on that runway as well. It’s short and high centered. Gives peace of mind. On 21 though there’s a bad downdraft. Runway 3 is always preferred for landing on variable/calm winds.

Hello! Thanks for sharing this video. Many years ago I flew with my wife into Sedona, and it was a memorable experience for us too. That day a group of steam engine aficionados were showing off their toys at the airport, so that was a special treat!
In addition to enjoying your trips I am very fond of the Malibu, not the least because of the true luxury of pressurization. I used to have a A36 Bonanza and I thought that was the epitome of single-engine development. But if I were to buy another piston plane it would be a Mirage.
Finally, I would respectfully suggest you adopt a pre-landing mnemonic such as "GUMPS": Gas (best tank), Undercarriage, Manifold pressure, P for Prop setting and Pressurization, and Speed. I don't recall you mentioning pressurization although you no doubt pay attention to it.
Thanks - look forward to your next vid!

Wonderful idea. If you ever get up to the Washington State area, check out Bremerton National, KPWT, and the Airport Diner. Friday night is Fish Fry, and Sunday Morning is Breakfast Buffet. Really good food, in fact, it once made #26 of the top 25 Fly-In Airport Diners (and was listed as such!) Much like the Mesa Grill, it's located right on the flight line, so you can see who and what's out there.

Hi Anthony. My father always wanted to learn how to fly. Cancer took his like before he could learn so I decided to do it. I got my PPL back in 1996 and have owned 2 planes (both Piper) and rented many since that time.

Oh common man that should be illegal every time you fly up to Sedona it’s mandatory to take a low pass through the valley first before hitting up the Mesa grill 😂

Couldn't see what speeds you were flying in this landing. Would you care to comment on your speeds, flaps and gear down during a typical approach ?

Hi George. I had a bunch of camera issues on this flight so I lost most of the content but I can tell you my speeds. I crossed over midfield and entered the downwind with gear down at 110 KIAS which for me is about 10 knots too fast. When abeam the touchdown mark on the downwind, I put in first notch of flaps (10º). Turning base I put in second notch of flaps (20º) and pitch for 90. Once I'm established on final, I put in full flaps (36º) and pitch for 80. I like to hold 80 all the way to the roundout.

Beautiful scenery nice plane. Disappointed to see that you copilot was not wearing a shoulder belt. You never know when it might be needed. It’s too late to put it on in an emergency. Hope you never need them.

I found out the hard way* in the pattern on one of my early solo flights. Yeesh!
(* not the ultimate hard way - just embarrassed )

Seems odd to wear seatbelts in the plane, but no one wears it in the car.
