JP has literally said that the only answer to Nietzsche’s famous “Stare into the Abyss” quote is that Love is the answer. Nietzsche literally said over and over again that “love” is stupidity at its most unapologetic and insipid. And as per Nietzsche’s sister’s toying with his work. Yes, but his work made it easy. Nietzsche repeatedly talked about the very basis of Eugenics. He pushed elimination of the “weak and the botched”. He truly desired a world in which the stupid and crippled and unintelligent were treated like trash. He wanted a world of the “Great Blonde Beast” who rewrote the values that would eventually become trend and, finally, LAW.
Fred’s so damn intense and challenging that I find I can only handle him intermittently. Nietzsche, if you read his stuff carefully, can be disorienting. It becomes too much, too multiplicitous. We are all multiplicities, but it’s really good to take a break, and focus on the task on hand.🦅🐍🦉
I really don't think Jp has a good understanding of Nietzsche. He always talks about him in generalities and quite frankly everything nietzsche criticizes is represented in JP. Psychologist, scholar, and Christian. Like what
Being nietzschean is a layered thing? Machiavelian etc. Talk is just talk. Though it does seem Peterson is a sloppy thinker rather than a noble aristocratic manipulator. A lot of his claims seem to be not truth but therapy, which would be fine if labeled accordingly. It seems he struggles separating therapeutic and epistemic goals, a bit pathetic for a thinker.
@@kasuo7039 I agree that Jordan Peterson does this. Do you think all Philosphy is like that though? If an individual doesn't choose presuppositions, they won't get caught in trying to defend a position, but rather explore them. Therefore, you can better understand anything without being in a paradigm lock, and gain deep truths that way. A paradigm lock that the Athiests, Theists, Existantialists, Modernists, Postmodernists, etc are in.
@@kasuo7039 Don't you think that "Philosophy is simply the activity of arbitrarily choosing a set of presuppositions and pretending that it is reasonable" is a presupposition in it of it self?
Some thoughts Dr. Peterson helped me wrestle with (and reconcile with): Carl Jung (allegedly) said: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will control your life (& you will call it: 'fate')." How I understand that: Until we face our Traumas/Hangups (aka, inner "demons"), we will continue to repeat catastrophically toxic patterns, and we will blame God for it. And which sneaky little chaotic creature is best known for doing that, class? Is it not the devil himself? Hm 🤔 Well, if demons only have enough God Given Power to provoke our inner "demons...." And we are claiming to be on a Religious Path, but we are not *actually* reconciling said Traumas/hangups (aka: "demons"), then, it's as Nietsche said: "Religion, is the opiate of the masses." I.E. It's all simply lip service; the pharisees, are on the pulpit.
When two smart people talk about such an interesting abstract concept/s, its impossible to do anything but to just apreciate the linguistic art they produce with their interaction.
This drive towards unity is pretty much the most destructive thing in humans. Values, we create them all the time, otherwise we would still be in the stone age. And a lot of people do have a sense of self that is one, otherwise you are a psychiatric case. He has to deny the whole field of psychology to say that. I think he wins the Guiness Record about being the most wrong possible in 30 minutes, and it's quite an achievement. Sometimes he will say something sensible, then quickly undermine it with some big claim, it's quite frustrating to listen to. As far as I know, Good and Evil, Nietzsche identified them with the slave morality of Christianity, a will to power of the powerless who has to rely on guile to get what he wants, by moralizing the powerful. So he would tell people God is dead, so that they would realize they were actually free and did not need to deny their lives by following silly laws, like not to murder of not to steal and so on and so forth. Those external laws impede the pure will to power, which is basically the Dyonisus principle, chaos mostly but also enjoyment of the senses and destruction of the mind by alcohol. Some divine craziness. It's not a power of control, true, but one of pure destruction, of others and the self. Definitively not flourishing in the normal sense of the world.
“Why do you think you can rely on yourself as the source of values?” I don’t but we don’t have a choice. Even if your fairytale god exists he doesn’t reveal himself so your religious philosophies are still the inventions of man
Was #125 from Die Froliche Wissenschaft about the death of God, or the death of belief in God? Clearly he was pointing toward the death of belief on a sincere level in an age when scientific materialism was overwhelming that belief. That was a humanist hubris that Jung also warned against. One of my favorite passages from Jung is one in which he cites a rabbinical student asking his Rabbi, “why doesn’t anyone hear the voice of God anymore, like the prophets.” The Rabbi replied “ because no can stoop so low”. We are an arrogant lot aren’t we? 🐍

Dr. Peterson does not really understand Nietzsche. Dr. Peterson must read more and more, and discuss with philosophers.

In social media comment sections I've given up leaving opinions that reflect your sentiment. Always, they're attacked, as if I crossed a moral boundary. But I always end up at an impasse after the opposition is forced to digest the foundation of your sentiment. anymore because I'm exhausted. I'm not an absurdist or nihilist on this matter. Folks just aren't willing to read and that's the bottom line. They watch and listen to a 1-3 hr interview and it reformats their thinking. My long-winded rambling aims to plead with folks to read Nietzsche's work. This Peterson fellow has crossed over the boundaries of Nietzsche's work. I know this is a fact because I'm well versed in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and his follow up, "Beyond Good and Evil." I was young at the time and had a philosophy instructor break down, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, which was extremely impactful on my life, so when I read, Beyond Good and Evil outside of school I took my time. When I listen to Peterson he sounds no different than the average middle aged intellect that talks about Nietzsche. It always has an unnecessary spin on it. The only mind that Peterson speaks of with accuracy is Jung. His take on Nietzsche's of that period is simply not accurate. He reads it like a staunch Christian that doesn't explore the depths of his primary ideologies. Peterson is useful, well read, educated and an eloquent speaker, but occasionally he goes off the rails entirely. He merges Psychotherapeutic modalities and philosophical concepts. I don't like it. I once had his respect as a philosophical academic, but I'm only on bored with some of his political stances. He believes aliens drew cave drawings. That's when I stopped taking him seriously
Peterson is a psychologist not a philosopher and he often blends the topics together. It’s a disservice to both. Not a popular opinion but worth pointing out. Many modern philosophers see him out of his lane; he’s more internet celebrity than anything else.

33:00 let me some this up … if there is no rules laws sir constraints. There is essentially NOTHING . Without LIGHT there is no DARK . And vise versa . Once one single thing in the universe took a position every single thing followed.. starting with light that defined the dark .
Nietzsche was an original thinker not a puppet. So you don’t have the capacity to criticize him. Previously, you were a good professor, but now you are a stooge.
Very telling peterson constantly sticks nietzsche together with dostoyevski and talks about "style", rather than having any connection to the unusually rich ground of philosophy in his time, divergence, growth and collapse in Germany, England, US, and first translations from the asian traditions. He has no idea how N was oriented intellectually. Start with his interest in presocratics, schopenhaur, goethe and wagner as kicking against the german academy of kant and hegel.
Jordan Peterson having a lecture series on good vs evil despite the fact he clearly hasn’t read the book is by far the craziest thing he’s ever done and that’s saying a lot
People like Candace Owens & Nick Fuentes are using it as a unifying rally call to their supporters to push their antisemitism. It's the perfect example of people using the highest order good to tilt the world back towards something like nazi germany. which Jordan has often described as 'hell'.
'Real communism has never been tried' 🎶😂🤣. Also, he didnt really answer Lex on the 'rigid axioms' question. Come on JBP, dont we all make up our own morality over the course of one life time regardless of having a common religious ethos or not? No one is making up thier own morality either, with or without religion, morality is born from influence. Books give us an ethos even if they are not the bible. Observation of nature is really the only logical place to find God's morality. To know God. Social influence. The media. In fact, the Law. So, no is capable of making up thier own morality entirely on thier own. It isnt possible. Still, the fact remains, all the morality of all the religions has all been made up by mankind.
Jordan Peterson never studied philosophy. All the crap that he says is not peer-reviewed. Everything he says is a misunderstanding, or cherry-picking of philosophy ideas to come to a conclusion he already had. I actually have an MA in philosophy. This guy would never get away with the nonsense he says in front of a Nietzschean scholar. Furthermore, no, Michel Foucault and Marx were not all about power. I don’t get why so many dumb people listen to this guy. Watch his debate on religion with Sam Harris (which is probably his only forte), just so you know how dumb he really is. He uses big words to impress or confuse, not to advance a particular idea. Everything he says can be said in a way an average person could understand, but he chooses not to.
See Foucault's idiotic notion of truth and knowledge, as absolutely demolished by Nicholas Shackel. Also, peer review does not mean anything with captured institutions or disciplines that do not refer to base reality and create models of it that actually allow belief independent applications thanks to their predictive power (most of the time actual science and not the "soft sciences").
Actually, Foucault, like Nietzsche, was obsessed with power; however, he viewed power as something ubiquitous, contained in the discourse and norms that shape the people we become. Foucault just ripped off Heidegger and Nietzsche, and Marx appropriated nearly all of Hegel's thought, inverting the Hegelian dialectic, paving the way for his dialectical materialism. Since much of Marx's thought is predicated on the Hegelian master-slave dialectic and the power dynamics of that relationship, Marx, in a similar way, is also obsessed with power. I also have a degree in philosophy.
@@sebastiansirvas1530 you can advance novel ideas within academia, like David Chalmers does with his theory of consciousness, but you have to be accurate with facts and representation of other people’s ideas. There is a reason why Peterson has lost his credentials. He has an agenda first, then he cherry picks to arrive to the conclusion he wanted to arrive to. It is very difficult to get a paper approved to be published in a prestigious journal.
@@JosephK.-ph7nr yes, but they did not refer to power the same way, and much less the way Jordan Peterson implies. For example, for Nietzsche, the will to power had more to do with overcoming or selfactulisation, while for Foucault meant somethjng more like “hell is other people” (Sartre) or the panopticon (Jeremy Bentham) in which laws and norms force people behave differently than they otherwise would. This view is correct. Also, Nietzsche refer to religion (in particular, christianity) as slave morality. How funny how he never mentions this!
@danielguzman6934 Peterson lost his credentials because of the new Lysenkoism going on in the pertinent institutions. Don't get it twisted. Also, you clearly are not familiar with the Sokal Hoax or the Grievance Studies Affair. Also, it's funny how you did not engage with Shackel's argument at all.
@@FiliphRippel We're not talking about Priests and I'm not sure why you brought them up. We were discussing Nietzsche and Peterson, and it is obvious he has read Nietzsche whether you agree with his perspective or not.
"Anime profile picture, statement involves most obvious surface level observational information, statement is ended by skull emoji, nothing of value was commented on" 💀
It makes me deeply upset to think that because of this man, thousands of people will form simplistic views on incredibly complicated thinkers such as Marx, Foucault, and postmodernists more generally. Yet they will be given a rich and nuanced interpretation in Nietzsche, Christianity and Fascism
Marx and Foucault especially hold enormous influence over the direction of academic sociology. Nietzche is seen more as a pop philosopher, his message is widely known but his ideology is never cited within influential philosophical discussion, as applied to modern society. Foucault is truly vile though, while Marxist ideals arguably work “in a perfect world”. Foucault has nothing to realistically offer us beyond the extremely naive opinions of the bourgeoisie, completely removed from the situation on the streets.
Suggest you focus on the origin of your upset before outsourcing it externally. But if not I’m sure that there is gain in examining why is the speaker so affecting

Jordan’s not really clueless cause he has four hour lectures on Nietzsche that pre-date the Jordan we have now. And Nietzsche was not really someone with a congruent framework to work with like Jung. I hear people argue he is consistent in his ideas. I don’t think he was for the most part. No one really agrees on Nietzsche in general. But as of late, I think you’re correct.

I came for the comments, and they have not disappointed. Starting with beyond Good and Evil lolz, tell me you have an agenda or do not understand....
Like what
Yup. Jp’s whole schtick now is doing apologetics for Christianity and Judaism. It’s a shame because he is an intelligent guy
Your "thinker," died pathetically.

Some thoughts Dr. Peterson helped me wrestle with (and reconcile with): Carl Jung (allegedly) said: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will control your life (& you will call it: 'fate')."
How I understand that: Until we face our Traumas/Hangups (aka, inner "demons"), we will continue to repeat catastrophically toxic patterns, and we will blame God for it. And which sneaky little chaotic creature is best known for doing that, class? Is it not the devil himself? Hm 🤔
Well, if demons only have enough God Given Power to provoke our inner "demons...." And we are claiming to be on a Religious Path, but we are not *actually* reconciling said Traumas/hangups (aka: "demons"), then, it's as Nietsche said: "Religion, is the opiate of the masses."
I.E. It's all simply lip service; the pharisees, are on the pulpit.

You should invite Swami Sarvapriyananda of New York once to talk about eastern philosophies

Im really glad to see that people have started to notice that JP doesn't really have a firm grasp of Nietzsche.
Lacking graps for sure

No
Marx and Foucault especially hold enormous influence over the direction of academic sociology.
