I first heard (read) about them in the "New Faces" column of Rolling Stone magazine. It was them and Counting Crows. A few weeks later I was at a Wal-Mart in Johnson City, TN and both bands debut albums were stacked directly on top of another. That $6.99 price tag is what I bought the cassette tape for. It took some growing on me, especially after such a killer debut. It took re-visiting some songs like "Vulgar Before Me" and "Become (To Tell)" to really begin to enjoy and appreciate it.
It's ridiculous that bands have to have some sort of genre label or have another band to compare themselves to in order to be taken seriously. I love Candlebox!
Its cool that Candlebox is still around making music and all but man, Peter Klett was and is a hugely underrated guitar player and without him its just not the same.
The video has me thinking the same thing as you. It is ironic that a band from Seattle isn't legitimate because they play traditional rock music, which clashes with the nonconforming image that Grung has in the early to mid '90s.
@@nuke97 YUP,they were at the very least worth about mill each, that album went quadruple platinum and that doesnt even include the year and a half of touring and some of it was their own headlining tour and merchandise, which was much bigger back then,ESPESIALLY t-shirts,would bet anything that they at least made a million dollars from that debut!!doesnt necessarily mean they still are millionaires, but they probably were for a bit anyway

I saw them in Nov of 1994 and I thought they were pretty damn good for their first few headlining shows and that debut record was great from top to bottom and imo they did not sound like grunge, their music had more of a straight rock n roll edge to it and obviously their was lots of jealousy because they made it pretty quickly and I actually remember hearing a lot of BS back then, but I still rock that record from time to time and their nxt 2 were not great but they are decent,I figured they were gonna be a big band for a long time and I guess I was wrong, too bad they couldnt build off of their debut, maybe it was a little too fast for them!?
I seen them in 95, the only band I can honestly say sounded like their album. Great band. Their road crew and sound setup were making mistakes and they kept it together. Saw them 20yrs later still just as tight. Kevin's vocals... spot on! I'll stick up for them anytime!
Candlebox is and will always be my favorite band, they are criminally underrated and overlooked. All I can say is I’m very thankful and happy they are around and continue to make music
I was at the Portland meadows in Oregon when at last minute they announced Alice In Chains was not going to play, so Candlebox came and took the stage. I was a kid then so I didn’t care so much but afterwards my dad bought me the candlebox CD and had it on repeat. Good times🙏🏻 oh and suicidal tendencies were the openers
The sun was very unforgiving that day and so was I. That was the one and only time for held today to AIC . No disrespect to CB as they were awash great in the 4-5 times I saw them.
I played a bunch of shows with them back in 1998-1999 (my band opened for them)... They were AMAZING live, and I saw them a few years back, and STILL sounded great (Kevin still had the vocal chops). These guys got a lot of heat over nothing.

The critic. who said, "They don't know whether they're Soundgarden, Extreme, or Led Zeppelin" must have been the same critic that started the "Stone Temple Pilots was a Pearl Jam ripoff" bullshit. And just like the latter making zero sense, Candlebox in no way, sounds like any of those three bands. Not even close. Good thing critics opinions don't matter.
That's kind of a good thing, what he said, even tho he meant it as a negative. It means that have their own groove. They're not trying to be anyone else!
We loved Candlebox as much as the other bands. They were playing at our parties,in our cars and on our radios right along with the others. To us, they fit right in. There was great music in rock and hip hop at the time. Being a teen in the 90's was magical.

So true, it's so beautifully melodic and soars without being shreddy or too pretentious. You can absolutely tell he has major chops though. I feel the same about Spin Doctors and the solo in "Two Princes" - both epic 90s solos when guitar rock was still king.
I saw them open for Metallica after seeing them at a club a year or so before. They had the same energy and were great live. Kevin sure loves to use the word Fuck as often as possible. But he backs it up with one helluva set of lungs and real emotion in every song.

I saw them when they opened for Rush on their Counterpart tour. Candlebox was great and I bought their first album right after the concert. I love that album.
I moved to Seattle in April 1994. The city had no love for those guys. After they broke up, I saw Bardi Martin's bass amps for sale at Bass Northwest. His name was still on the cabinets. He had gone on to attend the University of Washington law school.

I lived in Tacoma in the mid to late 90’s and worked at a record store so was on the periphery of the Puget Sound music scene. The casual fans liked Candlebox, but the hard core music snobs and pros HATED them.
Cannot turn my radio off fast enough when Far Behind comes on. Radio ran that one into the ground. Killer song by them is Can't Give In on the Airheads soundtrack.
I just seen them in concert about 2 yrs ago. Sounded awesome. Now, at one point during the show the singer did sound a tad jaded. I think he was sorta joking, but still had a hint of contempt behind it. He said something about how they have more than 2 songs and have released so many more albums since 94-95.
It’s so funny how they were “accused” of trying to steal the Seattle sound...they had so much more blues influence (at least on their first record) than the local “grunge” bands of the time... Show me one Candlebox song that sounded like Soundgarden, Nirvana, AIC or Pearl Jam...I dare you (at least from the first two albums - sort lost touch after that 🤣)... Always felt like Peter Klett had his own thing for the era...
First of all, I am and always will be a huge Candlebox fan. Kevin Martin has such a beautiful and soulful voice and the music has an intensity and inuendo that is so satisfying!! I drive for a living and this band has been there right beside me for thousands and thousands of miles! I listen to a lot of music but always put my Candlebox CD - yes, a CD! back in again over and over! I just want to say that all the fuss about this band early on about not knowing who they are and "riding" the coattails of other bands is ridiculous! What other band do you know has to define who they are as compared to other bands? They are a rock band. Period. They make good music. That should be enough. Just because they came out at a time and in a city who defined themselves as grunge doesn't mean they had to be boxed in to that genre. I always thought they were so underrated. What a shame they were outcast before they could even make it big. I salute you CANDLEBOX!! Please keep making the music, especially like your early stuff- my favorite! And please come to Portland, Oregon again soon!
The hate for CB has never made any sense to me. Musicians themselves can be some of the worst haters. Ironically I never liked any of the other Seattle bands of the time as much as I liked CB.

Candlebox kicks ass. Grew up with their first 3 albums. I saw them at House of Blues Anaheim around 2006 and they absolutely killed it. They'll never get the respect they deserve, but that's ok. I think I'll listen to them now!!!
That's such a great place to see bands at. Caught Tesla and the cult there
Both great shows
@@diviningrod2671 Nice!!!
😎
Lucy is such an underrated album. Go listen!
Will do.
I was blown away by their first cd, their second cd ended up in my trash can the next day after I bought it
So is happy pills
It took some growing on me, especially after such a killer debut. It took re-visiting some songs like "Vulgar Before Me" and "Become (To Tell)" to really begin to enjoy and appreciate it.
@@jessesarmiento1433 "Sometimes" = one of the best songs
It's ridiculous that bands have to have some sort of genre label or have another band to compare themselves to in order to be taken seriously. I love Candlebox!
Far Behind was the first song i ever learned on guitar.
Love it
I love turtles
You’re 42
Cats in the cradle.....clearly you had a better Dad. Lol
Absolutely awesome song.
Its cool that Candlebox is still around making music and all but man, Peter Klett was and is a hugely underrated guitar player and without him its just not the same.
Klett has fantastic tone and phrasing. Monster player.
Honestly, they got done dirty. People just hating on them for petty reasons.
The video has me thinking the same thing as you. It is ironic that a band from Seattle isn't legitimate because they play traditional rock music, which clashes with the nonconforming image that Grung has in the early to mid '90s.
@Luke snorting coke and banging chicks sure but millionaires? Nope.
Criminally underrated
@Luke prove it
@@nuke97 YUP,they were at the very least worth about mill each, that album went quadruple platinum and that doesnt even include the year and a half of touring and some of it was their own headlining tour and merchandise, which was much bigger back then,ESPESIALLY t-shirts,would bet anything that they at least made a million dollars from that debut!!doesnt necessarily mean they still are millionaires, but they probably were for a bit anyway
Saw them in 94 and they killed it, had a great time. They closed with a Journey cover and it was fun as hell.
Saw them in 94 in New Haven CT. With the Flaming Lips. Saw them in 08 in Omaha NE. They donated proceeds and tributed concert to BoyScouts who were killed that day in tornado in Nebraska. They opened the College World Series that day. HEART BREAKING
I don’t care what people think about them, they did their music and I think it rocked. 🤘🏻
“Change” is still a fucking banger.
Change was a killer tune. So was You.
What about Far Behind?
“Blossom” is my jam!
Change is probably my favorite Candlebox song. I remember when they played it live, we all screamed with the chorus as it kicked in. Awesome song!!
A much overlooked great from that album...
"mom just get me a pepsi,
please! All i want is a pepsi!
and she wouldnt give it to me. Just a pepsi!"
Always makes me think of the scene in Eastbound and Down at Shane's funeral.
Yes, the first comment I read
Such an underrated show. Hilarious.
Classic!
It gets even better when he starts playing Pearl Jam's "Alive"
One of funniest scenes in the series
I never thought of Candlebox has a grunge band if they're from Seattle or not
The heart of grunge is a sludge metal punk sound.
I referred to them in the 1990's as "clean grunge."
They are a rock band. You people and ur sub- genres
They watered down the grudge sound somehow
Well it sure beats raising cattle
I played a bunch of shows with them back in 1998-1999 (my band opened for them)... They were AMAZING live, and I saw them a few years back, and STILL sounded great (Kevin still had the vocal chops). These guys got a lot of heat over nothing.
Was your band signed to a label?
@@driven9863 Sadly never, a development deal with one label, and fortunately for us, we had a phenomenal management firm and entertainment lawyer who had a lot of connections in the Southeast US that got us onto a lot of radio festivals and opening spots, but we never got that gold ring. I've had a phenomenal career in music, global touring, and even now still playing and developing new material, so I still enjoy this industry (not so much at the moment because of the Co-Co, but you get it)
@@rayanthonyrobles5162 Yeah, there are so many variables getting sign to label. The only thing that matters you had fun, playing out.
"You" is my favorite Candlebox song.
You do You
They sounded like no other " grunge" band ...at all. Stupid to pigeon hole them as "riding coatails"... great band, great guys, great musicians...
nope, they werent a grunge band.. more like colledge schlock rock
right up there with Soul Assylum, Hootie and the blowfish, The watchmen, The verve pipe and Toad and the wet sprocket.. in laymans terms... forgettable. Not even worth a video on here...
Saw Candlebox three times and each time they brought it. They were sensational. Met Peter Klett after a concert and he was so down to Earth, even buying my wife and I a drink. He also gave us a dozen of his guitar picks. Such a great guy and they were a great band. We still love them.
I was never a dedicated fan of them, but their singles were great and memorable. Also, I saw them open for Rush on the Counterparts tour and they gave an excellent performance. Respect!
As soon as they came out I was in love with their music....
I have their first album in my car right now!!!! And have never thought that they were stealing from the Seattle sounds!!!! I love every single song that they’ve done!!!!!!!!!?? And I think that he has the best voice in this genre!!!!!!? And their songs radiate with me and a lot of people who enjoy their music!!!!!!? Just saying y’all!!! God bless you all today Shalom
I liked them a lot, far behind is a great song. I always thought they were more rock n roll than grunge.
Thats what's great about candlebox, they have some grunge influence but it's really just great rock that's timeless
Their music is timeless, I will never get tired of hearing that whole album
Don't know how anyone could say CANDLEBOX was not a GREAT Band. 😕
Saw them in the 90's in Tucson AZ they were outstanding.
Saw them in Ft Myers FL in 2019 and they were still GREAT
Kevin Martin is a Stellar singer & frontman. They were definitely UNDERRATED like so many bands in that genre. ANOTHER great band from Seattle 🔥🔥
The critic. who said, "They don't know whether they're Soundgarden, Extreme, or Led Zeppelin" must have been the same critic that started the "Stone Temple Pilots was a Pearl Jam ripoff" bullshit. And just like the latter making zero sense, Candlebox in no way, sounds like any of those three bands. Not even close. Good thing critics opinions don't matter.
Music critics are the fucking worst!
Being a teen in the 90's was magical.
one of my favorite bands and singers. the guy can sing anything.
God, I grew up in SLC UT , Texas born Las Vegas,Nevada SLC,Utah raised from the 70s to 2002,now I'm retired and I live in Mexico ,and in Utah I had the privilege to have hanged out with bands like candlebox, Alice in Chains , Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, NIN, ETC ETC the Seattle scene bands plus the thrash, punk , death ,thrash metal scene and we hardly took pics or videos or the sh*t we all used to get from all them bands , we traded guitars ,drums, cymbals ,basses ,amps etc etc ..... f*ck ,I don't regreted to have taken any pics or kept some guitars etc etc I'm actually fkn lucky to have hanged out with all them bands and lots of them staying at our lousy apartments !! 😚💨💨 I fkn miss SLC we had our own cbgs at the speedway cafe !!under the freeway !! 🤘🤘
I scored a big girl at a candlebox summerfest show in 94.
Good times.

Notorious Bi-G girls???
I saw them in March 1994 when they opened for Rush. Was blown away by them. Sounded great live and had the crowd very involved. Immediately went out and bought their debut CD and shortly after. I still listen to them today.
Speeding down a country road, with the top down in the summer wind, Far Behind blasted to 11 is fond memory of being a teen in the 90s.
They are on their 30th anniversary tour, and the last . I have been along for the ride the entire time. Kevin's voice is as strong as it was 30 yrs ago. for me it feels like the end of an era.
Been to 26 Candlebox concerts and two kevin martin and the Hi Watts
Never a weak show ever
Best lineup
Kevin Martin
Peter Klett
Adam Kurry
Scott Mercado
*Memphis Hennessey
First show they opened for Metallica in place of Alice in chains
Most recent show I went to about 2 years ago in Dallas house of blues
Kick ass live shows always
To quote Kevin......
"Its Rock and Roll look that S%!t up ! "
Nice, been to the HOB many many times.
When you saw them play in place of AIC was that by chance at the Rose Garden?
@@mulletover3575 it was outdoor at the Oklahoma state fair raceway during the "Metallifukinca" tour Suicidal Tendencies was the first act followed by Candlebox also Layne Stayley came out in a wheelchair in a leg cast if I remember correctly to make an appearance as well a Jerry doing one song with Metallica
Everyone should check out Kevin Martin and the Hi Watts The possibility of being
Really good stuff Kevin has some amazing lyrics

In my humble opinion you have not lived until you have seen Pete do some of the solos from about 3 feet away ! 🎸
I've been a fan since the release of their first album! They never went away! Although this is the last year and last album 😢
I saw Candlebox with Metallica at the Tampa fairgrounds in 1995 (I think). I think FearFactor & one other band there too. If memory serves me, James Hatfield was still all bandaged up and doing only vocals. I don’t remember who but they had another dude playing guitar. The show finished with a firework that went off to show the “Hatfield design” in the sky. I was 15 & had to buy my brother a ticket & pay for gas to get there.
"Don't you put your drugs in my face or I'm gonna put you in your place"
They play that in NA meetings.
Saw them when they were on the Happy Pills tour. One of the best live shows I've ever seen.
This band still plays live. Ive seen them open twice, they are great
Love Candlebox. Too underrated, imo
Everyone stop what you're doing right now and listen to Candlebox's 'Into The Sun' album and do it right freaking now. Best rock album in the last 20-years. Every single song is outstanding. Seriously, just listen to it. Just outstanding in every way.
In "you" when he says "doncha put yo drugs in mah face or I'm gon' put u in yo place - F U - I don't want it no more!" My adrenaline always pumps hard and I get pumped up. Only a handful of songs do this 2 me.
Perfectly put brother!
I love Candelbox !!! I was shopping in the mall when the first album came out and the clerk at slackers kept on replaying YOU on the intercom and I went in to see what was playing and bought the cassette and CD and soon after my wife took over custody of my CD in her car ! Best band ever in my book !!! I still listen to them all the time !!!
Far Behind has one of the best guitar solos ever
This! Absolutely, that solo kills
Peter Klett is a super underrated guitarist!!
Tone
The guitar work in Rain is fantastic as well. Just a great band
So true, it's so beautifully melodic and soars without being shreddy or too pretentious. You can absolutely tell he has major chops though. I feel the same about Spin Doctors and the solo in "Two Princes" - both epic 90s solos when guitar rock was still king.
That first album was pretty good. Far behind was a powerful song. I still scream along with it to this day.
I saw them open for Metallica after seeing them at a club a year or so before. They had the same energy and were great live.
Kevin sure loves to use the word Fuck as often as possible. But he backs it up with one helluva set of lungs and real emotion in every song.
Pull Away is by far one of their best songs. I absolutely love Candlebox!
Cover me was awesome!
The first Candlebox album is epic. Every song is amazing. I love this band.
Saw the singer and guitar player Open up for Tantric in Xmas of 2001 at the Alladin theater here in Vegas. They just did the hits . But still fun though.
‘Far Behind and ‘Change’ are powerful and impossible to listen to without it relating it to a part of your life, blasting it while singing along,,,
But you left me far behind,,,,
left me far behind
left me faaarrrr beeeehiiii.. yiiyiiyiind!!!
Great stuff to this day!!
I lived in Tacoma in the mid to late 90’s and worked at a record store so was on the periphery of the Puget Sound music scene. The casual fans liked Candlebox, but the hard core music snobs and pros HATED them.
Awesome video, awesome band and awesome time the 90's. Being born in 72, this might be the closest to the greatest musical paradigm shift ever!!
Cannot turn my radio off fast enough when Far Behind comes on. Radio ran that one into the ground.
Killer song by them is Can't Give In on the Airheads soundtrack.
Wtf you doing listening to the radio, you must be a truck driver.
I always thought the singer was Jay from Jay and Silent Bob fame.
"You" was my favorite song from them. Every musician in that group was awesome 👌
I knew it... should've called it👍 thanks man!
One album wonder. That being said, I LOVE that album. Top 10 all time favorite.
Nothing, they’re still around....
Candlebox's debut disc got stuck in my car CD player in 1997, it was my only CD in the car for 5 years.... never got tired of it.

The hate for CB has never made any sense to me. Musicians themselves can be some of the worst haters. Ironically I never liked any of the other Seattle bands of the time as much as I liked CB.
It’s because they are boring

"Lucy" was a great album.

I feel like a bands name can go a long way. And I don't think theirs is very good
Chris Cornell sure didn’t need a good band name. :P
Can agree 👍
I dug them. I actually quit playing guitar for about 8 years in the mid '80s to focus on family and work (little cover party / bar band). Candlebox inspired me to play again. Even covered "Far Behind" during a reunion which resulted in another party and bar gig. Sad they couldn't keep it together.
I hated Candlebox in the '90s and I still do. But an interesting story.
Same. I was a 90s goth kid so this wasn't my style but I enjoy these stories!
I love the fact that They have songs about Andrew Woods!!!!? And they were against drugs and most of the bullshiat that most bands from Seattle was doing!!!!? But hey “ it’s not really fair that they made it bigger than most bands that were from The city of Seattle!!!!!? But hey it’s all good!!!!!! I love how they play and the song’s that they’ve crafted!!!!!! I love rock bands who also have Blues and soul in their music!!!!!! And when he sings!” You know that he feels every single line of his songs!!!!! And then their musical skills!!!! That is why I love their music!!!! God bless you all today Shalom

So, I was listening to Lucy two days ago and thought that the record is flawless, let’s send a message to Kevin Martin and tell him I love the record.
Yesterday, he replied to my message and just today I found out Candlebox is playing an acoustic set in downtown Chicago!
