Out of interest, the equipment Sabbath were using then was a 60 watt Laney amp each (Geezer and Tony) driving two 4x12" cabs each (ie one stack each). It was so loud and clear I couldn't believe they were 60 watts but that's what they told me! Ozzy sang through a 100 watt Vox PA amp driving two Vox 6x8" columns! Bill was using one bass drum, one floor tom and one hanging tom! (Note the lack of effing and blinding from Ozzy in those days, he was a nice lad and it was a Youth Club!)

Hi Alex, you did a great job in taping this show! Thanks so much for that!
A lot of rumours are now going around. Maybe you can clarify, verify, falsify, or correct some of them? Here's what's said (not just by stupid people, but also by some well-respected collectors):
1.) The most popular rumour says that you guaranteed to the Osbournes that you never shared, and would never share, your recording to anything else; and that accordingly now, since the recording is all over the internet, you will get into big trouble (which I seriously hope is NOT true!). (This is claimed by some people as a justification why they never shared the Dumfries recording.)
2.) Other rumours say that you taped the complete 2 sets, and thus what has just surfaced is not all your recorded.
3.) Yet others claim that you also recorded 2 or 3 more Sabbath gigs in Dumfries. Is that true, and if yes: can you give the dates (write me a PM if you prefer that)?
Any comments of yours would really be appreciated! It seems that a lot of bullshit is talked about this recording, and has been talked for 10 years. Maybe you can help us to sort it out. All the best from here!

+Linda B. Number 3 first - this is the only show of Sabbath in Dumfries I ever recorded.Number 2 - I didn't tape the complete nightNumber 1 - I didn't release this recording to the internet and I have no idea who did, the Osbournes bought the original tape off me and I witnessed at least 5 copies being transferred to CD in a London recording studio that day ..... This was 10 years ago roughly and during that time I have had several enquiries to get a copy but I couldn't do that as the recording had been sold...... I repeat I have NO IDEA who by or how this has got out onto the internet after 10 years......

+Alex Wilson No idea how this got leaked either - but, thank you for recording this concert. This is truly an amazing concert. I may be incorrect in saying this, but was this concert what inspired you to start Iron Claw?

+Alex Wilson : Alex, do you recall what Sabbath played in their first set? I know it was a long time ago. :-) Some possibilities, according to Jim Simpson, were a cover of Jimmy Rushing's "Evenin'," a cover of T-Bone Walkers "Storm Monday" and "Fairies Wear Boots" (which was written and performed early on).

    • @ironclaw2006

No, what inspired me was seeing Led Zeppelin on their first tour, but Sabbath gave me the inspiration to start writing my own music.

  • @Danimal77

What's interesting is that they recorded their first Black Sabbath album on October 16th, 1969. This concert is from exactly ONE month after that recording session, so you're hearing them performing the same songs from the first album, but being even more comfortable and skilled at playing them. It would have been cool if they recorded these other cover songs in the same studio session and released them as B-Sides.

    • @karenpato1

When they recorded their first album....they went in there with the attitude of "let's just perform our set"...with the exception of Ozzy Osbourne singing in another room. A few slight tweaks and boom done.

Absolutely unbelievable. It's hard to believe this is from 1969. There is absolutely nothing else like this from this era. The only two things that come close are Pentagram's Bias Studio Recordings, which were recorded four years later, and Randy Holden's Population II, which was also 1969 and was as equally heavy, but an entirely different beast. Just incredible.

    • @Danimal77
      @Danimal77 5 років тому +3

There's A LOT MORE Pentagram bootlegs out there, such as demos and live and studio rehearsals from 1971-1973, as well as from Bedemon (from 1973) some Stone Bunny from 1970, both with the same lead singer from Pentagram. There's OLD Judas Priest recordings from 1971-1973 (both live and studio), as well as PRE-Judas Priest from members of the band, old ELF recordings (Ronnie James Dio's old band) dating back from 1957 to the early 70's. There's old Budgie recordings from the early 70's (some even with Judas Priest jamming with them), we have OLD Blue Oyster Cult recordings (both live and studio) from before they were even called Blue Oyster Cult, from 1970. They were called The Stalk-Forrest Group (under Elektra Recordings). We also have PRE-Sabbath live recordings with Iommi and Ward when they were in a band called Mythology in 1968. We have PRE-AC/DC live recordings from 1973 (With Angus and Malcolm). My God, I haven't even scratched the surface. If youtube is your only source, I highly suggest you dig around further. Try guitars101.com for starters.

It's most probably a small jazzkit but Bill makes it sound like Alex VanHalen's quadruple drum set. I was in 1st grade when this all happened, but i caught up just a few years later and as a pre-teen 5th grader, in late 73, i already ''had heard about'' Sabbath. After the 74 Carnation revolution here, very specialized yet restricted import started to reach these Atlantic shores. The first albums i remember holding were Vol4 and SBS, but they weren't mine ... yet.
