  • Juanita Moore 1999 Interview Part 3 of 3. Videographed by Luke Sacher, interviewed by Carole Langer. Please excuse the time code placed on Ms. Moore's forehead- we had them made at a dubbing house rather than making them ourselves- as we did with ALL the other interview dubs- IDIOTS! LOL!
Juanita Moore (born October 19, 1922) is an American film and television actress. She is the fifth African American to be nominated for an Academy Award in any category, and the third in the Supporting Actress category.
Moore had a number of bit parts and supporting roles in motion pictures through the 1950s and 1960s. Her most famous role was as housekeeper Annie Johnson in the 1959 remake of Imitation of Life. Moore's portrayal of the broken-hearted Annie, whose daughter Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner) passes for white, won her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. When the two-movie version of Imitation of Life was released on DVD one of the bonus features was a new interview with Juanita Moore.
Moore has continued to perform in front of the camera, with a role in the movie Disney's The Kid (2000) and guest-starring roles on television shows Marcus Welby, M.D., ER and Judging Amy.
Moore's grandson is actor/producer Kirk Kelley-Kahn, who is CEO/President of "Cambridge Players - Next Generation", a theatre troupe whose founding members included Moore, Esther Rolle, Helen Martin, Lynn Hamilton and Royce Wallace.

I was so impressed with this Juanita Moore interview. She was so endearing, genuine, selfless, articulate and kind. What a proud "moment in time" for African Americans and humanity to be blessed and graced with such talent. Even in Ms. Moore's elderly years, she was grateful and gave thanks to Lana Turner for being supportive of and encouraging to her. I was touched listening to Ms. Moore clearly show respect, admiration, appreciation and affection for her colleague, clearly without any jealousy. Ms. Moore was gracious and complimentary with no ulterior motive or agenda.
It is clear that the warmth and kindness we saw in "Annie" ("Imitation of Life") was girded, propelled, authenticated and substantiated by the beautiful heart that Juanita Moore clearly possessed. Job well done.

Hello, dear! Thanks for tuning in, and for your lovely words.
This interview was shot in the same house where the Johnny Stompanato killing happened- we produced the 2001 TCM bio of Lana, featuring Cheryl Crane. The title of it is: "Lana Turner... A Daughter's Memoir." It is on the same DVD as TCM's release of "The Bad and The Beautiful"- her best picture, IMHO- and Kirk Douglas' opinion as well... we have an interview with him uploaded as well on our channel- do you know the David Raksin theme song? It's majestic... Theme from"The Bad & The Beautiful"

I am deeply gratetul to you for making this interview available on UA-cam. I particularly admire the classic films made between the 20's and the 60's, the great Hollywood stars (such as Lana Turner, Susan Hayward, Ginger Rogers, Claudette Colbert, Rosalind Russell, Jane Wyman, Loretta Young, Margaret Sullavan, Barbara Stanwyck, to mention a few) and treasure material such as this. Juanita Moore made a major impression on me when I saw IMITATION OF LIFE and I always remember her performance as Annie with emotion. I was sad to learn of her passing when I watched the tribute to the stars that left us last year during the Academy Awards this past Sunday. Thanks again and congratulations on your good work!

I want to express my thanks for this interview. I've never seen such extensive footage of Ms. Moore. She is such an unsung actress. Thank you for allowing us to have this glimpse of her. Was it easy to get this interview? I have often wanted to see an interview with her. I was very disappointed, at first, when I realized that the focus of the interview was only on Lana Turner. I kept thinking, what a wasted opportunity; however, do you know which scene caused 23 retakes? Ms. Moore never says.

Another great interview. Love the Lana memories. It reaffirmed my belief that she was probably lots of fun before the Stompanato tragedy! I saw an old Bob Hope special on UA-cam where she was the guest. She was so natural and bubbly and such a good sport.
I loved how Juanita Moore refers to the film as the "show " This is the2nd interviewee, don't remember the first , who refers to the movie as the "show" . Was that typical ?
Are there Cheryl Crane, Del Armstrongs coming up ?

I came across IoL on Netflix. Out of curiosity I googled ms Moore for interviews. What I found interesting but not surprising is that not one movie poster for this movie features Ms. Moore. Even though in many ways it was her characters story line that was the most pivotal in the movie.

Wow, this is good stuff. I have always thought art imitates life and she just proved it. My daughters have had children tell them they didn't act black enough or look black enough. Others called them names. In certain conversations they do not know what to do because of some of the cruel things people can say.

@soapbxprod Thanks for your reply. The beach scene sounds feasible, but, given this interview, it doesn't seem likely that Lana Turner would have been in a state to assist Ms. Moore in the death scene tirelessly as described. What about the scene where Annie tells the Christmas story?
My calculations suggest that Ms. Moore was about 77 years old when she gave this interview. She looks great.

I get the impression the interviewer wanted Ms. Moore to say something unknown or unkind about Lana. This interview should have been called "Juanita Moore on Lana Turner". I am so pleased she didn't give her what she wanted and I hope Ms. Moore was well compensated.

How wonderful to see such a talented and largely forgotten actress. Thank you for showcasing her. Perhaps you should consider changing the title to "Juanita Moore: Memories of Lana Turner". The majority of the interview focused on what Juanita thought of or saw or felt about working with Lana Turner. I am guessing this was the intent of the interview. How nice it would have been to find out more about Moore. Nevertheless I still say thank you.

Is this meant to be a piece about Lana Turner? For the life of me can’t figure out why Langer uses 3/3 segments to center Turner while seated before the affable, gifted, insightful Ms. Moore. What’s the time code where Moore gets to represent her process; her POV; her history; her experience of the fraught scenes withOUT serving as a foil to Turner? All 3 segments feel like Langer probing the astoundingly patient Ms. Moore for gossipy tidbits, observations and even analyses of the “whys” for Turner. What a wasted moment using Moore to analyze Turner’s POV especially when researching Moore for insight into being an Artist of color on this film about the issues explored. Yuk.
