LOL - When someone stops me when I am knitting in public to ask me about my crochet, I correct them with something like , "this is knitting, I wish I could crochet like my mother". I always look forward to the next question which is normally, "what is it going to be etc.
I agree that there are some designers that are overrated. As a knitter you need to concentrate on the how well the designers’ patterns fit you and work in your wardrobe. I have a few Petite Knits that are flattering. But I like to explore lots of designs and designers. And yes, mohair should not have to be in EVERYTHING! It is so ITCHY and HOT! Get comfortable yarn that you can afford.

And great tip about filtering out the mainstream designers that deluge and obscure the first pages of a Ravelry search. Can’t believe I hadn’t thought of that. Isn’t it funny? I think the people that have the most sense with mohair are the ones living near my daughter in Alaska and the Yukon or any other cold climate. The extra warmth from the mohair makes sense. How many fluffy sweaters do you want? I love the color choices you made for the sweater you are wearing.

I just found you, Kendra, and I enjoyed your honest remarks. We don't all like the same patterns, yarns, and styles. To each his/her own. I have always avoided what everyone else wants to do, so I have saved myself a lot of headaches and unwanted clothing. (I love my hand-knit socks, too.) I will certainly check in again.
I only learned how to make socks this year and I haven't stopped. Just love them. I have some standard patterns I use and love playing with the different effects you can get with different stitch. arrangements. I mostly use wool or wool mixes.First time I've seen your videos and have enjoyed the chat. Thank you
As a continental knitter with arthritis, purling causes me more pain than knitting. I try to knit in the round as much as possible to avoid purling when I can. Using shorty needles also helps reduce my pain when knitting.😊

I don’t get the hype over Petite Knit either…and when she came out with a mohair version of her Oslo Hat that you had to pay for even if you’d already bought the regular Oslo…not a good look IMO. And the whole mindset of demanding designers be size inclusive….AGREE, and you are brave for stating your opinion. No one is entitled to another’s work. Let the market sort it out! If they are financially fine not being size inclusive, it’s OKAY.
I recently realized, everyone does fall into the rabbit holes of specific designers, and I feel like they’re all competing with one another ... not for me. I knit for mental therapy. Not a competition. 😊 I resonate with your comments. 🤘🏼😁
Totally agree with that observation you made about the hive mentality!!!! Hahaha... Omg I so agree with most of these... Specially the hive mentality bit.. it's not new, obviously, and as someone who's had multiple hobbies (from makeup to home DIYs) I've learn to filter out the hypes and cliques fairly quickly. Another thing, from the very beginning, I taught myself with free patterns and almost immediately how to adjust to MY measurements and preferences... Maybe because of the fact that as I mentioned before I've tried plenty of hobbies so I'm pretty technical and hands on. It all boils down to preferences, abilities, and what one is willing to learn.

On the size inclusivity- I 100% agree. It’s a free market and designers are free to choose the sizes they want to grade and provide without being shamed. As for the Euro girls- I like some of their patterns and simply don’t get others-like the tiny little scarf everyone made-which imho, looks silly. My pet peeve.. the same people who are screaming about size inclusiveness are promoting patterns that cost $300+ to knit which is anything but inclusive. Again, if someone wants to knit a $300 sweater- that’s on them, but I do find it a bit hypocritical for them to scream about inclusivity. I am looking at you Canadian podcasting sisters.

Thank you for your candor about Petite Knit. I totally agree. She’s so over saturated. There are so many other beautiful designers that deserve the spotlight.. although I don’t think Andrea Mowry deserves to be in the same category. Her patterns are unique to each other, beautifully designed and very clearly written. As a fairly new garment knitter, I just finished the Winters Beach Cardi. It was my first bottom up my first cables, first afterthought pockets and first helical knitting. It fits beautifully, and I am so proud of it. I now have the confidence to tackle almost anything And it will most likely be another Andrea Mowry design💕

I don't know? Every Andrea Mowery design I've seen, I see in other designers, sometimes decades past. What she does do is hype up the experience and makes the design popular. Which is fun and also, you could find other indy designs that are similar and knit those, if you want.
I think Andreas Pattern are to expensive for the lack of detail you get out of them. I love to pay good money for a well written pattern for a interestingly designed garment or even a very profound recipe for a technique/garment construction. But if I have to essentially calculate and plan all of the details that give the sweater a professional finish myself... Nope. Yep, many of those patterns are "beginner friendly" but especially as a beginner I wanted to learn how to archive perfect details. That's what I pay money for besides of new and interesting ideas and concepts.
I'm with you about the most popular things. If I happen to like the item they are producing then I will favorite it, buy it, or make it, but I have always been like that. I tend to gravitate away from name brand items because most of the time you are paying for the name. And, "I hope I didn't offend anyone, but if I did... I'm not sorry." 😆😂🤣

I have been knitting for more years than you have been alive (60 years, learned in grade 2) and have only occasionally had issues with yarn barf or tangles. I do cake all my yarn, even the commercia put up balls. Just a comment on not using patterns if they are not size exclusive, it was not till the last 5-10 years where we have had larger than a basic XL size included.
Also, I agree with you on the knitting vs crochet comments. If a knitter is offended by someone calling what they do crochet (or vice versa) then they are clearly the one who is prejudiced, which is much uglier than ignorant!

The reaction that Toni and her mom did was fantastic: such funny women! I am glad you did this, it was interesting to hear the opinions and your takes on them. You were very level and fair even when you were not on board with something. I loved the French tuck comment 😄 (It makes me roll my eyes.) I like center-pull cakes, but I tend to roll the remaining yarn when the cake collapses to avoid tangles. I think short-row shaping makes a lot of sense for fit reasons. If someone doesn't find it necessary, more power to them! And I agree that a lot of people are way too easily offended. People need to step back and realize that what others say is often not personal, it's not about them. And I love knitting for others. I have way more yarn than I will ever be able to use and so when I can work up things to give away, when a friend or relative admires something I've knit and is interested in having it (or having me make a similar piece for them), I am thrilled. I'm a process knitter more than a product knitter, so it's super for me when I can make things and give them away (to knitworthy souls). I like how you talk about the craft. Subscribed 🙂
I have so many knitted items in my wardrobe - and a drawer full of hats scarves and mittens. I’d love to knit more for others. It’s the feeling of my own implied deadline that I struggle with. With regard to very popular designers, my thinking is more that their pattern writing style has been refined and critiqued and the patterns themselves checked for errors because so many are looking at them. I’ve knitted a couple items from lesser known designers and occasionally found unclear instructions and errors in the pattern. Sometimes the hive mentality can be helpful? That being said I haven’t knitted a single item from Petite Knit and only a couple from Andrea Mowery.
I've really enjoyed this, thank you! You have made me laugh with your opinions, and I agree that there is no knitting police, you can do what you want, knit what you want in the yarn that you like. But I strongly disagree about magic loop. Yes it's a very clever technique, and it has its place if you are in a situation where you might lose a needle. However for me magic loop is spawn of the devil! It's like knitting with a recalcitrant butterfly and not for me. It's good that we're all different in our preferences though, and that there are techniques and yarns to suit everyone, and no real hard and fast rules.
About the "French Tuck": I wasn't aware it was called like that until a knitter on UA-cam mentioned it like 3 weeks ago. Here in the Netherlands it was a thing in 2018-2019. Nowadays no one in my city seems to do this kind of tuck anymore.😅
I’m so disloyal to any one small circumference technique. I kind of just do whatever fits my mood or current project. On hats I usually go from 16” to DPNs, but I’ll use a magic loop a needle size I don’t have 16s for. For sleeves I love magic loop for top down, but DPNs for bottom up. Not sure there’s a rhyme to my reason, but it’s nice to have several tool choices!
For small circumference knitting I actually love the FlexiFlips. However Addi's are expensive so I only have the sizes I use most for garments so when I knit hats, if I don't have the perfect wire length, I will use magic loop
11:41 👏🏻 Free market knitting! I applaud this definitely controversial opinion! As a designer and an editor I see the work that goes into creating patterns. To be expected (and bullied?!) into size exclusive grading when you are either not trained in or don’t have the resources to pay for it to be outsourced is, quite simply, gatekeeping. Now…while I agree that we should all feel free to knit what we want and as small scale designers, design for bodies we are familiar enough with to serve and dress well (on all ends of the spectrum and in the middle), I will say that “design houses”/big brands that have teams dedicated to churning out patterns have no excuse to not make size inclusive designs. It’s a change that needs to be acknowledged, but I agree that we don’t need to demand boycotts. Knitting what you want! 18:58 hahaha! Sofa Leg Warmers. 😂😂😂
It's just mostly non-superwash yarn that is relatively inexpensive (especially in Europe). Sunday and KFO merino are just light fingering yarn that is not treated with superwash in a broad range of colors. People also generally struggle to substitute yarn so you have a very popular designer who uses that yarn, it's no surprise that the yarn she mostly uses becomes popular too.

Do you have a video showing how to properly weave ends in? I hate putting knots in but I also don't trust myself since I was never really taught how to weave in ends for knitting.
I think I get why people would hate the idea of knitting socks and/or shawls. That said, those folks must be knitting more sweaters/tops and that's just not something everyone can confidently do. I'm really passionate about full bust adjustments in knitting, so I could go on and on, but ultimately even patterns that have bust adjustments are severely lacking. Ultimately, mastering full bust adjustments in knitting is extremely difficult and inaccessible to most people. And a person is only going to put themselves through the disappointment of ill fitting garments so many times before it's not worth it to knit them anymore.
Lol, this is exactly what I do when encountering new to me podcasters knitting petitknit with knitting for olive and mohair. Also, any podcaster wearing a renunculus is a immediate skip for me.

@@balancedskein I come from a super crochet background (learned at 5 years old). I learned to knit when I was in high school (continental style since my family is German heritage and that is what my mom knew) but didn't really like it since it felt "wrong" to me to hold the yarn and needles and such. I basically stopped knitting until about a month or so ago when I re-taught myself to knit (because I had a small amount of some hand-dyes and spun yarn and it takes more yarn to crochet than to knit) and found the Portuguese style which is more natural for me and feels better on my hands.
My take on the French tuck is that it looks sloppy. I personally love small circulars and wouldn't want to knit socks or sleeves without them. I have small hands so small circulars work very well for me.

While I see why it feels okay to you and some people to accept yarn for collabs, it's still not great because it sets that as the standard. Because if brands can get someone who is more casual about content creation to do work for free, then that makes it hard for others who want to make a career creating content to do so because brands won't work with them if they can get the same work from someone else for only yarn.

Do not say "historically". I watch a video on fashion, specifically the brand CHANEL, a few months ago and according to the video, up until the late 1950s, early 1960s, pink was used for boy and blue was used for girls. That dynamic changed in the early 1960s
I gotta disagree with you on the size inclusivity and the charts/written instructions thing; unlike most of the other opinions you dealt with here, these two are where the privileged set (I'm not going to say majority, because in size inclusivity complaints, we're often dealing with designers whose LARGEST size is at or even below the AVERAGE bust size of Western women, which is a size 16/18 which corresponds to a bust size of somewhere over 45" - for the average size!!! Meaning half the women are above that to well above that!) - the privileged set have the opportunity to use their voices (and their dollars) to help others. A free market is not a moral good, and in this case, it reinforces fatphobia and other oppressive and exclusionary views that are a real social poison and contribute to actual violence as well as mental health repercussions to those on the receiving end of the oppressive views. With the charts and written instructions, I'm with you that charts are easier - for me. Yet I have friends with vision and/or mental processing differences that make it nearly impossible for them to use a chart. I am all for inclusivity where it comes to designers making their patterns readable and usable by more people, and it doesn't hurt a chart reader for there also to be written instructions in the same pattern. But everything else - I either agree or enjoyably tolerate your take. A BIG high five on the Petite Knit comments. Not only are they mostly all the same sweater, but her schematics leave out important measurements and I find that irritating.

I like center-pull cakes, but I tend to roll the remaining yarn when the cake collapses to avoid tangles. I think short-row shaping makes a lot of sense for fit reasons. If someone doesn't find it necessary, more power to them! And I agree that a lot of people are way too easily offended. People need to step back and realize that what others say is often not personal, it's not about them. And I love knitting for others. I have way more yarn than I will ever be able to use and so when I can work up things to give away, when a friend or relative admires something I've knit and is interested in having it (or having me make a similar piece for them), I am thrilled. I'm a process knitter more than a product knitter, so it's super for me when I can make things and give them away (to knitworthy souls). I like how you talk about the craft. Subscribed 🙂

I have so many knitted items in my wardrobe - and a drawer full of hats scarves and mittens. I’d love to knit more for others. It’s the feeling of my own implied deadline that I struggle with. With regard to very popular designers, my thinking is more that their pattern writing style has been refined and critiqued and the patterns themselves checked for errors because so many are looking at them. I’ve knitted a couple items from lesser known designers and occasionally found unclear instructions and errors in the pattern. Sometimes the hive mentality can be helpful? That being said I haven’t knitted a single item from Petite Knit and only a couple from Andrea Mowery.
I've really enjoyed this, thank you! You have made me laugh with your opinions, and I agree that there is no knitting police, you can do what you want, knit what you want in the yarn that you like. But I strongly disagree about magic loop. Yes it's a very clever technique, and it has its place if you are in a situation where you might lose a needle. However for me magic loop is spawn of the devil! It's like knitting with a recalcitrant butterfly and not for me.
It's good that we're all different in our preferences though, and that there are techniques and yarns to suit everyone, and no real hard and fast rules.

I totally agree on the gift knitting idea. Getting a request to knit something is like a job, not something I like to do.
I appreciate the mohair comment. While I have some sweaters I use (mostly loose gauge) it isn’t thought out well enough.
About the "French Tuck": I wasn't aware it was called like that until a knitter on UA-cam mentioned it like 3 weeks ago. Here in the Netherlands it was a thing in 2018-2019. Nowadays no one in my city seems to do this kind of tuck anymore.😅
I’m so disloyal to any one small circumference technique. I kind of just do whatever fits my mood or current project. On hats I usually go from 16” to DPNs, but I’ll use a magic loop a needle size I don’t have 16s for. For sleeves I love magic loop for top down, but DPNs for bottom up. Not sure there’s a rhyme to my reason, but it’s nice to have several tool choices!

As an English flicker, I love purling! 😂 I also prefer small circular needles and dpns over magic loop. 🧶
Purling doesn’t bother me either.
For small circumference knitting I actually love the FlexiFlips. However Addi's are expensive so I only have the sizes I use most for garments so when I knit hats, if I don't have the perfect wire length, I will use magic loop

11:41 👏🏻 Free market knitting! I applaud this definitely controversial opinion! As a designer and an editor I see the work that goes into creating patterns. To be expected (and bullied?!) into size exclusive grading when you are either not trained in or don’t have the resources to pay for it to be outsourced is, quite simply, gatekeeping. Now…while I agree that we should all feel free to knit what we want and as small scale designers, design for bodies we are familiar enough with to serve and dress well (on all ends of the spectrum and in the middle), I will say that “design houses”/big brands that have teams dedicated to churning out patterns have no excuse to not make size inclusive designs. It’s a change that needs to be acknowledged, but I agree that we don’t need to demand boycotts. Knitting what you want!

Yeah I hear about that brand and knitting for olive so often. Haven't tried either yet, but if I do, I'm prepared to be... underwhelmed lol
It's just mostly non-superwash yarn that is relatively inexpensive (especially in Europe). Sunday and KFO merino are just light fingering yarn that is not treated with superwash in a broad range of colors.
People also generally struggle to substitute yarn so you have a very popular designer who uses that yarn, it's no surprise that the yarn she mostly uses becomes popular too.

I think I get why people would hate the idea of knitting socks and/or shawls. That said, those folks must be knitting more sweaters/tops and that's just not something everyone can confidently do. I'm really passionate about full bust adjustments in knitting, so I could go on and on, but ultimately even patterns that have bust adjustments are severely lacking. Ultimately, mastering full bust adjustments in knitting is extremely difficult and inaccessible to most people. And a person is only going to put themselves through the disappointment of ill fitting garments so many times before it's not worth it to knit them anymore.
Lol, this is exactly what I do when encountering new to me podcasters knitting petitknit with knitting for olive and mohair. Also, any podcaster wearing a renunculus is a immediate skip for me.

I actually prefer the purl stitch to the knit stitch. I knit Portuguese style and I think this is a common idea with Portuguese knitters.

@@balancedskein I come from a super crochet background (learned at 5 years old). I learned to knit when I was in high school (continental style since my family is German heritage and that is what my mom knew) but didn't really like it since it felt "wrong" to me to hold the yarn and needles and such. I basically stopped knitting until about a month or so ago when I re-taught myself to knit (because I had a small amount of some hand-dyes and spun yarn and it takes more yarn to crochet than to knit) and found the Portuguese style which is more natural for me and feels better on my hands.
My take on the French tuck is that it looks sloppy. I personally love small circulars and wouldn't want to knit socks or sleeves without them. I have small hands so small circulars work very well for me.

Another unpopular opinion here: Don't care about modesty, so what if people want to show their bodies?
While I see why it feels okay to you and some people to accept yarn for collabs, it's still not great because it sets that as the standard. Because if brands can get someone who is more casual about content creation to do work for free, then that makes it hard for others who want to make a career creating content to do so because brands won't work with them if they can get the same work from someone else for only yarn.
After loosing so many dpn needles, magic loop is the way to go. Thanks for your opinions, I agree with all. Refreshing, thanks for being entertaining too!
Do not say "historically". I watch a video on fashion, specifically the brand CHANEL, a few months ago and according to the video, up until the late 1950s, early 1960s, pink was used for boy and blue was used for girls. That dynamic changed in the early 1960s
I gotta disagree with you on the size inclusivity and the charts/written instructions thing; unlike most of the other opinions you dealt with here, these two are where the privileged set (I'm not going to say majority, because in size inclusivity complaints, we're often dealing with designers whose LARGEST size is at or even below the AVERAGE bust size of Western women, which is a size 16/18 which corresponds to a bust size of somewhere over 45" - for the average size!!! Meaning half the women are above that to well above that!) - the privileged set have the opportunity to use their voices (and their dollars) to help others. A free market is not a moral good, and in this case, it reinforces fatphobia and other oppressive and exclusionary views that are a real social poison and contribute to actual violence as well as mental health repercussions to those on the receiving end of the oppressive views. With the charts and written instructions, I'm with you that charts are easier - for me. Yet I have friends with vision and/or mental processing differences that make it nearly impossible for them to use a chart. I am all for inclusivity where it comes to designers making their patterns readable and usable by more people, and it doesn't hurt a chart reader for there also to be written instructions in the same pattern.
But everything else - I either agree or enjoyably tolerate your take. A BIG high five on the Petite Knit comments. Not only are they mostly all the same sweater, but her schematics leave out important measurements and I find that irritating.
