- "LET 'EM LOOK!" - OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH EPISODE 5 REACTION!
Best. Episode. Yet.
So funny, so much character depth, so satisfying!
I think my favourite thing about this episode is how much relationship building we saw:
Stede and Edward. Lucius and Black Pete. Izzy versus Everyone.
Can't wait for the next one!
Check out the rest of my reactions to the series here!

"They're friends now" it's wild to see the straight mind working
i genuinely do not understand how they function like how do you see that scene and think 'oh haha buddies'
*watches an incredibly soft and sweet scene with romantic music playing the the background where Ed literally steps forward like he's about to kiss Stede* "Haha, yeah, they're buddies now!"
don't worry....soon he will see... :-)
shhh
i am very excited for his reaction at ep 9.
I can’t believe Izzy Hands invented homophobia just to internalize it
Oh my god yes...
THIS LOL
Just two good friends looking into each other's eyes under the full moon being just pals 🥰
Completely straight pals in a romantic setting im the moonlight
Ya know when you sway towards your good buddy after they say something to sooth an insecurity you’ve had for decades? And you’re gazing at each other in the moonlight?
Just good pals
fellas is it gay for your good buddy to tell you you wear fine things well under the light of the moon to then lean and look at each other wistfully
@@Elizabeth-bz7jr I don't know mate... Just pals being friends ya know
Fellas is it gay to be co captains?
"Nice, the're friends now" HAHAHAHAHAHHA
just couple of besties
Oh I can't wait for the future episodes lol
Reminds me of that one vine, oh honey you’ve got a big storm coming 😂
Heteronormativity is a hell of a drug😂
Just guys being pals
Nice, they're friends now???
*insert tune* And historians will call them, close friends, besties, roommates, collegues....
Oh my god they were close friends!
straight reactors are so funny pls “they’re friends now” fam, he almost leaned in to kiss him there💀
Yeah bro I’m not the most astute sometimes lol
@@GlenOwen 😭😭😭
That was kind of obliviously adorable of you, and now I'm going to watch your other reaction videos. I did this one first because it's my favorite.
I love that you called Ed a tender man. He is that.
Aww, you cut the "You wear fine things well" scene! All things considered, this episode is so great for Stede. Him getting the chance to rescue Blackbeard is such a nice subversion of what you'd expect, and it's cool to see him totally in control of a situation for once
"They're friends now" Man, straight dudes are so oblivious sometimes. Glad you're enjoying the show though
Lucius and Black Pete are indeed a great couple. That scene with Izzy catching them is... Interesting. Izzy has some serious issues, lol.
I loved how badly Ed wanted to go to the party but initially played disinterested, then caught everyone's eye but they ended up turning on him. All the characters have a surprising amount of depth to them; I felt really bad for Ed after the dinner scene.
The Oluwande and Frenchie stuff this episode was definitely one of the highlights. As was "You wear fine things well." Looking forward to more reactions!
We're definitely sleeping on Olu and Frenchie's scheme, it was such a good highlight. We also got a tiny bit of backstory for Frenchie 💜💜
Tureen is a fancy soup bowl! So Stede is being Stede and doing is passive aggression of how the captured captain isn't rich enough to have decent bowl.
That was a great comment from him! Dissing the Captain, and thus deffending Ed, while simultaneously calming him down! And later telling him "If you feel overwhelmed, we can always leave", as someone with social anxiety and ADD, that means so much!
That's a great husband!
It's more like a punch bowl for soup so it's the main serving vessel that you bring to the table.
I do have to say; watching you absolutely enjoy Black Pete throughout the show, then finding some appreciation for Lucius, and then the both of them getting together in this episode is just absolutely fantastic.
Thanks Alan! Honestly didn’t even think of that. Sometimes I do you watch what I’m doing and even then I noticed smaller details that I wish I saw the first time.
"Friends now" ah yeah good all pals
Jeff the accountant has so much swag lmao
All the swag
Loved the reaction! One of my favorite episodes just for pure comedy and some character development. Everybody was on point. I love the “Pyramid Scheme” and “Nigerian Prince” jokes. The first time I heard them, it took me out lol.
Love it!
I haven't seen a tureen or phrenologist explanation, so... A tureen is a deep, covered serving dish which holds soups, stews, etc. And phrenology was a pseudo-science which purported that the shape of and bumps in your skull were evidence of intelligence levels, specific personality traits, and a person's overall character. A separate note: I'm so enjoying your reactions to this show. Thank you for reacting to it!
Ty so much!!!
@@GlenOwen Absolutely! I should also mention that phrenology was explicitly used to "justify" slavery, colonization, genocide, etc. And it was very much a thing into the 20th century.
This episodes my favorite. Between Taika Waititi’s expressions revealing so much about Blackbeard, “don’t listen to a man who doesn’t have a single Taureen on the ship!”, Lucius/Pete, and the pyramid scheme, the tables turning so that it’s Stede who is saving Ed this time, that soft ending scene… it’s just all so good. The episodes getting better too, but this is my fav.
"Nice, they're friends now! :)" Honey, you got a big storm coming.
Oh no! Y’all might be giving it all away!

Love your description of Ed's behavior as like a 15yo boy when he's dealing with emotions he doesn't want to deal with. I feel like that's real accurate! This is one of my favorite episodes, for a number of reasons, including the Black Pete/Lucius reveal! Plus more insight into Ed's past and motivations.
Hello, I'll be your google assistant today.
The tureen is a soup serving bowl that has two handles and a lid - essentially a fancy ceramic pot.
To add a couple of things:
- A viceroy is a noble who exercises authority for the crown, especially in a colony. For example, the Spanish colonies in the Americas at the time were organized as viceroyalties (Indies in the Caribbean; New Spain in what is now Mexico and the Central American countries; Peru; New Grenada in Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, and Venezuela; and Rio Plata in Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina), each ruled by their own viceroy acting on the behalf of the Spanish monarchy.
- A phrenologist is someone who practices phrenology, the antiquated practice of using features of the skull to determine mental and personality characteristics. Phrenology is often invoked to describe pseudoscience and quackery. Interestingly, phrenology as a subject was not really around when Our Flag Means Death is set, not being formally defined until around 1796.
These reaction videos are very solid.
Pete and lucius are great! The pairings in this show are just as well written as the other, more humorous dynamics. Just with a bit more feelings
Aaaah why did you cut "you wear fine things well" 😭❤️
Awesome reactions though!!!! This video made my day! Can't wait for more!
maybe it's too gay for his delicate hetero brain...
7:06 probably because that's not actually a piano; that is a harpsichord, a keyboard instrument predating the piano that uses a system of plucked rather than hammered strings, creating a distinct sound. Unlike the later piano, the harpsichord was uncapable of dynamic variation (hence the full name of the piano, the "pianoforte.")
Subsequent rewatches really made me love this show much more. Izzy also grows on you on rewatches lmao
Shoutout to Con O’Neil for playing a character who doesn’t seem super funny at first but upon rewatches is easily the character I laugh at the most. His traumatized “😳OH my GOD!… 🥺 ohmygod, 🤬 Oh my GOD!” Will forever be my favorite singular moment in the entire show. I laugh every time.
Izzy is the best at being the worst! Con O’Neill plays him perfectly.
As awful as he is, I still feel a little bad for him. He loves Blackbeard, in his way, but that's not a way that's emotionally healthy for either of them.
@@Sharpe1502 I love that scene. What his little mind conjures up 😂 The question is why is that the first thing he thinks of?
You cut the most important scene AND call them friends? :D
I mean, what else could it be a couple of dudes looking into each others eyes under the full moon with cute background music?
@@isabelnine9548 Two bros chillin on a pirate ship, 1 handkerchief apart 'cause they're real gay
@@merrydamegnagna9907 I love this reply so much xDDD
🤣🤣🤣
All the tension during the "you wear fine things well" scene, and he says 'oh they're friends'.
It's hilarious but also frustrating lmao 🤣
" Friends" ahhhhh bless your heart!! just wait for it
I have to stop reading comments :P
The PHD comment took me out 🤣 Stede really be evaluating the pirating life!
"they're friends now" yeah💀
See my previous comment lol
“they’re friends now :)” dawg are we watching the same scene
I’m here for the “they’re friends now” comments
Oh, great reaction to this episode! I love how much you laughed! And yeah I think Blackbeard definitely gave Black Pete a run for his money this episode, but I'm glad that they focus on the crew relationships too, not just Stede. Loved the hearts edited onto the scene there, really added to it haha. It's interesting to note that Ed actually listened to Stede even when he was upset and ready to kill. Now that Stede and Ed are becoming closer, it's hard to see Ed actually following through on his plan to kill him. But you'll just have to wait and see what happens! There's still plenty of twists and turns to watch out for!
Stay blessed!
I keep loving these reactions. And Pete and Lucius are such a good pair!
When the servants were rowing away they make a joke about claiming to be a Nigerian Prince. Like those Emails.
Dude loving your reactions, but skipping over the pocket square scene and saying "Aww their friends now" My good sir that was pining you just witness
LOL, I’ll try do better. Sometimes it’s hard to get it all in!
Yeah. Friends…Can’t wait for the rest of the series 😜
this show is SO much fun!!!
“nice they’re friends now” 😭💀
Honestly I'm so glad you're reacting to this, I wish more people were. This is probably the most fun show thus far this year. (Also, short recomendation, you should react to Severance too.)
Ty for the recommendation!!!!
Love that "EmoTiOnAL DAmAgE" clip. 10/10 usage.
Oh bud! There’s going to be a bunch of fun edits in tomorrows!
@@GlenOwen
Nice!
A tureen is a big soup pot. Also, this episode shows Blackbeard can speak French (he understood the French captain when he said - in French - the treasure was below deck), he can read, and he can also play the harpsichord.
This is my favorite episode! The end of Stede’s game reminded me of the Remedial Chaos Theory episode of Community. 😂
I forget that episode. But love that show
@@GlenOwen It’s the one with the multiple timelines and Troy comes back to see Pierce shot, the apartment on fire, and a troll sitting on the floor.
"ThEy'Re fRiEnDs NoW" I spat my tea all over my screen LMAO
Like, I'm sorry but sometimes it's funny how heteronormativity makes people blind.
The scene is the opposite of subtle: under the moon, romantic music, Ed's pixar eyes, that hitch in the breath, the aborted gesture like he was gonna kiss Stede, the two of them looking back at each other...Those all are romantic tropes. Idk how someone can see all that and say "yeah, BFF" lol. It's a bit sad when you think about it, how so many people and stories are unseen.
I can appreciate your position!
I have a real issue with people being overtly and actionable homophobic/transphobic.
And, other people, are just open to learning and it takes some time for people to reprogram their brains to see things differently, which I hope it okay. I'd rather give people the space.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not trying to be combative at all. It's just that these conversations didn't exist for me until a decade ago and I recognize that sometimes we all need a little patience to see the world grow.
Can't wait for your finale reaction ❤❤
OOOOOOOH DADDY
Izzy has pretty much all of the issues! XD
Hahaaaa up late working and got a nice early morning surprise!!
Morning! I couldn't back to bed so I said "Screw it let's edit!"
fascinating to see straight people watch The Gay Pirate Show™
Why do you say that?
@@GlenOwen I started watching this show because people recommend it for it's awesome queer rep and because it's not queerbait. So I knew from the very beginning that it was going to be gay and from the moment Stede and Blackbeard met I immediately felt the romantic tension (you can even hear it, their romantic scenes always have Gnossienne nr5 in the soundtrack). It's actually really interesting to see how long it takes for someone who's not expecting this to pick up on that. Especially because you're not actively looking for characters to be queer (which is a thing we tend to do). The fact that it took you until ep 6 to see Stede as possibly gay and how a lot of queer symbolism and metaphors went completely over your head really puts things in perspective for me. The different way in wich a queer audience and a cishet audience interpret things is very often used to queerbait. In our flag means death the queer subtext gradually becomes more explicit until we don't even have to read it between the lines anymore. That's rare, sadly, we are not used to that.
To be clear I am not blaming you!!! You're fantastically cool about this and we love a pronoun-respecting ally!
@@Liessssssssssss
Got it. I appreciate you sharing your perspective.
I watched other UA-camrs talk about their experience of being black and watching movies.
One of the things they said, I think mirrors what you articulated.
They were frustrated because most of the main stream movies that featured people of their skin colour were highlighting the skin colour as an attribute that made them different or unique.
They were happy when they could just watch a movie where the main lead is black, but without that feature having anything to do with the plot.
And I agree with them. I think it creates positive role models.
I guess another way of saying it is, it’s awesome just to see yourself in a movie or show, and Not have to see it be about Different parts of how you identify that are prominent in the social cultural world.
The show was great because it’s about the merit and growth of the characters, And honestly, who cares how they identify or who they are attracted to. That stuff shouldn’t matter. Because really, that’s their business and no one else’s.
I hope this is taken in the most positive light possible
Every character is so fun!!!
“Nice. They’re friends now.”
I just… straight people… are y’all ok?
Nothing to do with his sexuality, loads of straight people got it "straight" away 😃
Looking forward to your reaction to ep 6!
hope u get to episode 9 lol
Promise
I will
I got so mad when I saw the last scene because I didn't know snything about the series. I thought it was just queerbaiting.
This is a show where it’s very easily to take it out of context. I can see where you come from
@@GlenOwen Nah. This was me watching it with the context of previous episodes. I thought it was just going to be another bromance.
So first of all, I hope you aren't annoyed by my dumb ass commenting on your year-old videos as I watch them. Secondly, I saw a fan comic once where Lucius showed Ed his sketch of Stede, which involved flipping the book sideways and folding out a page, after which Ed ran to the captain's quarters in a frenzy. Let me tell you, the fandom has quite the imagination, and I am here for it
