Nice Playing... and Great Honesty..
I really like having Dominant Pro strings on one of my violins. The lower tension gives a sense of being gut, while the intonation is completely stable. My other violin had similar problems as you described.

My opinion is that G string sounds amazing 👏 And all the other strings are wonderful too!
Most E strings are steel. In a synthetic set of sets the G, D, and A strings are of course made of a synthetic core, but the E string is a steel strand usually plated with a metal such as tin, gold, platinum, brass, or sometimes just stainless steel. There are no synthetic E strings because the string is too thin to house a synthetic core. There are gut core E strings as well, but most people who use those are baroque players and even some baroque players will still use a steel E string along with their gut core G, D, and A strings. There are also wound E strings but they are still a steel E string wound with some sort of metal usually aluminum which makes the string sound warmer and usually makes the string less prone to whistling, but sometimes at the expense of projection. There are good steel E strings, but there are also bad steel E strings.
The dominant pro E string is definitely a bad one. When I tried the set the string was nothing special and whistled a lot and was pretty tinny. For E strings I like Jargar (usually forte), gold label, and goldbrokat. These E strings are steel E strings, but they are really good steel E strings. I get warmth, clarity, power, color, and whistling is almost zero.
As for the rest of the dominant pro set, I had the same experience. The G string was a little muddy on my violin and I had a wolf high up on the G string around C5. It also didn't really have any power or complexity. And I also thought the D and A strings were just okay. They got the job done. I took off the E string and threw it away after about 10 minutes of playing on it and swapped it to a jargar. The G string sound did improve a little bit, but not enough for me to keep the set on over other sets I've tried.
My current favorite set of strings are the Thomastik Rondo. I get power, warmth, clarity, color, and no wolf in high G-string positons. Also in my experience, they last quite a while. I've had my current set on for 3 months so far and they still have the same quick response that they had when I first put them on and still have a good edge to them. On my violin, the E string sounded good (when new; once it gets tarnished and old it kind of cracks under the bow) but it whistled on my violin. I like the Jargar forte with the Rondo set.
I definitely recommend trying the Rondo strings. I get them from Southwest strings.

Yeah, I think she refers to the excessive “steel” sound and squeeze this particular steel E has. I tried these with a 27 gauge goldbrokat, had similar thoughts to you both. The G just doesn’t seem to want to move, very difficult to articulate, a lot of surface noise. D and A are ok, but I don’t feel anything special about them, to me they feel just like a louder version of regular dominant. Initially I thought they might have a long break in period, after about 20 hours I gave up and change back to Pi

I’ve had a love hate relationship with Dominants. They have always been known for the whistling E.
Currently, I have Dominant’s and a Westminster E strung up on my old fiddle😎.
Do you prefer the old school Dominants over the Pro series?

I have changed my violin into dominant pro and have the violin maintenance by my violin Luther. He said the thickness of the dominant pro strings are significantly different from the general used strings. The A string is nearly the same or even thicker than the G string. My Luther has to carve and fill the gap onto the different string nut, and also move the bridge location to complete its set up. If you want to full use the dominant pro, u may need to have a different violin setting. Dominant pro strings are bright in tone, and I admitted that the E string is way too sharp and scratchy in sound..
@@kingsonicknick3926 I ended up having a new nut made for the strings too. In my case I was having difficulty with left hand pizzicato on low notes on the G string.
I have been collecting violins for the past 25 years. I have tried practically all the strings . For me the combo I like best is Peter Infeld with Eva Pirazzi gold E . The Peter Infeld G D and A are all almost the same thickness and the Eva E is also thicker than most other E strings

The dominant pro worked out well for me tho... I bought the pro and the regular Dominant, tried both on my new violin. The pro worked better bcos of my low bridge. It might depend on the tension of the violin and the string feeling ones finger is used to.
I saw your Il Cannone installing video but never saw your review on them. After using them for a while, what’s your opinion on them? How do they compare to other high-end strings ( maybe even a video about them 🙃?)

Aren’t all e strings steel unless you’re playing baroque plain gut strings? I wonder if the harshness of the other strings made the e string sound harsh too?
Brilliant and warm doesn't exist (yet), but those strings sound fine to me.

Aside from plain gut, modern e-strings are generally made from steel. They may be plain steel, plated steel, or wrapped steel. What e-string is made from synthetic material? The Dominant Pros actual sound very nice on your demo. But it may be difficult to hear the nuances due to the compressed sound and my listening equipment. Thanks for the your review.
The sound sample at 12:13 .... absolutely fine. I'm both a professional music and sound engineer ... really the strings sound fine! I've used about 20 - 30 different string sets and really, I've heard genuinely bad strings as opposed to what you were describing. In the first part of the video I was thinking "oh no... they are going to sound like Piranito strings or Chinese factory steel strings" but then you played and I just thought they sounded very nice. Yes, a little bright, but at least you can project over an orchestra or piano! Perhaps it's just harsh under your ear?
Many factors to think of.
They do sound completely different under my ears. I just didn’t enjoy. Very harsh.
@@Violinista That is fair enough. Have you played those strings for other people though? Or had someone else play your violin to you (while you listen from a distance)? Of course you have to be comfortable with what you're listening to, but there's also a decent chance that it produces a great sound when in the concert hall! A compromise you could make if you're willing to.
I personally love my gold-wound Evah G-string and although it sounds very bright under my ear (and doesn't quite match the Peter Infeld D string sitting right next to it when I'm listening to it), by the time the sound reached the audience, if they're sitting at least 5 metre away, then the sound is perfectly balanced and the best setup for my violin. The Peter Infeld G string doesn't quite match the D and A on my violin.

I had similar experience with you. I played regular dominant, pi, and vision solo before, this set feels so difficult to articulate, very hard to get the string moving. To me they have a lot of grit, an unpleasant amount of surface noise. Maybe it’s my violin or bow, ended up taking them off after 2 weeks.

Same here. When playing Pianissimo, the string takes a moment to respond. But I tried with a heavier bow and it solves the problem. I think different bows and rosins will affect this issues.
Honestly, I wish they would just improve on the original dominants. The dominant pros to me sound too nasally.

I use Goldbrokat gold e strings. They have a warmer sound to me.

@@haniazd you are correct. Unless you are using a gut E string, all E strings are steel or stainless steel at their core. Some are plated with other metals or wound with aluminum, but there is no such thing as a synthetic core E string for violin.
I just ordered these strings. I don't know why but the Thomastik e strings are just horrible they sound like tin nails on a chalkboard. With Thomastik use the Optima Golkobrat E string, Pirastro Gold, or Evah E string it helps to balance them out. Thanks for your review! It might be that set does not work for your violin. The ones I don't like on my violin are the Vision and Vision Titanium Solo. I had Titanium solo and THEY WERE AWFUL. It really was it was harsh and metallic like as if I was using red label again. So then I swapped strings with my stand partner, he didn't like the punch on his strings and that's how I discovered and loved Larsen Cannone. I don't use the regular dominant because I like to have that brilliant punch on my projection because it makes me feel like a soloist playing in Carnegie Hall lol. The ones so far I love from thomastik are the Infeld Red and Blue and you can mix up the sets for the match to your violin. I REALLY want to try the TI but they're not available in the US. Next I'm trying PI and Rondo

@@Violinista Thomastik TI. It's supposed to have more brilliance than the Infeld Blue and Vision. Thomastik Rondo is now in the US previously only available in European Luthiers, but the Rondos cost more than Peter Infeld strings they are $115 which is why i get my strings from SWStrings no tax

@@karas.5757 I used visions and they sounded muddy. So I did the titanium solo and they just don't work for me. I even did all the tips to break them in faster it has a harsh sound and if you look at reviews on the strings from other sites and from luthier vlogs they said it's hard to find violins titanium solo work with.
Your playing is lovely, but these strings are not. Just like the regular Dominants, they’re okay, but nothing special (IMO). They just don’t do anything for me and these in particular sound overly nasal. At this price point, I would expect better.

To me, they sound similar to PI strings.

@@Violinista I have not tried PI! I want to try PI, Rondo and the TI but the TI aren't in the US yet
