Agreed, and unfortunately underutilized in the voice acting industry. A perfect example of his prowess is his role of Alarak in Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void.
Me too! He has the perfect voice to play a strong, commanding character like Q. It would have been nice to see Q in more Star Trek episodes, but for the ones he has been in, they are very memorable.
7 years later i see this. This man embodied a character for 9 total episodes in all of Star Trek and has become a legend for it. The simple fact that the he was in the FIRST episode and LAST episode of Generations is pure writing brilliance.
I think it has a lot to do with the way delancie played Q..I don't know if any other actor could have made Q so memorable and special. I used to love when a Q episode came on t.v back when we didn't have Hulu and even DVDs so you watched t.v and you got the episode that you got.
Great guy! Very thoughtful. Met him at a Star Trek Convention. He called his agent and delayed his flight so he could get through all the autographs and meeting the fans. He signed my action figure which I really appreciated.
He was very nice to me when I met him in 2013 at a con here in Houston. He asked what I did for a living. When I told him I was at the time training to become a teacher, he came around the table to shake my hand and did a one armed hug. He was very encouraging of my decision to become a teacher, and we chatted for a while about reading and The Raven. I became an English teacher three months later.
You can just tell by looking into his eyes during this interview that he's a very kind man. People like Jon de Lancie exist to give cynics like me hope for humanity. I'm glad you pursued your dreams. Teaching is a hard profession, and it grows ever more difficult as time goes on and teachers are disempowered while students parents are empowered in ever increasingly irrational ways. Let me express that while it may not be apparent at the time, you can and do make your mark on those few students who do care. Even now, I remember those few teachers who had a passion and they made an impact on my life. It's worth the struggle. And thanks for doing it,
Don't forget the comment he made to Riker, when he said "You weren't like this before the beard". That was when he got his powers back, and gave Data the gift if laughter for a few seconds.
Q is easily one of the most memorable characters in TNG, especially given he was only in 9 episodes. Easily one of the top 5 antagonists in all of Star Trek (and pretty darn close to Khan, Gul Dukat, etc)
Antagonist? I wouldn’t go that far. Definitely a trickster, maybe a grey character, but not an antagonist. If it wasn’t for him, the Borg would have had four centuries or more to conquer the galaxy before falling upon the slightly more powerful Federation. It would have been a bloodbath for the humans. Think about it - Q made it so humans faced the Borg early enough that humanity and Starfleet had a chance to win. Add to that the fact the crew of the Enterprise even learned how to counter the Q to an extent by tuning their sensors to his type of energy source and hold him at bay a little, how Picard was being shown different forms of exploration thanks to Q, and even got to learn about the nigh omnipotent species, and it doesn’t seem like Q was an antagonist. It’s almost like Q was the hero of his own story, sometimes crossing paths with the Enterprise and going on a journey. Sometimes it involved the Enterprise directly, sometimes it was happenstance. I never saw malevolence in Q, maybe a slightly sinister curiosity but more often he came across as an annoying and powerful friend. Most importantly to me, Q was rarely wrong. You had to listen to what was inferred rather than said to hear otherwise. Or was it the other way around...guess I have an excuse to binge watch the series again!
This guy's talent made the Q character way bigger than they probably intended. I read one of the novels with Q as the main antagonist and I could hear his voice as I read Q's lines.
I ran into Q on a Carnival cruise ship in the early summer of 1996. I had just graduated from high school and was there with my family. Im a huge Trek fan but I had no idea that John De Lancie, Roxann Dawson, Garrett Wang, and Tim Russ were on the ship. One evening we were walking up a huge flight of stairs and John De Lancie was coming down the same flight with his family. I literally almost ran right into him and stopped about 3-5 feet in front of him in amazement and said, "Q???" I mean I couldn't believe it. Then later in the trip I worked out with Tuvok (Tim Russ) and ate lunch at a restaurant with Harry Kim (Garret Wang) after the cruise after disembarking.
There were so many great actors that played their roles perfectly in the Next Generation. I've watched the entire series something like 10 times. I think I will watch it again. It never gets old. And yes, All Good Things is one of the greatest series finales of all time.... Perhaps even the greatest.... Discovering the unknown possibilities of existence...
He won't die... he's omnipotent and lives forever in our memories as the great Q... Didn't knew he was 66 years old by now... time flies by... He could play for a Gandalf with his looks now (and still have magical powers, just like the Q)

Just like when it was on TV, DS9 too, dumb idea. You want them travelling or there is no point, a station with almost the same stories every time. It all went down after Voyager for me.
Fantastic actor. I'm surprised that he was in only 9 episodes. I thought that he had appeared in more episodes of TNG. I liked his banter with Picard, but I loved his relationship with Janeway on Voyager.
Agreed, Q is awesome. Hope he shows up again at some point would be so badass if John played him in a movie or new show and they just did some CGI or something or write in "aged Q" trying a new look or something lol

I love John Delancie .I first saw in one soap opera as Eugene Bradford. He is a great actor and as Q he made that character come to life and that is why I love the character. When he and Picard were in a scene it was magic to me. It was different when he was with Sisko and Janeway. He had to play it a little different with them than Picard.
I hope Q is brought into Picard. So many past Star Trek characters played by their original actors. I grew up with TNG and VOY and the 90s TNG films so I'm excited to see them return!
If you count "Encounter at Farpoint" and "All Good Things" as one episode each, he was in eight TNG episodes. Not only did I immediately think that five was way too few, I could remember six of them right off the top of my head.
He has such a huge fan base for appearing in only a handful of episodes. Kind of like Anthony Hopkins winning the Oscar for Silence of the Lambs, but appeared only 18 minutes in the entire movie.
He looks very, very comfortable and in fact plain happy to answer these questions and have civil conversation. Great interview, hate interviews where the person being interviewed feels so awful to be there..
I always loved the snide little remarks he would make as Q, like when he appeared on the bridge of the Enterprise, naked, floating, and then he says "Red Alert!". Or when he was talking to Sisko and made everyone else in Quark's disappear, he said "All Gone!". lol
My favourite are Q, Odo, Garek, Query & Guinnan, not sure about the spelling of the last 2. I wish Q had more episodes he was fun to watch & John DeLancie looks as he was having so much fun.
Q popping up with a Mariachi band and dancing while playing his trumpet one-handed was my favorite.

Gerd H. Agreed.
Gerd H. I love John de Lancie.
Is there anywhere to find the series he mentions? "some people say" I'dlove to watch but cant seem to find it :(
I love John Delancie .I first saw in one soap opera as Eugene Bradford. He is a great actor and as Q he made that character come to life and that is why I love the character. When he and Picard were in a scene it was magic to me. It was different when he was with Sisko and Janeway. He had to play it a little different with them than Picard.
John De Lancie was in 12 episodes of Star Trek, 1 in DS9, 3 in Voyager and 8 in the next generation
The trial never ends
I hope Q is brought into Picard. So many past Star Trek characters played by their original actors. I grew up with TNG and VOY and the 90s TNG films so I'm excited to see them return!
He was was so great as Q. Never bored rewatch long himbrile Picard
Love ya John. You’re one of the best.
Saw John De Lancie at the Convention in Brisbane, he was a great speaker with a lot of funny stories, both from TNG and Days of our lives.
NYC construction worker ; love John De Lancie for his work as Q, Alarak and more
If you count "Encounter at Farpoint" and "All Good Things" as one episode each, he was in eight TNG episodes. Not only did I immediately think that five was way too few, I could remember six of them right off the top of my head.
Isn't it awesome that is trekkies can do that? We got awesome memory 👍
He has such a huge fan base for appearing in only a handful of episodes. Kind of like Anthony Hopkins winning the Oscar for Silence of the Lambs, but appeared only 18 minutes in the entire movie.
18 minutes? No kidding, wow.
@@jayneneewing2369 That's almost impossible for me to believe!
He looks very, very comfortable and in fact plain happy to answer these questions and have civil conversation. Great interview, hate interviews where the person being interviewed feels so awful to be there..
They really need to make a movie about Q
Loved him on SG1 as well.
He seems like a very sweet man. God bless him.
What a nice man. He seems very happy.
He would of been my favorite teacher in school if that had ever happened.
He did 8 episodes for TNG. That's probably why they are disputing his number
Q THE BEST HOPE HE APPEARS ON THE NEW SERIES
yesssss
I always loved the snide little remarks he would make as Q, like when he appeared on the bridge of the Enterprise, naked, floating, and then he says "Red Alert!". Or when he was talking to Sisko and made everyone else in Quark's disappear, he said "All Gone!". lol
4:04 "I agree, of the 3 captains I worked with, his was the most.....human......"
My favourite are Q, Odo, Garek, Query & Guinnan, not sure about the spelling of the last 2. I wish Q had more episodes he was fun to watch & John DeLancie looks as he was having so much fun.
I have John De Lancie ever since I saw him play Eugene in Days of Our Lives. :)
Fabulous Actor, he seems well grounded.
I bet he had a blast playing Q. I've had a blast watching him as Q.
I remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica and I heard this voice and I said that is Q
