I just discovered this guy two days ago. He's so weird and I love it! "Whisk whisk whisk. Aaaaahhhh-mazing!" Adorbs! He has me actually going to attempt to make a complicated cake. His lemon recipe with lemon cream cheese frosting custard (or is it pastry cream?) and lemon curd in the middle! I have never made any of those things because I was always too scared, but he has given me the courage!
i am from Azerbaijan and we always eat watermelon with salty white local cheese and sometimes lavash bread (flatbread). This salad speaks to me. I will definitely try it
I can't wait to make this. Here's two others I've had. 1. Watermelon, feta, fresh mint dressed in rose water. 2. Watermelon, red onion, fresh basil, little balls of mozzarella dressed in Italian vinaigrette. I love summer produce!
Its funny how I literally just was thinking about a big mistake i made when i used an American recipe for the first time. When we talk about a teaspoon over here we talk about a spoon you use in a tea cup. A table spoon is a spoon you eat soup with, a cup is a drinking cup etc, so i followed the recipe using the wrong way to measure stuff making the cake i made really weird. It did cause me to discover a “new” kind of frosting that I perfected over the years and its now my secret frosting everyone loves😂 sweet, slightly sour, creamy and buttery, it got it all
I lived in Greece for a couple months and there was this truck that'd roll down the street slowly with a man shouting over a megaphone "karpouzi, karpouzi, karpouzi." First time it happened it freaked me out cuz it was a large truck and the guy sounded quite angry, I thought it was some sorta political thing. Turns out it was just a guy selling watermelon, and wow they were the best watermelons I'd ever had. So in my mind at least, Greece is definitely a watermelon country
My mom went there 30 years ago and the same thing happened to her and she thought it was a political thing that they were taking over the country lol 😂 but they do have the best watermelons and the food is amazing!
I started making this salad a couple years ago using this recipe - everyone absolutely loves it! I also add some blueberries to the salad and I make the Lime Dressing and keep it separate and let eaters drizzle on their salads to their tastes - lasts longer that way. If you are serving the entire batch at once - then pour on the dressing over the entire salad - I usually make a batch and eat off of it for several days and having the dressing already in the salad gets it too mushy after a day or two. Love it!
If I could find a watermelon this time of the year (winter in South Africa) I would make TONS of this! You can also use the skin to make a preserve- great with icecream or freshly baked bread....😊😊 waste not want not
Great recipe. I did however add 1/2 a clove minced garlic to the lime dressing. and I added some Tajin to the whole salad and tossed all together. So delicious! Thank you for this recipe.
In Palestine, we eat watermelon with goat cheese, like Nabulsi and Ackawi, and homemade flatbread (Kmaj) or Taboon bread. I love it. Sooo delicious 😋 I also love to eat mint with watermelon and cheese. So, your recipe is on my very-soon to-do-list 😉 Thank you!
This looks SO good! Tip to cut your watermelon: 1- quarter your melon, 2- slice lengthwise and crosswise until you hit the rind (not through the rind) 3- Then you a spoon or knife and just go along the rind. 4- Your cubes of melon will fall right into your bowl! This works great for cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon etc.
This salad is very common among the Mediterranean nations along with the Middle East and the Caucus region, very refreshing and of course you can zest the lime for more free flavor, aromatize the dressing further. Yes it's also great with many flatbreads such as the lavash or the many that are made in a tandoor oven. I get that California and the West are going through heatwaves, drought and forest fires and the East is as cool as post Labour Day. That's man induced climate change and global warming.
A helpful tip Soak the chopped red onions in the lime juice first for a few minutes before adding it to the salad then drizzle the olive oil at the end.. the lime juice will cut out the spiciness of the onions that most people dislike.. I also luv adding black olives and parsley to this salad
I don’t know if you like spicy food much BUT you should try a watermelon 🍉salad but with lime 🍈and chilli 🌶dressing! Asian style! It’s mega addictive and once you’ve had it you will never forget how amazing it is! Had it once in a restaurant and have been recreating it ever since. I don’t think I’ve ever had watermelon and feta salad so i promise to try this if you’ll try the chilli one! Loving your work John, got hooked a fair few years ago when I happened upon a video where you spoke about the Wilton cake belts!!!
i am no chef thats for sure, but its just me and mum here and its way hot out so i wanted to make her something cold and refreshing and this did not disappoint. we both loved this and i got to look like i knew what i was doing. thank you for this video.
That looks *SCRUMPTIOUS* I'm salivating... I never would've thought to make a salad out of a watermelon, but here we are! Cut to me driving to Kroger to pick one up. Thanks John!!!
Haha I’ve been making this salad a lot this summer. I use kale as a base and don’t put the onion but everything else is the same. It’s so refreshing and delicious!
If you’re not serving right away, should I put chopped watermelon in colander until I mix salad together just before serving? It seems very watery. Beautiful salad. Thank you. Love your channel.
Made it, everyone liked it 👍🏻 I actually measured 3 Tbs of lime juice though (1 lime was about 1 1/2 Tbs) and it was a tad strong. Half that or 1 lime would have been plenty enough for the amount. Not a huge fan of the red onions, either. They were fine, but personally, I would replace the with chopped Pistachios or something, next time. Both salty and sweet nut morsels would have worked really well with this salad.
Made this for a birthday dinner last night. It was a big hit and tasted nice. Two things I did differently, and I think this is really important: soak the red onion in cold water for ten minutes before adding it to the salad. If you don't, the allicin from the onions will take over everything. Soaking the onion will take away the power of the onion. I also zested the limes for the dressing. It gives more flavour to the salad. It is imperative you make this and serve it immediately. Mint doesn't hold well once cut or torn. And the salad will "dry out" if you wait. It was a hit and I made it à la minute, so YYMV with my suggestions.
Thank you for the idea. I just made watermelon wine, and pickled watermelon rind, but I was looking for something I could do with just the meat. I may try this.
@@PreppyKitchen tomorrow my mom said we are going grocery shopping so I can find your macaroon ingredients and make some… Took a lot of begging but I hope it’s worth it
Though this salad has Greek roots, it's my goto salad when fixing Indian curries and dals. To me the sweet coolness goes well with spicy foods. It's much like some if the ritas they make.
I really like the way u talk. Your energy is so positive and amazing ❤. I was very upset and anxious today. I love watermelon and this recipe and the person making this recipe uplifted my mood😊. Thank you.
“Not a Watermelon and garlic salad” I felt that in my soul I hate !!! When someone use’s my cutting board and they don’t thoroughly clean it 🙄 I’m gonna try this recipe❤
In Greece we often eat Watermelon with feta cheese and nowadays you see a lot of Greek salads with watermelon as well.🍉💗😋
Interesting!
In Palestine they do that too😍😍
And in Armenia, watermelon/feta cheese/lavash
@@Amelia-xc9gw yes

Yes to the addition of lavash!
Hi compaitorit... I really know what you are talking about. this salad is similar to our local meal... Difinietly delicious (∩_∩)
Feta cheese and water melon brought up generations of Greeks. When you come to Greece you have to try a barrel matured feta with water melon!
YES!!!!! The cheese in Greece is SO amazing and not just feta!
Ok but that watermelon looks absolutely incredible! So red and delicious!

Watermelon (Karpouzi) is, in fact, quite popular in Greece.
