Through my life...I pretty much watched the rise of David Bowie and loved him through all his multiple phases. I was a young girl of 14 when I first discovered him in a Melody Maker magazine and thought he was the most fascinating entertainer I'd ever seen. I'm now 65 and he still mesmerizes me to this day. I hate knowing he's no longer with us and creating his magic. Gone way too soon. Great video reaction!!
And yet, on another channel, one commenter was blowing up that the reactor was talking about the song and not just glowing about the singer! I'm with you though.
Bought this single by accident as a 11 yr old. I thought I was buying 2001 a space odyssey lol. Took it home a pop it on the record player and am like wtf. 😳 who the hell is this. Then I started listening and said wow not bad. Would sit in my dark bedroom with this playing dreaming I was major Tom 😎
“That’s why we listen to music.” Brilliant reaction to the masterwork of a true musical genius. A Day in the Life reference. Wow. Might be the best reaction video I’ve seen.
You should listen to "Ashes to Ashes" (where Major Tom makes another appearance). Also, you might want to check out Bowie's song "Black Star" (the official video). Major Tom appears in that one too. It warms my heart to see a young person learning to love Bowie. I am 67 years old and have been listening to him since 1969. I still have original vinyl pressings of his albums, bought so many, many years ago.
To have never heard Bowie before?? Wow! I've always loved his music and was fortunate to see him perform live. A legend, and a wonderful back catalogue to explore.
You would be richly rewarded by just going track by track through all Bowie's albums as the breadth and scope of his work will delight and astound you. His ability to change his look, his sound and his insatiable search for growth and education is unique in the world. David is the rarest of artists, a polished, unique, unfettered music will only inspire and nourish your appreciation of all musical genres. Can't you tell I love him - but his work is phenomenal - best reaction to one of his songs ever - don't just do the singles or just the popular stuff - the album tracks are magnificent.
I love watching people react to the stereo effects in this song. People who try to listen to it with a shared set of headphones (which I truly don't understand) miss so much!
David Bowie’s catalog is real deep... all his albums sound different... in other words this is one deep rabbit hole. “Ashes to ashes funk to funky we know Major Toms a junkie”
You should do a Bowie Marathon just as you did for Zeppelin. There are so many incredible Bowie Songs, many of which I have not seen any reactions for on youtube.
There are sooo many from Bowie to recommend! "Stay" from Station To Station is a personal fave. Those amazing vocals of his, and rippin' lead guitar! The song "Station To Station" kicks ass as well! Then he REALLY shows off his vocals on "Wild Is The Wind". And of course anything from Ziggy Stardust. Oh, I could go on and on!
Every album up to and including Scary Monsters. Plus Blackstar. You'll get the whole Major Tom story. I actually teared up a bit watching this, seeing the power of recognition for an artist who shaped my life. I'm so grateful for his music. I love your comments. Hope you enjoy your path of discovery too.
Great reaction..made me emotional about a song I've heard thousands of times... I was you in 1976. Some personal Bowie favorites- Width of a Circle Bewlay Brothers Rock and Roll Suicide Starman (try to watch video from Top of the Pops- great moment in rock history) Life on Mars (video is a must also) Lady Stardust Sweet Thing/Candidate Drive-in Saturday Young Americans Station to Station Wild is the Wind Stay Win Fantastic Voyage Sons of the Silent Age Sound and Vision Blackstar
You could jump into any period of Bowie's journey and find songs just as powerful, sad, uplifting. That's how amazing he was. He was my musical education and teacher from being a 12 year old arty kid in 1976 who suddenly found his tribe.
Kudos to you Emmanuel for really getting at its fullest extent and just that one first hearing, the greatness not just of this masterpiece, but that of the full body of work by the Spaceman during his time with us in this plane of existence. I will recommend ya "Five Years", "Rock'n Roll Suicide" ,."Wild is the wind" and "Lazarus". Only to begin with. Bye for now and keep up the grand acknowledging.
Bowie is my favorite artist of all time. You’ ve quite a musical journey ahead of you! Try Station to Station, Moonage Daydream, Aladdin Sane, the man who sold the world, Ashes to Ashes, so many great songs. Bowie did two sequels to Space Oddity, Ashes to ashes and Black Star... but watch the videos that accompany them, so much artistry!
plus a stripped down acoustic version of space oddity in 1979. The video premiered on Kenny Everrits TV show at midnight 31 dec 1979, seeing in the new decade. Shades of that video appeared in Ashes later in the year, and also shades of The Man who Fell to Earth in the 1979 /1980 video. actually the video I posted link to heer has been edited to include Ashes scenes which came months later. ua-cam.com/video/z5wMEqEuTTA/v-deo.html
Props to you for appreciating a song 60 plus years old. You also undetstand the meaing of the song because Bowie was facinated with idea of space travel. I have always loved this Bowie song.
You need to know how big the moon landing was and how much music was based on this. Crazy story : there was a pub in Birmingham UK called " The Man In The Moon " and the night the moonlanding happened the name was changed to " The man on the Moon " and drinks were free for one night !!!! crazy night
Emmanuel, I cannot express my level of enjoyment at your reaction to, Space Oddity. Music at the time of Bowie’s ascension was truly made up of ‘other worldly talents’, which made for spellbinding listening in many genres. David had enormous creativity and production skills, to bring about the emotions you experienced. Your sincerity was obvious and heartfelt, great job.
45 years ago I visited for the first time a Bowie concert. As a young musician I felt his talent and his incredible universe of music. I'm glad, to see you Emmanuel, reacting on Bowie's different layers of Art. Over the decades I discovered a lot of his hidden music jewels. They are not so popular but not less good. If you like, I'll give you a title or two.
If you can do some of his songs from his Ziggy Stardust days such as Ziggy Stardust and Rebel Rebel...also his song Heroes is a gorgeous creation also!
Good choices! I rarely recommend Live performances as a first exposure to a song, but the BBC video of "Five Years" is sublime! The slow drum intro and outro are so visceral. In a time of Pandemics and Climate Change, the song was never more emotionally relevant.
It's nice to see younger generations getting into David Bowie. This is one of my favorite Bowie songs. It came out when I was a small child and I didn't hear it until I was in college. The song blows me away. Heroes is a good one too.
Amazing reaction. I was ten when this came out. I heard it a million times. But your reaction, not the song, made me cry. Understand in 1969, space exploration was something the was hole family gathered around the TV to watch. The countdown, the walk in space, landing and walking on the moon. David Bowie recreated himself over and over. At 13, I had Ziggy Stardust pictures in my freshman high school locker. He was innovative, experimental and mysterious. But his message was consistent. Be who you were meant to be. His music spans almost 50 years so picking songs is hard but my all time favorite is the live performance of Heroes. There are a few versions out but my fav is Berlin 2002. Thank you for reminding me why my generation has the best music…. EVER. ❤️
Great reaction! The song Five Years has a somewhat similar feel to it and deserves to be labeled Masterpiece as well. The first Bowie song for me, it blew my mind. Oh, and Ashes To Ashes can be seen as the follow up song to Space Oddity (recorded 11 years later). It elaborates more on Major Tom's story, and also a great great song.
I saw him in concert in 1976, the Thin White Duke tour. Or was it Diamond Dogs? Had a front row seat. Wish I could go back and relive that night. I knew I was lucky to be there. I just didn’t know then how lucky.
A true genius. You'll find that Major Tom makes an appearance in later songs too, up to the last album of his life. I won't list those 3 or more songs here but will leave that a mystery, as you will certainly be hooked into this exploration of Bowie.
Bowie would appreciate your reaction, posting my reply it was 54 years after it was written, and people still marvel at the song writing and production.
The thing to know about Bowie's music is that it does not stand still... Indeed, he was so ahead of his time that by the time everyone else was about to catch up, he'd have moved on, renewing, adapting his style to new ideas, new concepts. A truly brilliant man!
I hope you became a true Bowie fan!! There's a lot of music of his out here on YT, I recommend all of it!! It's sad he left us so soon, he was one of a kind. RIP David!! 😥
LIke your´´e reaction. Love you!! I´m so pleased!!! I´m many years older than you. I suppose. I heard it when I was around 13 or so. 1969 Was the first moon landing. Yes I love this song since. An evergreen.
51 Years old and still a moving track.....i remember hearing this in Radio at teh beginning of the 70´s. I was only about 5 or 6 years old but this caught me.
If you want to hear a song with a lot of contrast to this one, please react to Win from his album Young Americans. It was one of his all-time favorite tracks he ever recorded and it's absolutely beautiful.
Also, I'd like to recommend songs that are equally masterful. As the World Falls Down Letter to Hermione The Drowned Girl Look Back in Anger Teenage Wildlife
Great reaction! Bowie never stays in one place musically which I love. This is early Bowie and he goes from more acoustic to rockers, to soul, to avant-garde artist. I personally love the many changes he goes through. Life On Mars, Rock and Roll Suicide, Lady Grinning Soul, Stay, Station to Station ....that gives you a good smattering of his talent. The sequel to this song is "Ashes to Ashes" although they are completely different song styles.
It was a stab to my heart when he died. This song is about his alter ego....drug addiction. He was masterful in painting a picture of space and so on but he struggled with drug addiction...he overcame but never forgot about his struggle yet in his last years he struggled with cancer. He is so missed !
This came out around the time of the Moon landings and after the release of the movie 2001 A Space Oddesy.... So many people thought it was going to be a time of frequent space travel.... But alas... We're still mostly all here.
First time seeing any seeing your reactions. You have no idea what you are missing with the legendary Bowie. He influenced sooo many artists. The world would have had very plain jane artists without Bowie... RIP Starman David. We miss you deeply. Thanks. Journey into his ever changing musical journey. It's magical.
Great review. These songs from the 70's were the soundtrack to our lives as teenagers. We often take them for granted as there was so much of it playing on the radio so often. I remember hearing this song on the school bus radio on our way to one of my baseball games. Sitting there, listening to the greatness only as background on a crappy speaker. I still enjoy David's mastery to this day and became such a big fan over the years, Too many songs to recommend. "Life on Mars", "Heroes", "Rebel rebel", "Ashes to Ashes", "This is Not America" with Pat Metheny. Just too much great music. Good luck with your channel!
The Moon Landing anthem! They looked in the 60s for people in the military that are pilots and aeroengineers to be astronauts hence, "Major Tom." It's not easy to become an astronaut that's for sure.
Oh, you are in for such a treat as you discover more Bowie music! Even the stuff that he thinks was selling out (the Let's Dance album, specifically) is incredible. If you want a real challenge with Bowie, try Tin Machine. I'm a die-hard fan and his work with that band took me more than a few listens to come to appreciate.
Through my life...I pretty much watched the rise of David Bowie and loved him through all his multiple phases. I hate knowing he's no longer with us and creating his magic. Gone way too soon. Great video reaction!!
The same to me, the first song I heard was Genie, his voice was so unique just like his looks. Got to see him in 2 concerts. God bless him :)
Miss him so much! ;(
Finally, a reaction that understands the song meaning and doesn’t just comment only on the singing. Thank you!
And yet, on another channel, one commenter was blowing up that the reactor was talking about the song and not just glowing about the singer! I'm with you though.
Right? It was great to see someone GET IT....❤
Canadian astronaut, Chris Hatfield, brought his guitar and streamed his version of this song from the International Space Station! It was awesome!
@Reginald Joseph bots
Thats some good shit my bro!!! Best mistake ever
I wouldn't want to dream I was major tom, but I see what you mean and it makes me think of moments like that for me as a kid
I saw Bowie many times during the 70's . . i think i was in love lollll . . BRILLIANT
Starman, Jean Genie, Suffragette City, Rebel Rebel, Changes, Life On Mars. There are so many.
The same as always 🙄

Moonage daydream life on mars ashes to ashes let's dance ziggy stardust so many outhere
“That’s why we listen to music.” Brilliant reaction to the masterwork of a true musical genius. A Day in the Life reference. Wow. Might be the best reaction video I’ve seen.
Brought bumps to the arms and tears to my eyes to see him react to a song I've listened to dozens and dozens of times... subscribed.

The best reaction Space Oddity so far... im enjoyed
To have never heard Bowie before?? Wow! I've always loved his music and was fortunate to see him perform live. A legend, and a wonderful back catalogue to explore.
2:11 that part always gives me chills and I love seeing people react to it David Bowie was awesome
Makes you realise how brave and pioneering those first cosmonauts and astronauts were...
Its the best reaction I ever heard. It is intelligent as well as full of feelings about this song, which is one of my favourite ever made.
You would be richly rewarded by just going track by track through all Bowie's albums as the breadth and scope of his work will delight and astound you. Great comment.
For me this is the greatest song ever. I know I can be wrong but just the way I feel when I listen to it, sad and happy at the same time.
Also my favorite song.
OMG! How could I not mention Rock N Roll Suicide from Ziggy Stardust! That song saved my life.
OMG - that’s my line! That song also saved my life, seriously.
that song saved a lot of people's lives
I love watching people react to the stereo effects in this song. People who try to listen to it with a shared set of headphones (which I truly don't understand) miss so much!
The best reaction by light years of this song out there. Thank you so much for such a beautiful and intelligent response.
David has a ridiculous number of incredible songs! He's in the top 3 or 4 most influential artists of all-time, for good reason! :)
Excellent 👌 Bowie the master. Regards from Liverpool 🇬🇧
David Bowie’s catalog is real deep... all his albums sound different... in other words this is one deep rabbit hole.

David Bowie, absolutely amazing artist.

Amazing reaction, the moment when you put your head down, and you realise you have been visited by pure genius.
Such a sad and beautiful song. One of Bowie's best.

He’s good if he’s got sweet thing.

I can't believe there are so many people connected to music that have never heard David Bowie or of David Bowie!!!!

Your enthusiasm is felt totally by all of us who grew up with Bowie...thanks so much
Everything Bowie did was beautiful.
This song can be so emotionally overwhelming.
I've listened to it many many times, and it always retains its emotional impact. A masterpiece for sure.

This song is very close to my heart. Thank you so much for listening to it, this has been my favourite reaction by far :)
Life on Mars by Bowie!!! A masterpiece!
Possibly the best reaction video I've ever seen! Subscribed and thank you🎶🎶❤️
Five Years, Life on Mars, Rock N' Roll Suicide

I love your reaction to one of my favourite songs of all times. This song is unique and a masterpiece as you say.

“Can you hear me major tom”
Just in my heart 😭
Bowie would appreciate your reaction, posting my reply it was 54 years after it was written, and people still marvel at the song writing and production.
Love your reactions! Yes! 😄
I am so glad you heard and appreciated this song. I've loved it for 35 years. Please continue delving into David Bowie's catalogue.

first time hearing I taught it was a boring ass music, now every time I listen to a tear came into my eye. Beautiful, perfection, Legend!
Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Live at Pulse. Wish I could forget this live rendition and listen to it for the first time again.
The thing to know about Bowie's music is that it does not stand still... Indeed, he was so ahead of his time that by the time everyone else was about to catch up, he'd have moved on, renewing, adapting his style to new ideas, new concepts. A truly brilliant man!
"This is why we listen to music!" Hell yeah man
I remember being a teenager and being blown away by this song
Try The Man who sold the world and, Width of a circle.
And Kurt Kobain does a great cover of “The Man Who Sold the World” too! I love both versions.
Greetings and much love from Illinois!
Great discription when he said it's such a visual song. Great lyrics
I hope you became a true Bowie fan!! There's a lot of music of his out here on YT, I recommend all of it!! It's sad he left us so soon, he was one of a kind.
RIP David!! 😥

I like very much you`re reaction, when the countdown starts. Yeah its a all time great, its simply beautiful.
Love your reaction,,,,you get it. Cheers
If you want to hear a song with a lot of contrast to this one, please react to Win from his album Young Americans. It was one of his all-time favorite tracks he ever recorded and it's absolutely beautiful.
Also, I'd like to recommend songs that are equally masterful.
As the World Falls Down
Letter to Hermione
The Drowned Girl
Look Back in Anger

Life on Mars live 99 in Paris is absolutely incredible. His voice literally is heartbreakingly beautiful. I feel it in every fiber of my being.

One of the best songs ever written. Period.
Stunningly original for its day!
Another good one from Bowie:

I don’t want to correct you. This song came out in 69, around the time of the moon landing.
First time seeing any seeing your reactions. You have no idea what you are missing with the legendary Bowie. He influenced sooo many artists. Piece of art. A Mona Lisa, a Guernica, a David, this is what you show to aliens when they ask: what's so special about you?
