Many homebrewers use glass carboys for fermenting their beer, but getting the beer out of a glass carboy can be a little bit tricky - which is why they invented the auto siphon.
In this video I show you how to safely transfer your fermented beer from your glass carboy and into a bottling bucket while being careful to keep as much oxygen as possible from getting into your beer (oxygen stales your beer and accelerates its spoilage - avoid it after fermentation at all costs!).
All of these videos are from my original website Home Brew Videos, which has now grown into our new website Lots Of Head. Please note this was the first series of videos I shot, so the equipment was pretty crappy and my lighting isn't great, but the quality improved greatly in later videos.

Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. I just began the home brew process and looking forward to brewing my own and bottling using these examples.

Pls. demo again with clear beer. Also, I noticed that you inserted the "main end" of the siphon with stopper into the beer first, would it be preferable to elevate the stopper to draw clearer beer and less trub?

My father makes his own wine, and he has five or six carboys full of it, and it's always a pain in the ass to transfer the liquid. I know what he's getting for Christmas!

My mini-siphon I got from Northern Brewer in a kit sucks. I can't get the thing started unless I pump it 18 times and the pump part gets stuck in the tube many times when trying to push down (like it needs wearing in). Then when it does flow a bunch of air bubbles get in at the start and end of the flow.

Thank you for the simple video. Question: When you pump again to get the siphon moving quicker I notice the air bubbles present. Is introducing this oxygen to the beer bad? Particularly in larger quantities?

Is there a filter on the end of the siphoning hose that you put in the beer?

mine done that way stirs the sediment. I need some kind of clamp that keeps the intake away from the bottom when starting the siphon and does not require constant attention.

when i used one of those, the gas in the fluid collected at the top of the hose. a big air bubble develops and stalled the siphon. what might i be doing wrong?

There’s a lot of folks saying on here that they bought a defective siphon. It’s not- you need to put your thumb over the end of the hose to create a vacuum!

Good video. My auto siphon looks very similar. Sadly my piece of shit doesn't work like yours. Guess I'll have to risk contamination. Old fashion way works like a charm.

Methinks you wanna make sure you get all the air out of the line to prevent oxidation.

Be certain that you pull up first, allowing the beer or wine to fill the siphon. THEN push down.
And make sure to use an extension hose that goes into a container LOWER than what you're siphoning from.

+eddy viera the auto-siphon has a barrier and pulls downward from about 3/4 of an inch above the bottom, so you don't get the crap off the bottom. The black rubber piece at the bottom of the large outer tube is the part I'm talking about.

You do both. Soaking helps soften the dried grime.

what's up get a seven spray wand and attach it to a garden hose or laundry sink with an adapter, it basically pressure washes everything away, often no need for a brush.
