*watches, nods in gay approval and nonchalantly walks away*
And there it is. Yeah, imagine watching this, assuming you'll see the same queer coded and/or token queer characters. Hell, maybe even another queerbait buddy comedy. Then episode 5! Lucius is poly, sucks Pete off in front of Wee John, and almost gets a smooch with Izzy. Stede and Ed practically have a date that ends in a romantic moonlit moment and another almost kiss.
I had no clue it was going to be any sort of queer at all. I guess maybe a tiny bit cuz Taika's stuff always feels a little queer, but I was totally pleasantly actually surprised by all of what I thought was (just) a pirate show.
I remember, a year and a half ago now, how I screamed at the full moon scene. That little shuffle for the kiss-insane. Poor Ed chickening out-insane. The way they looked at each other after-insane. The longing-insane.
This scene rearranged my entire brain chemistry. I can pinpoint it as *the* moment I went from enjoying the silly pirate show to full-blown obsession over the show and the ship. I even made fanart of that scene and I rarely ever do that. The way everyone on Tumblr was losing their shit after eps 4,5 and 6 dropped and we were all just Guys, it's gay, they didn't tell us, but it is!!! It was wild times.
That being said, I rewatched your reaction to the scene of all time at least 7 times now, it encapsulates how I felt so well 😅 I rushed in to watch this as soon as I saw you'd uploaded and didn't notice the title until someone mentioned it, but yes, that is just 💯 It's my favourite scene for them to this day (we'll see what s2 will bring us 😅)
That scene makes my heart race as if it's happening to me! I _cannot_ get over it.
That scene is RIDICULOUSLY romantic, I melt even today, over a whole a$$ year after the finale. It makes me swoon!
@@PrincessNanette I can honestly say it's probably *the most* romantic scene in anything I've watched, just their silhouettes against the moon 🥰💜🏳️🌈🏴☠️
taika as blackbeard has a VERY dedicated sapphic fan base, so you are in good company.
he is our princess.
I'm dying to see your brain chemistry being altered by Taika in leather. We've all been there.
Fun Fact: the 'have you ever been sketched?' scene between Lucius and Izzy was filmed both with and without the near kiss. It wasn't written in the scene originally, but that's the take they used in the final edit.
Not only is it the prince of Nigeria scam but it's also a literal PYRAMID SCHEME. This show is so brilliant
This reaction is panic from start to finish and I LOVE IT!
4:28 oh that’s where you missed how Lucius and Black Pete where “taking stock” of things😂
And yes Con O’Neil (Izzy) has amazing delivery for all of his dialogue.
Fun fact: Con O’Neil is also totally unhinged when he does interviews and stuff for this series. For example he wore a shirt that says DADDY with rainbow colors to a convention for OFMD cast panel. He adores the fans attention, the fanfiction and the fanart🔥🏴☠️😆
This whole video is just *frantic queer noises*
yessssss i could write multiple essays about this episode there is so much interesting and juicy stuff in it but i'll try to keep it shorter than that. i owe christine wada and her team my life for the costume design in this show, and it is criminal she doesn't have a bazillion awards for her work here. i love that you had to pause on ed listening to stede when he told him to stand down because yeah, the fact that a firm tone takes him from ready to murder some dipshits to bratty pouts and huffy sighs makes me lose my damn mind, i love it so much. the moonlight scene still takes my breath away with the way stede says the most romantic shit with laser precision to devastate ed specifically, without even realizing what he's doing. and the way ed almost can't help but step forward to kiss him, but backs down when he realizes they're not quite on the same page.
i'll give you some insight into what it was like to watch this show when it aired, having only seen the promotional stuff that sold the show as a funny pirate comedy: i watched so much of it constantly bracing myself for a punchline in places that instead were written earnestly, sympathetically, and romantically. i wish i'd been able to trust it sooner, but so many of the early reviews called it a 'buddy comedy' or 'bromance' even though! the early screener packs! included this episode! truly a wild time.
yes, I thought that I wad "deastiel-ed" again
The moonlight scene made EVERYBODY go wait the fuck what????!! It was pandemonium.
There's a deleted scene that shows that Izzy is the one who puts Ed's little bread bows, and it makes me very sad that we've never seen it.
Taika is everybody's type ❤
I love every reaction you have to this show, especially the “you wear fine things well” scene. In the bts of that scene, they talked about making the moon too big and unrealistic because that’s how Ed and Stede see it in their minds ❤
We're all powerless in the wake of Taika with those eye, with that beard and hair and in those leathers. Even the more sapphically inclined of us because there's something both leather daddy and femme about him.
That title is EXACTLY how I felt watching that scene for the first time too. it felt like I was watching a goddamn fairytale and I loved it.
[watching Brittany swear fealty to another lean lounging guy who displays a ferocious disregard for the rules of sitting] Hey Jareth, Crowley, Zhao, Sherlock! You're getting some company. You boys play nice now...
(Also the childhood imprinting of Labyrinth makes a lot of sense actually. I'm asexual, but there's always something special I like about that sort of character.)
I´m sorry I´m not even watching yet THE TITLE lololol yes. yes.
Watching you go on this journey, knowing what you still have ahead of you, is such a treat! 😂
2:45 solidarity!!
5:35 the continuous spiraling about how great the camp is in this show is top notch
Great video, you are so funny. The sounds you made while watching the moonlight scene expresses absolutely why the OFMD fandom is insane (in the best possible way). 🤣
Yo for real though, we are so chill and so insane at the same time lmao but a cool fandom overall!! 😆
YESSS I WAS WAITING FOR THIS! my reaction to the "you wear fine things well" scene was the EXACT same as yours. and funnily enough, i had NO idea that the show was gonna be gay, so imagine my surprise! this episode got me HOOKED. i love it so much
That was the best reaction to the moonlight scene I've ever seen
I FELT ALL OF THIS. So much. Your whole reaction. Honestly, just wanna upload some cake for you or something. A drink?
Really, that´s all I have to say. You´re doing great (turning into a mess). They did not need to go so hard with everything and yet they did and here we are (remembering when we turned into a mess).
ALSO: the face Ed makes? Into his beard practically? When Stede talks him down? When Ed ~ lets Stede talk him down? That. Yes. What even IS THAT. Still can´t believe that happened and it´s been 1.5 ys.
i just love me some frenchie-oluwande inventing the pyramid scheme, i LOVE THEM
i watched a ton of ofmd reactions and your videos are easily one of my favourites, if not the favourites. you just get it. idk how to describe it better, but you just get it XD i will definitly watch more stuff on your channel, you are so cool!
I highly recommend the Good Omens reactions! That's how I found this channel, and they are amazing as well. I have laughed so much watching her reactions.
@@beautybabbling will do!
And HERE I'm throwing down my told-ya. 🎉 (So glad you gave in!)
8:17 ‘crashing into it with sheer abandon’ I’m creating a moodboard with words that describe this show’s Entire Thing and this is going at the top /j
please share it when you do! I'll put it on my laptop as the background.
She literally going 🤨 on the Lucius and Izzys moment, SAME GIRL 😂 gonna visit ao3 real quick dont mind me
Yeah, episode 5 is a bit of a sucker punch, innit?
What I love about our crew is that they are all idiots, each and every one no exceptions, but they all have at least one skill or area of expertise that is very context-specific. Handling and conning the snobby rich is Frenchie’s.
Leaving the boat on fire is so delightfully unhinged, with special shoutout to our man Abshir who stared directly at the place where the open flame knocked over and just nonchalantly watched it set the place ablaze.
"I can't be here! I have to leave!" yep
This is one of the most entertaining reaction series I have ever watched. (And I watch a LOT of reactions.)
Heyy I love OFMD!!! I'm so happy to have you on board (pun intended haha) with us!! We're a chill fandom, and I'm so glad every time we get new -prisoners- _cough_ _cough_ folks in our crew! Enjoy the ride.
Actually, this was the moment everybody started to fear because with one gay couple openly confirmed the probability of Stede and Ed being a queerbait rose significantly.
I love your reactions! I think you would love the show, What We Do In The Shadows, it is also a Taika Waititi project and I market it as the office but with vampires.😂 It has one of my favorite ships Nandermo and Kristen Schaal (Mabel’s voice actress) and Nick Kroll (the actor playing her Brother/Fiancé in this episode) are both in it as well!
"i gotta walk that one off" i feel like i have to and i've seen this episode like 10 times lol loving your reactions still. also same on the lounging character front, don't know what it is but. i get it
this is the most relatable reaction ever 😂
Your reactions continue to improve my ENTIRE day :D
Yes, there's something about the complete disregard for how furniture is meant to work, isn't there. Crowley does it too, and the parallels are not lost on me.
("Maybe I watched Labyrinth as a kid" ...I never made that connection, but yeah, the Goblin King also did That... huh. *stares into distance *)
The costumes are FABULOUS, and then we also have gems like Oluwande wearing actual crocs, he posted about it on twitter and it's such a delight.
10:56: I'm wondering if maybe you blinked and missed what Pete and Lucius were doing behind the counter earlier in the episode? 😂
The noises I made when I first saw the Moonlight Scene were audible only to dogs. DEEPLY unfair.
Looking forward to the next one!
I'm so glad that you're still loving this ❤😂 not that i had any doubt you would. When you finish this, you might want to sneak in a reaction to the season 2 teaser and/or trailer, they're both extremely bonkers and I'm biting my nails waiting for S2.
Also, I'm convinced that long silvery hair turns objectively handsome middle aged dudes into irresistible knockouts - case in point here and Henry Cavill in The Witcher.
doesn't even have to be long silver hair. Mads Mikkelsen has had metallic hair for ages and is just delicious, and Rupert Graves has like owned a tiny spread in my left ventricle since before Sherlock. silver foxes are just meant to be admired.
@@petrastedman669it's something about the length for me! But i agree with the general sentiment 🎉
@@victoriaj2129 agree. The long lush locks do hit different than the shorn silver.
I believe Stede's dinner jacket was hand painted silk and was very expensive by the yard
Absolutely perfect chaotic reaction!! Welcome to our brains 💜🌈🏴☠️
One of my favourite things about this show (other than it causing me to fall for Con O’Neill on a whole different level), was how the creator, David Jenkins, was honestly so *offended* at the thought of queerbaiting! He didn’t understand how pervasive it was until all of us were thanking him for not doing it. We get all the Queer relationships, & I expect even more for season two!
I live for these reactions bro 😭😭
MAKE MY LUNCH BREAK HAPPIER EVERY DAY I HAVE AN UPDATE FROM YOU!!!
Same!
ur reaction to this is pure gold
Another beautiful reaction 😂❤ yes, the romantic undertones (overtones? smothering mood? deluge of scenes?) was insane to watch, I remember seeing each episode push those two nutters closer and closer to each other in a meaningful, not superficial way and I couldn't believe what I was seeing 😂 plus of course the rest of the crew, also amazing. Get ready and brace for the best parts yet to come! ❤
It's Labyrinth, full stop.
😂😂😂 2:45 I had the same reaction. Taika being fine, I can't wrap my mind around it.
I laughed so hared at 10:43 , you getting a taste of Lucious overwhelimg Izzy with his gayness is just a recreation of the Kombucha girl meme! XD Also I watched as the show as it aired with my boyfirend and i was clawing at his leg and slapping his chest trying to suppress the rottengirl screams so we could still hear the show while he laughed at me. XD
yes, I'm stuck to the moon scene too and it's been 1 year and a half ago
LOVE THE TITLE 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The moonlight scene is iconic, that's the most beautiful, romantic shit ever! Holy shit! Stede being this prince and Ed with those big Disney princess eyes...
And OH YES we really have reached the point where Stede can dom Blackbeard with a few firm words.❤🔥
The pirate brainrot got you! WE GOT YOU! Welcome to our world!
And you're right, the costume department should get ALL THE AWARDS! They did an amazing job!
I'm in the UK, where it's shown on the BBC, and l had absolutely no idea that it was anything other than a comedy about pirates because that’s what it was sold as here as well. Only started watching because l tend to like quirky things and this premise was definitely that. Also, to be completely honest didn’t pick up on the BB/Stede romance thing till much later than l should have done - though, in my defence, l didn’t see any sort of info, except the trailer, before watching, so had 0 expectations about anything like that happening. And even without that l loved Stede and BB's relationship and how it developed, and then the romance aspect of things was a wonderful surprise.
I saw your reactions getting hyped on ofmdtwt (billed as someone who hadn't been interested in the show realizing they'd been wrong) and damn, I am not disappointed 🍿
Lounging casually is queer culture: isn't straight, can't sit up straight! Also I've lost track of how many times I've watched episode 5, and the moonlight scene still makes me mist up. Glad to see you onboard the ship of queer yearning.
Damn, that title hits home
Wee John was Hodor on _Game of Thrones._
I am giddy with anticipation to watch to the end of this season with you! ❤
I feel you. My unhealthy attraction to Taika as Ed and David Tennant as Crowley has made me question the sexual aspect of my identity ALOT in the past couple of years. Lol
05:10 - that's it, that's the show. Holy Sh!t....holy sh!t? Yes. That.
10:52 - honorable mention for accuracy
yeah we genuinely had NO IDEA
“maybe i just watched labyrinth” 😂😂
Your reactions are so relatable! I was the same watching it. I was expecting it to disappoint me and it kept gut punching me in unexpected ways. After this episode, I was well on my way to being fully unhinged about it.
Oh I watched ep 4 and 5 reactions together and simply wonderful! I am so glad that you are getting immersed in this show
OK, I take back what I said yesterday, you are not going to survive this show.
not you skipping the daddy scene!!
Just one thing I want to say after watching this reaction: same
great reaction I loved it!! Next episode begins with one of the most iconic scenes from the show, can't wait for you to watch it!! Thank you for the video ❤
Hiya, in the original scene with Lucious and Izzy they did film a version where they kissed instead of him just walking away, they just didn't use it. Just felt like you should know 👌
0:25 I guess that becomes a running theme in the next season as well 😂
I understand having the crisis about Taika Waititi like i now find him kinda hot after i finished the show XD but it's just mostly BlackBeard I like.
Love watching you getting into our cult. Welcome! I’m ace but hot for both Blackbeard and Rhys. 😂
Oh no, you skipped Izzy's "oooh, daddy" and Lucius' drawing of Fang. They're so good. 🥺
06:40 Funny you should say that. I saw someone in another video talking about how, for her, bisexuality is a culture, and it means, among other things, never knowing how to sit properly; I don't think Blackbeard's sexuality was made clear, but he could very well be bisexual. Case in point.
The not being able to sit "properly" in a chair is absolutely a thing. 100% and I will never believe otherwise. I'm biromantic, but until the asexual awakening a few years ago, identified as bisexual and identified (and still do) with the sitting thing so much.
Bi here, literally cannot sit straight, it's totally a thing 😅
We've officially lost Brittany y'all
i am so happy youre watching this right now, this show is my current obsession and i am absolutely here for your reactions
the way that lucius and pete scene must have been going over her head. only love for her.
Rewatching this it's wild you didn't notice Pete and lucious😅
I like that purple outfit.
I love your reactions!! XD
taika was always gender goals for me, but yeah, it was weird for me, too, being attracted to him as blackbeard. you get used to it, though.
Whatta great time! I had to pause and scream silently several times!!
He stepped in!!!!! ack
Aren't the costumes lovely, so gorg. the cast looks so grand in them. and yes, the bisexual lounging around
😆
Fun fact: When seamen would turn pirate, they were said to 'go on the account'
So Jeff the Accountant is not just fancy as fuck, but is a neat little historical nod
...
Here we go into the second half...I very much am looking forward to your reaction to the cold open on the next one...
It's heatin up, Ms Brit! 😎❤🔥
🤭ed just needs a soft dom
With so many POC on this show, it's super-important to note that Ed's mom is Māori and his dad is white, because there is a lot of discussion of racism in the interactions on this show. For example, the officer who says "a rich donkey is still a donkey" to talk about Ed is using a slur referring to his mixed-race heritage (all of these words: donkey = mule = mulatto -- have been used to refer to this), and it's why Ed shouts at him. And the thing is, this idea of Ed being violent... we've never seen Ed be violent. Angry, yes (with good reason!); violent, no. He hasn't committed an act of violence thus far in your viewing, has he? So the idea of "Stede can *rein Blackbeard in*" is kind of yikes.
This fandom has some huge pitfalls into "violent, brutish, out-of-control PoC Ed" and "calming influence (Stede/Izzy/choose a white guy)" and it's *ugly.* And there's still a faction that sees Ed as "white guy with a tan," rather than "of Māori descent."
While I agree with the importance of recognizing Ed's ethn¡city and upbringing as a mixed k¡d in a wh¡te society, some of the things you stated I find myself at an impasse with.
the donkey = mule = mulatto thing is kind of a reach. For starters, "Mulatto" is not a slur, at least not where I'm from. It's just an old fashioned way to refer to people who are mixed black and white.
Also, there isn't much evidence to support that "donkey" has ever been used as a r4cial slur. It's often used to mean "dumb/foolish", and it's more likely that Ed got angry because of _that_ implication.
As to whether Ed is violent or not, while he doesn't k¡ll people, I'd say that he _is_ violent to some degree, mainly because *he* *is* *a* *pirate.* It comes with the job. He screams threats to a restrained guy at kn¡fepoint, he teaches Stede how to raid a ship -in which there's several ma¡ming and d3aths. He "loves a good ma¡m". So yes, he _is_ a v¡olent man, but that has nothing to do with his r4ce. He is v¡olent because he _has_ _to_ _be_ to *survive.*
Meanwhile, Stede _is_ _actually_ more 'passive' at first, as he has no experience fighting or 4ssauIt¡ng people.
I agree that "Stede can *rein Blackbeard in*" is a bad sentence. What Stede does for Ed is show him that he doesn't have to _always_ be v¡olent, that he can also have softness and gentleness and general nice things in his life.
Btw: I know my English is not the best, and also, I had to c3nsor a lot of words to stop my comment from being automatically deleted.
@@amandac.d.4216 ""Mulatto" is not a slur, at least not where I'm from."" Super-cool for you! It's a big fat slur against "mixed-race" people here. You think Ed would get upset if someone called him "stupid?" yeah, sure, some dude calling him stupid would *definitely* cause him to get up and shout at him because Ed wouldn't laugh that shit off. Uh-huh. I don't know what show you're watching, but Ed doesn't just fly off the handle at anything.
It seems relatively clear it’s specifically taken as racist, as what he yells is “A donkey?! A fucking donkey?! Do you know where I'm from?!” It wouldn’t be particularly relevant that he was born in England if it wasn’t anti-indigenous racism.
It couldn't possibly be because it was a wealthy white person from a higher class than Ed, when we've been shown that Ed is of lower class, saying Ed is an *animal* with money. And comparing any person of color with a beast of burden is *never* problematic, right? Nice to live where you do I guess.
Stede doesn't "show" Ed that he doesn't always have to be violent - as I said in my previous comment, as of now, Ed *hasn't'* been violent!
I never said anything about Stede being passive, no idea why you brought that up. As for "violent because he's a pirate," okay then BASICALLY EVERY CHARACTER ON THE SHOW is violent. So that would mean *Ed isn't special in that regard,* and singling him out as violent must be for other reasons. Wonder what they could be?
Enjoy your whiteness.
@@jessicaross7288 Dude what? I'm not white. I'm a South American Mestiz@, from Chile, where EVERYONE is mixed race (we all have native/indigenous ancestry). Seems you got very heated up for no reason. I'm absolutely *NOT* denying the r4cism against Ed that's very clearly portraid in the show. It's clear, for example, during the Aristocratic party in episode 5, and also in the flashbacks to his upbringing. And since you're wondering about it, *nope,* it is *not* _nice,_ to live in Chile, where there's so much inequality that millions of people are homeless, indigenous people are 4bused and k¡lled on the regular by our very c0rrupt police, and just a few decades ago we _FINALLY_ got rid of the longest D¡ctatorsh¡p (17 years of ineffable t0rture, r4p3 and murd3rs ex3cuted by our lovely Militars) brought to us by the USA (thanks for the gift, Americans! 🥰) with the name "Operación C0ndor", an operation designed by the CIA to "stop c0mmunist expansion in the continent". Chile, where rich people live like royalty, while so many starve and don't even HAVE WATER TO DRINK. Yup, very nice living in here LOL.
Oh and I hope you excuse my bad redaction/English in general. Since I'm a latin@ from a th¡rd world country (in which it is _very_ nice to live, I tell ya!!), I only learned the English from School. I'm much better at speaking Mapudungun, though, but I doubt you even know what that is.
"Yes, hello, 999? Yes, I've just witnessed a murder by words" 😂😂😂
Look up Mel Gibson's leather outfit in The Road Warrior. Blackbeard is literally wearing the same outfit. 😄
