    If you get the lenses for blocking the color blue, you will see that many colors appear whitish. Chartreuse has a pinkish glow to it. White, appears as white. After color can effect the "sharpness" of the colors .
    You presented this rather well, but I encourage you to look again through the lenses used for detecting color blindness

    The old saying, 10% of lures catch fish. The other 90% catch fishermen... Excellent video and simple information.

    I basically agree that the vast majority of "enterprise" in baits is to catch the fisherman. However, in my 50 years of seriously chasing bass I've had waayy too many instances where very minor color differences made huge differences in my catch. Years ago Berkley Bait Company generated a study and book written by Paul Johnson called "The Scientific Angler" and it covered some of this information. The Rod-Cone comparison has been sourced for years to attempt to explain these things. As a scuba diver I'm also familiar with the depth/color relationship. However I think there is some consideration that should be given to the fact that bass may have some additional method of color detection capability that exists outside our realm of understanding that may play a role. Add to this the variation in light penetration, water clarity, sound and movement/action and I realized color is very important, but only one element of bait choice.

      I can't disagree with you. I fished a tournament once. One day one I caught all my keepers on a green pumpkin worm. I went to the same stretch of creek arm the next day and threw to the same cyprus trees. All I could catch were short fish. I switched to a green pumpkin red flake and caught my limit to win. Was it the color? Maybe. I was fishing shallow so the bass could see red. Or it could have been timing, the tide, wind, temp, or a lot of other factors I just can't see under the water. Thats the problem with anecdotal we can't know for sure. While I think color does play a role, I think the bigger thing is type of presentation. Do the bass want a moving bait? If so, where in the water column. Do the bass want a large profile lure like a jig? Do the bass want a finesse small profile like a drop shot or ned rig?

      @@OneCastFishing I've had crazy examples... tournament, Bull Shoals, Spring... ultra gin clear water 20+ feet deep. Fella in the front of the boat was using a 4" grub, pink metalflake, clear plastic, 1/4 oz. head... loading the boat. I was using the exact same thing only there was a pink tint to the clear plastic... not a bite. Switched to what he was using and we absolutely loaded the boat. Smallmouth btw....

    I agree, but I suggest not limiting your color selection. Just because the bass can't see the color doesn't mean the that color don't appear as a different shade to the bass. What I mean is when you draw a picture you shade by using different pressures with your pencil or use different pencils like soft medium and hard leads. So it would be reasonable to assume that different colors will show lighter and darker shades. Just a thought. To get an idea of this watch some old TV shows in black and white.

    Great video! Lots of good information. Just something to add to it, as a lure maker myself. I am very interested in this information. The reason the test at the University had a bias of the RED color being hit more successfully is because they would have been working with shallow water with clear visibility, exactly the conditions needed to see the color RED. You talked about how MOST waters will not qualify for those perfect conditions which is why colors such as "Junebug" Black/Blue and "Green Pumpkin" Green/Yellow are "go to" and successful colors in most situations at any body of water, due to their ability to stay visible to the Bass. Cheers, wish more fishing channels made educated videos on stuff like this or even things like "hook up ratios" and what that actually means and how it can be quantified or how much water distribution/vibration a lure can create makes a difference to catching more fish. Maybe some more video ideas for you there! 😉

    Excellent job....this study has played hard on my mind....I've read it and you nailed it on all sides, that is what we know from pros fishing often flys in face of science say on white, chartruse and fact red disappears first under water, yet the red hook theories or red hard baits in spring side with science. Its crazy puzzle i been trying to solve in my head for years.

    I agree with you completely on colors, however I think the actions of baits is more key. Vibration matters alot, more than color really. That probably explains why most RED baits have rattles or some erratic movements.. Great Video.

    Its what the fish have been trained or used-to attacking/eating ... So finding out the local bait fish is key, since thats what they are basically raised/trained to eat, so even if they don't see whites/chartruse as well as reds or greens, IF they have been raised on bait fish that shine and shimmer white and chartruse, then they'll be more predisposed to attack that color. Tho maybe throwing a bait with a green trailer and chartruse or white skirt would be ideal for that scenario. Fish can also see further that humans in water too so the visibility might be different. Really intersting vid for sure !!

    Only reason I'm not buying this completely is because smallmouth and n largemouth red to prefer totally different colors. I do much better with largemouth with greens, browns, yellows, more natural stuff. Smallmouth I always do better with pink, purple, florescent blue more loud colors. So they may but we the colors the same way we do but color DEFINITELY makes a larger difference than this video would lead you to believe.

    Based entirely on over 40 years of first hand experience fishing for largemouth bass smallmouth bass steelhead salmon and trout fish's willingness to strike an artificial luer is absolutely positively no doubt in my mind whatsoever influenced strongly by not just color of a artificial luer but tge sjze of it
    Lost track of how many times my fishing partner is using literally the same exact luer as I same exact rod reel pound test mono and hes catching 3 to 4 times more fish than I or vise versa and the ONLY differences are the color of the luer and sometimes the size as well.
    Seen this fishing for smallmouth and walleye many times
    Once fishing for smallmouth in a river at a damn the smallies wanted a #9 Rapala sinking in black and silver I was using a size #11 same luer my buddy was literally catching a bass every 4th or 5th cast I caught ONE bass
    We switched setups I started immediately catching bass I switched to a #9 blk/slvr Rapala I immediately began catching bass
    Unfortunately I hooked a big northern pike and he bit off my only #9 blk/slvr minnow I switched to tge same #9 sinking except it was in golden roach color again friend out fished me and I never did catch a bass with that luer.
    No way you can not agree both luer color and size were of vital importance that day

    • @OneCastFishing
      @OneCastFishing  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for sharing. I don’t think it’s a scandal and people are missing the point. Think about it, fish are small and have small brains. Almost everyone accepts deep don’t see color which is why we wear bright orange when hunting. Why can’t we accept a small fish isn’t going to seek color the same way we do. Bass can see some colors and the rest are probably shades or white and dark. So color plays a role, but not how we think it does.

    I’ve always know colors was a marketing scam. I buy different colors anyway because I’m a tackle junkie, I think they look cool. Besides a lot of lures in general are over played, I’ve seen videos of bass hitting blocks off wood, that being said the mechanics and design of a lure is what I pay for it floats, it dives deep, it dives shallow it spits water to attract bass those kind of things

    I don’t think bass are color blind. They might not be able to see as in detail as us humans. But that doesn’t necessarily make them color blind per say. They most likely can see colors and textures pretty well. Although they do hunt a lot through vibration etc. as a way of seeking food they still are a heavy visual predator that need to see to eat. Again they might not be able to see as well as humans(not even 100% sure about that their vision could be just as good if not better especially in water) but we don’t call ourselves nose blind even tho compared to almost every other animal we have a terrible sense of smell. So again I don’t quite believe this theory, but it’s an interesting concept as a way of looking at how bass perceive color

    • @OneCastFishing
      @OneCastFishing  3 роки тому +1

      So you’re right in the sense they aren’t color blind compared to other bass. It’s just how they are made. If humans naturally had dichromatic vision then dichromatic color blind people wouldn’t be classified as color blind. The point is Bass don’t see color the same way we do, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t one of their senses. They also use their lateral lines and vibrations. No way am I saying color doesn’t matter, it just might not as much as we make it out to. A lot of other factors come into play such as speed, vibration, bait shape and profile, etc.

    I will do a lower study for about four months, and I literally keep a few bright colors with chartreuse all white with a little bit of blue and black back in exactly like a man just stated , you know a Bess is an aggressive fish. He like to eat the best thing you could do for bass fishing is the silhouette that’s what they chase is a silhouette that’s what they hit on the top of the waters if I could explain it better I would I’m one of them people I’m very intelligent I can do it. I can’t explain it, but like the other man said, with the comments of different shades of pencil is the same difference of allure they look at the silhouette and that’s what they go after modify any of your best crank baits or spinner baits, and watch what happens through black all day watch what happens the darker, the silhouette, the scary it looks, that’s why a lot of smaller presentations work in certain areas. The only guarantee that any bass fisherman’s gonna catch a fish isn’t a hungry pond a hungry river., and site fission the same reason you catch big fish on a wacky worm

    Hummm, It's always bothered me that a proven fact is that Bass ALWAYS have better visibility of a dark colored bait against a light background and a light colored bait against a dark background and yet when we thread our two toned plastics we always do the REVERSE of what is BEST in regards their visibility??? Nature/our creator gave bait fish their best protection to AVOID against being mauled in their color scheme and yet, we mimic that very same color scheme when we're trying to catch the prey we seek! Think about it, how does this make any sense???? I got to believe that we'd have more success if we would change this mentality. What could be more appealing to a predator then a distressed upside down bait fish?

  • @KAYSBRANCH

    Doug Hannon stated in 1985 that it has been biologically determined that a Bass eyes have the same rod/cone set up as humans. So the capability of color vision exists. However, humans do suffer from color blindness. Until we can ask a Bass if he or she can see color, I'm going to lean toward the side of yes, they can see color, but it doesn't matter to them. They attack an object.
