Best solution for the crank: buy a Shorty ratchet socket wrench at Harbor Freight, remove the crank handle, find the snuggest socket and epoxy ( I used the putty type) to the shaft. Problem solved.

On my 24" the slots start 4" of each end, and are 2" long
