I’m grateful to have stumbled upon this video! I was 5 years old when my parents and grandparents took my sister and I on a summer vacation to the Smokies. We actually met the two remaining Walker sisters at their cabin. I remember them inviting us into their main living room (where you see the rock fireplace). They talked about the history of the place. Spread on tables were parchment copies of poems. Across the fireplace mantle were framed photos of relatives and poems. I remember some doyles that were hand-tatted. I remember some wooden blocks for children’s toys. I think I remember a hand-stitched quilt hanging over a line on the porch. I remember some apple pies. These were all things that were for sale, and not costly, but enough to raise money for whatever they needed. The sisters were cordial, and seemed to enjoy that we had come to visit them. They were dressed in the Appalachian dresses that you see in their final photos here. I don’t know exactly when I heard that they had both died, but I knew this as an older child - so that tells you how much reach their notoriety had, especially since we didn’t live near the Smokies. I always wondered, as a child, why anyone would want to live so deep in the woods, away from modern civilization. Though, I noticed that they were fully conversant, spoke with an Appalachian accent, and didn’t seem to mind the lifestyle - didn’t want to leave their home. There must’ve been a lot of love in that family and much sentimental feeling toward the memories they shared there. I wonder if I had lived there as a youth, could I have resisted the “pull” of city life? Would I have been educated and conversant? The trends toward modernization would pull heavily on all Americans as the years proceeded. I think we are better off in many ways, but we should never forget the values that caused us to survive and treat each other as part of our large human family, all valuable and worthy of respect. Thank you for the video. I’m now 64 years young, so I’m aware of the approaching issues of being a Senior, and remembering the things that make life meaningful. Hard work, loyalty, skills, love, and a connection to our Creator.
I'm Dixie Walker Stevens. Stayed with them while my family did their shows and I went to 1st grade at Greensboro school. I have the little blanket that was made for me by my Aunt Louisa. I'm waiting for my car to come in and I will come and visit. I'm 72 years old today. My family found steamer trunks because I once was a child star. Looking forward to seeing everything.
This video should be presented somewhere in the national park- stunning presentation. As our friend Bob and I have discussed, one of the biggest crimes in the UA-cam world is that Quest Capsule doesn't have hundreds of thousands subscribers and views. Salute to you Scott. Hopefully this helps you toward the audience you deserve.
Smoky Mountain Family!! Thanks so much for the kind words, support and including Quest Capsule in the 12-Day giveaway lineup! Means a lot!! Merry Christmas to your family and everyone dropping by the channel! 🎅🎄-Scott

The Smoky Mountain Family sent me! WOW, such a wonderful video. I have read alot about the Walker Sisters and your video was such a joy to watch. Thank you! Big thank you to the Smoky Mountain Family for sending me your way.
Thank you for sharing the history of the Walker Sisters. Such an eloquent tribute to them and their lives. It touched my heart - and I hope that their story will not go into the night and that their footsteps will never disappear. Without the past, we would have no future.
Thank you Mr. Donnie I look forward to your videos ever week! I'm from Knoxville but live in Massachusetts now. My grandparents were from Bryson City and I roamed those mountains when I was a kid I'm just home sick 🏞️
Breaks my heart that these five sisters had to sell their land for such a small amount and had to give up their way of life. I wonder how many other families were put into the same situation? I guess it was necessary so there could be a Smokey Mt Park regardless of lives being disrupted are not!
The Smoky Mountain Family sent me!!! Cant believe i haven't came across your channel before i love documentaries. And that's what this reminded me of will definitely be checking out more of your videos.
"The Smokey Mountain Family sent me" I really enjoyed your video. As a retired teacher,I love continuing to learn new things, especially about an area that I love.
We live in Maryville and take day trips from time to time. I hiked here yesterday from the parking lot on Wears Valley Rd to the school house. Then continued up to the Walker cabin. Got about 3/4 of the way and turned back. But will return and finish the hike. It was great to see what I missed from your video. Well done production and especially your narration. Thank you
The Smoky Mountain Family Sent me!!! Wow so glad they did this and I found your channel what beautiful-videos!!! Will be watching you all the time now!!
Its amazing to see the peices of newspaper still clinging to the walls. If You look up old photos when they were still using the cabin, You can see the walls were covered in newspapers. Im guessing for insulation.
