  • Mazatrol Tutorial Programming CNC Video Part #2 Mazak T-2 T-3 Lathe. This is the second programmed part in the series. Here I am machining a part similar to a door knob or trailer hitch ball. The Mazatrol controller uses the tool file and tool data of the tools selected in the program to control the tool path.

    Watching this brings back so many memories for me, I used to work on the same machines with my dad who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, dad was trained at Mazak in Worcestershire England, he knew pretty much everything you could know about them including some of the hidden internal code.
    A little story for you.
    Dad was my foreman/supervisor and he had to train me on programming and setting the QT10-N with the T2 controls, programming to him was second nature so he was really fast, I asked "Right then old man, how do we start programming these things?" his reply was "Ok son, less of the old man, I hope you are watching cos I still have 4 other machines to program, right then you start with....." at this point, his words rolled into one, his fingers became a blur, and it was as if time shot forward at the rate of an express train, I had no chance of keeping up. Later that night he called me to help him with his computer at home, he showed me what it was he wanted to do so I told him to watch so he could learn, this is when the little devil appeared on my shoulder and said "go on, do it, doooooo iiiiiiiiit" with a few flashes and several windows later it was done and dad had only written down the name of what he wanted to do on his piece of paper, he looked at me with that puzzled wtf expression, I smiled at him and said "next time you tutor me on those machines at work, can you bloody slow down cos all I learnt today was, don't underestimate old men and experience" he returned with a big old belly laugh and "I bloody hate cheeky kids".
    They are surprisingly easy to learn how to program (as CNC programming goes) I never got the chance to learn how to program any other control systems to compare unfortunately, the rest of the machines in our workshop were from the ark and were either manual or pegboard.

    love your videos. as a hobbyist, i love machining. i think a good idea, that every one would love including my self, is you making a series over turning chess pieces. there small, we can use any material , so its cheap to play around with, and you can make each chess piece more complicated then the last one.

    Phil, at 10:34, you mention adding 2 thou to the FPT-Z in order to prevent a sharp edge being left on the chamfer, saying the tool will roll over the edge. Can you explain this to me in more detail so I can understand how that works? I’m having a issue on my parts having a burr even though there is a chamfer being cut on the edge. Thanks!

    • @GrImReApPeR99
      @GrImReApPeR99 3 роки тому +1

      The reason why you want to add .002 is because that makes the machine go back further than the burr that kicks up on the chamfer pass. I want to draw it for you because it would be easier, but think of it as at the chamfer the tool will go .002 past the end of the chamfer towards the spindle thus cutting that burr off. Hope that helps

    • @mazatroltipsandtricks6816
      @mazatroltipsandtricks6816  3 роки тому

      If you zoom in on the chamfer and run the toolpath, you will see the difference the .002 thou adds to the part vs not adding it.

  • @Captain_Hapton

    You may have explained this already, but Im still having trouble getting my thoughts around the concept of tool wear compensation on the Mazak. I was running a part today and I couldn't get the OD or the ID quite right. The OD was .005 over on the smaller OD in the front of the piece, but .010 over in the back. Then the ID was .020 too small.
    So, if I go into the wear and put in -.005 in the wear, that would make the lathe thing the bit is smaller, so it will take more off to compensate, correct? Then if I put in .005 in the wear, it would make the bit larger, so it would take off less. Am I thinking about this right, or backwards?
