Love this, my Mum was a patient in the RAI on and off for a few years, I remember it being beautiful inside, a wee trip down memory lane for me, thankyou.
Thank you for showing us this stunning old hospital, I worked here with a team of eight guys for two weeks when it was a nursing home back in 2002. We completely redecorated all the rooms and corridors. Council bureaucracy had a big part in the buildings sad end.
My wee great granny was a patient in that part of the hospital before being moved to an annex on the grounds. I remember the semi-circle verandas and being served lime cordial from a large plastic jug while residents sat around in the nearby tv room. It was lovely but sad place. Still know her room when I drive past.
Had my appendix removed in 1965 when I was only 7 in the RAI. In those day that meant two weeks in hospital. I vaguely remember sitting out in a huge metal chair with other patients on one of the curved balconies at the end of the ward. I also have memories of a cranky old elevator with iron gates but that’s not on your video. Perhaps it was taken away years ago. Thanks for posting this. Really interesting but a shame this old building is being left to rot and decay
At 9.30 it shows the kitchen where I worked when I was sixteen. I haven’t seen the place since 1985 and I remember every inch of the it. I have so many memories here. Thanks so much for this video.
I live just up from this place, and as a youth I love exploring this building, this beautiful piece of architecture is one of my favourite places to go, as it fills me with a sense of the uncanny, and in my opinion I think the graffiti shows how a place with no worth to most people, is a canvas for creativity, it’s a great place and it’s a shame that others my age can’t respect it
My old hospital from the 60's till early 80's, been in there a few times in my youth, broken bones, stitches etc. What I always remember is was how clean it was, it was sparkling clean inside. I hope they start renovating soon, before it gets burned to the ground, it has a very important part in Paisley's history.
I remember my mum working in there when it was the care home. The building was really spooky especially where the kitchens and laundry were on the ground floor. It was such a beautiful building inside, it’s sad to see it in such a state now 😢
It’s horrible too see some people thinking it’s cool to ruin and vandalise the building, maybe a lack of respect? I’m not sure. I remember back in the day sitting in the canteen on the ground floor waiting for my wee mum to finish her shift umpteen times a week. Think where the “new kitchen”/laundry was around the location of the old RAI’s mortuary. Funny thing now thinking back, that long ground floor still freaks me out haha. The stairs near the lift shaft were awful i always thought someone stood there, I must only have been about 10/11 years old back then so imagination was running wild. Cheers for showing the video it brought back some happy memories
I had no idea that this was abandoned, as I moved away from the area years ago. I remember going there as a child with broken ankles etc, and visiting my grandpa there in one of the wards. So sad to see it in that state.
I can imagine that there's a lot of asbestos on the site and lead paint. It would be a hard job to get rid of it all. I've watched a few of your videos it's good reporting. I hope the police are still friendly. You could say that you are reporters researching abandoned buildings. Good work keep it up. Stay safe
Great video, I live a short walk away from here, thank you and I admire the respect that you all have when visiting your locations and the factual info you give on them
i had a major surgery in this hospital and remember the staff were brilliant i was about 11 years old and shared a ward with about 10 very old men very vivid memory.
i worked as a chef 1977to 1985 and yes that was a grand ceiling in the kitchen, there was also an underground tunnel that led to the mortuary in an external building. The domed ceiling was the patient and visitor entrance ,so sad to see it this way ,Iremember the circular balconies with patients in bed being wheeled out to enjoy the sun when it shone
My family all went here before it shut. I was always told how stunning the inside was. It still looks gorgeous even with all the neglect, but it would have been amazing to see it in its prime. I go by it a lot and have always wanted to go in. Its a shame its been abandoned for so long. Probably no saving it now.
The modern equivalent of this building will last about 50 years. You're right that at some point it likely became too expensive to update, but In my opinionit would be better to update a building like this than replace it with the flimsy plasterboard and curtainwall rubbish we build now.
A building like that should never have been allowed to fall into such disrepair. It'll cost way too much to reinstate that building now. How sad. But you're mighty brave to go into a derelect building like that. Looked like a real creepy excursion. But thank you - it was really interesting to see.
I believe that this building is now up for sale by auction. I have passed it often. Interesting to get a closer look in your video. The architecture is amazing nothing like the new builds of today. It’s a shame about all the mindless vandalism and graffiti. I hope a buyer is found to possibly restore this building The old Abbey Mill in Paisley was restored from derelict to modern flats. Hopefully this building can have a similar future
Great video I do hope the rest of the main buildings do get restored, I have explored many abandoned hospitals and industrial buildings particularly in the late 80s and early nineties and so much architecture has been lost over the last years for reasons from costly expensive conversions to they were left for to long and were in an advanced state of decay...swept away only to be replaced with rabbit hutch soulless type housing ....our Victorian engineer's would not be pleased if they were around today.
Spot on there! We also hope the building can find another use, rather than just it's land. The people that constructed the building would not be impressed, that's for sure! It's almost disrespectful
I stay about 10 minutes from here and walk past it a lot so it was nice to have an idea of what it looked like inside and I think I seen an estate agent had a listing up for flats in here so hopefully some of it will be saved.
Nice video lads! With graffiti (in at least my opinion) it all just depends... if the graffiti is done in a very decayed building, or on a building that holds no significants then I see no harm in it, and even applaud the artist for creating a nice piece of artwork. However if it is done in a building with lots of significants or on some beautiful architecture, even on something that holds a lot of sentiment for someone then I would say it can become mindless vandalism!
That makes sense and we agree with you. A ruined building of no historical significance with modern, boring design would be a haven for graffiti of all sorts, but something like this hospital, with incredible architecture and a detailed history, should stray away from being vandalised, in order to respect the architects that made it.
Within Paisley When you say Royal Alexandria Hospital this refers to the newer current hospital, The old hospital is referred to as the Royal Alexandria Infirmary ! RAH Vs RAI is a big distinction round these parts still great video !!!

Great video. Sadly, the owner of this building seems content to sit on this property until it degrades sufficiently or burns down and they can build something new, and they have thus far managed to sidestep attempts to force their hand and sell the property to someone who'll actually do something with it.
The old firestation lay empty for years then it got rescued. Hopefully same will happen for this old Gem with all its character. Even if they were to save a part of it at least it would not all be gone forever.
Responsible and considerate exploring lads! As mentioned by others, watch out for Asbestos and other hazardous materials. I could see in the basement what could be asbestos on the steam pipeline, that could explain why there's no graffiti there. Hazardous materials are one of the reasons the buildings become too expensive to refurbish and have to be abandoned. Denbigh Asylum had loads of it in the service culvert. I believe there's hardly the budget to decommission nuclear sites in the future so don't be surprised when a lower risk building like this isn't properly processed. If you get sick in the future, you'll have absolved any claim by having entered the property without permission. Rule of thumb with asbestos is to prevent the dust from getting airborne, so it's safest when wet and undisturbed.
I don't think graffiti has any place in abandoned buildings - it ruins the heritage of the place and just encourages more vandalism and graffiti. It starts a vicious circle which helps contribute to a buildings total decay. The worst example I've seen recently is on a walk to an abandoned mine where vandals decided to graffiti trees. What even?!
This property is already wrecked to a high degree. We also sighted multiple access points and youths and vandals are consistently finding new ways inside, so it's unlikely the showing of entry in this video will have any affect at all
Love the video! Beautiful architecture and so sad about how far gone it's gone. Vandalism is tricky some gas it's places but not all and it has a place for it. Not when it destroys things however.
Fantastic video guys such a clear camera that you're using picks up every detail. I think graffiti has it's place but not in a historic buildings. It would be nice to someone bought it and turned it in something before it starts to fall down which would be a shame. 👍
What a shame another of Scotland’s hospitals is going to ruin! I think some graffiti artwork can be really good but when it comes to senseless words and profanities that’s a massive no to me, or when it’s done over beautiful woodwork, why not just use the plain wallls . Thanks for sharing .
I viewed a flat to purchase just spitting distance from it however as you can imagine this on your doorstep put me off especially at night where essentially your car would be parked just next to it. I think it will be left to many more years of ruin
It felt strange to us with the abandoned building connected to the inhabited flats, but with the location close to Glasgow, some people will deal with the 'fear' just for a modern place to sleep.
I know I am VERY late. I believe the graffiti is young people just being destructive. Not all younger, and sure older people involved with it to. It breaks my heart when I see the destruction. Even if getting destroyed, no destruction is needed. Enjoy it as is, and the history it has.
Grafitti is vandalism, but can still have worth. Depends on the message, and your own view of things. Historic graffiti though, there's another consideration.
Isn't it shameful that this incredible building is in such a state. Yes, costs would be high to repair, but had they been repaired with more care in the past, it wouldn't have got in this state. Gorgeous structure - sadly neglected and no doubt some cheap crap build will go there at some point.
Graffiti can be a creative outlet even as vandalism to make a statement ,convey a message but to do so in abandonedments seems pointless imo. You could argue the greatest acts of vandalism are by those who allow these buildings to fall into such disrepair in the first place.
To answer your question I personally think graffiti has its place in the world however not in these buildings. These beautiful buildings have an amazing story to tell of their own and should be allowed to be seen in their natural decayed state as a mark of respect for what they once represented.
We think this building is listed, but that doesn't mean it can immediately be converted, there are a lot of other things that have to be taken into account
I can imagine that there's a lot of asbestos and lead paint in the place. But buildings like this shouldn't go to rot. Nice to know its a listed building. I hope the police are still friendly with you
When you put up a painted sign say no parking is it graffiti or vandalism ?? is a Banksy art work graffiti or vandalism ?? is it down to the person looking at it and what they see and ware it is
When I was on holiday in Italy as a child, I remember seeing graffiti that was incredibly intricate and beautiful. Huge pieces of street art that must have been done by several people over several days. That was beautiful, and I don’t doubt that even a couple of minutes’ searching online could find any number of stunning pieces of street art. I do believe that it can be an amazing art form, as well as potentially a unique way for some folk to express themselves creatively when they might not have another outlet. But, seeing just people’s names or rude/inappropriate things haphazardly spraypainted onto any old surface doesn’t speak to me of self-expression. It just makes me sad. It’s not my place to definitively draw a line dictating what is and isn’t “art” based on my own tastes, but I can’t deny that a lot of graffiti comes across as disrespectful and callous to me. So, overall, not a fan, but with the huge caveat that mine is not the last word on the subject.
Thanks for sharing what you thin, we agree completely. Some graffiti can be amazing and detailed, but the casual garbage can be annoying to see in a historical place.
Answer to the question: i think graffiti that isnt that big is fine, only if it matches with the architecture on the building to make it look a tiny bit better.
A think its beyond saving as theres still alot of left. And the graffiti does make it look worse, alot worse, is there any part of it that didnt have graffiti.
It’s vandalism. Art, like music it needs to be filtered. Nobody wants to listen to a squawking singer while shopping and the same is true for poor quality art. Mindless graffiti is disrespectful to the general public’s taste and it should only be exhibited in places with permission. Art is only special when it’s wanted. If it’s everywhere it loses value.
I was born here... sad to see such a beautiful building's decline

One of the most beautiful buildings you have explored so far, it's probably beyond saving as the cost would be uneconomical, such a shame ☹

Sad to say it's currently on fire - 16th March 2022
I’ve been here before very creepy!

Here in 2022 living in Paisley on the 16th mar there has been a fire in this building at 8-9 pm

That place has just been burnt down tonight.
Grafitti is vandalism, but can still have worth. Depends on the message, and your own view of things. Historic graffiti though, there's another consideration.
I doubt any form of “creative output” would be worthy of recognition if its inside of an abandoned and derelict building

That is very true and an interesting concept to end with.
To answer your question I personally think graffiti has its place in the world however not in these buildings. These beautiful buildings have an amazing story to tell of their own and should be allowed to be seen in their natural decayed state as a mark of respect for what they once represented.

Is it possible to get the building listed status get it rebuilt and turn it into housing or hotel
We think this building is listed, but that doesn't mean it can immediately be converted, there are a lot of other things that have to be taken into account
I can imagine that there's a lot of asbestos and lead paint in the place. But buildings like this shouldn't go to rot. Nice to know its a listed building. I hope the police are still friendly with you
No furniture, had to have been an NHS establishment.
Too many damn vandals!!
Everywhere we went!
I bet it smells really damp there …
When you put up a painted sign say no parking is it graffiti or vandalism ??
is a Banksy art work graffiti or vandalism ??
is it down to the person looking at it and what they see and ware it is
I guess art is subjective...
That’s my irl name-
Yes I think it's always mindless vandalism. The building would always be better without it.
Tagging, if done propertly is one of the best forms of urban art out there. Ask Robbie!
Can u tel me if the hospital is stil standin plz
Yes I was in it today
Renfrewshire council will make sure it goes up in smoke so they can build horrible flat's.
don't know why it looks as if the life and soul has been sucked out of this building
I think the fire damage has faded a lot of the colour.
I don’t like graffiti of any kind in a building. I feel it destroys the look of the structure.
