Some days you have it and others you don't. It was a beautiful day and Chris and I (Riley) headed back to an old favourite trail. Just for giggles we turned right instead of left. This brought us to a long wicked downhill section. Rocks with a side order of more rocks. Once we started we were committed as there was no way back. I wasn't really on my game and was overly cautious on the descent. Had a few spills and bent my shifter as well. We grabbed some breakfast and headed back out. I found my mojo again and we did rocky climb after rocky climb. A branch snapped and locked the front wheel of my F800Gs. Came to a sudden stop to discover my front fender had a big hole in it. Bike and body were fine so w e carried on. The day ended on a high note with some great riding. - Авто та транспорт
People never realize how exhausting it is to muscle a bike up and down tricky terrain. I can't imagine how beat you must have been toward the end of this day.
One of the reasons I bought the 701. As we got more aggressive the 800 just seemed too big for me.

Real life is scary. We all need an escape with some friends. I hear the KLR is getting fuel injection?
more than scary !! The older I get the scarier (sign of old age, self doubt, lack of confidence and general breakdown of physical and mental competence :) )

(although many succeed and are actually convinced of their own knowledge)
I love the smell of un-burnt petrol at 4.30am in the morning ! Choke/enrichener washing all the dirty stuff out of the cylinder ! (straight into the sump !)
Neighbours ringing emergency services fearing a chemical spill !
Dogs howling, children crying, sirens, fire trucks etc...... bet you don't get that with your rotten fuel injection ?????
Fuel should go into the engine the same way it goes into your tank..... through a big pipe !!!!

Don't beat yourself up to much. I have taken to the trails with very little I my gas tank and felt very weak and uncoordinated. It happens to the best of us when we get excited to do some trail riding early in the new year.

Some days ago I rode about one kilometer next to the street. I just wanted to test, if I feel comfortable with riding my F650 GS offroad.

The heavier bikes can suck the energy out of you pretty quick. As your technique gets better you do use a lot less effort. When we take someone out for their first time on dirt on a big bike they are frequently exhausted in the first hour.

Love it. Some investment in Cardio for all of us would be wise. At the Fundy Rally I dropped the big GS because I was too tired to fight with it on a sloped part of the trail.

you should also use rear brake down hills, i know you said you'd stall it but just gently apply pressure.. Don't know if you are new to riding but it does help when going down steep hills to slow it down more.
These hills were so loose and steep that the weight of my boot was locking the rear wheel. As long as the clutch is out you are in gear the engine is also braking the rear wheel. Most people are really afraid of front brake on downhills but but without it you can't really generate much stopping power.
I just crashed with my F650GS Dakar. The rear slipped away within a corner. Sadly my front tire bend as I slipped into a VW Bully :'(

Grass means, fun trail not used. But I ride a smaller bike...hahaha So looking for the less traveled trails is always a goal.
I felt the nerves on that first section, know just that feeling when your mojo isn't working and your riding mate's is.
Even worse if he is 10 plus years younger, six inches taller and in good shape!

When you get tuckered out like that and cannot seem to gain any energy back, the wise thing usually is to take a short break and hydrate. Seen folks not realize they were dehydrated and down a liter of water in a couple minutes.
Exactly. I think in this case it was poor preparation in not having a decent breakfast!
We've all had those days and, yah, I've been down things that I just don't think I can get up ... until I HAVE to get up. BUT, that second and especially the third hill ... hooo boy. You ain't getting up that. By the way, "A long winter of drinking and eating chips" sounds like a great song title! (Thanks for the new vid!)

Nah. The more out of shape you are the easier it to have adventure. If you are fit and well rested you would have to do something extreme.
hahaa!!! My pot belly and I will remember that. The snow is rapidly melting and mud season is fast upon us. The Mighty DR is ready for an oil change and some fresh tires and a good ol' summer flogging!
Nice vid. You know Riley, I do run a pool & gym on the east coast. You should check one out in your area. Usually stamina is something you have to build, doesn't come naturally.
I should get off my ass. Weakest link in my riding is certainly me.

Hi Owen. We are still around. I really liked the D606 out front. Out back I used the Mitas E09 Dakar. The Dunlop D908 is a great big bike back tire as well. A lot more options around now. Many like the Motoz stuff.
What model neck braces are you guys using? they look great......safe
We are using Leatt braces. Not sure which models. We both bought used.
Going slow, in first, down hill, took me out last summer. Went slow over smooth, sand covered, ledge, in first. Bike stalled, and my rear wheel locked up, and skidded out. Bike ended up laying tank down hill. I was glad my riding buddy was along to help get the KLR up again. It all happened in a split second. I don't even remember the fall.
I've had a few where the bike just started going and I bailed. Much prefer uphill!
I like it that the 690 got a high fender from the beginning. If not, i thing i would have changed it. What about the 701 Riley?
701 has a high fender. I'm going back to that trail this year and try again!

Any advice for remounting without putting the kickstand back down?
I sometimes do the hop. Kind of stand on one leg and kick the other over the seat. Henrik has learned a cool trick where you stand on the left of the bike and put your left foot on the peg. You then start to ride off and once the bike is moving you swing your leg over. Looks cool.
Even your difficult days look like fun.

Riley, I am interested in your opinion on ADV boots. I recently purchased a "cheap-o" brand quickly realized my mistake. I am returning them today. I understand that the more protection it provides, the less comfortable it is going to be. Any suggestions?
Actually the the really good MX boots are more comfortable. Look at the Sidi Crossfires. They were too pricey for me but Chris swears by them as do many others. The upscale boot isn't just a plastic sleeve. You get hinges and such so articulation is much better. I have the Tech 7s (I think) by Alpinestar that I got on sale and they nice.
Thanks for your input, I finally decided on Adventure Boots by Forma. I must say they are surprisingly comfortable when compared to other boots. I can actually walk around in them for a short time AND they also offer more protection than say a BILT adventure boot. They were also moderately priced which was nice!

Actually it was solid. I had my boot on the bike and since I weigh well on the other side of 200lbs, it just looked soft. I don't mind if they bend as long as they don't snap when you straighten them. The cast pedals on some other BMWs like the X-Challenge are one time only and cost 200$!

Awesome Players I was always under the impression that BMW parts were super expensive. That sounds rather fair and reasonable.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason too the pricing. Most parts aren't cheap but every once in a while the price is decent. Of course if we order the parts from the US these days we have to add a 30% premium for the low Canadian dollar.
When I see you Guys riding in that type of wildness, it always makes me wander if you ever had any problems with big Animals? I don't mean Henrik, but some puma, polar/brown/grizzly bear, moose etc? Are you carring any firearms with you?

Not much to be afraid where we usually ride. Might be a black bear or two around. They just run away. In western Canada they have Grizzly bears which can be more aggressive.

Was in Vegas last year but no bike. Looked like a lot of good riding spots.
Most estimates put calorie burn around 250 per hour for that kind of riding. If you are regularly picking up the bike it is even more. Your bike needs fuel, and so do you!
I would be in shape if I could get out 2 or 3 times a week.

Henrik was really busy with house and home at the time the video was shot. Good news is that he is back with a brand new bike.
Perfect "First World Problem" video: peaceful (no war, no pollution, politically and economically stable country), temperate climate (not Saharan nor sub-Saharan), smooth running BMW, no injuries, and not far from superb medical facilities BUT the rider doesn't feel like motorbiking.
Where is the grand master Heinrich these days? He rounds out the crew so well.

@@mountainridersdarjeeling9745 It is kind of a joke in our crew that the HP2 isn't very well taken care of. It is also way louder mechanically than a 1200GS for sure. We did a valve adjustment last fall and it is noticeably quieter.

Taking the F800 gs on this trail better not get your batterie go flat or other breakdown. No way to take it back track
The 800 series have been very reliable. Way more issues with DR650s and other supposedly simpler machines over the years.

Oh, and thanks for the stickers! Next week when I get my bike from winter storage I will hold a red carpet event of biblical grandeur as I place one of the stickers on my GS. It's going to be far bigger than Trumps inauguration. (So the bar is set at suitably moderate level.)

It really does. I'm always so excited to he see the footage from some epic hill and it looks like we are riding the prairies.
It took us about four hours to get up about 800 metres of track, looks like a normal fire trail in the video.
You need water and a raft to get down that not a BMW
You sounded exhausted! That's why you shouldn't have the mike in your helmet, so people don't realize how badly out of shape you are... Not that I ever think about stuff like that... ;)
The winter training of Costco mega snacks takes its toll!
On some level it's reassuring, it shows that off road motorcycling is actually working you hard and is good for you. We're all certainly more fit at the end of the season than at the begining!
