- In this video we look at normal mating behaviour in monitors, including how to tell aggressive dominance mounting from mating and some of the unusual quirks shown by mating monitors.
It's so funny to me how she will only mate on the rug. Like, she's a dinosaur, but she wants to be treated like a lady, too.
Lol

Thank you!
Brilliant video yet again! Thank you for working so hard on these and sharing something so informative.
Thank you for another great informative video. I love monitors and your videos are the only ones on UA-cam I honestly care to watch and learn from so keep up the great work
Thank you!
The king has returned to bless us with knowledge.
These are the best videos I have ever seen on monitor breeding. I can’t wait for the others to come out. I recently have been struggling to get my female ackie to start eating again after cycling infertile eggs.
Thanks! Re: your ackie, is it possible she's retained some eggs?
perfection, also: it's been a LONG time since you uploaded.
I think the rug preference shows the intelligence of the monitor, familiarity and comfort with this space. If the rug was not there, the floor may feel to cold for her to be comfortable and they would not mate on the floor at all. They definitely seem to prefer a somewhat large flat space. Her options are the floor of the enclosure or the floor outside the enclosure. The rug offers excellent grip for their claws with no obstacles and it's a soft insulating surface that will not feel cold. She has chosen the best option all things considered, clever girl.
All correct.
Wuuuhhuuuu been waiting for this for sooo long 😉👍 thanks David
Thanks for watching!
Ty so much to show us this, very informative, great edition!!
Brillaint! REALLY looking forward to the nxt video.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Thank you for watching!
That’s a very interesting breeding behavior with your lace monitors I’ve never seen varanids looking for a specific spot to mate
You mean a specific spot to mate?
Yea sorry😂
as usual - amazing video!
Cool to see something new from you :)
When will part 10 happen
Wonderful series and narration. Excuse the dumb question, I'm not new to reptiles, but relatively new to monitors. I'm assuming that Ackies would also follow the general behaviours in this series. Are there any differences when "breeding" the smaller monitor lizards like Ackies or Green Tree monitors?
Thank you!
Regarding your question, that's something I point out in the first video: Most monitors follow very similar patterns when it comes to reproduction. The differences are in the timing of events (everything is shorter/faster in smaller monitors) and nesting preferences.
@@crocdoc2 Thanks Doc!!! Can't wait for you to add to the series!!!
Amazing video, very informative and cheeky!
Love the presentation style !
I have sent you a business enquiry via email.
I'll respond on the weekend!
Why do you suppose she enjoys the rug so much?
It's flat, open and has grip.
Much awaited
All good, now waiting for the other parts sir.
They're in the works
man can you make more of animation science videos like your videos of bee, python and crocodile and alligator they are so good.
I'm working on one now! Should be up in a couple of weeks
Yay new video
There is nothing like watching lizards having sex
Does the seasons relate to peach throats?!
They'd be more wet season/dry season rather than summer/winter.
These are the best Lace Monitor "Mating" Series Videos ha. These are helping & going to help alot when I do this soon. Don't want to flatter you too much but good stuff really liking these. What do you do with the babies Doc? I am in need, your Laces are absolutely beautiful, love their whole look.
I sell them, but I have moved house so I am not going to be breeding them for a couple of years. You'd need to live in Australia to buy them from me.
BTW, the series is on breeding all monitors - I just use lace monitors for most of my examples as I have more photos and videos of them than of other species
So you were in the States & moved down under or you've always been in Australia. Damn, yea I am in the States. Trying to breed a few species of Monitors. I've seen that haha because some other Monitors pop in your videos here. This is amazing nevertheless. Want to work with Perenties too but that's going to be tough here.
@@gman2478 I grew up in Canada but have been living in Australia for pretty much all of my adult life.
Perenties are a bit boring, TBH. Not a patch on lace monitors.
Ah ok I see well that's not bad tho ha. Not a patch on the lace monitors? Anyone you know then in Canada or the States whom has them? Any of these kinds? Yours really look Great tho Man. Is it a certain locality or? I'm sure Perenties are Amazing too. I see your working with them so can't be all bad. I'd make them a little more exciting haha. Spencers is another one too all 3 Bigger Australian ones. Spencers are actually popping up here but still tougher to find. Your a lucky man, Doc.
why'd u copyright strike my homie joseph
Because he used footage from one of my videos without asking my permission.
@Daging Ayam
@@crocdoc2 oh thanks for the feedback man. I'm a fan of both channels and was confused. Thanks for the clarification!
@@dagingayam8305 No problem!
hmm female crawling all over me will sure grab my attention
Fair enough!
Do you have a way of contacting you personally on breeding ackies i m whitnessing behaviour that is misleading and i m not getting good advise .
Thanks marc
You can post your email address (use 'at' rather than '@' so it isn't picked up by bots).

I really have to get one of those rugs!
Lol. When I moved house my friends joked that I should cut it into tiny squares and auction them off. The rug is still with me - I had it cleaned and now it is downstairs in my art studio.
Oddly enough I had a rug just like it that my ex's parents got for us at an estate sale. I was absolutely furious when I came home one day to find he had cut a giant hole in it to pull the cord of his laptop charger through it (his way of hiding the cord). Glad to hear you still have yours lol
Top quality videos as always. I dont even plan to ever breed monitors, but i love this series
They're so civilized 😂
Really long wait but worthwhile.
Been a busy couple of years!
Now I'm gunna have to watch the whole series yet again
Warm up the popcorn...
During breeding periods, will pairs require more food and need to be fed more frequency?
Do you mean mating periods?
@@crocdoc2 yes, oops
@@ice_2_no190 Usually they go a bit off their food when mating, but before the female starts a cycle she eats a lot (and needs to be fed a lot), as well as after laying eggs.
I’ve been waiting for a new video from you for my monitors on my channel great video instant like
I've been eagerly awaiting this, what a great surprise 🥰
Long awaited
Don't have a monitor, but this video was amazing. Great job! 🦎👍
Thank you!
Finally i can now have my non existing lizard fuck on the carpet. Cool video btw.
Heyyyy I’m so glad you posted this, I was wondering about this series, thank you
Very interesting!
Thankyou you’ve been kind enough to respond to most if not all of my comments your obviously a very intelligent guy and It’s been nice interacting with you
Thank you!
Five!!!!! Thanks
So what do you do with the hatchlings?
Sell them to people with the appropriate licence.
To be frank I found the topic of lizard penis good luck charms aback in part 1 far far more NSFW, but y'know You Tube logic!
I actually find it pretty shocking that most work in fantasy genre slams lizards with the 'monster' label when stuff like this
goes to show just sweet and amazing lizards actually can be.
I'm just thinking of that disturbing deleted scene in 'Not Amazing' Spiderman when The Lizard looked like he was going to rape
a woman in a bathroom stall. But than again that movie also convinced reptiles are the dominant predator in each owns
ecosytem coming from a man that claims to study and adore lizards soooo......Here's your BS slip movie!
I found this video a bit disturbing lol i’m also glad I didn’t find any disturbing comments
Funny how animal mating is similar across most species
I live in Alaska and love researching reptiles hoping to own and casually breed (not for profit but to provide possibilities for other reptile keepers both up here and in the lower 48) some in the future. I was wondering do these behavior signs apply to most and/or all monitor species (ackies, black throats, savanna, ect?) or do they just apply to Lace monitors?
All monitors. I mentioned that in episode one and every episode has shown other monitor species, not just lace monitors.
do they have names
The lace monitors do
@@crocdoc2 What are their names I'm thinking about getting a pair of black rough neck monitors
@@aydinmichaud4169 Alex for the male and NeLiSh (short for Nervous Little Sh!t, as she was nervous when young) for the female.
@@crocdoc2 Thanks
@@aydinmichaud4169 No problem!
I'm sold I want to get a lace monitor but I don't know where to start on some websites I see them and they are very expensive but I seen someone on facebook saying that he has one for $500 is that sus
Have you kept monitors before? You probably wouldn't want to start with lace monitors.
As for the cost of captive bred hatchlings, that will depend on the country in which you live. That price you quoted would be a scammer if you are in the US, but normal (or even on the pricey side) for Australia.
@@crocdoc2 I have kept large snakes before and chameleons I've been reading about diet and the basics of husbandry other than size of the bites or the whip
@@Th0tpocket505 Mainly it's the huge space requirements, feeding response and crazily-sharp teeth.
@@crocdoc2 I understand that part I accidentally interested to give him or her their own room
