Amazing Dry Fly Action (ISOs and BWOs) | Autumn on the West Branch Delaware River - Hancock, NY

- All the local creeks have been super low with little rain recently so it made sense to head to the best tailwater around and I got out for a day on the WEST BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER. The upper WB was a little high and turbid so made my down to Hancock, NY. The fishing was great with plenty of ISOs and a mix of BWOs in the afternoon to keep the fish rising. Got a bunch of wild browns and rainbows on dry flies and had an absolute blast!

“I thought it was someone coming to fish, glad it was a deer.” Thanks for the laugh!
Hey hey Jon! Gotta love those overcast drizzly days. Nice work! 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Scott, yeah I hit it on a good day for sure!!
Fished the Delaware a few weeks back, Can't stop thinking about it. Thanks for more fishing envy. Already planning my next trip.
Thanks good luck when you come back!
Spectacular! I think those are the best days when you figure out what they are taking and it changes every few hours. You killed it on a stretch of river that gets pounded all summer. Thanks for taking us with you.
Trust me that river humbles me more often than not but this day I had some decent luck. It is crazy how the fish change what they want throughout the day and even fish to fish, keeps you thinking for sure
@@deaddriftoutdoors2940videos like this adventure inspire people to take off work and make the 2-3 drive up north (or south)! I'm heading up tomorrow morning, I hope I can do half as well as you did.
You continue to amaze me!
Absolutely awesome…
Thanks bud, it was a great day!
Another great WB video. Love your stuff - really appreciate the zoom on some of the dry fly takes.
Yeah it was tough to see in the fast water so I tried to zoom in a bit. Glad you enjoyed!!
Heck yeah, what an outing 💥💥💥
It was a good day for sure, thanks!
Love Delaware bows, great job!
Yeah they are a blast, great fighters for sure!
Another great video catching some nice browns. Had my first experience fishing with isos in June on the beaverkill. Very effective pattern when they're out.
Yeah its nice to be able to throw something big and visible ! Thanks for the comment!
Very nice time...some real pretty fish!
Thanks so much i appreciate it!
Nice vid John. Thanks for sharing. You're not the first UA-camr to greet that deer below the iron bridge. Stay hooked! Bill
Haha thats so funny. I heard something breaking sticks and moving around back there he didin't seem to afraid LOL, thanks for the comment!
Awesome video and some beautiful fish Jon!!
Thanks so much i appreciate it!
Nice intro, nice intermission made a nice video for some great fishing. Nice job (again)!
Thank you sir I always appreciate your kind words!
Awesome catches there!!!
Thanks so much!
Good to see you back on the west branch. I've got a place just over the hill from there about a 8 minute walk away. Usually there are always at least a couple of people fishing that spot. I've been working around the house but am about to go out and the weather looks very much like it does in your video. I've got a float trip booked for tomorrow,
Nice hope you had some luck!
@@deaddriftoutdoors2940 I got about a half dozen, including a pretty brown that was about 15". Of course, you remember the ones that you missed, and I hooked and loss a couple of fish that looked to be 18-19". It was quite windy so we didn't spend much time with drives. Most of the fish were on streamers but a couple on nymphs as well.
well done
Thanks!
I was just there on Sunday and it was unfishable - super fast flows and completely stained with tons of debris floating through. Every cast had tons of green muck on my streamer. Only stayed for about 20 minutes before giving up. I was in Deposit - I guess you must have been in a much better spot! Love your videos - keep up the good work.
Yeah i checked out Deposit and it looked very off color, they are letting a bunch of water out of the reservoir which can cause that. I was down in Hancock and it was clearer and more fishable.
@@deaddriftoutdoors2940 thanks for responding! Yeah was my first time at the WB and what a bummer. But next time I’ll try Hancock. Thanks man!
It was still stained when I fished it on Tuesday. The water was high, but not enough to displace fish and I caught six (and missed a few other good fish) on the lower west branch. The release from the reservoir is to reduce the level for some work on the tunnel that brings water to NYC. The reservoir has turned over (stratification), causing the discoloration and debris. The east branch is also getting releases from Peptacon reservoir but it's still clear. I got a smaller brown across from my place on Monday.
@@ithacasterexcited to give it a try again. Sadly the lower wb is over 2 hours away… the upper I could probably do. I hit one public spot on the way back home and there were a ton of rises. Had one on for a moment with an rs2 but I my friend really wanted to leave so I had to jet… next time!😂
@@ithacaster you have a place on the water??
Jon nice video and nice fish! Still haven’t made it up there have a rotator cuff rear that’s not quite ready hope to get up there over the winter or in the spring…
Thanks so much. Hope your shoulder heals up and you are back at it soon!
Thx!
slayer. great day
Haha thanks so much, this day I did well but that river humbles me more often than not!
Very nice Jon! Was the algae not problematic?
I find bigger creeks are tougher to find the fish, but offer bigger trophy fish when you hook one.
For sure
Great video thank you! What size tippet were you using on the dry flies?
I was fishing 5X
Enjoyed the video John. Can you tell me what bridge you fished in Hancock? Thanks
That’s the 191 Bridge that crosses from Hancock into PA.
@@jimmcmanus7911 Thanks John.
Jon,I love all your videos but great to see you down on the WBD again and having a lot of hookups. Weather looked perfect. I was just there last thursday(10/3) but was fishing way up at Hale Eddy area and the water was so stained that I saw no risers all afternoon. Did see some BWO fluttering around but not many. I resorted to nymphing and streamers. Broke two tanks off and had one spit my streamer back at me. Looks like the river was more fishable where you were downstream . Stained but fish were looking up. I’ll be back. Thx for taking us along! Looking forward to your next one. Tightlines!
Its the main (only) bridge right in town can't really miss it!
Yeah I stopped at Hale Eddy and it was high and stained, no risers so I kept going. Glad at least you got into a few. I love Hale Eddy. Thanks for the comment
What were water temps like that day?
Pretty sure that this isn't too far from where your last video was shot
Haha you are close!
@@deaddriftoutdoors2940 I've seen that stream quite a few times throughout the years and always wanted to fish it. It's not even 20 minutes from me. There's some other ones around that fish great too!!!
