  • Every angler surveys the water when arriving at a fishing spot and tries to determine which color would be best, but Marsh Man Masson wanted to see if the old adages about appropriate colors for stained water are accurate, so he dropped a GoPro down and jigged an assortment of baits and colors in front of it. Some of the results surprised him!

    I'm a saltwater fisherman on the west coast and recently got into bass fishing and my local lake is dirty as hell. Fished it 5 times with all kinds of colors with no results until I tried black and blue and started slaying large mouth there ever since.

    I always just use a underspin jig with white lure in stained water. The under spin moves water around so they can feel it and it gives noise and also flashes so the fish see it better and the fish seem to always bite like crazy if there are any there.

    Great video! I'm agree %100 with you. The darker the water the darker my lure. The lighter/ clearer the water the more natural my lure. The chartreuse wasn't bad in that darker water but it needs to be right on that fishes face.

    fluorescent orange shows up really well in murky water. I did a test like this a couple years ago at a dock in the spring. mounted my underwater camera to the dock and cast lures out, reeling them toward the camera. I was testing some new lures actions, but also their paintjobs as well. a flo orange one was easily visible from the farthest out.

    • @FatJeffStew
      @FatJeffStew 5 років тому

      Oh yea, lots of colors end looking very similar with dichromatic vision.
      I usually base mine on whether the bait will reflect, thus shine (murkier water) or soak up colors thus giving it more camouflage (clear water). Then there's that middle ground of real natural colors that can be used in about all situations.

    • @excelsior1018
      @excelsior1018 5 років тому

      Not only that, but water begins to filter out the light spectrum with depth. Your lure's colors change in tone the deeper they go.

    We have a local pond of about 2 acres . The water is also always a color I call coffee with cream in it. This pond isn't fished often because the color turns people off but there are some huge bass and channel cats. There is a fair amount of redbreast sunfish and bluegills . Every bluegill and redbreast I have caught was almost completely silver without any other color. Even when the redbreast were breeding not much color. Why because silver almost disappears.

    I'm not a color guy either but I met a Team Jackson Kayak Guy Pre-Redfishing a Tournament.
    He went into a lake area that has Oysters & Grass. It's not deep at all.
    He told me the Reds were trapped in there by the thousands but they just wouldn't bite!
    So he grabbed a 4" extremely Clear (no specs, etc) see thru clear paddletail & bit the top end off & slaughtered them in a few minutes. Catching & Releasing Slot Reds, he caught 12, 25 to 27" Reds here in SE TX.

    Great information/confirmation. I agree with you general assessment too . But I did have one particular trip where the conventional wisdom went out the door. This was several years ago now; fishing the tressles throwing avocado Dudley's picking up one or 2 here and there. Came across a guy that was asses & elbows every cast. Got close enough to see the color he was throwing. It was Dudley's Purple haze (light violet top, pearl bottom). The water was nasty dirty that day, but for whatever reason, they hit that light color every cast after we switched. I will say, that that incident was the only one I ever had with reverse color scheme.

    The jig-head is what I see best in all cases. They are puter colored. I wonder if what little light hits & reflects off the bait, a solid color may do it better than a plastic w/some transparency that may absorb more light w/less reflection.
    Let me know if this makes cents.

    I generally avoid darker colors, I'm not exactly a "match the hatch" type of guy but I like lighter colors. I think darker colors are probably more visible in all water condition but our eyes (and fishes) work off light. To the eye a lighter color will reflect more light off it giving it a brighter glow or halo like effect around it.
    Dark colors do well due to the color contrast while also blocking light around it but in really dark water they blend in but nothing would work well in these conditions. I prefer light colors with a lot of shimmer (like a white pearl) or maybe even some foil baits.
    My goal is to make it brighter than everything by reflecting the most light off it. Plus most bottoms are typically a lot darker than the water as well (granted it will never touch the bottom on a popping cork). I don't feel the contrast with darker colors is bad more so than a different solution to the same problem.

    Here in our part of Australia we are having a strange year. Our ocean water is usually very clear. This year, when the tide is flowing out of the inlet, the water gets VERY stained. When the tide is flowing in to the inlet the water goes clear. Sometimes you can see a line of clear water/stained water moving in to and out of the inlet and pushing up the inlet or moving out to see.

    this stuff is always so interesting to see and talk about. if we were to apply this all to walleye fishing, the first 3 colors would most likely produce the most on a river day in and day out. same river for smallies the darker lures would be where you would start. crappie could be any color on any given day.

      @@deannelson9565 It cant be similar to our vision because of the size of the "processor " their eyes are connected to. Thats a fact I learned when I did my degree.

      @First Last I'm sure one of us did Google it because the first thing he thought of when he saw this was what do fish actually see but instead of just randomly making posts guessing about it that person may have actually gone and done some research on it! So I would suggest to mark he may want to use his larger processor and go actually do some research on it to find out that yes they do actually see the same as we do. Although it does of course Very species to species since they're all designed for different things.

    Being in Florida with a lot of stained water, I've always heard people swear by dark colored soft plastics... but I've never had more success than when I've been using chartreuse worms. It's always made me feel that silhouette, action, and profile is much more important than color.

    Good comparison. I always wondered how chartreuse would do. I would like to see how the gold blade shows up in those conditions. I use gold chatterbaits when it's like that.

    Nice one Mr, very helpful. I will be using clear or white in a lake I am fishing in Lithuania, its gin clear and I have always had luck with white. This is for Pike and Perch though not Bass. Great vids dude.

    I wish you would've dipped each lure in from the surface and measured the transparency of the water by depth at which you can't see the lure. Like a secchi disk. Then follow up with underwater camera. The advantage in distance is likely very small between lures. Let's say they all mostly disappear at 6 inches. If you cast within 6 inches of an actively feeding fish with any of these colors is there an edge to using darker colors?

    Have you ever fished with ultra-violet colors? I have not, but I'm curious how they would look, if they would make a difference at all.

    Great video Todd, thanks. Have you done a popping cork tutorial before? I saw you had the Versa Maxx cork. Love those.

      I've talked about how I use popping corks in a number of videos, but haven't really done a classic "tutorial." The Versamaxx Bolt, to me, was a game-changer. Being able to adjust depth in seconds should make everyone a much better cork fisherman.

    Great video. I would like to see this repeated when the camera isn’t being shaded. Dirty water with lots of sun. Specifically how it affects the visibility of the lemon head color. I’ve always used dark baits for low light dirty water,but switch to chartreuse when the sun is out in full force. Curious if it makes a difference.

      The thing is "dark" refers to tone , not color. Thinking in tones and how they contrast with their surroundings makes the most sense.

    what about stained water and low light conditions? or just low light conditions, regardless of water clarity? my favorite fishing spot only turns on the bite about 30 minutes before and after sunrise and most of the time the water is stained..
