@5:13 did it for me! I removed the needle jet and stuck a safety pin through the hole until I could see through it. Finally fixed a generator that hasn’t ran in over 5 years. Thanks!!!
With my propane generator I just remove the tank and store it as empty. My gas generator I am still trying to make it run consistently. I am thinking I have a bad low oil level sensor but I think I still have spark. Gonna have to revisit this once again. Your fix was perfect. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Some new generators have a fuel shutoff solenoid from the low oil sensor rather than spark shutoff. I watched several propane conversion videos that all have fuel shutoff wiring from the low oil sensor.
Nice fix, 👍👍. I make it a point to run my Honda genset once a month, letting the fuel run out and also draining the carb with the drain plug just to be sure it’s dry. I use a stabilizer called K100 which i find works great, it removes any water in the fuel. I use this stabilizer in all my equipment and never had an issue. Thanks for the vid! Stay safe.
My 8750 Predator generator has a 5 gallon tank. It is stored full with 93 octane premium gas with 10 gallons on stand by. It gets started every few months and let to run for 15 minutes under load. Carburetor is always run dry when finished. In the fall I drain the fuel tank and put it in my truck and fill it up with fresh 93. It's a heck of a generator and works great.
I had to use it for 37 hours straight once. Ending up draining the fuel from my tractor and anything else I could find to keep it going. After that I became much more prepared. It's a strange site at night when everything is dark with no electricity and your house is lit up and looks like nothing happened. The money saved in frozen food almost covered the cost of the generator. Here is a tip, wire it into to your breaker box.

I also like to empty them when I can. If not I always run the carb dry. Also I usually clean out the idle low speed jet when I have the carb out on the bench. Thanks for the video. By the way when someone purchases a generator, I am curious why they would not get one with a minimum of 4000 watts so you could run a furnace, lights, refrigerator, heating system, etc. I recommend to my customers to get at least a 8000 watt generator. I've got 1200 W Champion generator. I close the fuel valve and let it starve. Then I drain the tank. I have been using this method since 2011 and never had a problem starting it.

I will from time to time start them up run them around let em run for about 10 minutes and them put them back up for another couple months. No more then 2 months at time. Just picked one of these up. Gas tank was half full of rusty gas, strainer bad and main jet clogged with varnish. It started up and ran after I cleared the jet. Now to clean the junk out the fuel tank.
I have a dewalt portable generator. It has 275 hours on it. It starts with one pill but shuts off after about 30 mins of use. This just started at about 265 hours. I use 93 gas. I’m a truck driver and I use it to power my mini split AC/Heater. Also to run my microwave and tv. I NEVER have both the AC & microwave going at the same time. And yes the generator is producing enough power to run the AC. It was working just fine last week. Any help is MUCH appreciated. I’ve cleaned the spark resistor thing several times. The spark plug looks good. I drained the fuel chamber on the carburetor.
just for my information, have you checked to Oil to make sure it's not low? after that, I believe you have a fuel flow issue. This can be from a combination of things, such as a gas cap that's not venting enough air, a fuel line that beginning to swell, and causing reduced fuel flow, and the last, it could be a needle seat that's also swelling and causing less fuel to flow to the carb.
@@HomeGaragechannel oil seems to be okay. I changed it a couple weeks ago. But yes the level looks okay. I’m not much of a mechanic, but I’m not ignorant to engines. I’m guessing that the needle thing is internal carburetor correct?
Empty. I turn mine back on at the start of the Huricane season. I actually remove the spark plug and spray wd40 to lube the cylinder walls to help with that first start up.
I was recently given one that essentially looks the same as this, the spring around the throttle to choke arm is broken, any idea what it’s called or where I might get a replacement? It’s surging like yours was with the fuel off so maybe I have fuel delivery issue somewhere, and at first startup it produces only 50v, after 10 minutes of running it starts to jump around and eventually gets to about 230.
do you mean the spring that can be seen at 4:25? if so that's the return spring for the throttle lever. If yours is surging you need to clear the pilot jet, and if you don't want to do that, A replacement carb is very affordable.
it's still fixable. I would look up your particular brand online for power problems and more than likely, someone has already come up with the fix for it.
So I have a 110lb generator it has no gas tank and no cage. I thought it would never run because I have just gotten into 4-stroke and so I used my 2-stroke knowledge and shot some fuel down the carb and it ran for a solid 4 seconds so now I need a gas tank
If I had a generator i would add in a fuel stabilizer to the good fuel and run it for s couple of minutes then run it dry to avoid gumming up the carburator jets etc and keep an eye on the spark plug too
this was a customers generator so I don't have access to it, but the the switch closes, to ground the coil to the metal on the engine. The switch is "open" in the On position

@@HomeGaragechannel .. I've had the carb off but didn't realise the bottom bowl came off, I thought it was threaded & tried unscrewing it but it was very tight. Think I'll just hit it with a rubber hammer & see if it breaks the seal !!
1 VERY important factor to consider. ........ I cant name not even one Generator ,1400.00 price range or less that has an inline fuel fiilter. And I believe, its because they dont want it to last years & years reliably. Almost every generator , the first issue that will arise is having to do with the carb. most will just sell it off or deal with the issue by rebilding it or replacing the carb. But overall usually the first issue and often Only issue will be the carb is acting up due to debrees and buildup. They know this, but ya dont see an inline fuel filter on them.
The fuel line might be swelling internally restricting fuel flow, or the screen inside the tank, right where it leaves the tank might be clogged with varnish.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks for the reply, I've cleaned out the filter in the tank, but you're right about the fuel lines, I'll check them next, it's a suitcase generator, do you think it could be a faulty diaphragm pump

To a fair extent, work on half a dozen of these it is like having worked on 60 of them. I d rather take the time to clean a carb an get it back to the customer quicker than buying a new carb.
@@HomeGaragechannel Champion 4550 started right up after 1.5 years, same gas with 40ml of Sea foam, full tank. Only about twelve hours of use on the Gen.
If he was a good small engine serviceman, he would have cleaned the whole carb., before putting it back together. What was shown was the high speed jet being un-clogged, and if it's clogged there's a good 50% chance the small jet is clogged as well, as well as the fuel tunes, the fuel flows through inside the carb. It's best to clean all parts and tunnels in a carb, before putting the carb together, and back on the engine. Had I done the servicing, I would have started mainly with the carb., before checking the spark plug, but a small shot of starting fluid, and a few turn overs, would have told me whether engine had spark or not, without buying a spark plug checker, and added extra work getting the plug out. If engine fired up with that shot of starting fluid, you know it's a carb. issue, not electrical. Would have saved time, in getting to root cause of issue of not running. 90% of engine not starting, or running poorly problems is carburetor issues. The engine surging (revving up and down), is caused by a dirty low speed jet. Problem is, he failed to clean the whole carb., the first time round, which he should have done. Like I said, if you take a carb apart, clean the whole thing, and clean it well, before putting it back together, and mounting it to engine.
thanks Wayne Davies, there are a couple more generator videos on here that you need to watch. there are some on some blowers, that I need more advice on as well. I'm sure you'll have so great advice to give.
He said it in the beginning. It hasn’t been used in a while, so more than likely it isn’t starting because of the carburetor. I have yet to watch the video, but I’m assuming so.
Starting a gen, with a load on it; > >> IS A NO-NO....never STOP a gen, with a load on it. Always run gens, for 2 minutes after removing a load ! Google on why......
I store me generators dry, drain the fuel tank, run the carburetor dry, and then before i store it i change the oil, blow out the air filter and airbox, whip it down and put it away
I think you would have been better off first if there's a drain screw drain the carburetor see if there's fuel there if there is fuel there then turn the fuel valve on to see if it flows through...... you are lucky and your oil there is no gas it appears so..... your float is either stuck up or it is stuck down...... and then you remove the carburetor
chances are some1 just shut off engine w switch, not thinking gas is still in carb and after a few months, the jets and orifices in carb get clogged bigtime+ running in a possible dusty area can make it run rich due to less air to engine. If not run for some time, the residual field can be lost and can't build up voltage, then u flash the rotor (field) with a car battery or lawn tractor or bike battery. push button circuit breakers do go bad.
how to store gas --- If gas isn't there -- there can be no dirty gas after not using it for a lengthy time ... so store your generator with no gas in it ... problem solved ...

same problem same fix on my firman 7552. would run on propane but not gas. check the solenoid mounted under the carburetor as well.
thank you Larry Blinn.
I've got 1200 W Champion generator. I close the fuel valve and let it starve. Then I drain the tank. I have been using this method since 2011 and never had a problem starting it.
Nice method
Can you make the brush cutter videos
I working on it
Before storing the gen, run it out of gas and drain the float bowl. Then mix some gas with a shot of transmission fluid and run it again. Then redrain the float bowl. Now store it with a tag that describes what you did and the date you did it.
thank you Mascotal
Everything i own with motor i will not let Just sit for long periods of time. I will from time to time start them up run them around let em run for about 10 minutes and them put them back up for another couple months. No more then 2 months at time. If i dont do this i already know im wrecking them/causing them to have problems. Its good to fire them up let them run for 10 minutes. Simple fix for surging engine is seafoam. Keeps carb cleaned out. I use GY-6 Full synthetic for my Honda Gen. I dont play around. God gives nice things so i take care of them.
very good way of thinking. Thank you GodisMyLight
oohhhoooo a grateful man you are!! im sure g-d does nice things for you!!
Ram-board floor protective covering is great for making gaskets.
I'll have to keep that in mind.
Just picked one of these up. Gas tank was half full of rusty gas, strainer bad and main jet clogged with varnish. It started up and ran after I cleared the jet. Now to clean the junk out the fuel tank.
nice work!
I have a brand new out of the box WEN 4750 that won’t start/run. What can I do ?
this model might have a Low Oil shut off, how much oil was put into the engine?
What type of oil is best for generator
I would suggest 10w-30, But always follow what your manual says
@@HomeGaragechannel should I leave the gas cap off maybe?
yes it is, replacing the carb, would be the easiest way to fix it, rather than taking the carb apart.
no, because you'll loose some fuel, as the engine is running and that would be quite messy.
Empty. I turn mine back on at the start of the Huricane season. I actually remove the spark plug and spray wd40 to lube the cylinder walls to help with that first start up.
thats sounds like a great way to keep wear down. thanks for the comment
I store portable like that either empty or at minimum I will run the carb bowl dry even if it is treated fuel.
Thanks Nashguy207 for the comment I appreciate it
I was recently given one that essentially looks the same as this, the spring around the throttle to choke arm is broken, any idea what it’s called or where I might get a replacement? It’s surging like yours was with the fuel off so maybe I have fuel delivery issue somewhere, and at first startup it produces only 50v, after 10 minutes of running it starts to jump around and eventually gets to about 230.
do you mean the spring that can be seen at 4:25? if so that's the return spring for the throttle lever. If yours is surging you need to clear the pilot jet, and if you don't want to do that, A replacement carb is very affordable.
I have a generator that runs but doesn’t generate power. Is the generator fixable or is it just a pile of scrap? thanks
it's still fixable. I would look up your particular brand online for power problems and more than likely, someone has already come up with the fix for it.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks you.👍👩🔧
You are a lifesaver! Thanks so much!!
No problem!
Hello can i ask how i fix my generator the gasoline mixing with the oil in the engine?
is sounds like the Gasoline is leaking into the engine thru the carb, I would replace the carb.
So I have a 110lb generator it has no gas tank and no cage. I thought it would never run because I have just gotten into 4-stroke and so I used my 2-stroke knowledge and shot some fuel down the carb and it ran for a solid 4 seconds so now I need a gas tank
nice, at least you know it works
@@HomeGaragechannel yep
How do I get the tank filter out at the value shutoff
Can I just pull it out from the bottom
it's all one assembly just unscrew the fuel shut off valve out of the bottom of the tank .
What type of oil do you use ?
car oil, 10w-30.
Great video, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
If I had a generator i would add in a fuel stabilizer to the good fuel and run it for s couple of minutes then run it dry to avoid gumming up the carburator jets etc and keep an eye on the spark plug too
That is a great way to avoid generator problems. Thanks for the comment Patrick Stapleton.
@@HomeGaragechannel my pleasure mate cheers from Australia and it,s currently our Spring Season atm and perfectly ideal for mowing too

I got a diesel one that runs on oil once in awhile I got to hit it with starter fluid.
i've always wanted a diesel generator. did you buy yours new?
@@HomeGaragechannel yes got it 5years ago got it on sale it's great cause you can run it on used oil

Awesome thanks 👍
You bet!
I really need to see how the engine switch is wired up. I have the same one but varmints chewed those wires out
this was a customers generator so I don't have access to it, but the the switch closes, to ground the coil to the metal on the engine. The switch is "open" in the On position
welding tip files are very good
Yes they are
I have a Champion generator and I just had the exact same problem!
it's a very common problem. thank you Dwain Holloway.
Do you have any social media , i want sent a photo , i did restoration my generator and assembly camshaft and cranshaft but i have problem camshaft my generator no have any signal to join cranshaft , can you help me about that problem
sure, send your questions and pics to homegaragemail@gmail.com
Fixing most new equipment has become a real PIA. No wonder considering the hourly repair rate, it becomes cost effective to just buy new.
You are absolutely correct
Looks to be the same carb as mine, recon I've got the same problem !! 🤔
I hope you can get it working.
@@HomeGaragechannel .. I've had the carb off but didn't realise the bottom bowl came off, I thought it was threaded & tried unscrewing it but it was very tight. Think I'll just hit it with a rubber hammer & see if it breaks the seal !!
give it a shot
Gracias por sus videos
no problema
Fixed me! Thanks
Glad to help
1 VERY important factor to consider. ........ I cant name not even one Generator ,1400.00 price range or less that has an inline fuel fiilter. And I believe, its because they dont want it to last years & years reliably. Almost every generator , the first issue that will arise is having to do with the carb. most will just sell it off or deal with the issue by rebilding it or replacing the carb. But overall usually the first issue and often Only issue will be the carb is acting up due to debrees and buildup.
They know this, but ya dont see an inline fuel filter on them.
I don't remember if there was one on here, but there probably wasn't
great tip!! $1 filter = $500 genrator saved
I have the same generator but it won't stay running??
replace the carb.
It's very similar to Generac power generator... Both made in China
Thanks for the information I didn't know that.
Mines surging like mad, I dismantled the carb completely and cleaned it thoroughly but it's still surging and only runs smooth on half choke
The fuel line might be swelling internally restricting fuel flow, or the screen inside the tank, right where it leaves the tank might be clogged with varnish.
@@HomeGaragechannel
Thanks for the reply, I've cleaned out the filter in the tank, but you're right about the fuel lines, I'll check them next, it's a suitcase generator, do you think it could be a faulty diaphragm pump
could you tell me the make and model number, that way I see what it looks like. I'll then be able to answer your diaphragm question.
@@HomeGaragechannel
Aww thanks, it's a honda eu2000i and it's done less than 100 hours, but it was left for about a year with a tank full of fuel in that time I only started it up about 4 times
thanks for the information, so the carb on this honda eu2000i doesn't have diaphragm, but a bowl and float, just like their lawn mowers.ua-cam.com/video/xrxDsecBpTA/v-deo.html
I run stableliser in all my stuff all year long
Me too. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I keep my generator empty. But i do start it once or twice per year and then let it run dry
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
God that worked added it to my router
To a fair extent, work on half a dozen of these it is like having worked on 60 of them.
I
d rather take the time to clean a carb an get it back to the customer quicker than
buying a new carb.
you make a good point.
And what happens when the problem is that there is no electricity for the spark plug...could it be the coil?
that, or the on/off switch, or the low oil sensor
Sea foam, its really good stuff. But i drain my carb for storage.
Great tip!
@@HomeGaragechannel Champion 4550 started right up after 1.5 years, same gas with 40ml of Sea foam, full tank. Only about twelve hours of use on the Gen.
nice
Thank you Randy Scott.
3 words "Inline Fuel filters "
Thanks for the comment
What Is Wrong With The Generator?
He said it in the beginning. It hasn’t been used in a while, so more than likely it isn’t starting because of the carburetor. I have yet to watch the video, but I’m assuming so.
The main jet in the carb was clogged.
@@Anonymouso283 you are absolutely correct
@@JaneT-vv3tv yes sir
Starting a gen, with a load on it; > >> IS A NO-NO....never STOP a gen, with a load on it. Always run gens, for 2 minutes after removing a load !
Google on why......
hey thanks
I could use a video on how to change the oil on this generator
let me see what I can do.
I store me generators dry, drain the fuel tank, run the carburetor dry, and then before i store it i change the oil, blow out the air filter and airbox, whip it down and put it away
Excellent
I always store mine empty!
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I think you would have been better off first if there's a drain screw drain the carburetor see if there's fuel there if there is fuel there then turn the fuel valve on to see if it flows through...... you are lucky and your oil there is no gas it appears so..... your float is either stuck up or it is stuck down...... and then you remove the carburetor
I think you're right.
I keep mine with fuel stabilizer

@@joshuaschannel1335 nice, do you have many yards to do?
You really want Far and Beyond to remove that spark plug it could have been removed without the tanks being removed
for filming
Lmao oh i understanding now
chances are some1 just shut off engine w switch, not thinking gas is still in carb and after
a few months, the jets and orifices in carb get clogged bigtime+ running in a possible
dusty area can make it run rich due to less air to engine. If not run for some time, the
residual field can be lost and can't build up voltage, then u flash the rotor (field) with a car
battery or lawn tractor or bike battery. push button circuit breakers do go bad.
thank you for the information
When you do another repair can you show your face
Some day
Yeah --- play it safe -- leave the tank empty ...
me too.
how to store gas ---
If gas isn't there -- there can be no dirty gas after not using it for a lengthy time ... so store your generator with no gas in it ... problem solved ...
that's what I do.
