#LondonGrammar #CalifornianSoil
So grateful that Hannah decided not to quit music two years back and instead wrote this song and then the guys convinced her to continue through with California Soil. I love London Grammar, Hannah's writing and her voice. There is a certain energy that comes from their music that is unlike anything else.
What happened?
@@Karriebear78 They were going through a lot of stress as a band with touring and such and Hannah had a long history of stage anxiety(she's long overcome it now). You might've noticed sometimes in her earlier concerts she would wear sunglasses and would appear nervous when singing.
@@Karriebear78 she was also not treated well in the music world due to misogyny, they asked things for the men in the band and not for her, always ignoring her opinion, as if she was not important

She's a channel ,
Such beautiful words
The most underrated band in the U.K. they are outstanding!!
Yeah it's a shame they are not appreciated at all. They don't even have a song on Spotify that's been listened more than a billion times. I agree it's a total failure, hope they'll find some career that better suits them.
@@LordBokito Right?! So unappreciated. Can't believe that they're still stuck only playing to tiny crowds in little dive bars like Wembley Stadium
I think Arthur Beatrice shares that spot too!
@@stoob0t 🤣🤣🤣
I wouldn't say they're underrated but you're right they do produce outstanding music
Im a metal head, always have been, always will be. But us metal heads aren't closed off to all kinds of beautiful music. I happened across their song 'strong' years ago and it moved me profoundly. Since then I've been a big fan of London Grammar and own all their albums. Im pretty much convinced that Hannah is an actual angel put on this earth to move people. It would be a dream come true to see them play live someday. ❤
I went to see Coldplay in London because London grammar where support
As an American I wish that LG was as big across the pond as they are in my mind. No one can take that from me.
There aren’t many song that make you stop, and think inward and out. This is just, powerfully angelic. The whole album is an absolute marvel, and then to close on this masterpiece is epic.
Right on david. xqcL
There are plenty, actually. If you know where to look.
Beautiful song, it's a shame some of the lyrics fall a bit flat for me.
It is a gem!!
What does 'powerfully angelic' mean?
I wish this voice could make people stop chasing America. I have been there sevral times, there is a strange mixture of beauty and dread over there, the pity is that the spectators from everywhere else on this planet is tainted by mass media over decades. Tainted in a contradicting way. I remember, back in the days, when I was a fairly "young" man, they wanted me to run a bookstore in Texas. I was flattered by the concept. But I asked myself;could I really find a home in America? America is a lot of things and ideas, just ask Laurie Anderson, she knows, she's lived there. But it is amazingly beautiful that a new band like London Grammar can make people reflect on what America actually is and means. This is a top 10 song for me in 2021, beauty and wisdom, thank you guys! I stayed in Norway, little America, as I call it today...I can only hope.
the guitarsound is brilliant, the refrain... perfect voice. this song is a masterpeace
Its very Bush.
💯
"This song is about my journey letting go of the past and learning how to write music after a difficult time with my health. I use the idea of the American dream to wave goodbye to things I didn’t need anymore"
This music is a resilience sent by the angels👏🏼
For the band: Despite your analogy of your youthful dreams to American dreams, the lyrics are a huge turnoff to me, an American. Both of my parents were born in 2 different European countries. They immigrated to America (separately) for a better life (not to become famous & in the Big Lights like your own dream). The American dream isn't "youthful popularity, good looks, wealth & celebrity" any more than it is a dream for kids in any other country. You're watching too much TV and hanging out with too many entertainers to get such a skewed... a very wrong impression & then vocalizing it to millions of people. The American dream is "freedom from oppression, and the dream to have an OPPORTUNITY to have a job & work hard, keep their noses clean and, therefore, have a comfortable (perhaps even more so) life" (and winning the Lottery might fit into a few dreams). Shall I write lyrics about England?... darn... such a Horrible and Tainted history of imperialism and aristocratic elitism... more so than almost any other country... what a crucifying song that would be to YOUR country. I can think of bad things about any country's singers & citizens that chooses to lash out at others. Such an insult... shows your character. btw... I have been able to live the American Dream... the daughter of immigrants without the help of any special privileges... having a Wonderful life for more than 6 decades thanks to hard work and Opportunities. Thankfully, we're far away from Hollywood. Perhaps you should take your video-making to other parts of the world where, maybe, you won't be so insulting. Not interested in your 'product' after this song.
😁😂🤣
@@bjbb5164thank you! I wondered if I was the only one wondering this? I’m also a son of two immigrants and my parents came here from a shitty place that was declining and wanted more for their family. I am proudly American, and I am proudly living the American dream. Yes things can always get better, the government sucks and is corrupt, the schools churn out ignorant activists that hate the country whose nest they safely lash out from.
Something about this song strikes me to be about the music industry. Maybe the American music industry. Maybe she’s talking about never having a home here as in her music never gained traction here? Or maybe wasn’t what the labels here wanted? Maybe her American dream was to make it big here but couldn’t or didn’t want to compete with the likes of Nicky Minaj or Cardi B or whatever to make it.
Yes I feel slighted and I’m defensive about my home, but I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. They could also just be salty Brit’s still feeling the sting of American independence 🤷♂️
i wonder if Americans understand what she's actually inferring with these lyrics and the art direction of the visuals. Probably not. Genius song.
Song is beautiful
Tips me into tears every time, thinking about my dear wife who died 2
years ago. No real connection with the lyrics just her beautiful way of
looking at life strikes a chord.
may her soul rest in peace Nigel, ts crazy how music connects with our souls here i am fantasizing of one day going to America 😀😀😀 thank God for hannah
Each time I listen to London Grammar songs, same feeling : cooling off, serenity and hope. Thank you. Greetings from France.
Same here bro. They give me hope been there since If you wait .from USA
@@jaystevenson7232 This is the perfect song for you then, isn't it ?.. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

Oui sa voi n est pas parfaite se qui la rend si parfaite si atypique. Le parfait a toujours un ptit défaut
this song makes me cry. Don't know your meaning behind these lyrics. But i feel this way being a New York native. Just don't really feel I have a place..
Same here. NY too
They refresh the parts that other bands cannot reach.
Seriously, they are responsible for at least five of the best songs written this century.
Quelle intensité, ce groupe me transporte❤
Love this band … her voice is intoxicating
This song is amazing and has nothing to do with America... To me it talks about realising you were somewhere where you backed up and gave 100% of yourself to something or someone on everything and slowly forgot about yourself. Suddenly you realise all the effort, all that dream chase was nothing because "America" had nothing to offer you and the dream was never meant to be real... It's about finding your inner self again and learn to appreciate you as you are in the place where you are... Letting go of what was preventing you from doing that, letting go of the past a live your present because you're only on this life for a brief moment
PURE GOLD! Nothing less than that! Do you understand that this band puts their SOULS in the music they create.
Jesus, how I miss such a quality music these days!
I saw London Grammer at the Wiltern Theater a number of years ago in LA and ever since, when I play their songs I am transported to a place that I never want to leave. America is an instant classic and it joins so many of their other creations as so memorable.
I had never heard of this song, and I had never heard of the band even, before last night, when I fell asleep with the radio on in the background, and when I awoke, it was an entirely different programme, and as I really woke up, this was playing, so I literally Googled the verse I remembered.
Amazing that I should come across it like that, because it appears, like some other people, it speaks to me of my youth, and the dreams of the career path I had.
I put in the time and effort, perhaps too much at times, but the dream didn't come true.
That's not always a bad thing. I learned some valuable lessons in life.
So, I did some reminiscing whilst listening to this.
You do that when you get older.
Im from 85, I've heard everything from ever since... But let me tell you, London Grammar is a divine Gift to whom knows to hear and feel music within their soul.
LOVE this song. Almost as much as 'Talking'.
This entire album is gold.
I adore Hannah's voice. What a voice, rich yet tender. And such lovely guitar fills to accompany it in this particular song :)
She's perfect
insane track, as someone who lived there for 2 decades and left I can wear these lyrics on
I love a woman. We were best friends for a long time. She came to America from Eastern Europe. Beautiful soul and wonder woman. She always knew what she wanted here. There was nothing and Noone who could change it. Not even me. I am happy for her and proud everyday she strives to her dream. But this song sums up how I feel deeply. Hannah's writing means a lot to me.
Like she feels "America" does have a home for her, which you don't share? Well I'm afraid it's naïve to expect that from a political system - any of them. But it's just like Orwell said, all things being equally bad, some are "more equal" in that sense as well🤔🤔🤔. Like comparing two chronical patients: both are ill, both chronical - but one is capable of working and supporting his family while the other bedridden and barely supporting life in his own body...
Wow... As with a few other London Grammar songs, this one grabs you and doesn't let go! The melody is captivating, and Hannah's voice is irresistible.
Hanah + Aurora, what a duo
that would be!! Love them both (their voices and how they use it)
This is ‘The’ song of the album imo. It’s what Strong and Oh Woman Oh Man were to their respective albums.
Congratulations London grammar on a third album my signed copies of each are unopened, to be re discovered in years to come.
I hope that you come to Ireland again
Agree with your choice of "America " as the best track of this album. But not the other Two . "If you wait " for me from the first album, and " what a day" from the Sophomore album
I think, Hell to the liars was the most power thing of last album) But the entire album was awesome of course, just like this one)
@@ivanshilenko7753 Personally I didn't think the last album was that strong. Very good but no more for me. . This album is superb as was the debut album.
@@keithbate9405 I'm still a little it MEH about this one. The first two, however...wow. I still can't get enough of them.
@@420WILD I love the new album .
Same with the stunning debut album. But the Sophomore didn't have as many ultra strong tracks as the first and third .
Hannah is striking. There’s an underlying angst, it’s like the first time she’s revealed a part of herself to her audience. Beautiful yet disconcerting.
People doesn’t understand how this group is an art of beauty
Thank You London Grammar.. Don't know what to say else...
Love this track on the album. This video, not only stunning, it also brings home the message of the song. Utterly stunning!
I would compare the band to Mazzy star. Sensitive music, a voice, that is just something else, a great sense for melodies. Wonderful.
This song is veru beautiful but now america it's lost god bless america and also kamala harrys !!!
She shoud be the one!! I kried for you love yourselfs peace!!!
You could write an entire movie just to set this song in, it’s so full of story, landscape and feeling.
Beautiful song, London Grammar hits the nail on the head...America is a forced & failed dream for the majority that work hard but won't lose their soul or sell their grandmother for $dollars$ to become uncaring, callous or insidious towards fellow Americans...the have's & the have-not's have never been farther apart. London Grammar is willing to give the middle finger in protest to 'The American Dream for the few not the many'...brave sentiment! American Capitalism worships the $dollars$ not the people who make the things that make the dollars for the wealthy. America is a Pyramid Scheme.
Whilst you may well be right, Hannah Reid's only published comment about writing this song is: "This song is about my journey letting go of the past and learning how to write music after a difficult time with my health. I use the idea of the American dream to wave goodbye to things I didn’t need anymore"
America is just a metaphor here.
S T U N N I N G ! Simple and awesome!
This song is powerful beyond the mere words within it. There have been times I actually have to stop listening because it moves me to actual tears. It's a sad, yet astonisingly beautiful masterpiece, and the standout song of the album IMO.
... wonderful
The only band in the world that can bring tears to my eyes. I’m the strongest man on earth when it comes to tears, but when times are hard this is the only band that can bring me to this level of reality. Hands down the best music for thought and feelings in the world😅
I think the guitar in this song came first, and then the lyrics were written to fit....... Yes, I am on loop for over an hour!!!!!!!!!💥💥💥💥
Thank you, London Grammar. This must be one of the most beautiful lyrics I ever saw.
Anyone in art - or anyone with a dream, really - must have had that moments. Having a mental block, comparing yourself with others, questioning yourself, and anxious about whether you actually have any future in it.
If you are one of those, I hope all the strength in the world for you. It's alright, amongst all the unoriginalities and all the uniqueness in this world, you still matter - you always do.
I can’t get enough of this band and her soulful voice.
*sobing* It is such a beautiful song (a beautiful record too) "and all the parties they fade".... Thank you London Grammar and especially Hannah for sharing this very personnal message with us. Gladly the journey will continue and we'll still meet at concerts and be mind blown, listening to your many many albums ! cheers guys xx
Amazing ❤
This voice conveys melancholy, wanderlust, empathy and longing
So hard as an artist to do.
what one gives in a song,
one must first live it so long,
but it never leaves you.
очень красивая песня и , наконец-то, просто выдающееся (по-моему мнению) видео ! хочется и пересматривать и переслушивать .
The best song of all the great songs on the album.
When she looks behind and then, smiles. Then, she smiles again. ¡¡LL.GG., ¡great!!
Simply powerful. That ending gave me shivers.
I was going to leave this with one comment, but this has stuck with me since today at work..... I know the world thinks we are selfish..... matter of fact things happening in my beautiful America right now are... but We the Republic will always be very alive.... Very Very Alive.... The prayers for my America are Psalms 23, and Ezekeil 25:17 Godspeed, Good people of my great Country!
Hannah Reid has said that for her the lyrics are a metaphor - so not about the real country America:
"This song is about my journey letting go of the past and learning how to write music after a difficult time with my health. I use the idea of the American dream to wave goodbye to things I didn’t need anymore"
(that said, I still think our personal interpretations are just a valid)
Yea! Definitely feels like Vera Lynn Stuff kind of.... One thing is true a good song can only make you think and wonder....
I'm still here in 2024! This Is the day after Nov 5th year of our Lord 2024 FREEDOM MY FRIENDS HAS NEVER FELT, AND TASTED SO GOOD! GOD REST OUR SOLDIERS! BE WITH ALL OF THEM THE FIGHTING AND THE PERISHED GOD SPEED AMERICA!
Can't express enough gratitude, for such a piece of art that you made, musically and with this video. This is such a powerful way to express this thing that you had, deep inside, and rarelly have I seen such an harmony in a song with a video clip. The way people are fading, like if nothing was really there, specially when you're experiencing those moments, is so representative.
Thank you, for the bottom of my heart, for all this amazing work, before, now, and in the future.
This ..indeed, you have expressed it very well.
Hannah is one of the world’s greatest wonders 🙏 Her voice is a treasure!
underrated in my books
Qll voices are gold but its silver lining that makes us fart and really thats the dibbly of canterbury
All
Oh my god!!! You are beyond incredible. I’m so glad I found your voice and music. Thank you 🙏💜🕊
No thanks just love each other as hard as it us ,together
I love her voice - so pure and clear and free of affectation.
Wow look at her subtle break in laugh that she try's to hide behind a smile at 1:40. Such incredible acting wow...
This song is so effortlessly deep and beautiful...simple words that speak the truth and with such a great video is just gives me shivers
She never had a home for me either. My new life's anthem. Thanks Hanna.
I'm not familiar with London Grammar's writing process, but this song is amazing. Great art invokes thought and interpretation. The last 5 years of being American has been strange. We're hardworking and lazy, we're proud and embarrassing. We're trying to figure out whether a country of absolute individuals can succeed and we're not sure. All of that is reflected in this song, by a band from another country. The mirror is brutal sometimes.
Absolutely gorgeous...
London Grammar, you are genius. Pure emotion, deep and crystal clear.
I’ve chased many a meaningless dream…and where did I end up?
I’ll chase dreams for all time…
One day I’ll find it. Maybe it will be in America?
These lyrics speak to me, they speak such truth.
Excellent. Thank you.
This song gives me goosebumps, and is almost as good as "I Need The Night" in my opinion. Can't wait to see you guys live in Manchester in November.
My other favorite song from the album is Californian Soil, the voice and the strumming on the guitar are great
Agreed. These three songs are definitely my favourites
"All My love" and "Call your friends "for me.
"I need the night" carries so much joy, excitement and positive energy, it's unbeleivable. Makes happy everytime i listen to it.
Enjoy for me at is concert in Manchester 😉
This song is incredible. Sends shivers down my spine every time.
This song is so powerful and beautiful, gives me goosebumps everytime. ❤
Angel❤
Don't you ever think to give up singing&composing!
We love you so much and your voice's angelic!
Her Voice goes under the Skin, but the Clip is exellent!! Thank you so much Hannah, and the People who make it!!!👏
Fantastic! Can’t stop listening Californian Soil again and again, what a masterpiece.
Few songs make me turn on the loop option. This is one of them.
Люблю слушать как вы поёте!!!
Вы классная!!!!
We’re not done fighting for America. Although she may naught had a home for you, this is my home and my lady. And there are plenty of us not jaded who will fight. I hope we’ll give you reason to put hope and America in the same song next time...I love just about everything you all do. I’ll do everything needed to give you reason
May good fortune be with you all the way.
That said, for Hannah Reid the lyrics were a metaphor. Rather than about your lovely troubled country - the real America.
"This song is about my journey letting go of the past and learning how to write music after a difficult time with my health. I use the idea of the American dream to wave goodbye to things I didn’t need anymore"
After living in London for good portion of my adult life I finally moved to USA. London Grammar songs was one of my dearest and mood-inspiring during my young adult time in UK, and now, that i moved to USA, they are striking back, with that album, and with this song called America. You guys are amazing artists, thank you so much for all that beautiful, soul-touching music.
One of the best singers of the world. I love her so much.
This video is giving me exactly the same vibe that the song does. Incredible. Thank you for that, guys, and come to Brazil asap

This is hauntingly beautiful guys! It is unbelievably poignant! This is ART on its highest level! Congratulations to London Grammar, they deserve it!
As an American, I have a deeper appreciation for this song today.
only woman alive today that can make you cry tears of joy with just her voice. Now that people is something to be cherished ✌
Oh, dunno ‘bout that. Have you heard the lead singer of Portishead?
She’s so humble and understated I don’t even remember her name most of time. (Beth Gibbons).
As an American; this song is ground breaking. Great song London Grammar!
Hannah is a breathtaking angel with a magical voice!!! Amazing song, guys!!!
la musica dei london grammar e la voce di hannah mi hanno stregato, non riesco a trovare nulla di più bello!!
One of my favourite tracks! It’s brilliant!
This gal has one of the best voices in music today.🎵♥️🎵
