Karen could be the greatest most natural female singer ever. She was soo great they nicknamed her one take Karen because many times she was perfect the first time she recorded. A most beautiful voice with perfect pitch and tone. No computer BS! She was also a bad ass drummer for real. She died at only 32yrs old from an eating disorder, it weakened her fragile heart. I never get tired of hearing her sing and never will, and will ALWAYS miss her.

Karen has that affect on people, of soothing them when they hear her voice. I can't help but think her tone is somehow "universal" in its calming nature. Definitely my favorite singer of all time. Her brother, Richard, who sings beside her, arranged most of their music, co-wrote several songs, accompanied her on the piano and sang harmonies. Really a talented guy. "We've Only Just Begun" is their signature song. I absolutely love it and all of their music. Nice reaction. Thanks for sharing.

Karen and Richard were the only singers. Richard produced most of these recordings and overdubbed their voices to create the amazing harmonies you hear. They were a huge huge act in the early 70s. Karen is my favorite female singer. Karen Carpenter sang like an angel! Her drumming was really great also. It was a very sad day in 83 when we lost her to anorexia. The world lost one of the most beautiful people. She wa beautiful in her singing, she was beautiful in her appearance, and she was beautiful in her soul. Such an amazing woman that was taken way too early. I was very fortunate to get to see her in concert way back when. Even got to meet with her, her brother, and the whole band back stage. They were all wonderful! If anorexia hadn't taken over her, I can't even imagine all the great music we would have been blessed to hear.
Now, to get to something different. I love your reactions and want to see you react to something a little (ok, maybe a lot) different. Please react to Guns and Roses song "November Rain" the official music video. The song and video are incredible and full of surprises. You will be amazed at the amount of views it has.

I've always said the music of the 60's and 70's were the golden age of Pop and Rock music. So young Lady you seem to like the oldies, the beautiful smile on your face while listening to "Words" by the Bee Gees was worth a 1000 words. So I'm going to request a reaction to a song from the mid 1960's . The song " Our day will Come" by Ruby and the Romantics. The lady singing along with the music is just amazing. Her name is Ruby Nash and is or was still out performing the last few years.

Karen, one of the greatest voices and Richard, self taught pianist and keyboard player who also did the arrangements. I remember the Crocker Bank commercial this was written for. You can actually find it on UA-cam sung by the writer, Paul Williams. Richard heard it and called and asked if there were more verses. It launched Paul's career. The rest is history. The back ground vocals are a device that multiplies their voices. I still listen to the Carpenters when I want beautiful melodic music.

An unparalleled enigma of huge talent and low self esteem, reflected by her own assessment as 'a drummer who sings'. No matter how often I enjoy the truly great popular music female voices like Judy Durham, Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt, I always arrive back at the conclusion that Karen Carpenter was simply in a league of her own.

Karen Carpenter was one of the finest female vocalists of the twentieth century (probably any century). Fine drummer as well. Gone far too soon, from complications of an eating disorder, in February 1983. This song was Carpenters' third single release and second monster hit. It was written by Paul Williams and performed by him for, of all things, a bank commercial; Richard, Karen's genius pianist/arranger brother and the other half of Carpenters, saw the ad, loved the song and arranged to cover it.
You ask about Carpenters' backing vocals. This early in their career (this song is from their second album, in 1970), the backup singers are...Richard and Karen. Multitracked, in a fashion inspired by Les Paul and Mary Ford's pioneering work in the late 1940s. The incredible smoothness ("almond milk"...love it) comes from the fact that all the voices you hear are really just two, and beautifully matched sibling voices at that. They could also produce an impressive group sound multitracked solo. From Karen's unreleased 1980 solo album (it did get released in tribute after she died), here's a spectacular vocal arrangement featuring just Karen..."If I Had You": ua-cam.com/video/JDYTIjhQvNI/v-deo.html And from Richard's 1987 solo album "Time", here's his "When Time Was All We Had"...ua-cam.com/video/NzIGeJAUssM/v-deo.html

The carpenters were comprised of Karen and Richard Carpenter, a brother and sister duo. The back up singers about which you spoke, we’re actually Karen and Richard themselves. They went back in post production and did the back up singing which is also why the voices sound very familiar. Unfortunately, Karen fought anorexia, and her declining health finally culminated in her death in 1983. Richard had his own bouts with addiction to Quaaludes, but finally managed to beat it. He is still Active writing and producing music. He also hosts a fundraiser benefiting young musicians. This song was very popular at wedding receptions for many years, and is still occasionally used.

Karen Carpenter used to get me through those lonely nights during college. The backup singer is her brother.
