@@brian4019exactly. I can go with the idea that we do not understand what's beyond spacetime, but jumping to "consciousness" is what it is, is just another God of the gaps folly. Consciousness exists within the spacetime framework, so the idea that that is what exists outside of that framework is ludicrous. Might as well say it's pizza!

Imagine if humans where never born with eyes ever. We would go through life never knowing what we are missing. And try to explain sight to someone who's never seen anything. It's nearly impossible. I wonder if there's something like that now that we can't comprehend fully.
This is the misconception. We do not see with our EYES we Look. This is not the same thing. Looking is 3 dimensional, seeing has many depths, and the comprehension of sight is infinite.
This was so well explained, our human bodies has developed the "UI" that is fitting for survival purposes only. In Buddhism/Hinduism this is referred to as Maya. Amazing insight
Hoffman and the scientists he mentions are actually still within the boundaries of duality and are on a fundamentally different trajectory than the Indian sages. It’s interesting, but has nothing to do with the reality they think they’re talking about.
I don't agree with his definition of reality. What we perceive, see touch taste hear and smell is 100% real...But its not 100% complete. We can't see or hear the full spectrum of light and sound but what we do see and hear are part of the global reality. Its a question of scale also. Some very small insects have eyes and they can see as well. But its very possible they can't grasp the image of a full grown elephant even if they feed on it. But what they see and feed on is real. Can we see or feel the complete reality ? The universe is so vast even the concept is hard to grasp with our limited physical appendices that hadn't evolved to do such thing which is not essential to our day to day survival and reproduction. No need to see the atoms or electrons to evolve. No need to see far away galaxies either. That is our scale. Some other form of cognitive lives may live in other scales and perceive other parts of the global reality that we don't. And vice-versa. But there is one reality that unites us all. It shows itself as a complete one if you are yourself able to perceive it all in once.
It blew my mind ! This seems like a radical idea, but if you think deep about it, it actually does make sense, we have evolved to perceive reality in a certain way.
I mean this is just common sense no? Everything is energy, we perceive things in the way our brain translates it to us, plus we see around 10% of what’s actually around us aswell as only hearing around 10% of the same
Donald has one of my three favorite theories of everything! They all are basically theorizing the same thing: Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman says our senses are a user interface, computer engineer and nuclear scientist Bernardo Kastrup calls it a dashboard, and physicist Thomas Campbell says the body is an avatar and we get a datastream. They all posit that consciousness is what is fundamental. Superfascinating stuff. I won’t be surprised if they find it’s all some kind of evolved holofractographic matrix type of thing.
Lex Fridman has guests who have a more materialistic view of the world, not very often people that makes the auditoriy ask deeper questions about reality. I am referring to those who are in the majority in his interviews. It would be good to come up with more "esoteric" people, but who have had or have great credibility in the scientific world but have rebellious ideas about the ontology of the world. The history of Western philosophy can be seen as a battle between those that insist that the "physical universe" exists and those would claim that there is a much larger "world" which contains atemporal and nonspatial things as well. It would be good for those from the second category, such as Bernarndo Kastrup, John Hagelin, to be called in a decent way. Of course, people with a very high education and credentials who have nothing to do with "new age" ideas. I hope that Friedman will be more open minded from this point of view, to have invited those who were interviewed in "Closer to the truth" by Robert Lawrence Kuhn and by "Curt Jaimungal" with his "tao" chanel, with an open mind and without fear of being ridiculed. Donald Hoffman si a good start in that direction. It is a danger, I know, to have certain quests because you will be not taken seriously after inviting certain characters to speack for your chanel but it worths the time..
@@luchiandacian8815 - I agree with you wholeheartedly. The problem, at least in large part, is that science seems to have been captured by corporate interests and money, like so much else these days. The actual fact of the matter is that physicists have already definitively proven that there is no such thing as matter. The issue is that no one knows what to do with it, so they stick to their disproven paradigm.
@@talldarknindian3695 - Yes, I agree. I am also a student of those philosophies. I have a daily self-inquiry mediation practice and am constantly reading various texts that deal with the subject. The intersectionality of spiritualism and science is quite amazingly fascinating to watch. I enjoy Eckhart Tolle, but my favorite teacher right now is Dr. Angelo Dilullo. His way of explaining realization of Oneness and Self (or no-self) is really succinct and easy to understand while there is nothing to understand or conceptualize about the process. I think it is the natural evolution of consciousness we are talking about. Sam Harris is OK. His not seeing the evident Intelligence that is at work seems strange to me. He hasn’t looked seriously at the most medically well documented NDE of neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander. Experience is not possible without a neocortex, yet there it is, and cross-corroborated. Or Anita Moorjani. People don’t simply spontaneously heal from end stage lymphoma when the body is engulfed in lemon-sized tumors oozing black pus. But, there it is medically well-documented as well. And it matters not that these are so-called “anecdotal” since they cannot be explained in any mainstream paradigm in existence. So there HAS to be more going on. There IS something we are not seeing. Sam is a bit too much on the old materialist paradigm for me personally. I will definitely check out Gary Weber. Thanks.
They are all delusional. We know ranges our senses operate with. You don't evolve by adapting to imaginary constructs, but to real world around you. And no, consciousness is not "fundamental", but emergent. Our mind is just brain activation patterns, nothing more. There's no information in the brain, no images, no pixels, no words. There is no telepathy possible ever.. or any such voodoo nonsense between any two conscious agents or constructs in the Universe. These idiots lack basic understanding.
I agree, these guys bring intriguing conceptualzations of reality to these interviews. However, no matter how esteemed, how interdisciplinary the backgrounds of the theorizers may be, they almost always utilize digitally-based tropes and cliché scenarios-our own computer technology-in their attempts to explain consciousness and the nature of reality. Ironically, it’s a constricted thinking, necessitated by being all that we know, and currently all that we can know, using our minds, and the technology we ourselves developed to explain whatever force or entity gave rise to us in this universe (whatever that is). It seems a tad arrogant to purport to know the nature of reality/consciousness.
They make the same anthropomorphic mistake that most get caught in by overlooking the microbial as the basis for Life-the fact that there is NOTHING human within the meat-bag we call a body. The human body is comprised roughly of 100 trillion independent beings working together. 80% of the cells in a body are not even "human" (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites). The remaining 20% of the cells are also "independent" life forms (blood, nerve, skin, muscle) because you can give "your" blood to another-accept an organ from another-grow your skin in a petri dish without requiring "your" body. Essentially there is NOTHING human within a human body. So the positioning of inquiry from "Who am I" should transition to "What am I?" for deeper relevance. The aspect we identify as "self" or "ego" is more like a communication "app" for the collective consciousness of the system.
@PoliticalLifePhilosophy Glad you like it-been working on this for decades. If you want to ponder another-examine the emotions. Every thought has a feeling-and every feeling a thought. As Humans, we try to connect with LOVE which is contrary to the Universal Emotion. The Universe runs on FEAR because the BASE question any organism has when encountering another is; "Can I eat it or will it eat me?". The Universe does not "speak" in human languages such as English-Spanish-or Chinese. Again, most are anthropomorphic when they relate to the Universal and use linguistic constructs to connect to the process. All our philosophies and religions are essentially mental masturbation where we generally "think about thinking". We have this down to an art form-even today, "What is a woman?" generates novel responses. Emotion though is relevant throughout-dogs and cats show both extremes of Fear and Love. Every human language has words for love and fear-so emotions are constant throughout experiences. I teach "Responsibility for Thought and Feeling" and most do not like to be presented with this. That NOBODY can MAKE you happy or sad. You actually CHOOSE the emotional response or association. But our linguistic constructs deny this. If you said "David made me mad", everyone would automatically ask "What did David do?" and try to determine if they feel the anger is justified. The correct response from the group should be "Why are you CHOOSING to be mad?". We avoid this perspective due to personal FEARS. We are "afraid" of being "wrong". We also fear the unknown-that is why we invent half-baked religions and philosophies. We would rather believe a LIE than stand there and connect with the "I don't know" mindset. I have been working on this for nearly 4 decades. I write down my thoughts and feelings every hour and have stacks of old journals. This is the only way to understand Consciousness-make yourself the experiment. Also have a Master in Transpersonal Psychology where this was my thesis. Have a Great Day! There is a lecture by me on YT titled "Effects of the Human Hologenome on Consciousness" if you are interested.
But some of what that detaching entails merely compounds the problem. Exercise, eat and sleep well and you are giving yourself far better chances in life.
Thanks for having this conversation. Everyone who's had this intuitive insight has felt the same pain you both experience. Take peace from the truth that you come from a infinitely loving place. You're helping myself and many others get reassurance that we are not alone in this feeling. Never forget we create our own emotions in this reality :)
I would suggest there are too many people on earth for any one person to be going through a unique situation. I don't see where the pain comes from either? What do you mean by we come from a infinitely loving place? Not trying to argue, just high with lots of questions.
@@bososz I think the pain comes from our subjective reality being shattered. I can see the pain on Donald's face when he talks about this realisation. The realisation that we are not seperate individuals from the source, we are the source itself discovering itself and all of it's manifestations from alternative perspectives. We have developed egos through evolution which latch onto the idea that we are seperate and that things are happening to us because we are living in an illusion. This state of mind is the cause of all suffering. We are not bound by the ego we have never been bound, we have always been free, our beliefs created this and it has manifested into war and everything else we see wrong in the world. If you can sit still and look deep behind all of the thoughts, all of the beliefs, all of the expectations you will with practice eventually experience the same thing that every other person who's done this has experienced. Oneness. Infinite loving oneness and you'll realize that's what you are. No words or explanation will ever suffice everyone needs to experience it for themselves. I liked this video because I know it will encourage more people to question their reality and to experience truth themselves. Once you see the love within yourself you begin to see it in everyone else, in nature. We are nature. I know that the collective consciousness is becoming more self aware and more loving, even if in the eyes of the ego and the seperate self that makes us believe otherwise.
@@ryantoal Pretty sure I got most of that and have more or less been thinking along those lines. From my perspective it doesn't bother me that life could be a simulation, a dream or whatever life is in actuality. At the end of the day we cannot escape (possibly after death, who knows) our perceived reality so for me there is no sense in getting upset over something we can't control, at least not yet.
@ryantoa you better pray this new world religion of we re all one is the case, because if not and these are the deceivers so many people have been preparing for then you are fucked
We have to consider the conventions that turn natural phenomena into something we can mentally process and store. This complicates the equation. We assimilate most information through a complex, single machine that blows reality apart, then squeezes the bits into a primary structure, the binary code. Then it reassembles it in what the operatives think is going to please the recipients and further their own interest. The process has too many contaminants. This is when the whole thing gets messed up and most people end up with a distorted, reductive, submissive, vision. Authority becomes totalitarian. The result is chaos as so convincingly evidenced in the present space/time slice.
None of you are too dumb for this because you know you are you have to watch this stuff over and over again for your brain to collect enough information. True dummies don't know they're dumb.
Im actually beginning to believe that you can separate your physical self from your conscious self through self awareness I’ve been doing years of meditation and search for the truth as a result I feel more like I’m in a dream I don’t take reality as real as I used to. It’s been such a surreal experience that’s only starting to blossom I’m going to keep on meditating 🧘♀️
I'm so so glad this man is describing the truth in a comprehensible way. I actually tried to use a similar analogy, where game characters are using game tools to define their world, totally unaware of the code. If you split a game brick in half, whatever the smallest pieces are are still manifested by the code. You can't physically split a brick and reach code, because you're only operating within the interface.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if we would fill football stadiums with people engaged in this type of thing, versus let’s say sport. Cheering spirituality, cheering philosophy, cheering science; things that make life amazing. Sport is fun, but this type of thing is what propelled humanity on and on and on. Wonderful stuff.
This is just a gentle way to say that no one knows and everyone’s been wasting their time making up complicated words and trying to figure it out. 🤷♂️

I appreciate the analogy that compares the simulated universe to a computer interface for sending email. It makes a lot of sense that the universe might be far too complex for our brains to navigate, thus we need something simpler that will ensure our survival at every moment.

Listening to this i feel that pure wonder again, i think I’m coming to the time in my life where i want to search again. I was too young to take in half baked ideas, now with maturity i feel i could take it. Wonderful discussion, this man is brilliant.
Be careful friend, always have an anchor to quotidian life or you might lose your mind. It happened to me. Fortunately I am back, but I was barely hanging by a thread. Be mindful that you will never find capital T Truth, so always keep personal distance from ideas. That way, you'll even examine them better. If still you find yourself in trouble and panic creeps up, remember that there is no Truth other than your own. The way you define what life is, so shall be your experience of it. If you are convinced you live in a world of monsters, you WILL live in a world of monsters -and you will be able to explain why to anyone. But it doesn't have to be that way. Much Love ❤
@@ca7582 I went through the same, thank you for your words. Very difficult to keep a personal distance from ideas especially these which relate so closely to what makes you, you. Had a near psychotic break at 18 which is what I referred to in my comment. I thought my anchor should be a lifestyle which can take the brunt of thought, its when i slip from those healthy choice that the overwhelming senses hit. Don’t have it down yet but my mind feels tied into reality which i have made a very conscious effort to cultivate, nothing as bad as before at least. The trouble with truth for me is that is so often changes, you must be sure of your decisions but yet stay unaware of the true context you exist in. That really sends me.
I understood enough of this to recognise that there are people in this world who are way smarter than me. I had only just come to terms that reality existed in 3 physical dimensions + time. Now this. I'm out.

To describe the whole tree, your mind must be fixed on wholeness, not just trees, not just a particular branch, twig or leaf, not the fruit or creatures living in the tree, but how everything operates from its wholeness, its oneness.. This requires a deeper kind of thinking than you are ‘educated’ with.. This deeper thinking is where genuine understanding occurs, and necessarily requires your own unique participation. So the ‘education’ of simply copying what other people tell you is never going to be adequate for genuine understanding.. As far as genuineness is concerned, it is always YOU who are the final piece of the puzzle..
He didn't actually say anything smart though. He was just stating obvious things in a hard to understand way. I'm sure he is smart and has theories of what is beyond spacetime, but in this video nothing was said that you didn't already know.
I’ve always wondered if what I’m perceiving is the reality of what is actually happening. That somehow my perception is different than everyone one else is perceiving and those individuals each have different perceptions and even if 5 people are standing around talking to each other that each person is different and our brains correct the conversation and the scene for each individual. Who Knows?
I know that you perceive a reality that is completely unique. For better or for worse you cannot share a reality with anyone, that's the boat we all are in. Each of the 5 people you got standing around? Each has a different angle of sight. So, the person farthest away from you literally sees all kinds of stuff you can't. Everything from a sigh you couldn't hear or a reaction you didn't see cause you were caught up maybe in telling a story. God bless.
There's an inherent conundrum in these theories. If human is detached from reality, not able to see, feel or understand it, then all theories posed in this interview are as delusional as the human mind is thinking to know what reality is. If we cannot know reality, then every discussion we may have about it, is inherently futile.
but it has always been that way. There is "something" and we are continually learning about it. We just may never know exactly what that "somthing" consists of - because we're limited to our senses in investigating it.
@@lmak7696 Yes.. It appears to have "always" been this way. And who knows, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. From what I understand, it was about 250,000 years ago that, what it is now believed (or programmed to "know") that is human, came into this "reality", that we call life. And that "human" entered this equation exactly the way "human" is today. Darwin's evolution theories seem to have been fully rendered nonsensical. What if all is simply nothing more than a program? And the "human" cerebral cortex is nothing short of a trojan horse/projector/perceiver, through which the illusions of I, me and we, about "ourselves", as well as the external world as we "perceive/project" it, are all indeed nothing more than VR? How would we be able to know that we learn(ed) something, and are not just taking the next bait hook line and sinker?
@surojit karmokar Rulers are not limiting anyone. Everyone is simply giving it all away. If there are no slaves, then there can be no rulers. The masses are more than the few that like to portrait themselves are "rulers". They can only play that part, when the masses complement it, and play it along.
@surojit karmokar No one is limited by "rulers". There are no rulers when there are no slaves. The masses are more than the few that like to portrait themselves as "rulers". Therefore, when the masses don't give their sovereignty and self governance away, surrendering it to a few that claim to be their rulers, then there simply can be no rulers. People enslave themselves. People are all doing everything to themselves and to each other. We are only "limited" by our programmed and conditioned minds, our beliefs and our convictions, and the restricted stretch of our imagination.. I second your words on meditation.. 🙏
Watching Lex in the first few moments of the clip perfectly encapsulates the way we all go through trying to break down information and put it in our heads in some sort of sense.
That comparison of our perceptions of reality and true reality to the graphical user interface of an operating system and a computers actual code/binary running was mind expanding
The analogy of our perception being like a graphical user interface is very useful in understanding the fundamental nature of reality. Thank you for this.
I’ve felt this way a long time, but didn’t know how to express it. If the physical world isn’t ‘true’, then neither are the particles. They’re just building blocks.
"Commendation from NASA for research work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the Earth's atmosphere and the Moon's surface for navigation of the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.. Dr. Milo Wolff has found the structure of the electron consisting of two spherical quantum waves, one moving radially outward and another moving radially inward. The center of the waves is the nominal location of the electron 'particle'. These waves extend infinitely, like charge force. All 'particle' waves mix and contribute to each other, thus all matter of the universe is interrelated by this intimate connection between the fundamental 'particles' and the universe. The natural laws are a direct consequence of this Wave Structure of Matter (WSM), thus WSM underlies all of science." spaceandmotion
When we were infants, and very young children, we were experiencing what we are trying to grasp now, as adults. We didn’t know what anything was. And we were very content. Why are we so afraid to let go of the fiction we have been consuming ever since?
I love how science is coming closer to explain this 'human experience' - sometimes the most 'kindergarten' explanation makes the most sense. Even though I believe Hermes Trismegistus was not far off. "The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding." ps. thank you for this topic
An ET from the Brazilian Varghina Alien crash telepathically told a doctor he felt sorry for humans because we have been completely detached from our spiritual self. Also we can do everything they can do but we just dont know how to do it. He was telepathically saying we dont know who we truly are but that whatever or whoever detached us from our spiritual self. I think it is to learn maybe.

I think its part of a cosmic joke that only a handfull of people are around at any one point in time to break all this stuff down. Whatever they find will not change the reality that this physical carcass we walk around in will someday stop working. We all got it coming.

This conversation is so illuminating. Lex’s work is invaluable for humanity. I sometimes lament the few times he has spent with snake oil salesmen, I feel those are lost opportunities to do more of the food stuff.
We lack the language to deal with this, I don't see why what we experience can't remain being called reality, and use another word for what goes on behind the scenes. Don't step on my reality Don!
Very well said :) We are born to experience, in many ways. Maybe it is the case that some amazing stuff goes on in the transcendental realm but for us to relate to one another as human beings, we need to share experiences as we are story tellers.
But reality derives from "real" which, according to Oxford Languages, means "actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact; not imagined or supposed." Accordingly, the word reality refers to that which is objective (the true state of things) and not subjective (the observer's perceived state of things). It's possible that the objective and subjective will sometimes be the same (ie reality will be what you are experiencing) but not always, and therefore it would be incorrect to refer to subjective experience as reality.
So much of this discussion about reality is simplified with a clear definition of what a 'thing' is. A 'thing' is that which has more interior relationships than exterior. A 'thing' has three main properties: inputs, internal mechanisms, and outputs. The inputs and outputs are always less complex than the internal mechanisms. If we really had no idea about reality, then reality might as well be an undifferentiated fog of random fluctuations. But it's not.
Until someone has experienced true synchronicity you won’t be able to explain it to them. I have experienced hardcore synchronicity and it rocked my world. I remember sitting in an empty boardroom at work (actually) after having one unfurl, and thinking ‘this changes everything’. We are in an illusion inside an illusion inside an illusion.
“Space time is doomed” “Why is it doomed?” “Spacetime has had a good run… Billions of terms reduced to one term” There’s no attempt to make the explanation accessible to mere mortals. I wish Lex either put it in his own words or pushed back on the guest to give a more down to earth explanation.
@@numbstuffpeoplesay9309 good question. I think a good attempt at an explanation would be that an average Lex Friedman subscriber (which I imagine is at least somewhat intellectually curious) would walk away from this with a more concrete understanding of what the alternatives to “spacetime” are. hi @@EncourageLegacy HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED THE INEFFABLE THROUGH? I consider the raw sense our base language, in that language much has been quite clearly voiced/heard in my mind. You might say I continually experience the ineffable separation with regards to sharing with others but with regard to hearing the 'words/voice' of sensible reality for myself ... I don't have words to tell you how deep and rich my communion with reality/nature is ... but if you have had the same/similar experiences then words are not necessary. I've had two out of body experiences and various lucid dreams so I have experienced altered states of consciousness - and indeed altered versions of reality. Let's put it like this - when I had my OBE and lucid dream experiences, that other "reality" I was part of felt a thousand times more real and lucid and vivid than my current waking reality. I never used to believe such a thing was possible until it happened to me. So please keep an open mind.
I had one out of body experience years ago and the crazy part is it was while I was at work helping a customer I was up in the very corner of the room looking over at myself it scared me so it only lasted a couple of seconds I never tell anyone because it sounds crazy unless it’s happened to them so it’s nice to have someone to share the experiences with. It actually changed my views on everything after it happened. So I’m glad I experienced it I’m not ever looking forward to it happening again though honestly.
One time I did 5 tabs of acid and at the peak of my trip I had a moment where I was floating above my body staring at myself like it was a zoomed out camera it was insane. In the moment it felt normal (I was tripping very hard so I was kinda all over the place mentally I’m guessing) but to this day years later I remember the image of being above my body. I’ve never experienced anything like that before and I’ve done acid/shrooms a few times before that and nothing ever that crazy

In 2015 I was declared dead at the scene of an accident. This is basically what I learned. *The universe exists because we perceive it to do so* Consciousness and the physical universes are one and the same thing, they can not and do not exist without each other. there is but one consciousness, the universal consciousness that we all share a part of. the more complex a system the more of the universal consciousness it possesses. What is amazing to me is all areas of science and religion and philosophy are tending to coalesce around this view.
Just because our perception is heavily abstracted from the reality of fundamental constructs doesn't mean that our perception is NOT our reality. Or that it is doomed.
True. It's about perception and appearances for us. Sure, sb could blast themselves into oblivion with huge doses of deliriants or psychedelics and radically alter their perception forever but I maintain that when you look at sb, there is a certain 'meant to be' element to them. Comparing reality to a computer program is quite clever because it also points to a creator. Because that computer program didn't create itself and if you open that computer you won't find its operating system or evidence of a creator. You might say because you can't see it that it doesn't exist but if you figure out how to turn the computer on you will see it
Mostly over my head but I think I understand him as saying that we don't perceive reality as it is but as some kind of interface which hides reality as it truly is. Does this strengthen the theory of existence as a simulation or the idea of biocenterism? Would have liked to hear from another expert with an opposing opinion so that we know we are not taken for ride by a mistaken expert.
The basis of Hoffman's work is built around the importance of fitness payoffs in evolution. What that means is evolution selects for the optimal solution to the evolutionary problem (how to best pass on genetics). We are operating in evolved bodies that have been optimized over millions of years to continue passing on our genetics, and that is it. It doesn't pay off evolutionarily speaking to create a body that is aware of the fundamental nature of existence, so we don't have that body. But, according to Hoffman, with the proper math, we can have that body and can essentially live outside of the limitations of our current understanding. He has done a couple of videos with the channel Closer To Truth (which is an awesome channel) that feature a lot more in depth pushback. He is definitely an outlier, but regularly engages with critics.
@@0wn-nothing-be-happy Thanks for the explanation. I don't disagree with the necessary fitness payoffs in evolution but what I have some qualms about is his claim, as you explained, that it doesn't pay off involuntarily speaking to create a body that is aware of the fundamental nature of existence. I think that is clear and has always understood by scientists and most people that we were wired to understand the fundamental nature of reality until some of us got the mathematical and scientific tools to do abstraction and experimentation to zoom into the depth of the miniscule scale of nature or zoom out to the cosmic scale, learn about the electromagnetic spectrum and that white light is made up of different colors etc. But what I hear is that Hoffman says there is reality beyond that we were not evolved to see but he, an involved ape, understand that!
@@Wardoon Most have that qualm. A materialist might accept that what we perceive is an interface, but they think the substratum, the "real reality", must somehow be related to the interface in some sort of spatial or temporal way. Like atoms making up an apple. Our intuition can make sense of that. Tiny sand grains can add to a rock. And Hoffman is saying no, it is exactly not like that. You can never imagine the reality from clues in the appearance. Reductionism won't work. In that way the appearance is completely untrue, with respect to the reality. BUT, if you understand the reality properly, then, in a very simple way, you'll be able to explain the appearances.

@@HigherPlanes You are welcome.. The Nature of Existence is not a question of what Human beings say, think or believe. We only have the opportunity to become consciously aligned with its reality. @@fluentpiffle Indeed we have a very narrow view of reality...We see what we are meant to see, nothing less nothing more, unfortunately it doesn't answer all the "why" we have asked throughout history. The "computer science" view of consciousness. Computer scientists also speculate about consciousness in the form of an "artificial intelligence". Their notion is that the brain is like a computer. If consciousness is purely materialistic, a side-effect of the brain, then in principle, we should be able to construct a brain-like computer that is conscious. A group of researchers who straddle the boundary between neuroscience and computer science are currently working to build artificial brains (out of computer chips or supercomputers) that specifically replicate the biological organization of the neurons and synapses of the human brain, in order to see if they can simulate the brain's properties: from its intelligent problem-solving behavior, to its "consciousness". In addition to researchers deliberately attempting to replicate a human brain, there are also technologists who theorize that, because computers and computer networks are growing at an exponential rate in number, complexity, sophistication, and "intelligent" behavior, it is inevitable that a "superintelligence" - maybe even a conscious one - will appear sometime in the twenty-first century, spontaneously "emerging" out of all those computers and computer networks, much like neuroscientists claim consciousness "emerges" from the brain. They refer to this event as "the singularity"
Indeed I've heard it theorized that a sufficiently intelligent AI may be able to make some of these theoretical physics breakthroughs directly. Perhaps in part because it won't be constrained by "our" UI.
This was such an interesting episode. Even if I don't have a background in physics apart from high school. I understand most of it thanks to Lex moderation and of course the brilliant eloquence of the guest speaker. Incredible insights. So interesting and very psychedelic I may add haha

Imagine if physicists embraced psychedelics. If you are looking for a flashlight past time space, maybe try the substances that peel away its layers. Not saying all the answers are there, but if they were more open I bet a few ideas would pop up.
I'm sure some do in secret. But if you're an out of the closet psychonaut physicist you'll lose respect and validty amongst that science community and will never be able to publish anything and have it taken seriously. Atleast that's what I got from reading into it. I would be fascinated to get a recording of them sharing their thoughts after a DMT trip.
These drugs just interfere with the normal functioning of your brain, making you believe that you are transcending time and space when in reality your brain is temporarily malfunctioning. You have a better chance at getting to the truth by staying sane and logical. Like scientists have been doing so far. He’s saying it’s time for them to go past the notion that space-time contains the fundamental building blocks of reality. That space-time was a good heuristic so far, but now to be more precise and closer to the truth, they need to think past that. Which you can’t do if your messing up your brain functions.
It’s as simple as this. When we volunteer to come here (and we do volunteer) we come to have a human experience, and that involves this dense matter reality and linear time (which btw is a complete illusion). If you want to be a human, you must be ‘human’: that means not having knowledge of what you actually are or where you actually came from. And anyway, if you could remember, the homesickness and longing to be with God again would tear you apart. This reality is an illusion inside an illusion inside an illusion. We come here on a tour of duty, to learn and experience. And when you accept this, all this crap about trying to make sense of it all with science and physics is pointless. You’re trying to understand an illusion. Pointless.
It seems strange that he is willing to throw out current paradigms of physics but not those of evolutionary theory. I wonder how he accounts for human consciousness / metacognition emerging from incremental "random" mutation of physical agents, if the word "physical" no longer means anything?
If you die before you made kids, you don't have kids. It's barely a theory. Organisms aren't perfect copy machines so some kind of change through generations is inevitable. Add those 2 together and evolution is the outcome. It has a lot less variables than trying to explain/figure out what reality is.
@@tacitozetticci9308 Yes, I agreed. Hoffman's fundamental premise is that we have not evolved to know the truth. The problem is how he knows that evolution is true. How does he know this?

Dmt
Understatement
This is the misconception. We do not see with our EYES we Look. This is not the same thing. Looking is 3 dimensional, seeing has many depths, and the comprehension of sight is infinite.
It is!, I've seen it.
I do believe that blind people can see. In their dreams and via hypnosis, regression past lifes. It's there in their memories 😃
This was so well explained, our human bodies has developed the "UI" that is fitting for survival purposes only. In Buddhism/Hinduism this is referred to as Maya. Amazing insight
we are so close to the convergence of modern material science and the spiritual science that we left behind... It's so exciting!
Evolution and natural selection are also illusions in non-dual Buddhist and Hindu systems.
Hoffman and the scientists he mentions are actually still within the boundaries of duality and are on a fundamentally different trajectory than the Indian sages. It’s interesting, but has nothing to do with the reality they think they’re talking about.
I don't agree with his definition of reality.
What we perceive, see touch taste hear and smell is 100% real...But its not 100%
complete.
No need to see the atoms or electrons
to evolve. No need to see far away galaxies either. That is our scale.
Some other form of cognitive lives may
live in other scales and perceive other parts of the global reality that we don't.
And vice-versa. But there is one reality
that unites us all. It shows itself as a complete one if you are yourself able to perceive it all in once.
I agree. If we don't experience reality then what is reality even. It's not an illusion it's just the perception of reality, not less or more real.
It blew my mind ! This seems like a radical idea, but if you think deep about it, it actually does make sense, we have evolved to perceive reality in a certain way.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzxzzzzz🎉🎉🎉
Sounds radical to whom, who exposed to TRADITIONAL philosophical/scientical/religious points of view...
Meditation will make this all seem obvious, yet in a way that language cannot describe.
I mean this is just common sense no? Everything is energy, we perceive things in the way our brain translates it to us, plus we see around 10% of what’s actually around us aswell as only hearing around 10% of the same
My dog sees the couch. I see the couch. We both sit on that perception

Self protection from trauma. Yeah, agree many are detached from reality as a way to cope.
Agreed!
It's deeper than that. What we have to cope with itself is delusory in terms of importance. Cultural and linguistics artifacts are mostly imaginary.
@Muneeb Iqbal I agree. I'm sure that I did not fully understand the video.
@Muneeb Iqbal nonsense. People are the product of their choices.
I'm too dumb for this.
Me too..

It’s been such a surreal experience that’s only starting to blossom I’m going to keep on meditating 🧘♀️
Yep. Reality is real.
I'm so so glad this man is describing the truth in a comprehensible way. I actually tried to use a similar analogy, where game characters are using game tools to define their world, totally unaware of the code. If you split a game brick in half, whatever the smallest pieces are are still manifested by the code. You can't physically split a brick and reach code, because you're only operating within the interface.
what utility or wisdom does this actually have though?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we would fill football stadiums with people engaged in this type of thing, versus let’s say sport. this is the most helpful and meaningful 15 min of my perception of my "life time" (we don't have the words.. yet..(may never) to even describe **reality**) I've ever experienced. again Donald and Lex thank you thank you thank you both for BeIng🙏
Hi, reality is not known by a words it is primarily known by sense experience.
So funny, hated Maths in school but loved Philosophy and they’re the same! I for a time went deep into what I was and what this world was and was consumed by these incomprehensible ideas, i forgot to care for my psychical self and became numb to reality.
Much Love ❤

Don’t have it down yet but my mind feels tied into reality which i have made a very conscious effort to cultivate, nothing as bad as before at least. I had only just come to terms that reality existed in 3 physical dimensions + time. Now this. I'm out.
We are already in Madness... It is the failure to question your 'normality' that perpetuates whatever madness it becomes..
"History abundantly shows that people's views of the universe are bound up with their views of themselves and of their society. The debate in cosmology has implications far beyond the realm of science, for it is a question of how truth is known. How these questions are answered will shape not only the history of science, but the history of humanity." (Eric Lerner, 1992)
“Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking; a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. . . If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then, we are up for grabs for the next charlatan (political or religious) who comes rambling along.” - (Carl Sagan)
“Verily, when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts, it drinks even of dead waters.” (Kahlil Gibran)
He's incorrect about most of what he was saying.
they aren't smarter ... they're just more educated.

The natural laws are a direct consequence of this Wave Structure of Matter (WSM), thus WSM underlies all of science."

Ya right Maya. And also in Hindu scriptures the word Prapancha (from Sanskrit) is used to represent Universe. Which also means illusion of existence.
@@bhnuc what is mentioned as beyond the maya?? what can we imagine exists outside of everything?
We lack the language to deal with this, I don't see why what we experience can't remain being called reality, and use another word for what goes on behind the scenes. Don't step on my reality Don!
Very well said :) We are born to experience, in many ways. Maybe it is the case that some amazing stuff goes on in the transcendental realm but for us to relate to one another as human beings, we need to share experiences as we are story tellers.
But reality derives from "real" which, according to Oxford Languages, means "actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact; not imagined or supposed."
Accordingly, the word reality refers to that which is objective (the true state of things) and not subjective (the observer's perceived state of things).
It's possible that the objective and subjective will sometimes be the same (ie reality will be what you are experiencing) but not always, and therefore it would be incorrect to refer to subjective experience as reality.
@@jagdiogan424 And what is the true state of things?
@@Seanus32 I don't know, and as far as I know nobody has the answer. But that doesn't mean reality is subjective
@@jagdiogan424 If it's not subjective and not objective then what other standard can we apply? Maybe 'just' IS-ness?
So much of this discussion about reality is simplified with a clear definition of what a 'thing' is.
A 'thing' is that which has more interior relationships than exterior. A 'thing' has three main properties: inputs, internal mechanisms, and outputs. The inputs and outputs are always less complex than the internal mechanisms.
If we really had no idea about reality, then reality might as well be an undifferentiated fog of random fluctuations. But it's not.

ARE WE IN THE CAVE, OURSELVES?
Plato's allegory of the cave is most simply seen in bible based religions. (Judaism, Christianity and Islam)
Planning in Plato was used to write the bible, those that believe it are in a sense 'chained' to that world view, they are in that philosophical story 'cave'. Those that go through a de-conversion process and learn to see the world more objectively have come out of that cave.
Those in a philosophical deception are not aware of how blinded by false beliefs and reasoning they are. According to the allegory they think shadows are substantial reality.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED THE INEFFABLE THROUGH?
I consider the raw sense our base language, in that language much has been quite clearly voiced/heard in my mind.
Words are so pale and weak by comparison unless they evoke and bring to remembrance the vibrant qualities of substantial reality as we sense it, otherwise words are sort of grey - lacking colour or still by comparison to a fresh breeze and so on.
You might say I continually experience the ineffable separation with regards to sharing with others but with regard to hearing the 'words/voice' of sensible reality for myself ... I don't have words to tell you how deep and rich my communion with reality/nature is ... but if you have had the same/similar experiences then words are not necessary.

Sure, sb could blast themselves into oblivion with huge doses of deliriants or psychedelics and radically alter their perception forever but I maintain that when you look at sb, there is a certain 'meant to be' element to them. It's rarely wise to tamper with that.

Comparing reality to a computer program is quite clever because it also points to a creator. Because that computer program didn't create itself and if you open that computer you won't find its operating system or evidence of a creator. You might say because you can't see it that it doesn't exist but if you figure out how to turn the computer on you will see it
that is actually quite true

His book is wonderful
BUT, if you understand the reality properly, then, in a very simple way, you'll be able to explain the appearances.
always knew we had something wrong with light and space-time, not wrong just limited, we're still using rockets lol but with this understanding, hopefully we're on the edge of something more. this hit me like a ton of bricks this morning 🤯
This is a modern take on Plato’s allegory of the cave.
This sounds to me like some scientists. Breaking down reality down to the smallest atom. So he can win a Noble Price. We all know that everything is made of atoms and molecules. I say enjoy life , be happy , respect one and other and love hard.

@@fluentpiffle Beautiful quotes and excellent observations. Thanks for sharing.
@@HigherPlanes You are welcome..
The Nature of Existence is not a question of what Human beings say, think or believe. We only have the opportunity to become consciously aligned with its reality. Even then, we are not obliged to understand, we simply develop ('evolve') the capacity and opportunity to see that which is necessarily so..
@@fluentpiffle Indeed we have a very narrow view of reality...We see what we are meant to see, nothing less nothing more, unfortunately it doesn't answer all the "why" we have asked throughout history. Terence McKenna used to say, "it's irrational to think that reality should be rationally apprehendable." It's quantum dynamics and chaos.
@@HigherPlanes If we are sticking with what people used to say, we are also negating what we can achieve now..
For instance, can we actually BE ‘rational’ until we have learned how ‘rationality’ comes to exist?
Is it not more likely that Terrence McKenna was merely making excuses for his own lack of understanding?
Do we question whether ‘why’ is a valid question at all?
Excellent. Thank you. I look forward to hearing from these thinkers.

Donald Hoffman. One very knowledgable man.
Imagine if physicists embraced psychedelics. If you are looking for a flashlight past time space, maybe try the substances that peel away its layers. Not saying all the answers are there, but if they were more open I bet a few ideas would pop up.
From the way people talk about DMT experiences, makes you wonder if that isn't a peek past the first layer!
You can perform magic without drugs
These drugs just interfere with the normal functioning of your brain, making you believe that you are transcending time and space when in reality your brain is temporarily malfunctioning.
You have a better chance at getting to the truth by staying sane and logical. Like scientists have been doing so far.
He’s saying it’s time for them to go past the notion that space-time contains the fundamental building blocks of reality. That space-time was a good heuristic so far, but now to be more precise and closer to the truth, they need to think past that. Which you can’t do if your messing up your brain functions.
Indeed, if only we listened to the tweakers of kensington ave philadelphia! What a load of bs!
Can someone summarize this to a understandable form for all of us please lol
Reductionist bullshit
You got it, the point is that reality can't be understood if there indeed is a fundamental one.

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." -Philip K. Dick
PKD 🙌
Such a narrowing, blinding, self/centered statement. Can only come from a D.
What is more real; reality itself or its perception?
Pointless.
Nicola Bryan - I love you 👏❤️🙏
It seems strange that he is willing to throw out current paradigms of physics but not those of evolutionary theory.
Exactly. This guy's "theory" is self refuting.
Imo what seems strange is people still refuting Evolution. There are even psychologists and doctors out there that do the same and it's mental.
@@tacitozetticci9308 Yes, I agreed. Hoffman's fundamental premise is that we have not evolved to know the truth. The problem is how he knows that evolution is true. How does he know this?
@@jmarronineto He seems to think it is not necessary to know the "truth" as such, as much as continuing to modify our models and strategies towards the truth, which will always exceed our grasp.
