I think the thing hanging inside the cabin was a quilting frame with a quilt on it. They would lower it and work on the quilt and after finishing for the day they would raise it to get it out of the way. God bless.
They are quilting frames that are hanging from the ceiling that is what the women used to use to make quilts, We enjoyed seeing all the elk what a blessing
That is a quilting frame in the ceiling. They would let them down and the ladies would sit around and have quilting bees. They would roll it back up as the day ended so there would be plenty room for family activities. It usually took several days to a week to make these quilts depending on how many people worked on them. My grandmother used to quilt like this & taught my Mom. My mom still uses this method sometimes as a winter activity & when she wants to gift a family member with a homemade quilt. If you ever get the opportunity to sit in on one of these quilting bees, do so. Very interesting art to know in this day and time. Some ladies even handstitch their name and sometimes a date on one of the blocks of the quilt. My Mom allowed her grandchildren to sew/embroidery their name onto one we will all cherish. ❤ Enjoyed this video. P.S. When the weather improves enough for the true story called, UNTO THESE HILLS Drama starts in the outdoor Amphitheater in Cherokee this would make an awesome video to share with us that live so far away. We saw it several times before. Would love to see it again. It's so worth going to (always take a jacket and a Blanket even in the cool summer nights).
Inside the cabin , hanging from the ceiling was a quilt in its frame. The stitching was made from the outside toward the center. When a row of stitching was finished; that part of the quilt was rolled under toward the center to allow access to next part of the quilt. The quilt was lowered to the level of someone sitting in a chair. The pattern of stitching was drawn with chalk and string . Maybe a half shell or half square pattern.
Well! That was a fun surprise! Haven't seen elk in the wild since l was last in Wyoming! My g ma taught me how to quilt when l was 10 or so, so in college, l surprised her with a bow tie quilt. She had a tear fit. Then, surprised the hubby with a beartrack quilt- it was fun to see their faces! Elk! Talk about right place, right time! Just too cool!!! 💥 Thanks!
Love seeing the elk. We saw them once when we were there. We love the Smokies. You all are blessed to live close by. I would love living there. Thanks. 😊

The elk!!!❤️❤️❤️. I love this video. The sound of the river rapids was so peaceful. I'm so glad people know that was a quilting frame! I thought it was a kite hahahaha..... So silly. Who had time to fly a kite? When were finished hunting, tending to farm animals and the field... splitting firewood and building a fire and cooking dinner... Anyone wanna go fly a kite? 🤦🏼♀️ Bless my heart...🤣🤣🤣

Cherokee and the area around is one of my favorite places in south western North Carolina. There is so much to see and I love the nature. And Oconaluftee Island Park in Cherokee is a nice place to hang out in the summer.
We have never seen the elk! We are looking forward to our next trip and taking 441 over for the first time to Cherokee, and Bryson City, NC.We have never been to that side, and are looking forward to seeing elk!
Loved this video. Best view of elk I've ever seen. So many! We visit there often since this is the way we go to Gatlinburg/PF. We'll be through that way Lord willing in a couple of weeks for the NQC Spring Break @ LeConte Ctr. We haven't stopped at the Oconaluftee visitors center in a long time, we need to do it again.
When we were there in September. We came across a ton of ELK. We have some great videos and pictures of the Elks calling around to each herd. We saw ours exactly where you said. Near Cherokee and the visitors center. Also per the rangers.. we were some of the first to see them and the rangers told us to call the ranger's phone # to let them know they are sighted. They told us this is to help set up perimeters so visitors don't try to get too close for pictures and possibly get hurt by them.
The Oconaluftee Visitor center in the old villages are pretty cool there’s also a trail right there that is pet friendly I want to check it out with my little dog she’ll love it. Love y’all video
