I'm a truck driver and I don't have enough time to see rules, but I have time to listen to. And I have to study many languages, because I am driving over all Europe. I have to understand English, German, French, Spanish, Italian. So, I cannot study only English. But anyway thank you for your explanation. I cannot understand British Englishl, but I can understant everything you say. That's why I am listening to you. My native language is Russian.
7:59 5 tips for practice * for those who need this part* 1. Do dictations with very short audio files (just 2-3 sentences) - listen and write the keywords (stressed words) - listen again and add extra words - listen once again and try to write everything - check your answer with the script 2. Do plenty of longer listening - news, podcast, etc. - don't look up words, don't take notes, don't feel like studying. Just listen. 3. Don't expect to understand everything 4. Listen to English at least one hour a day - e.g. on your commute 10 minutes, in the gym 10 minutes, before going to bed 20 minutes, etc. 5. Stop using subtitles - subtitles make you focus on every single word, not the stressed words
I've been trying to understand every single word. That's my error. Thank you! I must accept this truth: even native speakers don't understand all the words.
Wow, I got you teacher; the stress is so important for understanding people in a conversation with us; thanks for every lesson day each day. I like It 👏👏👏👍
Thank you very much for your advice, I am Spanish and I have to admit that in my case it is difficult for me not to understand all the words, but I promise I will follow a daily routine of one hour and without subtitles. I want to improve my listening. You speak very clearly and it is easy to understand.
Thank you so much Keith for posting this video. I could very much struggle with IELTS listening. This steers me into the right direction for English listening, I reckon. I hope, except for getting familiar with all question types and test-taking techniques, but also practice listening to a wide range content, just like you mentioned podcasts, movies etc, which is good to build up listening stamina. I appreciate this video came in the right time for me.
It is a wonderful video😊! Tomorrow morning, I going to make my students watch and listen to this short lesson to improving their listening skill by listening 🎧 to a native English teacher as our class is for intonation! Teacher Kieth thank you so much indeed!
I really appreciate your clearly instruction. You use simple expression so that I can understand the video without subtitiles. What an encouragement. Sometimes I feel overwhelm when I cant get all the word in the sentence. After that the emotion makes me unable to continue listening. I end up with no things left in my mind. I will practice English using your tips. Thank you for your advice.
Keiiiiiiith, I've got a 7.5 in speaking just today! Im on cloud nine🪽😂 thank you for your fascinating teaching techniques. You've been sent from heavens🕊 just to help us in our long journey 🎉❤
I spend only 20mins per day for listening to English podcasts or videos that I'm interested in because I'm too lazy to do dictations but hard to watch a show or film without getting distracted by the storylines or the scene. I'm gonna try to listen to longer recordings in various topics from tomorrow. Thanks for your useful tips, Keith, hope it works with me
One thing I've learned about listening to any language is that: Our brains pretty much always go through both processes when listening to sth: Bottom - up and Top - down. Bottom - up means our ears catch the sounds and transfer that to our brains to match with the existing language pool we have, while Top - down is our brains filling into the gaps in the sentences for the sounds we don't hear quite clearly based on, again, our existing language pool, the chunks of sounds, rules of the language, and our experience with the context to complete the message. That really opened my eyes to a new, more biologically ideal way for me to approach Listening. I've been consistently scoring 8.5-9.0 in practice tests, and have helped my mentees improve their scores similarly.
