You know what you said about how floor keeps it up and light backing Marco? Well prepare to have that utterly shredded to bits. Seriously, listen to "Yours is an empty hope", and you'll see just how crazy Floor's range and versatility is when backing Marco.
Nightwish is one of the rare bands that actually feel like a band. Floor as no issue being backup singer and does not steal the spotlight at all, which is pretty impressive imho.
"...voice that's been working for a while". Spot on, Marco first started singing in Tarot along with his brother. Tarots first album came out in 1986 and is called Spell of iron. Marco is actually offically still a member of Tarot but its been put on hiatus.
You gotta hear Star One live. Floor and her sister Irene did back up vocals for the band on their small tour. They recorded it with just a couple of cameras and it's like a super band of underrated (but awesome) performers
@@Fabi72g Yes, she turns to smile at him and applaud him as he walks back to the stage. Nothing about Nightwish is fake. Note also Tuomas, playing with enthusiasm for a song Marco wrote.
that's another great thing about this band: everyone plays and sings together. for the next reaction I suggest "sleeping sun" from the same concert (tampere 2015), a small song in a great performance.
Marco put out a solo album in both Finnish and English. I couldn't wait and went ahead and got the Finnish version as soon as it was released ($2.50 shipping from a record store in Finland ftw!). It's awesome. There are a couple of vids out for it; you should check out The Voice of My Father (and the Finnish version Isani Aani).

It's HIS song in all aspects of it, and knowing Tuomas they won't play songs that doesn't "sit right" with them at any time (which is why we'll never hear Master Passion Greed or Bye Bye Beautful live). I'm happy for Marko and his personal life, but man what a blow to us Nightwish fans..
What I love about this is that he didn't look back at the main stage once, not even when the band were supposed to come in. How much trust must they have in each other that he didn't have to check that they were all ready? I know the toms came in to count them all in, but it was all just...fluid. I know that, out there and isolated in the middle of the crowd, there's absolutely no way I'd have the willpower to avoid even glancing back for a fraction of a second.
To understand just how good Marco is you should know that at the end of the 1990s, Marco Hietala was operated for a polyp in the throat. The surgery had nasty consequences. Marco, for example, was losing his voice as a result of unsuccessful surgery. In his Stainless Life biography Marco explains how, in the late 1990s, he drew attention to the special distortion in his voice. The doctor found the left side of the vocal cords polyp and recommended that the surgery. Marco agreed - and regretted his decision. "The doctor said he had to use force to go to the polyp, but it shouldn't be a problem," Marco says in his book. The voice should return to normal in a couple of weeks. This was not the case. At first, the situation was so bad that he couldn't sing at all. In an interview with Savon Sanomat he recalls that the situation was very distressing, even desperate. - I lost the channel and ability, through which I had largely built my personality and my whole life. This could be compared to a sprinter who has to sit in a wheelchair with broken legs. I thought, what I should do with my life?, Marco says. The loss of sound has not been raised earlier by him because "It was late 90s, and my visibility to the people was not high". The story has a happy end as Marco's voice has been in a good shape for a long time. However, it has required a lot of work over the years. he points out that the voice never returned to pre-operative levels. - My clear upper falsetto was totally killed by that operation, he says in his book: - Much later from the left side of my vocal cords, was found a permanent nerve damage, that was caused from that operation. That is, the left and right sides of the vocal cords do not sync with each other properly. Well, in the name of honesty: I have managed with them. If you would like to hear more of Marco's singing then you should try While Your Lips are Still Red and High Hopes Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd.
It's experiences like this that bring out the best technique in singing. This song particularly is fantastically sung by Marco. His style is so crisp and unique
It also helped that during that time, or at some point in his career, he had to hire a vocal coach to help him with his singing, as well as his range... Some unknown vocal coach named Floor Jansen.
Also Marco had been in bands/lead singer, had and been in his own bands. For longer than nightwish was ever thought of, but has and always done his own thing, very well, and his voice now, is after a messed up throat surgery. Where he had to relearn to talk.
