I totally agree with the conviniences of the condo life, especially if you're a bachelor. In fact, it's not only for the Philippines. My primary residence is in Hawaii and it's nice to be able to just lock up my condo while I travel throughout the Philippiines. However, buyers beware! I have yet to live in a condo in the Philippines where the quality is up to my standards. Just rent! The only exception was the high end condos in BGC (ie. Hyatt Residence). In regards to living in BGC, I found my social and dating life suffered a bit there. Can't quite put my finger on this but I will definitely give it another try once I've found the right girl.

I live in BGC as well. One of the worst things about living in condos is dealing with your electric bill. You don’t deal with the company you deal with some dude riding down numbers and that’s your reading so if you have any altercations with administration, your power bill will go up 1000. It’s pretty shady, but that’s what you deal with.

    • @JJthelonelybullinasia

I've never had an issue with my electric bill, and it's always less than what I hear most expats are paying in the province. My highest bill was something like 4,400php back a couple months ago when we had the heat wave.

right on spot I was raised in a small town, and I don't want to go back to live only to visit. province life is not worth it because its unlivable for us expats. for the Filipina, she loves it because she is used to it throwing water on the restroom floor and the toilet. I tried that with a Filipina and it was a disaster for me nothing close by.

You guys are proving my point. I want to live in BGC for everything you’re saying. I am disabled so will need to go to the VA occasionally but here in the states it’s a struggle but there I can live a life of leisure and not really worry about things. I can send a Filipina to the markets for fresh veggies and fruit for Pennie’s. Which here in the states that would break the bank. I currently live full time in a RV traveling the states. I have a year planned to make myself debt free and ready to move there. Plane tickets will hurt but I will have no worries paying.

What is the “real Philippines”? Yes there are poor areas there, just like in almost any other country in the world. For example, California has the 5th largest economy in the world, but has over 180,000 homeless people living in the state. California is also #1 in the entire country for effective poverty rate (how much your income is vs. how much it costs to live where you are). BGC is a wealthier area and it’s not even nearly the wealthiest place in the Philippines. Poverty is a part of the Philippines and so are the wealthy areas. The “real Philippines” is different from person to person. The real Philippines for me will be living in a larger city, but also farm life a couple of days a week.

Try living in the provinces, with the noise, smoke, air pollution, traffic, disputes with your neighbours, roosters, constant barking dogs, mosquitos, never ending humidity, thieves, cheap substandard housing, and much much more. I can guarantee you, you will never be bored, that is if boredom bothers you. Something to consider.

Living on the beach full time is not my cup of tea. The idea sounds great until you actually do it.
It’s hot, swimming in salt water gets old. Finding a place in the province near a beach is harder than you think. Issues I ran into was things like the neighbors were raising pigs in their front yard, a guy has 10 fighting cocks staked out in their huts close by, the beach a low tide is a mud flat, the nice beach is too far from town and borderline dangerous due to bandits, or the lot you really like does not have a “clear title” and you’d be crazy to buy it.
Swimming in a freshwater pool, using the gym in the condo, shopping and restaurants, seems like the way to go.
Then go to a beach resort now and then, but don’t live at the beach.

I originally picked Cebu for my soft landing, now I'm going to Iloilo. Mainly because of the infrastructure and the walking esplanades. However, I'm landing in Cebu for 5 days just to get rid of the jet lag and see some of the malls there, then on to Iloilo city. Is Iloilo a good choice for a soft landing? I'll be staying at the Quest Hotel while in Cebu like you mentioned before.

This was a great vid for expat newbies (like me). I've always been a country boy, but there's a big difference between the US where Amazon will put it on your doorstep in couple of days and you can be in town in 10 or 15 minutes, and the province where things are a bit closer to the bone. Plus I seem to have become somewhat dependent on hi speed internet. Good timing for me. I may wind up in a house, but a condo seems a better place to start.

I travel internationally every 1-2 months, and on the world stage BGC is rather sub-par so far as a city goes. This August I'll be in NYC, Emirates first class to Athens, then Istanbul, then Singapore. Cities with more character than just buildings.

After a while living in a condo feels like living in a hotel.

I would feel that way in a studio unit, so having a 1 bedroom and a larger unit with a full kitchen doesn't feel like a hotel room at all. Plus being on the 29th floor in a corner unit, I have a spectacular view that feels like a penthouse.

In Google search "condo rental [name of location] Philippines" and that will usually lead you to the various real estate agents or brokers. Also, some high-rise buildings handle their own listings.
Probably best to retain a free broker. Tell em what you need, they will find it for you.
I have one broker sending me weekly updates here in San Francisco, California, so I can see what's out there.

Condos are a losing investment in the PH. You gain nothing, and when it’s time to sell, you won’t be able to sell your property for years. Better to buy in Japan. You get more profits

I agree that living in a condo is the 100% right choice for me. The only/biggest negative was the staff - mentally - kept track of the number of girls that would come to your room - and you would develop a negative reputation for plowing through the local young girls. I was told by one of the security guards who became a good friend - that I was becoming a topic of conversation of the staff - and I ought to slow down on the frequency. (16 girls in 4 months). I eventually landed on one - and quickly my status went from horny foreigner - to family man - and my girlfriend became a local celebrity as EVERYBODY knew her as the one that tamed me.

Intriguing. In Jomtien I've invited FAR fewer girls to visit me, than the months I was in hotels. Part of the reason is my condo has a guard gate staffed 24-7. Hotels were a front desk staff (and not all asked guest ID). It's a reputation issue for me. I'm less worried about the guys judging me, than adjusting to a more permanent, long term fiscal lifestyle. I'm not on vacation

Filipina will tell expats how nice and simple life the province is and from experience don't believe that crap. that's her way of setting you up to take care of her family. stay in the city and enjoy life there and if she wants you then she will be with you in the city.

Thanks for the video about condo living. Why do you always just talk about MEN coming to the Philippines? And why are you always so interested in dating? I'm a widow planning to retire in the Philippines. I'm happy being single.what is it with you men? It boggles the mind actually.🙄

Caroline, I think you might be surprised that as a western widow retiring in the Philippines you might find the dating thing back on the table again. There are many men that are probably over getting scammed from the local ladies and would look for someone sweet and kind and honest to spend some social time to enjoy a good conversation with.

Where else can you go where a 30 year old woman - wants me - a 64 year old man? The women want the relationship more than men do. It's counterintuitive to our western minds - but it's a reality in the PH.

    • @stevemorris3544
      @stevemorris3544 Місяць тому

Caroline, if you watch Gio’s channel you must not be reading or looking at the comments. If you did you would see a 99%+ male response so of course he is going to respond to the majority of his audience. Reading your comment, you say you are a widow happy being single, great that’s wonderful for you. Rather than being happy for men wanting to date you say: Why are you so interested in dating, What’s it with you men, it boggles the mind. demeaning at best. Definitely sounds like you are done and expired when it comes to men but it doesn’t mean we are, especially when we can have a traditional, younger or not, loving, caring, beautiful, woman in our lives that the west lacks. You want to retire to the Philippines, enjoy when you get here. Smiles
