  • Simple project for burning shop waste, garden waste and even waste oil. Only takes a few minutes to make and with the addition of a bouncy castle fan really goes turbo to make lots of heat.
    I even tried this with some waste oil and it was well able to turn it into heat. Lots of possibilities.
    Cheers Gerry

    Hello Gerry!
    Yet another nice and simple project. Well done! You might consider placing the inlet at more of an angle to create a swirl inside the barrel. Did that once long ago and it makes a big difference - until the barrel melts, that is! Someone else made mention of a BBQ grill to make an air pocket underneat the fire and that helps, too.
    I've said it before, but you'll be in heaven if you had a plasma cutter!
    Keep on with the builds!

    Gerry, great video. That puppy is insane. I bet that thing glows at night. If you want to try a barrel that wont destroy itself with heat. Weld 4 big truck rims together with a 1/4" space between each one, right at the weld points. Air is sucked into the space between each wheel in a 360 degree circle. These barrels burn like a furnace and consume branches almost as fast as you can load them in. The last almost indefinitely. I only get less than a year out of a 55 gallon drum, but I use them a lot. There's one problem though, they weigh about 300 lbs.

    • @GerrysDiy

    I made one years ago, using an HVLP paint sprayer turbo unit, with a 1" pipe tangentially into the base of the barrel, it worked well. No need for a brute air blower like the bouncy castle one - it takes a surprisingly small air blower to supply an excess of air for smokeless burning with a vortex.
    Watch for the grassing neigbours and the council snoopers, depending where you are. Clean burning will not attract attention.

    • @andrewcaldwell9299
      @andrewcaldwell9299 2 роки тому

      He welds it on the inside of the barrel, so he can use the top of the barrel as a shelf to sit the lid on, and the lid won't slip off. Like imagine a cookie jar where the lid is the same diameter as the jar - there needs to be an inner sleeve protruding out the top so the lid will have something to slot over

  • @PicMartSkunkWerX
    @PicMartSkunkWerX 5 років тому +6

    Nice job Gerry. Suggestions: 1) connect the bottom pipe at more of an angle to swirl the forced air inside the barrel. That is how my waste oil foundry is set up, and it works very well. The oil and smoke and waste vapors will swirl inside the barrel, dwelling inside longer and burn even more completely. 2) variable rheostat speed control for your fan unit. ( I cannot remember in past videos that you may or may not have used one?). Otherwise, thanks for the video, useful and entertaining, as always!

      Hi OldMysticFantasist These things can be fun to mess with. I made a paramotor trike a couple of years ago and at 1500 feet managed to seize the engine. goo.gl/btVptK I am going to start another build when the weather starts to heat up a little. Trying to keep the brain working I was learning the State capitals. We hear locations in the states all the time but it's more fun when you can point to them on a map. Columbus and your lake views look great. Here it's 50 miles from Ireland to Wales in the UK across the Irish sea. I was amazed to see just how big your lakes are there. Superior being bigger than Ireland. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry 👍

    Good vid.
    I have used these type of barrels before for burning trash and I did it similar to what you did; I bought a cheap replacement barbeque grill and put it in the bottom on some bolts to lift it a few inches to leave an air space under the material, cut a hole on the side near the bottom, and blew air into it with a fan. I didn't use a flue, I just left the top off, but it worked great.

      @GerrysDiy  5 років тому

      Hi Rob. Great Tip Thanks. I set this up with a fan to see how smokeless I could get the burn and to try it with some waste oil. You guys have given some great suggestions for these burning barrels. Much appreciated Cheers Gerry👍

      @robb4044 5 років тому

      @@GerrysDiy You're welcome. You've shared a great deal of good info so it makes sense to share some with you as well. I did this when I didn't have garbage service for a while and as I said it worked great. Though the intense heat does mess up the heat treatment of the steel the barrel is made of so they rust apart fairly quickly (a few months maybe). I don't know but maybe putting some oil on it after it's cooled down some might make it last a bit longer.

    Hi Gerry, Thanks for another well-paced video. What will you do to make it a functional sealed oil heater? Do you think extra air is coming in from the drum opening, to join the vortex, to make the clean combustion with the lid off? My small blower stoves do this and become smoke generators without this extra secondary source of air.

    Good cheap burner. We have one similar and burn most of our industrial waste. We've made them for others on our industrial estate, all they have to do is just add a cheap leaf blower.
    With waste collection being so expensive we just burn it. This isnt the same as a bonfire as with the heat involved theres very little debris left. As collection prices increase this method will become more popular.

    1:34 Before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. I was just reading about a guy in Pennsylvania who got killed by a burn barrel last week. And I know of another incident in Iowa that killed a man who was welding on top of a barrel, using it as a workbench. Filling the drum with water before cutting into it can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.

    Now this is brilliant. But see if ye'd dig a hole as deep as you want allowing 2" extra around. Drop the drum in on a two inch base then fill the void and base with cone ten fire clay. Obviosly you need dig your blower channel. This again fill with cone ten and I advise old cast iron drain pipe. When the drum has burnt away yer left with something permanent that you can build a pretty stone wall around. Add an oak barrel lid when not in use :) Put a planter on it :)

    Could use as a forced air heater try using a squirrel cage fan made of metal would make a great shop heater if had good fresh air i dont see why not or no harm in it i find that home made stuff is better then some of the built and manufactured from computer designers never know if its built right either i build a shop heater out of a restaurant deep fryer burner bracket frame propane and a belt drive furnace blower but had to go back to draw board had a lot of setbacks and problems with my design on my gas tanks that fed the gas

    Mister Gerry what is the maximum temperature that barrel can produce with the fan on and burning with oil?

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  4 роки тому

      Hi Hero War. It will glow bright red which is about 750 C. If you line it you could get it hotter. hope this helps Cheers Gerry

    Love your vids Gerry! Been following a long time! Keep it up!!
    Maybe you can improve upon this by sealing it up and having the exhaust piping heat an out building! (Not with oil of course)

      Hi. VISAKH If you think of plastic as fuel and you get the air fuel mix correct it won't smoke. Basically not too much plastic at a time. Cheers Gerry
