walletopia Even if I didn’t carry goins (which I do), I’d still use this wallet as my daily driver without thinking twice because 1) its coin compartment can easy fit my key and 2) the construction that separates the layers of leather makes it INCREDIBLY easy to smoothly separate each bill and pull out just the one you need, which is something cash wrap wallets (in my experience, Wingback’s and Trove’s) normally struggle with.
I like almost everything about it but the snap on the outside. I don’t know why but I think I’d prefer a magnetic attachment or some other unique fastening method.
Nate Bortolini I had a jacket with a strong magnetic fastening that stopped working in about 18 months. Although I see your point and know that a magnetic fastener gives it a cleaner aesthetic (which some prefer; I don’t always), the button fastener gives it more durability in the long run.
I have had this one for a long time. I never use coins. The coin slot literally takes no space and you will not be bother by it. i usually slide in it a flat pin used to remove phone SIM cards or a key
I own it and one hidden feature worth mentioning is the following. It is possible to put up to 5 or 6 coins next to each other and /or above each other inside the coin compartment. If you then close the wallet the coins usually stay in position because of the build structure. As a result those coins add only approx. 2mm of bulk.
I had this wallet for 6 months now and since then it is my everyday carry and it is brilliant...I watched your previous review on the Abrasus slim wallet, went to the website but chose this instead since I needed a small front pocket wallet that can handle my cash, coins and cards in a light compact carry.Great episode...thanks Mark👍🏼
walletopia I have the embossed leather type and it is holding up very well. I managed to put 4 cards only since one of my cards is embossed. I noticed that the card compartment is not stretching( my be due to the nature of the leather or the design)so I never experienced cards falling out!
Shiva Kumar Hey...it causes a little bulge in the front pocket but acceptable...the fact it is light weight you barely feel that you are carrying something!
@@walletopia Ah, no wonder it is difficult to search for wallet that hold coins in US. I really like leather and US has a lot of good leather epecially Cordovan! This Japanese wallet open my eye though. I live in Malaysia and we use cash and coins heavily.
I loved your review of this wallet and absolutely fell in love with its design and elegance. Next, I went online and ordered it. Here’s where it gets really good... that same night they emailed me and said sorry, due to COVID we can’t ship to the U.S. I must admit though, I was very impressed by how efficiently they charged my credit card 😂
LOL, oh I bet, every company wastes no time to charge your card. Another option is to use a proxy forwarding service if you really want to pursue it. When a Japanese company won't ship to the US (whether it's COVID or otherwise), I use zenmarket.jp/
I like that having cash in there doesn't block other compartments dysfunctionally (like some other wallets where access to certain card slots are just gone if you have cash in there). It's 97% there, if the coin compartment had a transparent window (so that it could serve alternatively as an ID holder), I'd say it's perfect.
Nice mark you did their small wallet, yeah when i looked up before i was shock about the price lol, i remember a vid even a japanese guy stated it was so expensive , but man their design are great, and saw their unique coin wallet too lol.. its what i call a complete wallet (it could hold coins ) thats very rare. Thanks again.
@@walletopia damn... they aren’t shipping to the US. I’m taking it as a sign to not buy a wallet that costs this much. Any recommendations for 7-8 cards, cash folded in half, and holds a small pen (like a space pen) or an aaa flashlight?
Great to hear! I've two more of their wallets I'll be reviewing soon, their leather offerings. Amazing designs with their seams that achieve the thinness, so impressive.
You missed the little hole for adding ring to attach key. I saw this wallet in a what's in my bag/purse video and was drawn to it being simple and I also only have a single house key.
I’d forgotten how talented you are Mark! Brilliant intro. and I really like that wallet. Looks better (in my eyes) than the Trove and it hurts me to say that because the Trove is UK made and I really want to support them, but just cannot. Great review 😀👍🏻 EDIT - That price 😮 what the hell they thinking? 😭 It would be £116 by the time it got to my door here in the UK.
Thanks Richard, you're very kind. Yes, the price grabs you a bit, too bad really and the quality is top notch. Japanese made, they rarely make anything poorly.
I agree with you on quality. I have some hand made journals from an elderly man in Japan and they are just superb. Their quality and ‘state of mind’ just lends itself to absolutely incredible gear.
To all long term users of this fantastic looking wallet. I know that this question has come up already, but I still wonder if cards can accidentally slip out? What is if less than 5 cards are inserted and does the card compartment widen by time? These are the only thoughts which keep me off from making a purchase.
My wallet holds 6 cards (2 credit cards, an ATM card, drivers license, health insurance card and my public transportation card). Even if I take one card out it doesn’t really slip out. As for the stretching; the card slot was tight at first, but eventually the wallet stretched enough for the sixth card to fit in comfortably. I bought this wallet in April of 2015 and I can say it is the best wallet I’ve purchased. Hope this helps!
I use the abrasus slim wallet. It does widen if you have more than 3 and if its been widened the cards can fall out if shaken enough. This is only thing stopping me from using it as a daily driver. I left it for 10 days without using it and it became tight again. I dont use it for travel tho. Only when im in my town
I don't have long-term experience with it, others who have used it could comment. The vertical grip on the cards is good, so when you insert there is friction in order to keep them in place. Once the wallet has broken in over time, I imagine it's possible.
The leather does stretch. I currently have three cards in the compartment. If I remove one, the other will immediately fall down. That's after 10 years of use though. I honestly do not remember if 2 cards in there from the beginning actually work
Really great design! But the price😬 I would be curious to see a comparison with the Kamino wrap wallet with coin pocket who have the same capabilities.
Great suggestion! Almost every Japanese wallets is a premium. Kamino is an exception, but most are fairly expensive and shipping is also higher than normal international shipping.
I had the frenchie Speed Wallet Mini (sold it). Now I own the Abrasus small Wallet. Both great wallets. If you don't need coins, the frenchie could be the better choice because you can Access both cards and bills really fast. Also it looks and feels great and is very compact. However if you need to handle coins, the Abrasus small Wallet is amazing. And it is even smaller than the frenchie.
@@mesebeppojan yes I was considering abrasus too because coins are quite common in India. Also, from where did you get the abrasus mini because i can't find one Amazon (India)?
Nice review, I'm liking this one that I might buy one myself 😅. By the way I don't know if you've seen the Tokyo cartolare hammock compact, hopefully you can review it.
I literally choked on my drink when I heard the damn price. That's WAY too expensive for a wallet in my book. The reinforced" stitching on certain points do seem to maybe make it more durable - but that small strap inside and between the coin pocket and the cash would bug me to no end just because it's there. I get that it's supposed to hold the wallet flush - but it's like adding an unnecessary extra step when sewing both halves shut would have been easier in the design. I guess they just want it to be fancy-schmancy.
Not a fan of it closing with a button. Would have been nicer if it used a magnet instead. The button makes it look like something a grandma would carry
Proven snap closure, I do like magnets as they're sleeker and, but I would be concerned that magnets would hold it shut well enough in this case. Plus the magnets being placed directly against the card portion in front would be problematic for demagnetization to gain the magnet strength needed to keep it closed. The Pitaka wallet (which we'll be publishing a review on soon) is a big example of that problem. BUT that said, it would be interesting to experiment with this to see if it could be done. Having the visual on this be just leather on the exterior makes it that much more of a clean look.
QOTD: ⚡ If you don't usually carry coins, would you still consider carrying this wallet? If so, why?
walletopia Even if I didn’t carry goins (which I do), I’d still use this wallet as my daily driver without thinking twice because 1) its coin compartment can easy fit my key and 2) the construction that separates the layers of leather makes it INCREDIBLY easy to smoothly separate each bill and pull out just the one you need, which is something cash wrap wallets (in my experience, Wingback’s and Trove’s) normally struggle with.

Pros: compact, light, durable and easy to use.
Cons: limited on the number of cards it can carry, price is on the high side.

Wallets targeting the US market don't care much for coins as they're not used as heavily as outside the US. It's a tricky thing to do right.

How many cards are required for adequate friction to prevent them from falling out?
