It was absolutely worth the wait for me. The movie was made for people who cared about the underlying plot that was developing from the beginning. I like the fact that this movie takes itself seriously. It's very bold for an Adult Swim show to dedicate itself to that level of plot and character progression without falling back to the status quo out of fear or pressure from the network. If this movie was 2 hours of Dethklok doing what they usually did in the show, sure, maybe it would have been funny, but it would be something that would ultimately be forgettable and just another Adult Swim throwaway from the pile. I'd rather any show go for its creative vision than bend the knee for the sake of appeasing networks or rolling with whatever just worked
Ohhh man I don't even know where to start. It did take me more than a few minutes to settle into this movie as I was taking in the dramatic tonal shift. It does make sense to have the darker tone with where the story was going, addressing the actual Metalocalypse and all, but I do agree that there could have been some more laughs peppered throughout. I do feel like out of all the characters Skwisgaar was neglected here, maybe Brendon felt like Skwisgaar had already received more than enough focus throughout the series but for such a major character he could have had some more depth here. I did enjoy the few cutesy Skwisgaar and Toki moments they threw in for us as those have always been oh-so-popular with the fandom, clearly Brendon understands that their relationship is a consistent throughline that fans expect to be rewarded with. The animation and score were beautiful, no doubt. The movie had the difficult task of wrapping up a rather complex underlying plot that had been developed over YEARS of writing and I do overall feel that it satisfied that requirement. HOWEVER, it did leave me wanting more and thinking yet again about how complex all these characters are and how SO MUCH MORE could have been done with them, not only in this finale but as a whole. The series garnered a passionate cult following over the years but was niche enough to miss the broad appeal that would have given it the budget to fully delve into all aspects of the lore. The world deserved so much more Metalocalypse than we got, but it was great to see the boys one last time and get some closure.
Doomstar Requiem is finally available on DVD with the Complete Series box set. It’s in the season 4 special features, albeit without subtitles. Still, I’m grateful it’s available
The reason that Metalocalypse had nothing for over a decade is because of the ex vice president of Williams Street “Mike Lazzo” hated the show and refused to green light a finale.
Couldn't agree with you MORE. I enjoyed the movie overall, the visuals, music, animation were incredible, but a lot of story parts felt totally aimless, confusing and unfocused. By the end of it I was left with many questions, for example: Did it really matter that the band played the wrong salvation song? The effects of Metalocalypse felt narratively inconsequential to me, other than the band being forced to leave the temple. I didn't really understand why, of all characters, General Croizer had to be redeemed and given so much of screen time. Why did Salacia adress Nathan and only Nathan after Murderface's exorcism or when the band was captured? It felt like there was supposed to be more to their connection that wasn't explored at all. I didn't understand why the Murderface's arc resolution had to be so mean to him. I know that Murderface sucking is a running joke but it didn't fit the tone of the film. Also compare it to the "Doomstar requiem" message where Nathan tells William that he consideres him a brother and would risk his life for him - that fits much better for a series finale. Why did the final fight with Salacia turn into a kaiju battle? The baddest guy of the show became unrecognizable really for no reason and essentially was defeated the same way Metal Mask was. I didn't really like that Edgar's (the wheelchair tech guy) sacrifice was in vain. It didn't help Dethklok escape nor did it stop Salacia's transformation? I didn't really understand the significanse of Charles amulet. Like, what was so important about it that he had to kill Orlag with it? In the end, I wish more of the screen time was used to explore the dynamic between bandmates further, since it's likely the last time we get to enjoy their company.
The Whale God told Nathan the world must end in order to save it. That was part of the prophecy, there were two songs of salvation: SOS to the fans, and then the fans.
You can tell that the ultimate purpose of this movie was to wrap up the main story line. I found there to be a lot of classic Dethklok humour in the second half with the first half being a lot more dramatic like you said. I would have liked more humour as well but at the same the time the drama really added to the impact of the finale and the Murderface story arc which was done beautifully.
I pretty much agree with that assessment, though I'd also throw in that I didn't care for Nathan proposing, and even less that in the end she isn't even confirmed to be dead or alive. Just seems odd to have put it in at all if there wasn't going to be any further developement of it. That aside I still enjoyed it and am ultimately happy with the conclusion. I also realized early on in the series that it was going to be a problem (or at least a challenge) to have them become saviors when all they seemd to do was show disdain for the world and their fans. The only option was for them to change their minds and I feel like they handled it pretty well.
I think the development of the Abigail and Nathan story was that he realised he doesn't NEED a woman. Throughout the series, Nathan had been on a search for a serious relationship and it always ended badly or right out tragically. But when he was on the wing of that jet, after almost tumbling to his death, he realised he wasn't actually missing anything and he already had all the fulfillment. It ended differently than I expected. I thought they have to wrap up Nathan's love problem somehow and I just imagined Abigail will be portrayed as the one... somehow. But this was better.
@@user-tq1xt2ct8s I appreciate your thoughts, but I feel like either one of two things should have happened. Either they shouldn't have had her involved at all, OR at the end they should have shown him living it up with some fangirls to show he was over it. Just felt a bit to open at the end for me, but to each their own.
I am one of the few who do not miss the comedy. At this point, it made perfect sense to be a bit more dramatic, so things can feel like they have an impact. Every time the show was impactful the comedy was toned down. I'll trade it for epicness any day. We have like 3 and a half seasons worth of comedy. At the end of Season 4, the tone hints at this change. The band's relationship is headed here. I like that they are taking their relationship seriously here. I wish the other characters - besides Nathan and maybe Murderface, had more time for development. Shit had to be 3 hours :D I really wanted Toki to have time to work on his issues overall, but we have to have a whole Toki season. But just to say Age Regression like this isn't permanent, it is during a trigger. Toki did it as well when he started hitting people to get attention back in the show, just not to that exaggerated extent. It is unclear what brings it out tho.
I basically agree with everything in this video. The movie is unfortunetly pretty short. If it would be at least two hours long, it would probably fix it's issues. But as a epic finale it works good enough. Since the attack on the shrine I was on the edge of my seat!
It was originally pitched as a six part miniseries back before it was cancelled in 2015. That would have helped a ton to flesh out a lot of elements that felt glossed over. It was good to get a conclusion at least. Anything beats an uncompleted story. Especially after ten years.
Your thoughts reflect mine. The movie was worth the wait, but it was missing a lot of fundamental elements that made Metalocalypse great in the first place, and I think it would have been possible for Small to work most of those things in.
Yes it was worth it as a German man who's a heavy metal fan myself My honest opinion it was a very satisfactory send off to this amazing show, but goddamn I am sad Nathan didn't get the girl he wanted in the end
I saw the movie when recently, HBO MAX finally put the movie on their streaming, and I saw it. I agree there are some ups and downs when it comes to the story. But I think it was fun for me and my bros to finally watch its conclusion for the series, I hope.
I'm sorry you didnt like it, but when I found out they were working on the movie I rewatched the show. The plot was kept in tact SO WELL and it gave me chills. It was beautiful! Like ten years hadn't even passed!
Doom star requiem is on Amazon prime according to google for like 1.99 usd so maybe it’s a Canada thing? Also I don’t think it ever got a dvd release but I could be wrong
I know its on Hbo Max or Max as its called now. Doomstar requiem on there is listed as the season 4 finale. Idk if there are country differences but if you haven’t already give that a look.
Absolutely! The new movie's not on HBO but I know the full series + doomstar requiem is. Its strange that they categorize is it as part of season 4. Fingers crossed you guys can get it!!@@themetalmeltdownofficial
I liked it overall. I think what humor was there fell flat and it was a little shark jumpy. It was a good finale to the story. I think you point out how the story could have been better though.
there were a few moments in the movie that really made me reminisce of evangelion-- one example visually that comes to mind is sen. stampington during that moment near the climax. the "hedgehog's dilemma" concept mentioned in evangelion + the hand and fist metaphor also had interesting intersect in the way my mind connects things. i aspire to one day ask small many good questions about the way he wrote things, and the making of the series.
I loved it. Love the whole idea behind it. I just got back from a meet and greet show with Dethklok. Met Brendan and Gene. Got to talk to both of them. Really nice guys. Brendan gave me a pick, had floor seating. They also straight up blew Babymetal off the stage. Best metal band out there in my humble opinion.
Sadly I can't agree with you more. you basically just voiced my thoughts. I wanted to love this so much but I just didn't. I really missed the operatic format of Doomstar Requiem.

There was a little to much profanity for me in this movie
Clearly you never watched the show then lmao. It had loads of profanity from Season 3 onwards.
Also, how is profanity an issue for you but not graphic violence and blood?
Hate to break it to you, but that’s one of the elements of adult swim shows.
