I was a freshman at OU and in the Pride of Oklahoma. This is still probably the most satisfying game I’ve ever seen. Lol. And I’ve seen a bunch of OU games.
My first kid was born a week later. I watched the Kansas State game in the maternity ward at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. I was warned several times by staff to keep it down lol.
I remember being in high school during this game. It was a sunny Saturday in my part of Oklahoma and I was in marching band practice most of the day at my high school, but all of us students would run into the library whenever we could, because there was a TV there, and just get hyped.
Aint that da truth. I hated watching that dude, PERIOD. I remember watching him throw away our championship dreams against Colorado in 2001. Major Applewhite was INFINITELY better than Simms. Things must be earned in life. Mack gave Simms the QB job because of Phil Simms' reputation. Politics.
@sboudreaux27 Applewhite was the better qb but let's not act like his record against OU matters. His two wins were 1998 with John Blake when OU still sucked and 1999 in Stoop's first year when Brown already had a year to get Texas somewhat back. When OU was back to their standard Applewhite was awful against them.
My Sooner brother was at this game, he called me close to halftime, he couldn't even talk he was laughing so hard. So much fun to utterly humiliate your rival on national TV.
You watched step one. Go watch the next two games as well. Kansas State and Nebraska. That stretch sums up Heuple. If you can come see us next year. Love that Josh is coming back for our first SEC game. I went to the game we played in Tennessee a few years ago. Y’all are great. We will return the favor and your fans will love it.
What made this game all the more shocking was that the Sooners were actually the lower-ranked team. It's not like a No. 1 Oklahoma laid a beating on an unranked Texas team. These two teams were closely ranked and Texas was higher.
OU was special that year. This is coming from a Texas fan. UT did take their ass whopping to finally deal it back in 2005. But, the good even match games wqs during the Sam Bradford and McCoy era
It's more than that. Oklahoma was coming off perhaps its worst decade in football, and although the Sooners were ranked 12th in this game, no one was really thinking that they were ready to challenge a legitimate top-10 outfit like Texas. Just two seasons prior to this, OU was AWFUL; when this game started, absolutely no one had any clue that Texas was about to get annihilated by what turned out to be the best team in the country. This result was a massive surprise at the time.
Yep, and then 2005 happened. Then some great closer games for most part in the McCoy and Bradford era. But, 2022 is the best. Funny thing is all OU fans knew 2005 was going to be an ass whoopin.
My first Red River Shootout! This one was hard to watch as a devout Texas fan. The weather was horrible to make matters worse. OU was just a championship team on a mission. As difficult as it is to admit, we simply weren't at their level that year.
Max, this was my first as well... I will NEVER forget waking up at the hotel that morning... 5:45, didn't need a wake up call, was so pumped.. Walked out of the room, and went whoa, about 45 degrees, rainy, windy, nasty weather....Went down with my with greedy sister & brother in law...waited until we were at the stadium steps to break the news they only had 2 tickets (too chicken sh*t to do it before then).. So, at 14, I made my way, alone, to some tent that was right next to the cotton bowl... They had the game on a big TV at the back of the tent. A big group of OU fans were huddled around watching...AND IT WAS AWESOME.. The roar that echoes across the state fair grounds when its being played... Then the actuality of what was happening... OU had been down so long. Not even in bowl contention, let alone national title talk... That game, that day, hurdled Oklahoma into almost two decades of prominent football. At the half my sister finally came out and gave me her ticket (since the game was pretty much over). I was behind two texas fans, old men when I was trying to get into the stadium for the 3rd quarter... Overheard one ask the other "where do you wanna go ?" The other responded, "Does it matter ? We will be under fire from OU fans anywhere in the city of Dallas!" That still makes me laugh... Anyway, fun seeing others, even if you are a UT fan, that the 2k game was their first... Awesome
My goodness from 95-2000 (96 OT miracle being the exception), yeah, the OU-Texas game SUCKED ASS from OUs perspective... Major...I can't even say his name lol. Tell ya what, as a fan, of either school...youre taking a chance going to that game...cause losing it SUCKS when you're there. It is an emotional investment as much as financial. Making the drive, fighting Dallas traffic the friday night before, fighting state fair traffic the saturday morning of. Fighting the enormous crowd of OU-UT fans and state fair foot traffic to even get to the stadium. Then usually sweating your ass off inside (2k being the exception there). Tack on what is usually a 5:30 AM wake up call since it kicks at 11 every year.....then repeating the entire process afterwards... My ass is dragging like an old tired dog after all that, HOWEVER, it IS WORTH IT if you win... Makes the sunburn, the dent in the wallet, the tiredness all worth while, and then some... With that being said, if you lose.....It compounds the suckness by a million.. Hence the investment. I am not one of those fans thats like "oh yeah, but the atmosphere and fair make it fun regardless." BS. Win or nothing lol. I am with you on the corn dogs though... Thinking about it right now is making me hungry.
You make a great point about all the shit that you have to go through on the day of the game. If your team wins its all worth it. If not, it's a huge waste in terms of money and time. It can be very exhausting, especially when its really hot and humid. And then don't even get me started on the crowd and the massive line for a corny dog and a beverage.
Duuuuude... Since this whole kickoff at eleven AM thing EVERY SINGLE YEAR thing happened, this day completely kicks my ass. You can't even go out anymore the Friday night before the game. Used to, Commerce street....party it up, have a rally at the team hotel, band used to come down and play, everyone drinkin... Now, lights out at eleven so the wake up call doesn't go unheard. Kinda sucks. I even emailed David Boren and Joe Castiglione over the matter. As an Oklahoma alum. Told them exactly what I just said, that the enjoyment of the whole weekend has now turned into a rush for time.. And believe it or not, OUs AD, Castiglione, replied and AGREED. Said its all about TV and money... Im with you on the lines, FOR EVERYTHING at the fair... And yes, when its hot, it sucks massive ass. We drive back to Oklahoma typically after the game due to our dog (Don't like to board her too long)... Time we get home, my ass goes to the fridge for a Bud, and to the chair for the AC and TV lol
Ya know I don't think it's level of talent the Sooners have been lacking at times. I think it's the conference evolving into a bunch of offenses that put up points on anyone.
As someone from Oklahoma I have 2 What If? Dreams. The first is what if Jason White had never gotten injured? I thinm OU would have gone to 3 straight National Championship games, I don't know if they could have beaten that 2001 Miami team? But I don't believe OU would have gotten blown out like Nebraska did. With Jason people forget he was a very mobile QB before his injuries, and you mix that with having Q as his RB and with all of the great WR they had plus the incredible Defense they back then. My other one is Whay if the Thunder offered a Max deal to James Harden? LoL.
What if Coach Stoops stayed on for one more year? With Stoops at the helm, and Riley coordinating the offense, I suspect we would have won it all in the 2017-2018 season.😎
When this game first aired I was appalled by how many times Earl Campbell was mentioned and not one mention about Billy Simms. Didn’t bother me Texas got drilled and it’s 2021 and Texas still sucks. BOOMER
What a comment after Griffins 6th touchdown referring to his grandkids watching this game on a VCR in 2050 if we still have them. Its 2022 and they have been gone for years already.
Hilarious. Towards the end of the 2nd quarter- toughest three game stretch in program history. Nah- OU ran through that stretch like they were playing JV teams. I went to every game in 2000. Tried telling people on the off-season that OU was going to be special. People laughed… until they didn’t. Mark it down now- 2023 will be another special year for the Sooners.
@@robhulsonsadly it didn’t end the way it should have. Losses to Kansas and Oklahoma State aren’t OK. But 10-2 after 6-7 is definitely a step in the right direction.
Amazing OU hasn't won a national title since 2000, and UT, since wining the title over an awesome USC team in '06, has barely remained their status as an All Time 9 team
Being a Sooner Fan I must admit , now there's no such thing as ahh landsharks, our defense explains it . The ocean has sharks nevertheless Oklahoma has landsharks. Well no such of a word right , right. Win or lose
11:57 on the clock in the fourth quarter, 3rd and 5 with OU up 56 to 14 and what do these Dirt Burglars do? They throw the ball. Texas could have and should have crushed OU 70-0 this year (2022) but for some reason we took our foot off the gas halfway through the third quarter and ran dive left and dive right for the rest of the game up 49-0. We should have politely returned the favor. OU sucks.
Whatever it takes to make you feel better. Come see me after this year’s game. I am always there. And just like most games I’ve been to (including the one in this video) the Sooners will roll. Hope you enjoyed last year. Venables is a guy that believes in payback. And he will get it.
The eyes of Texas have been blackened. Love that quote.
I was a freshman at OU and in the Pride of Oklahoma. This is still probably the most satisfying game I’ve ever seen. Lol. And I’ve seen a bunch of OU games.
So wqs the 49-0 last year.
@tudevoid Yea cool you won and failed after. We win and succeed after. We are not the same.
My first kid was born a week later. I watched the Kansas State game in the maternity ward at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. I was warned several times by staff to keep it down lol.
My son was 2 months old. He's been telling me to "keep it down" during OU games ever since.😂❤
I love the gallant effort the announcers put in to keep it interesting: it was 42 - 0 and yet they were positing how a Texas comeback was feasible!
Back when you didn't worry about getting penalized for the 'Horns Down'. Sheesh. Thanks alot, Mack.
Watching this again - damn our defense was so fast.
The Sooners of Oklahoma are unstoppable in the first half.
If this was a video game they're would've been a big game over flashing on the screen because this game is history man who's next.

Chris Simms was given the staring job because of daddy money. I was glad for this and it shows Mack brown had no spine.

Simms only started twice against OU.
@sboudreaux27 Applewhite was the better qb but let's not act like his record against OU matters.
