Being able to say “I don’t believe the same religious things that you do, but I still respect and care about you. I don’t think you’re wrong, I don’t think I’m right, we’re just thinking different” is a skill that many people don’t have. It takes humility, kindness, grace, and confidence all of which I feel is greatly lacking in today’s society.

I wish more people could listen, discuss and disagree with compassion. I feel as though people tend to always want to be in the right but the world is not painted in black and white, it is all the beautiful shades. Your lives and beliefs are the same, all beautiful shades.

sorry I hate to be a stick in the mud, but how do you accept someone’s beliefs when their belief alienates and even harms people. Not that you have to accept it to have a discussion but I just have no tolerance The discussion ends for me when the conversation changes from discussion to “you need to believe as I do or you will burn…. no more civil conversations after that. Purgatory is the primary example of a non-loving god and I can’t see eye to eye. I am sorry but when a hurtful message is being preached o matter how lovely it is dressed up I can’t find common ground. But like I said I am a stick in the mud.

Atheists have more faith than Christians, for there is little to no evidence of how the earth and sun could be spontaneously created let alone life from nothing. Please look closer at evolution and you will find it has no fossil record and is mere imagination. Imagine your human body coming out from the dust spontaneously. Then imagine a God who loves you and created all things and sent His Son. Who fulfilled prophesies and died for your salvation.

I feel that the old adage of don't talk about politics, religion, or money has caused us as a society to become unwilling to have civil conversations. We don't have to agree but let's be respetful and listen, you never know what you will learn. Great share, I enjoyed the give and take.

    • @James-re6co
      @James-re6co 2 місяці тому +7

The reason you should not talk about politics and religion with people you love is because they both are belief systems. There is nothing you can say that will change the way I believe, and vice versa. When you discover that someone you love believes you are going to burn in hell, or that your political beliefs are inhuman.....well, your relationship is over pretty much.
Money does not fall into the same category. Asking others about their money is simply rude.

@@James-re6co Not everyone feels that way about discussing politics and religion (and money). Some people struggle to have a relationship with someone who believes differently than they do. And that's okay.
Discussing and arguing are two very different things, of course. The purpose should not be to change minds but to learn more. I've found relationships that include the respectful discussion of differences can become the most edifying, insightful, and enlightening. I believe a beautiful bond is one formed when belief systems differ but friendship and care for one another blossoms regardless.

I'm starving for this kind of conversations. Back in university I had roommates from many different faiths and beliefs, we would sit at the dining room table (cause there was no living room in the student house we were in) and talk about topics just like this. We would literally sometimes even get to shouting but it was always with a kindness behind it and never an intent to diminish the other but rather discuss and get the other's perspective. It is only possible to do this with certain kinds of people unfortunately.

I am very fortunate to have a friend that is a catholic theologian, it really helps to talk with a theologian who is well versed in talking with people who may not understand the faith. I was some-what hurt by religious teachings and rejected them completely. But what I understood Christianity to be now, is very different than then. Christianity is amazing(if it is true). The woman coming from the side, means she is Adam’s equal and companion, and being last of creation is the pinnacle of creation(catholic 😀) .

Saludos amigos

I'm atheist and look on those types of conversations with patience, but also with similar feelings as if listening to a child's fairy tale. Religion around the world has fostered peace, structure, violence, hope, despair, self loathing, racism and war. Christianity, I was brought up to believe, should lead to forgiveness and love. Instead, it seems to reward judgement, exclusion and guilt. Why can't we all do the right thing just because we are working to better each other and support communities, building success, love and strength. Why do we need to look for a savior to return (waiting for thousands of years) just to find a type of heaven, when we could create that here and now without being guilted into it. This universe is too vast and amazing to think that something as limiting as a single God being would be so concerned with us and our minor sins. Gods were the creation of men's minds to explain how nature worked and structured rules so we could function as communities to survive. We know much more through science now. Anyway, I know people tend to need something to help steer them in their philosophies, to provide the comfort of thought that there must be more after this mortal existence. I just don't understand why they feel the need to be hypocrites, judge others and doubt the spirituality of those who may not pray to the same deity as themselves. Peace.

I strive to explore my faith and not get too hung up on the details; I suspect that in the afterlife we'll all be surprised by the truth. May you find a faith system that gives you comfort and strength.

I loved the conversation at the end. Growing up Jewish, we studied the Bible (first testament) in Hebrew. And the translation varies a lot since we learnt how to translate it ourselves and we go to see all the different meanings in the words. So we didn’t read rib or curve or even fig leaf! We got to learn all the different forms of translation and learn all the meanings. If there’s a section you think sounds off I encourage you to look up the original Hebrew verse 😊 And enjoy! It’s a crazy book!

When people tell you you are going to hell because you don't believe what they do, the fault is not likely within you but within them for being so narrow in their view of life. Just saying, it's a very big world and Christians aren't the only ones in it. Lots of paths to get to enlightenment.

To love them is to tell the truth. Once you die and find out, they were right, it is too late. There is a literal heaven and hell. God is real. Christ is real and died for your sins and mine. Their Christian friends were loving them by warning them of the danger

I think there are two ways a person (who believes in the damnation of people who have sinned but don't accept Jesus Christ as their savior) can approach sharing that view with someone. Either out of malice or pride as a "woe is you" kind of scare tactic (obviously not okay)... or out of love. As in, I love you enough to tell you what I believe about heaven and hell and eternity because I would rather have you in heaven with me. It's called "the Good News" because it's supposed to be "good news" of salvation, and sometimes you have to hear the bad news to see why the good news is good. And as with any discussion about beliefs, you don't have to believe everything you hear.

@@cathywhitmore7958 what makes your religion the “correct” or “true” one when there are hundreds of other religions in the world that all believe that they are only “correct” or “true” one. Everyone goes to hell in somebody else’s religion.
And this is coming from someone who use to believe exactly the same that you do. Having removed myself from it, I feel incredibly guilty and remorseful I tried to shove it down anyone’s throat because it is not loving. It is rude. It is disingenuous. And honestly the marks of a bad friend.

    • @cathywhitmore7958

It is not a religion! What I have is a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ who lives in me. It is relationship with God. THE SPIRIT OF GOD WHO RAISED JESUS CHRIST FROM THE GRAVE IS ALIVE AND LIVING IN ME! What makes it different from all other "religions" ...is these other religions serve dead "gods" Gods that don't exist, they are all dead. I serve a living God who rose alive from the dead. My God is the Creator of all that exist in the heavens and the earth. That Resurrection power that raised Christ from the dead, lives in me. The Living God lives in me and I walk and talk with Him. Repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, ask Him to come into your heart and you can knoq Him as I do, alive! Like I said all these other gods are dead Joseph Smith is dead, Muhammad is dead, Buddha is dead, Confucius is dead, but Jesus Christ is Alive forevermore! Dead people serve dead religions the people alive in Christ serve a living God

Your discussion was so refreshing. I have been on both sides, and all I can say is that my life is soooo much happier since I came back to God. A woman should respect her husband, but God also instructed man to love her so much he is willing to give his life for her. It really is a beautiful thing....imo. James is great! You guys are great for being so open minded!
