Contrast and the silhouette of a bait up against a background or bottom is the key to make a lure stand out everything Brian said in this video is very important and should be practiced because your bait could be the perfect size action and speed but if a fish can't see or pinpoint the lure they can't hit it the better a fish can see a bait the bigger and further the strike zone becomes.
Hey B. Lat you should look into using a Secchi disk to objectively measure water clarity. I find that one persons idea of "muddy" water can be different from another person's depending on the different fisheries they frequent. Using a Secchi disk is a helpful scientific approach to measuring clarity and it has helped me find patterns and record data in my logbook. Making one at home is pretty easy with an 8in grinder disk, white spray paint and a long measuring tape.

One thing that I think is worth consideration too with regards to contrast is what perspective does the fish have to the bait. Example I always use is Strike King’s green gizzard Shad. Looking down or perhaps sideways it is green gizzard. Look up to the bait on a bright sky and it is PINK.

Iv only recently taken an interest in bass fishing. Standing in the bait shop in front of a rainbow of lures is a bit intimidating. Especially at 3-20 dollar price points. Its hard to know if your just wasting money for a certain color of bait until you catch or don't catch fish with them. This was a very helpful vid

Lol. I was just thinking this exact thing. ...I concluded that I never want a bass to actually " See" my bait unless I'm bed fishing. I want the bass to not have a chance to think about it.

Here to learn about steelhead eyes as well. Never really thought about red turning so dark in deep water before. Definitely useful to know for winter steelhead.

Well pink does mimic an earthworm sort of but your right crazy how a bass will eat something out of the ordinary

Mid August, heat waves for last 2 weeks in SoCal. Dark and stained waters in my urban creek. White spinnerbaits, purple worms, and Zoom worms in methiolate working. Still learning about color selection.
Junebug is the best new color I've used. Great dark contrast and the green flake looks like fish scales.

I find gold flake to really work out for me. There's a company in Florida called (Bitters)and every time I go fishing I have to use their swim bait called "the naked swimmer" not trying to be weird or anything that's just what its called lol. I highly recommend everyone use that bait at least once in life and I swear u will not be disappointed. I live in Texas now and I'm definitely glad they ship anywhere. Good luck guys.

Just wondering if 6 years later…has this information changed? Im a custom lure artist, and I can catch fishermen, or I can paint to catch fish. So much different information out today. I am pretty confident in white and chartreuse look the same to a bass. Thanks B. Lat great video!

Color contrast is one thing, good lure action is another and without it no lure will produce. Color IMO enhances lure action and is complementary to it making a lure more 'interesting', evoking curiosity. The lures shown each have unique actions and the colors allow visual detection under different light intensities, but the lateral line is still crucial in motion detection along with visual stimuli
starting the sequence of detect-observe-attack.

Brian, this video is by far the best and most useful I've ever seen on color for bass fishing. Now blue worms make more sense to me. I fish 3 local lakes with very different water clarity from 1 foot max on one lake, 2 to 3 ft on another, and 6 to 8 ft on the 3rd. Come springtime and I will definitely be trying to use what you explained. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

awesome video, I was glad you threw the trout/ salmon bit in there, they are very particular in color based on clouds/ sun, dry flies and submerged and size of them. Contrast is a key role in catching trout, as you wouldn't throw a bleach white dry fly on a white cloud day because it blends in with the clouds, however a black dry contrasted against white skies gives off a good silhouette. awesome video

Other than shades of gray, bass only see red and green. The physics of light under water, as applied to bass fishing, only apply to light dark, and red and green. This was discovered in the 1930's.
The light an water works as a team on vibrant colors too but silver based with a lite pink pastel are my favorites. I like to watch shads school together in the evening when the sun is about to set. Big bass come in like troops an find there prey.

Great video man, now I can kind of see how the conditions of the area that you fish dictates in a way the colours and approaches that we take, and this will help me heaps because the dam that I usually fish has a lot of varied depths and water clarity, and if you find the time you should look into coming to Australia to catch some hella big fish 🤙🏻
