Two things can be true
He does deserve the money because of the eyes and engagement he brings
The way he brings engagement is bad for sports media
bingo
Exactly.
He’s great at what he does, and what he does is extremely destructive
Garbage. This dude and skip are why I got sick of sports tv: the whole turning it into a political argument style of a show. It ruined everything about 15 years ago.
I get why he's paid and will get paid,, because so many people watch. But I don't watch much of anything espn wise, and the culture dude brought is the reason.
thats facts. not much in life is black and white, most everything is a grey area.
@@No_Use_For_A_Name1981 preach
No exaggeration… if SAS left ESPN I would start watching ESPN again, he makes it unwatchable because he has to be part of everything
I knew I wouldn't be able to watch a single second of the Finals pregame as soon as they showed SAS walking down the tunnel... acting like he's a god damn player lmao
The news about Around The Horn has me more upset than Stephen A right now. ATH is an institution and Tony Reali is a saint. It's a huge loss.
The problem with ESPN is late stage content creation. We have too much content fighting for everyone's attention and the bigger institutions aren't getting enough views to afford the costs of sports programming.
I am of both ways of thinking: Stephen A. is a consummate personality has maintained relevancy for almost 2 decades be it in a positive or negative manner, and has cemented himself as the figurehead of a major sports network. However, he does control the narrative far too often and makes the show about himself, and if there is a sports story or topic he doesn't want to cover, it never will, even sports covered on ESPN like the NHL, WNBA, MLS, et. al.
He is worth quite a lot, but 100 million is truly reaching.
Crazy how often we consumers side with mega corporations. The company probably generates one hundred million from Stephen's likeness or presence annually, yet we're angry at him for wanting twenty-five of it.
Yup, never understood how people don't see that. If you make a company 200K wouldn't you want atleast a 10K salary?
Stephen A was clowning players like Westbrook for their high salaries like they never earned it. He could be replaced and we would still watch the show. It's his guests that make the show interesting. Even so, he has no chemistry with Shannon. He has Shannon on a puppet string. His dad jokes aren't that funny and he always tries to create fake news from his anonymous sources.
@@upfulsoul826who are you watching first take for?
It’s because I don’t want to watch him. By all means pay him as you want if you can put someone else on air.
@@quitepossiblyasian2558nobody fucking watches first take for anything bruh, either you turn on the tv and it’s already on the channel, or they have it on in the bar, that’s the only way normal ppl are ever seeing that show
You ask for 100 million cuz that’s the only way you gonna GET 100 million.
Kofi always spitting huge
It's all acting on the Chris Berman paradox: Yeah, Chris Berman was MEGA popular back when ESPN became part of the cultural zeitgeist, but you can't have ALL Chris Berman. It's like having all Woody Paige. He is an entertaining part of a whole, but people with the money keep wanting to save their bonuses by cutting out most of the whole, and then we get all one thing so much it exposes all the flaws and wears out all the joy. Making one Sports Yelling guy your brand is pretty much betting everything on the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
I really don’t like Steven A, but I think he deserves it. The nba has never been more profitable and everyone deserves a slice, not just the shareholders.
$100m for his constant bad takes and dissing black players? Most of his political takes are cringe. I prefer player pods and even Skip more than him. Skip is the only media guy to give Angel and Clark a fair critique. The other shows just overhype Clark.
I mean regardless of what you think about his quality, he is for sure worth that much to ESPN, and I’d rather the money go to the individual than the corporation. I suppose the issue comes in when you think that people might be let go to accommodate for this in the budget
Loes
The only player pod that is objectively worse than Steven A is Gilbert Arenas’ pod
The guy over values himself as a analyst for sure
I was with you until the skip point never has someone had me in the first half so crazy and then fall off in the second half 😂
ESPN plasters him all over their NBA coverage, he's a monolith. You can't put so much significance in your coverage to one guy, then not want to pay the guy when the bill comes due. They can get a lot of solid reporters and/or talking heads for 25m a year, but they got rid of all those people a long time ago, because SAS was their guy. Well, if that's the case, they should pay him as if he's their guy.
Ah yes, 100 million to the guy who tanked the prestige and reputation of ESPN
Stephen A didn't do that ESPN did that to themselves
You must think this is a video about Skip Bayless
ESPN had been going to shit before they made Steven A their main guy
Stephen A didn’t do that, but he is the current face of ESPN and that says enough
Skip bayless cultivated 2 generations of bad actors and terrible fans. Stephen A was his first venom-like off spring.
I think they laid off too many people to not give him what he wants.
He kinda ended skip too so he'll probably get it the money.
yo kofie im an aspiring journalism student and i love watching ur videos on sports journalism, i feel like its such a cool and important niche that no one really covers
He deserves as much as ESPN is willing to pay him. ESPN is cutting ties with a lot of talent seemingly to pay a few people a lot of money. We just don’t see/hear reports about the “higher ups” at ESPN confused or upset on why the state of the company is trending downward. 🤷🏾♂️
Kofie, superb presentation.
He does deserve it. He IS the show.
ESPN pays Pat that much to air his show because ESPN also pays for PMS' entire staff. not just PAT
Give the show to Shannon for $10mil and watch the rating soar ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️
ESPN should drop Woj for Shams. Shams is much more entertaining for TV.
You know he’s gonna make it about race. And loyalty.
SAS ain’t no damn NFL quarterback!
I remember pre pandemic Mike Greenberg got more than SAS….i don’t enjoy SAS tv content but he was undervalued for farrrr to long
Kelly Clarkson Show has double the ratings of First Take and she makes closer to 20 mil a year just saying
If it would make it any easier for you, Steven A narrates his own book on audible. I made it all the way through, not the worst book I’ve ever listened to but not anything spectacular
Stephen A wasting air time on camera angles is baffling. No one wants to watch you direct
The extremely bright and glib Stephen A. Smith does get blocks of time for his hobbies, moreover he blends business with leisure.
It’s simply about how the people who run the industry are chosing to operate
There's gotta be some kind of language in the contract that states if we give you this money you gotta fix that hairline.
Was Pat’s show acquired? I thought he licensed it.
Am I the only person that watches kofie at 2x speed???😂😂
I watch all of YT at 2x speed. I feel a bit guilty tho cause it halves their watch time
God kofie rules
Sas just doesn’t rly like basketball at this stage of his career and hasn’t for a lil while tbh
i do NOT need to hear stephen a’s political takes holy shit
Stephen A is the hardest working man in sports media. He might be worth $25M/yr to ESPN. They've let a lot of talent walk.
He can't even accurately name players or their roles on the team he claims to love so much. Every time I see Stepehn talk I come away convinced he doesn't like or watch sports anymore.
What I dislike about Stephen A the most in his current iteration is how all of the other commentators fawn and trip over themselves to boost his ego. It has really made the show insufferable how these grown adults turn into sycophants for him to get into his good graces. His treatment of Max was appalling and for all its hilarity, I'm glad TO said Max was more black than him. Not because it's true but because I know that shit keeps him up at night lol.
Which is why even though I normally abhor Monica McNutt's takes, I appreciated her calling out SAS's lack of proactive WNBA coverage. It's so disingenuous for him to paint himself as a visionary, when he waited until it's obvious that the WNBA is just about to become viable. Nothing wrong with the last part, but revising history is.
If they let him go ESPN will just keep chugging along just like when every other personality left. In fact you might actually have more people watching if he left. I cannot watch their coverage of NBA games I just come in when the game starts since I just am tired of him talking and being wrong so often. Let him take his cowboy hat to FoxSports.
Stephen A Smith doesn’t deserve $100 million he doesn’t show up in big games he’s a playoff choker and a system analyst Max Kellerman was always better
Get the 💰by any means necessary💯💨🍄💧
i hate Stephan A. so much....he is so full of himself its disgusting
Stephen A. shits on any team not located in Cali, Florida, or NY because he doesn’t want to travel there
Nobody is worth 100 million.
If they can generate more than that then they are. It's not difficult to grasp, this is the entertainment business. These businesses make billions of dollars and you think no one is deserving of 100 million? Weird.
@@StillAwesome21 in this context sure but realistically I don’t think the business CEOs, athletes, nor people like Stephen A need 100 million. Especially knowing what the production crew members, writers and others who work on these sets make. Plus, these sort of contracts are why sport entertainment networks have less shows and cutting cost by discontinuing success, but not always top talent, at their network.
You've got to consider what the executives make. As the face of the network he does deserve an equitable piece of the pie.
jalen Brunson?
SAS has been at ESPN for 30 years. Time to hang it up, OLD MAN
This is the problem with boomers. He has infinite money. HOW MUCH MORE DO YOU PEOPLE NEED. RETIRE ALREADY
You act like he's Dick Vitale 😂
He has zero self awareness.
He's just super rich
What Stephen A. Smith dealt Max was morally repugnant.
What ? Up until this year no one was watxhing the WNBA. These are Facts. . IThe WNBA has always lost money. Is this new information to you? Let me find out you do not know what your talking about?
WNAB, whats that?
The problem with ESPN is late stage content creation. We have too much content fighting for everyone's attention and the bigger institutions aren't getting enough views to afford the costs of sports programming.
