Very helpful as I brought a new stereo and the red wire comes of the wiring loom and is not part of the block connectors that makes no sense at all but now I know to go of the cigarette so not to kill the battery. 👍
Great video. Another bonus to doing it with the cigar socket from the jump (instead of cutting the dash cam plug and using a step up or step down transformer) is that if you ever decide to replace the dash cam, you're not having to go through all the dash cam hard wiring again. Just unplug the old one and plug in the new one.
Nice. Thanks for the idea What other way to power aftermarket powered seats and powered windows. Right now the powered windows are directly connected to the battery and I think that be why low all the time. Yiur help is well appreciated
Got a question can I tap power from another source to make my aftermarket radio work in my 2001 honda accord lx, there is a wiring issue, all the fuses are good but I have no clock, radio, dash lights or tail lights or radio, I need my music is there another way to get power to the unit? If so how?
I’m a new subscriber… I found your video very helpful…my issue is I installed halo led lights… I want to tap power from the cigarette lighter, would I also need an inline fuse?
I have a 2013 dodge avenger, with two sundown subs and 1200 watt high phonics amp, and jvc aftermarket head unit. Well I unplugged it one day and now when I connect it back my stereo will not power on . I unhooked something connected to the lighter or where my heat and ac controls are
Im new to wiring and stuff. Im installing 3 led kits all 12v. Gonna be using a 12 gauge wiring and hooking all of the kits to the single wiring into a 20 amp fuse tap. I did research and i shouldnt have to worry about my wire being too long right? Should I use a relay? Also cant i just connect all of my ground wire from my 3 led kits to the same ground wire or do they have to be separate for some reason?
Question for you. If I’m doing an ambient lighting kit, would it kill me to use the smaller gauge illumination? I want the lights to turn on when I unlock the car not with the turn key
this may sound like a ridiculous question- but HOW did you get the plug out in the first place?! I dont see a clip on mine, and dont want to damage the socket.
So let me ask... is there a way to wire a LED Hood strip & LED Rock lights together.....BUT wire them to work on a 12V power cigarette/supply. That I can manually plug in when I want to run them and unplug when I don't? Now the power may vary I assume, where as the LED Strip pull MAYBE 5 amps/volts and LED Rocks run 12V. So is there a way to combine both into a plug in type power source that runs both???
Quick question I have I Vw golf mk6 and he fitting a usb kit off eBay around the usb is led lights the plugs into the back of the cigarette lighter and it drained my battery even though when you turn the ignition off the lights on the USB part goes off which I didn’t understand. I’ve bought a new battery so hopefully this fixes it but does it need a bypass switch sometimes with these kits they’re about 20 quid on eBay
Is the cigarette lighter ground wire ground all the way back to the battery or just straight to the chassis? I'm about to install a UHF radio and want to avoid interference from the alternator and also avoid getting the ground wire through the firewall.
Hi great vid, quick question. If I tap the cigarette source to convert a 5v usb input to a 12 volt input will that divide my original 12 volt input source? Should I need to take anything in consideration before continuing?
So whenever you add a device to a DC circuit you lower the current (amps) and the voltage stays the same. AC circuits amps stay the same and voltage lowers. You will always get a slight "voltage drop" due to copper loss and other factors (resistors etc). If you buy a socket like that it likely has a "step down converter" from 12v to 5v built into the socket. Always check the specs of what you are buying to be sure that it functions as intended.
What would you recommend if I had 2 12v plugs to do? Meaning, off my one 12 v cig lighter, can i tap into it w/ a dual female socket so I can run 2 devices like a dash cam and cb radio?
Question: if you connect your dash cam this way into the ignition wire, am I assuming correctly that the dash cam function that it comes on when someone bumps your car won’t work? Do you need extra wiring and some kind of power box for that?
yes, you need a +12v power source that's present when the car is off. Most of the time you can have a 3-wire solution with the dashcam, or a manual switch to put it in "parking" mode.
man my radio wire burned up and i don't want to spend 200-300 dollars on a whole new dash harness. will I be able to tap the radio 12v constant into the cigarette lighter port? Im a noob and seeking a solution to this dilemma
Great channel, and excellent video's. If you ever get a chance perhaps a video on tap fuse box to connect fog lights. Thanks for sharing your talents. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank ya for the helpful little video, buddy. Sounds like you do this type of stuff all the time, and I could always use a little help when I'm doing this sorta thing, - so I went ahead and liked and subscribed for both of us lol.. commenting now for the ol algorithm. Thanks again, bud 👍👊
if you tap into anything going to the battery then whatever your powering up will constantly stay on. you want to tap the ignition side or key side so your accessories cut off when the car cuts off and does not drain your battery
are those ciggarette lighters al the same? i have 1 in the back seat of my van, i want to use it to connect my remote turn on wire to power up my amplifiers
nope you have to check and make sure that the cig lighter comes on and off with the key. sometimes the cig lighter stays 12volts all the time and you cant use that for the amp
Then you want to test to make sure it's constant or ignition if you have something like a car charger you can plug it would be easiest. Plug it with the car off if it charges the phone or a light comes on then it's constant if you only get power when you turn the car on the you have accessory
I’m glad you made this video! I recently had a shop do a install on my car, and when I tried plugging my dash cam into my cigarette lighter it dosent work . Is that supposed to happen once you tap into the lighter?

Thanks for the video. What is the difference between tapping directly into the wires or doing it in a separate pickyback fuse?
Super helpful video! I have a dashcam installed already, and I'd like to hide the plug behind my dash like you're doing. Keep up the nice work :)

Be honest I didn't know the key and battery symbols were different. Learned something new

Great video. I wished my 2011 Ford Fusion was that easy. Well the illumination wire was easy but I went to the fuse block for the RED wire :o(

Am try to locate the power outlet fuse for my Honda step wagon 2013
Will that drain out the battery continues on charge even when car is off?

Very helpful for things I'm trying to do to my car. Thanks brotha!
Excellent and to the point. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Can I use this method to wire in gps tracker that will charge when the light comes on and will the cigarette lighter still work?
Very detailed explained everything on point thanks

I wonder before I jump on this project I am doing, while the ignition cable stop giving power when I turn the key to turn on the engine.
Update, I checked both Cig and Outlet Power and when you crank the motor they turn off. So this will not work for me.
Can the 12v ignition wire work when i put an extra wire to the radio.
Damn no on answered that’s my question too
Thank you nice video
This video help me a looooot, thanks bro 😎

Silly question; Why wouldn’t you want to tap into the one running to the vehicle battery?

Hey JP great video thanks for the info.
No problem man
Thanks man this helped me out a lot

@@jptheinstallguy 😂 duhh, i mean the wires they have
Good quick video man…what if my socket doesn’t have the key or battery symbol?
It just says 12V/120W

Great in depth video
thanks carlo 💯
Can I do this without the fuse tap?
couldn't you cut out the resistor in the plug and just add it in to a wire tap?
we make fuse and fuseholder and wire harness for car
Good looking out dawg thanks
I’m glad you made this video! I recently had a shop do a install on my car, and when I tried plugging my dash cam into my cigarette lighter it dosent work . Is that supposed to happen once you tap into the lighter?
no it probably doesnt work anymore because they may have left it unplugged or possibly blown the cigarette lighter fuse in the fuse box
Good video
Hey mate, great video. What is that tester tool called? Thanks
Multimeter
Powerprobe III
Can you safely use a female cigarette socket the way you did in this vid whithout a fuse holder ?
Hey man! Do you have to have an fuse on the cable if the lighter already has a fuse? And is it possible to use a blue wire tap?
I want to install a 160W underseat subwoofer
And also, can you tap your ground into the ground of the sig lighter?
I would still fuse it just to be safe and you should run a new ground for the sub amp
why not cut both lighter plugs and connect it directly? is it possible or a NAY?
I tried putting my charger for my cellular phone. And it blew out my stereo
Lol if you need the watts that wont cut it for a gmrs radio
What if I only have one lighter
That's OK as long as it is a power source you need
Why not use a buck converter hooked up to a switch/rocker switch? It’s much smoother bruv
Because you then have to remember to turn on and off a switch every time, and you’d be left with one fewer 12v outlets. Not very smooth, sweetie.
Darn.
My guess is that this car is burned up by now..
😂
Why so?
