After 10 months following your lessons, I'm able to play that song now after 2 days working on it,.Not as rich as you, but I can play it smoothly. Thank you.

Amazing video!! I’m a keyboard/piano player with 32 years on the semi-pro stage. I play, Blues, Country, R&B, Rock and Roll, and Light Jazz. Your thoughts on improvisation on guitar are also applicable to piano. (I'm sure you knew that!) I too have suffered with the “staleness,” to which you referred in the early part of your video. Phrases like, “I really suck at soloing” or “I must try to find licks I can use from other great players” are common with me. A local solid pro piano player once told me, "If all else fails, play the melody and by all means remember that a full bar rest contains notes as well. You just don’t hear them. Taking a full bar rest also gives you time to recompile your thoughts." You just reinforced what he told me.
I Liked and Subscribed. Thanks for the great insights!!

I can imagine this being a very clear and simple path to great soloing. As usual your thoughts are on point and consistent with everything else you teach. Your contribution to the YT guitar spankers' universe is a blessing - thanks bud.

There's at least a month foundational-level lessons in the Fingerstyle 5. It's worth a month of membership dues to check out. Or, have you gone through "Six Steps To Playing Fingerstyle Blues In E"? That course is here on UA-cam for free. Get through that and you'll do fine in FF5.

@@billallen1594 Well, you don't want to take lessons on things that you already know, right? FF5 is challenging, but it is set up so that all members can go at their own pace.

Further to my first comment, as a piano player I've tried copying licks from Oscar Peterson and Diana Krall. Unless I have their abilities, I'm wasting my time. I like your approach so much better. Thanks for letting me off the hook 🤣.

I agree with @budrub1. I've been taking music lessons for (cough...decades) and I have always struggled with "how do I improvise?" I've heard everything from "play the changes" from the Jazz idiom to "there are no lessons on improvising. just do it..."; neither very helpful advice. This is the first real explanation that I've heard that gives a solid footing on improvising and generating ideas. I'd LOVE to hear your additional "strategies" that you may give a neophyte soloist...

Ok…. The lead is as important as the vocals, sometimes maybe more so. To me it has to heighten the emotion of the vocals or there is no point to it, just let the singer keep going. It can be an agreement with the vocals or it can be an answer to the vocals. I know that sounds vague, but the basic idea is 'what do you want to SAY with your lead break? Think of a sentence you would like to say and play those notes…'
