I named my dog, Corey. The following year, I brought a picture of her to Harry's concert. He laughed, said, "Well it's a dog's life," and autographed her picture. She is long gone now but I still have the picture and a wonderful memory of both of them.
He was a truly great man! I was privileged to meet and "hang" with him and the band one steamy hot Massachusetts evening. Prophetically, no one in the band wanted to ride back to New York with him...they teased him about being a lousy driver. That has lived with me ever since. Three years later...well you know what happened. RIP my friend!
I was born almost a decade after Harry passed. I grew up with his music in my parents' house, in my my parents' cars. Harry's voice was the soundtrack to my whole life. I miss him too.
Wisdom, Truth, Empathy and Compassion flowed like living water from the mouth and heart of this great storyteller and one of the most awesome mentors of my time.I loved every song he wrote, sang, and shared with us all! RIP I named my 38 year old daughter Corey....thank you dear Harry, you are still loved and listened to!
So many of his stories where mine. He sang to the world and Harry and his wife and family will always be in my heart even after Im laid to rest. I hope I have a Corey.
My parents named me Corrie after attending a concert of his in 1978. My Mom was very pregnant with me at the time. My Dad looked at her and said "Corrie's Coming." A very special song to me. RIP Mr. Chapin
Years ago, my brother and his soon to be wife, got stuck with two extra tickets to see Harry at Hamilton Place. They asked me if I would like to come along. I did not know much about Harry at that time but being a big music fan, I decided to go along. The show was fantastic and I really enjoyed it. At the end, he came out into the lobby, shaking hands and signing autographs. it was then, I became a huge fan and bought every vinyl album which I still have today. I owe my brother big time on this one. it was shocking shortly later though to find out he had passed away in an automobile accident. I thank my lucky stars for having the privelage of seeing this man play live. Thank you Harry. My favorite memories of you are this song and Mail Order Annie. Thanks again and I still play your music even still, to this day.
I remember sitting on River Street in Savannah, Georgia, waiting for the bars to close. I had a job cleaning up 3 bars after closing. I would sit there with a joint and I met Harry Chapin as he left the Nightflight Café. I told him about Vietnam, gave him the joint and got to talk to him length about what I saw in the world. A great man always.
I gotta say, I was born long after Harry passed away... but my Father used to listen to him all the time, and he introduced me to him. We both bonded over this man, and specifically this song. After he passed when I was only 15, all I had left to remember him by besides a couple baseball hats was this song... and even now, just hearing it can make me tear up years later, where I've finally realized who and what Corey is. Thank you, so much
Hope is a powerful thing. Stronger and more real than what most call reality. John Joseph lived his life knowing that he would see Corey one day. He never doubted it. Would that I could have that hope.
Oh bless you...I have so missed my old friend Harry. I guess it is true...you are never really gone as long as those who love you remember----oh wait---I hear Harry's coming!
Love Harry Chapin ! I saw him many years ago in Pennsylvania at the Paramount Theater, many know that place now as the KIRBY. I believe I was only around age 13 then and after 30 more years I STILL love his music !
At the Paramont theather Portland Oregon. Years later at the Civic. He was fonder of the Paramont( older more relaxed than the new Civic with more rules. Still wine and joints in the lobby most people in the lobby wore s u its and gowns. I was in jeans and a knit blouse. Times change.
This is also my favourite Chapin song. It always brings a tear to my eyes. It is now more than 30 years that I saw this man here in Bremen, Germany; exactly on 11th April 1977. One of the best and most memorable concerts of my life!
I sadly never got to see Harry in person infact he died a little bit less then 4 years before I was born. However as the soon of a "old folkie" I was exposed to his music from a young age. He is indeed oneo f my fav folk singers a title he shares with Tom Russell. This happens to be my 2nd fav song (my first being What Made America Famous). I admit to being a hopeless romantic and I have always liked to believe that Cory was real. The beauty of Cory is she is real in our minds. RIP Harry
I am in my 60"s and am so glad I got to see Harry several times over the years. He is up there with Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger as far as being creative writers. But his songs seem to touch the heart so much deeper. Even now his songs bring back so many great memories. A few years ago I saw the Chapin Family and Friends" tribute concert to him. I believed in spirits that night as Harry was enjoying his music with us. He was a great human being.
I saw Harry live in Miami, somewhere around 1980. Harry had a gift, he had the ability of pulling you into the song.Truly the best concert i'd ever been to. He played and sang for over 2 hrs. and when he left the stage, a thousand Bic lighters lit, and Harry would do an encore, I think he did 4 or 5 encores that night. A horrible loss for us, sometimes life just doesn't seem fair.
I'm so glad I can visit Harry here on UA-cam. I'm grateful to everyone who has posted videos of him. I think my favorite song is "Mail Order Annie," but this is a close second.
Gail ... we think alike! Mail Order Annie and Corey's Coming are my two favorite Harry Chapin songs as well. I am grateful every day that UA-cam is here for us to relive old memories.
The greatest storyteller that ever lived, and an awesome performer. He truly thankful to his fans, many of whom took a couple of hours out of their lives to spend it at one of his concerts. Little did Harry know, it was his multitude of fans who appreciated the fact that he would take a couple of hours out of his life to perform just for them.
Saw him perform in Dublin, Ireland, many years ago. A great night. Loved this song, just because of it's narrative, it's story. I turned to my girlfriend and said " If I had a daughter, I'd call her Cory." And 33 years later my youngest daughter is called Cory. My Girlfriend is still my wife, and my daughter is one kick-ass kid.
Today is my daughter, Corey's 26th birthday! She was named after this Corey. Harry just knew how to connect with people through his stories, music and presence. And yep @higehh I cried today when I listened to it again! First time I saw him some kid named Billy Joel opened for him. :)
Best version of this great song, thank you so much for posting it! I still cry when I sing along and get to the "My name is Corey" part. Kills me every time. So, thanks for the good cry! :-)
i was privliged to see harry chapin about a month before his death. but even before that when i 1st heard this song i said that if i ever have a daughter she will be named corey & in 84 we did & she was.& shes the best thing in my life
Damn, I miss Harry! I was fortunate to see him a number of times and he always made me feel like we were close friends. I took it for granted that he would be around and continue telling stories that spoke to me and for me but it was not to be. I lost my voice the day he died. Rest in peace dear friend; you earned it!
everyone takes away there own meaning from Harry's songs ... a fan since I can remember, lucky enough to have seen him perform live several times starting at age six (my parents allowed us to hang after the show - I got a kiss as well as an autograph - I thought all performers did this!) - this song has always been a beautiful happy song - "...no more sad stories coming!" A love for the ages.
Nobody told stories like Harry and no summer was complete without seeing him at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. Corey, Mr. Tanner, Better Place to Be, and the list goes on. I saw him get an honorary degree at CW Post. That was the last time. His music brings me joy and sadness.
My name is rod. I was named after this song too... kidding. What a great story teller. I love this guy. Sad that him and Jim Croce both tragically passed away at such a young age. To think of what else they would have brought us. Thank you so much for the music.
I met a beautiful lady at the state forest named Corey,I told her about this song. She glowed and said she was named for this song!! We sang it together, great time...R.I.P. Harry keep the change. Skippityy skippitty
Harry will always be working one room or another.. if he's not singing for WHY then he's telling anybody and everybody about the need (not the org..) as evidenced by The Boss...
Ronan FitzGerald more than once I saw him sign autographs on the concourse after a concert for a dollar apiece until there were no more dollars left , all of which went to " the other guy " .
The Chapin family are still doing shows that keep this music alive. The shows usually consist of Tom, Steve, Big John Wallace and the children of Tom, Harry and Steve. The shows are awesome. You can find the schedule at Tom Chapin's web site.
What a great version to have on video. Alternate lyrics! That's great! Now it's the boys turn to become the old man by the railroad telling stories. The story of Corey lives on through the boy like it lives on through all of us (the fans). Thanks for posting
@carsonsheir You're right... I started out thinking she was real, but as the glory of Harry's songs go, sometimes when I listened I was swayed back and forth between the two prospects, real or imaginary, then combined em into real in his imagination... In a way I'm glad he left it a mystery...
What a touching and poignant song that touches you deeply in your soul! I always loved Harry's live performances, and he would have you laughing like the dickens at his concerts! Peace and Love, BobbyK
i regret that I never saw Harry in concert, had a ticket to see him in August 1981 a ticket that went unused it sits in a scrap book unused and never turned in for a refund it was better that way. wish it could have been used it Harry and his interaction with the crowd was the best.
@myangell02 The beauty of the song is that she is whatever you want her to be. I always like to think that she was real, however I am a hopeless romantic.

That's really takin it somewhere, but an interesting idea. My take on it, was that the ol' guy at the train station really did have a lady out there, and some fond memories, and ya don't have to be young, rich and wealthy to get the lady n the love. Another lesson.....
@snowstormsii I can see why you would think that, but I think Corey is a beautiful spirit that brought joy and comfort to a lonely man. She must have been wonderful, because the young man is so enamoured by her that he takes John Joseph's place. I think it is a beautiful song of someone who is less lonely because of Corey.
My granddaughter is being introduced to Harry. Favorites are "the banana song" (self evident), the "singing bear" song (Mr. Tanner), and "Dancing Boy" - which I swear I've seen a video of him playing it live as Josh dances next to him but I can't find it. Trying to work this one into the mix.
How funny...after reading all these comments now I understand why Corey didn't end up being such a unique name. I really thought it was going to be unique. Harry Chapin touched our souls and we all named our children , male or female after him! LOL
Thank you so much 'bearznorthCATHY' for putting these up on youtube. I saw Harry in concert in Ireland in 1979 - it was a very memorable experience. Why were most of his songs so sad? Was he mentally ill?
With all the hoopla about Michael Jackson we tend to forget the real people who mattered. Harry cared about things that mattered. He truly was one great human being.
The way he told stories, no one could ever compare. There's as real in2023 as they were in 1977.
Almost fifty years latter and his music still brings tears to my eyes. Best storyteller ever.
It was years before I could listen to Circles without crying.
I named my dog, Corey. The following year, I brought a picture of her to Harry's concert. He laughed, said, "Well it's a dog's life," and autographed her picture. She is long gone now but I still have the picture and a wonderful memory of both of them.
I named my dog Chapin!
Harry would come to Hamilton Ontario every January.
Loved the man, cried like a baby when he died.
Yes
He was a truly great man! I was privileged to meet and "hang" with him and the band one steamy hot Massachusetts evening. Prophetically, no one in the band wanted to ride back to New York with him...they teased him about being a lousy driver. That has lived with me ever since. Three years later...well you know what happened. RIP my friend!
The song is a masterpiece...what a talented person he was...
One of the best balladeers of my youth. His stories still move me and I miss him. Thank you for letting me see him again.
I was born almost a decade after Harry passed.
I grew up with his music in my parents' house, in my my parents' cars. Harry's voice was the soundtrack to my whole life.
I miss him too.

This has always been one of my favorite Harry Chapin stories. He had the gift of making you believe the characters were real.
My parents named me Corrie after attending a concert of his in 1978. My Mom was very pregnant with me at the time. My Dad looked at her and said "Corrie's Coming." A very special song to me. RIP Mr. Chapin

Corey is the girl we all wanted to meet.......and some did!
see you Harry.
I'll definitely be naming my first daughter Corey. I just hope my wife understands.
Thank you Harry; your music is beautiful.
I'm 45 and still looking for my Corey. And Harry's song gives me hope that she's out there....somewhere.
Thanks Harry!
Great song. I named my SON Core because of this song. He never realized that the song was about a girl!
The brief momments with one person can become can become a big heart.
I gotta say, I was born long after Harry passed away... but my Father used to listen to him all the time, and he introduced me to him. We both bonded over this man, and specifically this song. The only thing I dislike about Harry Chapin is that he's no longer here.
Great man and entertainer. I have missed him all these years. Thanks Harry.
Roz and I were lucky enough to see him in City Hall Newcastle in 81? Wonderful and unforgettable evening.!!
Hope is a powerful thing. Stronger and more real than what most call reality. John Joseph lived his life knowing that he would see Corey one day. He never doubted it. Would that I could have that hope.
My father is a singer and we have our annual harry chapin night this month where we sing his songs. I wish I had a chance to see him in concert!
One of my very favorite songs. He writes the most incredible lyrics. Each song a story.
Oh bless you...I have so missed my old friend Harry. I guess it is true...you are never really gone as long as those who love you remember----oh wait---I hear Harry's coming!

Harry is the most incredible artist - breathtaking

Harry was this country's best story teller. Period.

I was named for this song! I love it so much... it makes me think of my parents!
Thank you for poting this!
One o My Fav's Fer Sure'.....My Corie's Coming.
This still brings back wonderful memories, a smile, and a tear. I still miss you Harry.
Best version of this great song, thank you so much for posting it! I still cry when I sing along and get to the "My name is Corey" part. Kills me every time. So, thanks for the good cry! :-)
you DAMN right he is,,he is in the stratosphere of top storytellers
We need story tellers like Harry now. 30 years from now, who will know what music was being produced in our time?
A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song!
My favorite version of my favorite song by Harry. Miss this man.
i was privliged to see harry chapin about a month before his death. but even before that when i 1st heard this song i said that if i ever have a daughter she will be named corey & in 84 we did & she was.& shes the best thing in my life

if there is a heaven , God is busy putting dollars in the hat for the less fortunate or Harry is working the other room . Great music , better man .

its funny..i listen to harry s songs at different times in my life...and i always get a different message ..a personal one..you know..amazing man
me to. i just discovered him a year after he died. such a great song writer
The Chapin family are still doing shows that keep this music alive. The shows usually consist of Tom, Steve, Big John Wallace and the children of Tom, Harry and Steve. The shows are awesome. You can find the schedule at Tom Chapin's web site.
Harry had so many great stories... This is one of his best... Thank you... Thank you Thank You for posting these...

Hey, named me son Corey, would have been Corey male or female. Loved Harry for all he has done for all of us and will live forever with his songs!
PURE MAGIC!
What a touching and poignant song that touches you deeply in your soul! I always loved Harry's live performances, and he would have you laughing like the dickens at his concerts! Peace and Love, BobbyK
Thank you so much for posting the extened version!! I dont know wha happend to my last comment, tho.
Wow...what an epic. Brought back some memories indeed. Thanks alot for uploading it.
i regret that I never saw Harry in concert, had a ticket to see him in August 1981 a ticket that went unused it sits in a scrap book unused and never turned in for a refund it was better that way. wish it could have been used it Harry and his interaction with the crowd was the best.
thanks for sharing that wonderful story
Like he told me, when she holds me, she enfolds me in her world.
Also never heard this set of lyrics. Thanks again!
Gosh miss you Harry!
im called Corey YAAAAAAAAY
@myangell02 The beauty of the song is that she is whatever you want her to be. I always like to think that she was real, however I am a hopeless romantic.
Check out "The Gold Medal Collection". It is now one of my prized possessions. It is a 2 disc set, and has a lot of great stuff on it.
I was born in 93 but grew up hearing this song a lot... never realized Mr. Chapin had passed on quite a few years before I was even born. This has also been one of my favorite songs... so what's the verdict on who Corey is? An angel perhaps?
Reality is just a word. Just like in the song
Yes, Harry was indeed an incredible storyteller!! If you have not heard "Stranger with the melodies", do yourself a favour and give it a good listen. Another of Mr. Chapin's lesser known songs, but so beautifully written.....like all of his creations. Steve, in Canada (eh!?)
Harrys greatest contribution was to his most of his concerts benefited the charity World Hunger Year. He sang for charity before it was the popular thing to do. I wonder what he would think about us and the state of the world today if he was still with us. We miss his work and his talent.
I love this!
i saw harry about a month before he died..i named my daughter Corrie ( spelled diff ) after this song...R.I.P.HARRY LOVE YA..FROM THE CHEAP SEATS
I've never heard this version (and I thought I'd heard them all). Its almost like you were there.
I saw Harry in Binghamton, sometime around 1980. He was late. Late late. Missed a flight I think. We wondered how he'd make it. I heard he drove. His brother and the band filled in for what was around 3 hours. When he arrived as he settled onto his stool he said to the crowd, "I'm going to play my ass off for you tonight!" And then he did..
One of his best songs. I think "On the Road to Kingdom Come" is an awesome album. To bad more people know about it.
how can you dislike this? just don't watch it
Great video, thanks.
No, not mentally Ill...probably more tuned in to the emotions of life, and was able to put them to words we could all relate to. He had many happy songs, but we tended to relate more to the sad ones, cos those moments in our lives seem easier to make a permanent dent in our souls. Harry just found them for us...and released our pain...
Harry always did this live so much better than the studio version. The studio version is overproduced and doesn't have the background vocal harmony. It adds so much to this song.
Listen closely to the song again. Corey is a metaphor for death. (Corey - Corpus - Corpse) The song is about death but instead of death being something to fear, it is presented as something beautiful. Death is a beautiful woman.
That's really takin it somewhere, but an interesting idea. My take on it, was that the ol' guy at the train station really did have a lady out there, and some fond memories, and ya don't have to be young, rich and wealthy to get the lady n the love. Another lesson.....
that is a really cool story, nice to be named from such a great song
@snowstormsii I can see why you would think that, but I think Corey is a beautiful spirit that brought joy and comfort to a lonely man. She must have been wonderful, because the young man is so enamoured by her that he takes John Joseph's place. I think it is a beautiful song of someone who is less lonely because of Corey.
I love this version although I wish Harry had been in better voice that day. I had tickets to see him when he passed and I still miss him.
A lot of kids were named Corey after this song. I named by son Corey in 1991 after Harrys song.
this world could sure use a improv Harry concert
My granddaughter is being introduced to Harry. Favorites are "the banana song" (self evident), the "singing bear" song (Mr. Tanner), and "Dancing Boy" - which I swear I've seen a video of him playing it live as Josh dances next to him but I can't find it. Trying to work this one into the mix.
I second that
My coach is Kory Chapin, the cousin of Harry. This song was wrote for him, not the person below me.
This is a completely different song than what I know. But it's still awesome!
me, too!
That's my name too...spelled the same way too!
Mine too!
Not so sad most talk of a time a place in ones life..even the momment when there is just you or just you and the world.
i bet shes a great daughter our daughters is really spelt corrie ty 4 the comment
With all the hoopla about Michael Jackson we tend to forget the real people who mattered. Harry cared about things that mattered. He truly was one great human being.
