    The FOMO on a limited edition yarn is the bane of my existence! I find it SO challenging to feel okay with missing out on a yarn that will never be available again. Sometimes I fail and I buy the yarn anyway, but the last time there was an update I wanted to shop, I happened to organize my stash the same day (unplanned coincidence), and seeing all the beautiful yarns I already have made me NOT want to buy the new yarn tempting me. I still think about those yarns, so I've kept a picture of the yarn so I can keep an eye out for similar colours in the future when I feel like buying new yarn 😊

      That's a really good idea to save a picture of the colorways you like! The whole shop update mad dash of indie dyed yarn gives me anxiety 😅😅

    I love the sweater you arr wearing. So becoming. I agree with your parting statement that there will always be another sale, another beautifully dued corway,, etc. It took me a long time to get comfortable with that concept! Goot recap of the year.

      Thank you for watching! And just in case, the sweater I'm wearing is Ward by Sloane Rosenthal 😁

      @@balancedskein I made Tangled Up in Gray by her and really enjoyed the knit. I wear it whenever Austin gets "cold" enough.

    A refreshing way to present 2023! You’re right: some of the reviews have been intimidating and a bit of a slog to watch, but this was just right. That Rota top is calling to me too.

    I loved your take on this trend with the categories. That summer dress is beautiful, I would love to see your process on how you tackled it since you had no pattern. It’s always fun to see how people tackle hand making a store-bought design and I loved your video on recreating that old sweater you had. Your no-buy reflections are also so refreshing. My biggest goal this year is to work through my stash, much of which I gathered throughout years of dopamine shopping 😅 the knitting community needs less enabling so it’s exciting to have people like you. Have a lovely week ❣️❣️

      Thank you! Yes, I love the summer dress, and I didn't give her the attention she deserves 😅. I'll be cheering you on throughout the year on your stash reduction goal 👏🏾

    I'm so inspired by your no-buy year. I also hate clutter and love to purge. I have about 8 projects worth of yarn, with their patterns, all lined up and ready to knit. I think my goal will be to buy nothing until I'm working on the final project that I have in stash. I'm not a fast knitter, so this should take me to the end of 2025, possibly... Love your no-nonsense attitude!

    • @balancedskein
      @balancedskein  2 місяці тому

      @sylviaread8538 that's a really good strategy! I might consider doing something similar with my sweater quantities... I really want to work through them, but the newer yarn always seems to steal my attention

  • @Lucy-vx2ls

    You're so right about how the yarn will always be there in spite of limited colorways, sales, etc. The manufactured scarcity of a lot of yarn dyers is really frustrating to me. I understand why it's done, but what the heck are we doing in this community when we talk about the evils of consumerism/fast fashion, then use the exact same tactics in yarn selling/purchasing. And don't get me started on the concept of knitting explicitly for fashion trends (it's why I've never been able to commit to anything from pom pom magazine).

    • @balancedskein
      @balancedskein  8 місяців тому +1

      Right! With the hand dyers, they're usually a smaller operation, so I totally understand their limited inventory. I just don't like that it means people scramble to snatch up what they can during a shop update because it perpetuates this frantic urgency.

    It was so nice to see your projects again. I really like your self-drafted sweater. It looks so close to the original. I really like your Tonight Top and Rota Sleeveless Top as well.

    Love the way you categorized your knits. A great way to get a feel of how you really wear your knits and what actually feels useful for you.
    Also could not have needed to hear your reflections on your "no buy" more. Realistically I know I'm not going to put myself on that only to disappoint myself, but thinking about buying vs. when you'll realistically get to knitting that yarn is a very helpful way of thinking about it. I've been better at making sure I have a project in mind for yarn, but what does it matter if I'm not going to get to the yarn any time soon. Really enjoyed this video

    Ok….another great video..I am watching from your most recent back…ya got me…..this content is ewually relevant….makes me think about my “collections” of yarn….and “the yarn will always be there” my take on this is “ there’s always another bus”……….very good reasoning but even better to hear someone speak it…..

    😂
    I laughed at the description of the yarn shopping addictions 😅
    I didn't know people were buying yarn without a specific project to make loll
    I would be way too overwhelmed 😅
    I have three sweater quantities for my next three projects and I already feel overwhelmed.
    Kendra:
    "Hello my name is Kendra and I'm addicted to buying yarn"
    😅
    Group:
    "Hello Kendra!"
    LOL
    Anywhoo I suscribed!
    I will be watching your what I knit this month videos, as a new knitter I actually really do like to look at what other people are making 😊

    Great way to 'rank' your 2023 makes. Also loved your thoughts on no buy 2023. While I didn't do 'no buy', I've been very thoughtful about my purchases since 2022 and like you have found it makes me much more creative to work from my stash. It is actually fun!! Looking forward to part 2.

    Love your reflections you shared! I did some attempts at no buy last year and failed and like you I noticed I had multiple sweater quantities as well. I just went 30 days without buying yarn and hope to continue. I want to fall in love with my yarn or gift/ exchange with someone else who may love it.

    I hear what you say on the stash. I have too much yarn and it is overwhelming. The problem is i have too many one skeins. I have learned to purchase better but i still want to get rid of yarn. I wish i had someone to give some to 😢.

    • @balancedskein
      @balancedskein  8 місяців тому

      Hmm I wish I could offer more advice on getting rid of yarn! I've only sold yarn once, and it took a couple weeks to get rid of it 😅. Single skeins would be great for making gifts or knitting up a big, color block blanket 🤔 good luck!

    Thanks for a great video. I found myself randomly buying random skeins of yarn. When I decided to stop buying and really look at what I had, I realized I have beautiful yarn for lovely projects, but also some WTH skeins. Overall though, I’m enjoyed starting and finishing (some) projects from my queue. What do you do with yarn leftover from a project? I have quite a few partial skeins from finished projects and don’t really have interest in using them again.

    • @balancedskein
      @balancedskein  8 місяців тому

      Yesss I definitely have some WTH skeins 😅. As for what I do with my scraps, I don't have. Good approach to this! Sock scraps are easy because I can always use them for contrast heel/toe/cuff... but for all my other yarn, I haven't figured it out yet.

      I also loved your comments about buying. I have only been knitting for two years. I love yarn. But I have linked mine for specific projects and use a lot of yarn from Lion Brand. I have just want to make sure that my hobby is affordable. I am treating myself for some Knitting for Olive on a blouse I want to do soon. But I have found that people are more impressed by the knitting project and haven’t a clue about the yarn. So “special projects” in which I am treating myself I splurge on yarn. In the end no matter what I paid, I am amazed that “I did that!!!” 🧶😊
