In this video, I react to Madonna's 1998 album, Ray of Light, breaking down the album's lyrical themes and motifs. Subscribe for more music-related content!
Messiah from Rebel Heart album and Pray for Spanish Eyes from Like A Prayer album and Love Tried To Welcome Me from Bedtime Stories album and Falling Free from MDNA album and .... and...
That's a hard question for a fan 🤔 I would say Vogue, based on that that's the song I first knew about her. I would put Like a Prayer and Music also up there 😁
No matter how many years this album had, always will sound modern. The 90’s Madonna was so ahead of the game. Great reaction (you will be surprised with her work as a music performer)
I haven't watched a You Tuber analyze this album the way you have! You're a breath of fresh air. You have a wide vocabulary that I love. Another Madonna album worth reviewing is Erotica. I suggest you also do reactions to her stunning music videos. You're cute too.:)
“Ray of light” the Best Madonna’s album from so many points of view. Totally dedicated to her daughter and how become a mother totally changed her life and the way to live her life❤️
This album is a masterpiece! It was the birth of electronica into the mainstream pop genre. And is often listed as one of the best albums of all time for good reason! Loved hearing your lyrical interpretations. You really listen to what the artist has to say as well, and that’s refreshing! Hope you react to more Madonna... She is a true shape shifter, and each of her albums is completely unique in its sound and message. You should react to Confessions on a dance floor which is pure disco gold and another fan fave! Also check out her latest Madame X album! It’s an experimental global trip with a mix of different music genres, it’s truly incredible!
Little Star was written for Lourdes. She became a mother during Evita (she was pregnant during the filming of) and becoming a mother is what sparks her spiritual and motherly rebirth that becomes the basic themes for the Ray of Light era
I love that you loved “Skin”. It’s one of my favs on this album. I always saw Frozen as Madonna singing to herself. A song from her awareness to her ego.
Skin has always been my favorite on this album too, those last 2 minutes are just wonderfully bonkers! It's followed by the ballad suite of Frozen-Power-To Have.
Wow! I spent most of this reaction dripping with tears, I kid you not. I enjoy the Madonna song/video reactions that float around the Internet as people begin exploring her catalog, but yours is different. You pay attention. Madonna is a very deep lyricists and isn't given enough credit for it. This was one of her deepest albums emotionally and spiritually and I'm so happy you caught onto that...and also got into the 90s groove of it, too. I've watched so many of her own interviews during this time and she shared many of the ideas about rebirth, religious exploration, love and family that you caught...but at the same time doesn't tell us every inspiration...leaving us to make our own interpretations of the songs. And it was emotional when your interpretation matched mine so closely. One thing that is unique about this album that you mentioned was that she's very subtle in the way she expressed her political views. The albums where she's more explicit don't go over so well. Like I said, most reactions skip over the meaning of songs and just rate the "bop" quality. Thank you for such a deep retrospective and such an influential album. Other Madonna albums worth this type of analysis would be Like A Prayer and American Life! Though, I look forward to ANY Madonna reactions! Thanks again!
One of the best pop albums ever made. Every artist should take note from this and an album that everyone who despises the artistic aspect of Madonna should listen to.. like confessions on a dance floor.
I'm a long time/huge Madonna fan, and this album blew me away when it came out, especially because William Orbit produced. That's why it sounds so different than any other Madonna album. I think it's one of her (if not the) best. The first track Drowned World/Substitute for Love is one my favorites, and one that I played on repeat ad nauseam style. The entire album is good though. It's one of the few albums I can play from beginning to end without skipping a track. I still listen to it often to this day. So glad you finally got to experience it!!!
Oh, if I only had a camera on me when I first heard "Ray of Light." That song blew my mind (see the video if you haven't) and the entire album still holds up today.
Other Madonna albums to react: *Confessions on a dance floor (very acclaimed) *Rebel Heart and Erotica (underrated masterpieces) *Madame X and American life (experimental albums with social messages) *Music, True Blue, Like a Prayer (solid albums) *Madonna and Like a virgin (Lots of fun) *Bedtime Stories (A little boring to me) *Hard Candy and MDNA (too mainstream sounds)
If you're interested in analyzing another Madonna album, there's a lot of classics by her, but i feel like her most recent work, Madame X, is one of her most interesting outputs. It deals with a strong change in her life, new cultures she explored and the state of politics/the world as of now, similarly to Ray Of Light
I honestly wouldn't recommend "Madame X" for a new Madonna listener. That album is very experimental and different, and I think one needs to be eased into it with more accessible work and then build up to her more challenging work.
@@Gustyrd1 Hey man, I agree with you. That Madame X album was a poetic disaster. That album is a mess from beginning to end, and the usage of autotune on every song destroyed it. I didn't think she could make something as bad as Hard Candy again, but she did with Madame X.
I’m a channel jumper. Full disclosure. But I have to say, you have the most insightful analysis on UA-cam, as far as album reactions go. It’s very refreshing to see intellectual depth and emotional maturity. I’ll be checking out more of your reactions! Hopefully more Madonna, as she’s my lifelong muse. Excellent job.
Wow...You have a lot of that analysis spot on. on various interviews (at the time) she mentioned many of these emotions and experiences as a vehicle to this introspective Madonna. According to her this album was more introspective than anything she had ever written before.
Your reaction was Fantastic!! So spot on and made me rethink this album ! Thank you . Like a Prayer, Madame X and Erotica , I would love to see your reactions to.
great reaction. my favorite madonna album to this day. both musically and lyrically. if you interested in listening to another lyrically fascinating madonna album, give "american life" a go. it's also her most experimental production wise.
A Madonna fan for 37 years so it’s amazing to hear the intelligent thoughts of someone from a different generation! Bit late to the game but new subscriber here
Hello! Greetings from Argentina! Man that was a beautiful review. I loved it. Finally someone who really pays attention to lyrics and actually derive meaning from them. And in that subject matter I think you should react and review her albums "American Life" "Erotica" and "Bedtime Stories" because they have very good lyrics too that you will appreciate. I mean all her albums have great lyrics but those stand out. And they sound terrific too. I just subscribed by the way, this was beautiful.
love the queen of pop my favorite songs is ... Take a Bow oh father vogue love profusion Nothing Fails Hung Up Masterpiece Wash All Over Me....and moreeeee
That was a really amazing reaction! I really enjoyed hearing how eloquent, analytical and in-depth you were in your appreciation of the music and lyrics on this album. Thank you for that! Hope you react to more Madonna albums in the future!
I'm loving your fresh perspective on various Madonna albums. It's like listening to them again for the first time. For some, this is considered Madonna's best album ever. And rightly so. It's a fantastic record.
I've read a few comments but haven't see but this album was inspired hugely by the birth of her daughter in 1996. It gave her new aspect and a new meaning of love and fame. Drowned world is about finding her new path, one which includes her daughter. It's her new religion. That deep bound mother love she was finally experimenting and giving but also being scared as she lost her mother when she was 5-6 hear old so she never got experience that herself. It was an awakening for her. And if you have listen to bedtime stories, the title song of that 1994 album was a little glance of what direction Madonna was going to get into. She was really intrigued by the European electro trance pop music they were already doing.
Just been binge watching your videos and I just wanna say I love your channel. The way you analyze things makes me realize new things even tho I’ve listened to a lot of these albums multiple times haha
Excellent reaction - review, on point! I loved the depth, lawyers and analisis you elaborated to each song. This album is a true masterpiece! I would definitely watch your video reactions. Congratulations 👌🏻✨❤️
Also I recommend you react to Goldfrapp's album Blackcherry and Madonna's 2000 album "Music". You'll love the electro clash of early 2000s techno of these two.
Your reaction is such a breath of fresh air. You clearly have an extensive vocabulary and knowledge/exposure to many things, which only adds to your ability to analyze her music and make connections/references. I look forward to watching your other reviews.
Man...just LOVED your analysis. Very clever thoughts and I will definitely will be checking your other videos. Once in a while, UA-cam suggests good channels. Subscribed. =)
Your analysis is spot on. It is a liberated meditation on the realization that motherhood was what she was looking for all along. On a personal note, this album brought me through a really difficult time in the spring of 1998.
Wow! I so enjoyed listening to your review of this album and your interpretation of the lyrics. I love how you articulate and put such deep thought into your translation of the songs. By far, one of my favorite reviews. And you have such a calm presence. It’s very refreshing. I really love this album. It’s just beautiful from start to finish and you’ve given me some new insight to many of these songs. I am a new subscriber and look forward to more reviews! Sending hugs. 🙂 Stay safe!
Me three, Tori Amos & Madonna go hand in hand. Would love to see how you interpret Tori’s lyrics 😉 Start with “Under The Pink” or her first album “Little Earthquakes”. Tori is a brilliant composer, musician, & artist. She makes you feel what she wants you to feel, similar to Madonna in releasing the energy through music.
Binging your Madonna reactions now since I’m a new follower. So great! If you want future suggestions of whom to react to I’d love you to discover Belinda Carlisle. I’m having a renaissance with her music and persona these days...both from being lead singer of The Go-Gos to her solo career. Thank you for doing these. ☺️
I love that your favorites off the album are the same as mine. It’s such a beautiful introspective and spiritual album and vocally she’s at her best here.
I'm not a first english language speaker, I'm mexican and mi first languege is spanish, but I have to say that I really love your english and your accent. I'm almost able to understand every word that you say and your clean voice and articulation is wonderfull. Even you explainations about some idiomatic expressions are very interesting and good point of views about the songs features.
Yay you did it. This is definitely my favourite album of hers. I think you might like Alisha’s Attic. Illumina is brill but each of the first three albums is pretty dudey :)
Beautiful review! You MUST listen to Bedtime Story song... and the video is a mind blowing work of art... the full Bedtime Stories album is wonderful as well....
The songs following Shanti/Ashanti, specially Power of Goodbye and To Have And Not To Hold, deliberately incorporate the melodies/instrumentals of Shanti/Ashanti to connect them together as part of an associative concept
This is my all time favorite album, and I have never thought about the cohesion of frozen/power of goodbye/ to have and not to hold that way, thank you for that!!
Wow. You've opened so many different avenues about one of my favorite albums ever and I didn't realize that how much i was missing. Such as Frozen almost being sung to her old self. Brilliant
@@ericmason6540 You must do more such Madonna reviews! I wonder what else you may discern from some of her other most accomplished albums: Like A Prayer, Music, Confessions on the Dance Floor, Bedtime Stories and Erotica. Among her fans, American Life is the most divisive I believe. I personally don't place it in such category simply because the lyrics on that one can be plain embarrassing but would still like to hear your perspective!
Wow. Great work, Eric. This is my first time watching one of your videos. You really give a great intelligent analysis of songs...unlike other "Reaction Channels" on UA-cam that just nod their head and say: "Yeah, that track was dope"! You have a new Subscriber 😎
Ray of Light is one of my favorite Madonna albums (along with Music, which I would recommend analyzing it too since it's the follow up record). I'd strongly suggest to look for the Japanese bonus track from this album: "Has To Be", such a beautiful and deep song. And wow, I'm very fascinated of how you listen to the songs, your capacity of analysis and the meaning you give to them, keep up the great work! Loved the Kylie's "Too Far" reference, haven't thought about it but it does have its similarities (they were released same year I think). Looking forward seeing the other videos :) Nice background too!
I like that you made a comparison the Kylie’s Too Far. This album and Impossible Princess came out around the same time, and both are very similar in terms of introspection and experimentalism.
This is my first listening from you and it was quite an experience! How insightful! You deserve much more views, Eric! Could you please make this kind of analysis to the Something to Remember collection? You could use the music videos at the same time, since most of the songs were singles.
Eric what a wonderful and intelligent review, I was mesmerized after a 12 hour night shift working as a nurse in the UK. Madonna has so many dedicated fans all over the world who love watching younger people review her incredible body of work. I have subscribed and look forward to more of your calming and insightful critiques ... ps you are very beautiful lol x
I enjoyed your review so very much! You are very handsome, have a very delightful voice tone and a very rich vocabulary! Thank you for this delicious moment!
i came across your channel when MAGDALENE by FKA Twigs came out and I just got this on my recommendations, I have to say you’re truly one of the BEST reaction channels i’ve seen and your interpretation of the lyrics are always so interesting, if you’re interested in getting into Madonna more i’d definitely recommend American Life, Madame X, Erotica and Bedtime Stories! :)
So I’ve watched this and the Kylie analysis and you are so good at this (and cute to watch also)! There’s so many albums I could recommend (Alanis Morissette ‘Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie’ or ‘Gran Turismo’ by The Cardigans) but I’m sure you probably have a list down to your arm right now. Anyway, keep up the good work. I’ll try and follow you on social media
Hi !!! I just discovered your channel and your content is pristine!!! I truly love how you focus on the lyrical content. I would strongly recommend Butterfly by Mariah Carey that album is so personal and lyrically masterful
Sky Fits Heaven and Skin are my faves off this. I enjoy her voice on To Have & Not to Hold. So relaxing. Hard to pick only a few faves since this whole album is amazing!! Frozen is phenomenal too.👌🏼👌🏼👍🏼. Btw not the same child since her daughter Lourdes was an infant at this time I believe.
Loved your insight on this album! If you liked the introspective side of it, I'd definitely recommend reacting to her 2003 album American Life - her most underrated in my opinion, and sonically very interesting.
What's YOUR favorite Madonna song? :)
Frozen - the vocals, the emotion, the instrumental, the drama!
"Nothing Fails" or "Paradise (Not for Me)"
my most favorite songs from this album its Sky Fits Heaven and Skin
Messiah from Rebel Heart album and Pray for Spanish Eyes from Like A Prayer album and Love Tried To Welcome Me from Bedtime Stories album and Falling Free from MDNA album and .... and...

Mer Girl is a surreal meditation on mortality and the death of Madonna's mother.

You must do more such Madonna reviews!
This is mos def the best reaction I've ever seen. Please do all albums she's recorded so far!
Thank you so much! :)
Wow. Great work, Eric. This is my first time watching one of your videos. You really give a great intelligent analysis of songs...unlike other "Reaction Channels" on UA-cam that just nod their head and say: "Yeah, that track was dope"!
You have a new Subscriber 😎
Thank you so much! :)
Thank you so much! :)
Amazing álbum👑😍👏
I like that you made a comparison the Kylie’s Too Far. This album and Impossible Princess came out around the same time, and both are very similar in terms of introspection and experimentalism.
The Power Of Goodbye is one of my favourite Madonna songs.
This is my first listening from you and it was quite an experience! How insightful! You deserve much more views, Eric! Could you please make this kind of analysis to the Something to Remember collection? You could use the music videos at the same time, since most of the songs were singles.
Thank you so much! :)
You’ll See is the follow up to Take A Bow and it’s great! 👍🏻Her voice is strong on it!! Definitely a must listen.
Thank you so much! 😇 And thank you for the important work that you do!
@@ericmason6540 bless you sweet man x
I enjoyed your review so very much! You are very handsome, have a very delightful voice tone and a very rich vocabulary! Thank you for this delicious moment!
Thank you so much! :)
i came across your channel when MAGDALENE by FKA Twigs came out and I just got this on my recommendations, I have to say you’re truly one of the BEST reaction channels i’ve seen and your interpretation of the lyrics are always so interesting, if you’re interested in getting into Madonna more i’d definitely recommend American Life, Madame X, Erotica and Bedtime Stories! :)
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! 😇
Me dejaste impresionado. Que gran reacción a un álbum. La explicación de las letras. Bravo 👏🏽 mantén el buen trabajo ❤️ saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
Muchísimas gracias. :)
Thank You for your intelligent breakdown of this fenomenal album. Keep doing Queen Madonna 💜👑💜 Bedtime Stories, Madame X, American Life 👑 thnx
My pleasure! :)
Hi !!! I just discovered your channel and your content is pristine!!!
I truly love how you focus on the lyrical content.
I would strongly recommend Butterfly by Mariah Carey that album is so personal and lyrically masterful
Thank you so much! :)
This album will go down as Madonna's greatest album. Its a honest and spiritual album. Like A Prayer and Erotica are her other two great albums.
Dude. That was a pretty great review. Amazing how much you picked up on first listen...
Thank you! :)
This album is my personal bible 🙃
You are very intelligent, astute reviewer. You really get the meaning of the songs well.
Thank you so much! :)
Every time you look to the camera I fall in love
Loved your insight on this album! If you liked the introspective side of it, I'd definitely recommend reacting to her 2003 album American Life - her most underrated in my opinion, and sonically very interesting.
Thank you! :)
That's a good reaction. It's knowledgeable and in depth.
Thank you! :)
Mer Girl Forever ❤️
Wow! “Speaking to a past version of herself.” Never saw it like that. Wow.
I absolutely loved your reaction to this, can you please do America Life and then Madame X next ? Thanks mate
Thank you so much! I'll add them to my list. :)
