It is nice that finally they have a female singer who can give him run for his money.
Marko is beloved by so many. His stage presence and personality combined with his vocal skill & versatility bring comments about how much stunning talent Nightwish has. Most bands would kill for even one of the bands singers.
Has anybody ever seen a band with so equality between members? Floor as back voice, flute guys get his own song etc... they just love and enjoy every single second they play since Floor joined!

Pavol Ridrich and they are so so talented all of them on theire own. I don't know any other band with such complete skill, talent and versatility as Nightwish. Each one of them is a true star!

It was so nice to see someone take the time to check out Marko's vocals. Thank you so much. he is quite the musician. Plays the bass guitar, guitar, sings, and also writes music. I think he may do 1 or 2 more instruments, I just can't think of them right now. Marko is the only singer on Nightwish's cover of the Pink Floyd song "High Hopes" sung live at the End of an Era show. He is really amazing in this song. Besides Marko it is so great to see the guys do a whole song by themselves. They blew me away with how they made the song their own.

Marko plays also double bass, cello, drums and somewhat piano too, but of course people doesn't see that so often. He used double bass on Nightwish's Slow Love Slow video and on few smaller gigs, cello he played on his solo tour. Drums he has played only on random bar/club gigs in Finland with random bands and just for fun.
Marko has as many arrows he can take from his quiver as the rest of the band. Allround musicians the lot of them. Not surprising when Arjen Lucassen asked him to use him solely as a singer, not for his prowess on the bass. And look through the list of singers he uses/used regularly, it is mind blowing.

Marco used to be the lead vocalist for Tarot, not a terribly well known band outside of power metal circles bit easy enough to find on YT if you want to hear him do the main vocals. In general European metal is a lot like European royal houses of old, there's lots and lots of inbreeding.
I love Tarot!! Love their concert "Undead indeed".... They harmonize eachother so... Love Tommie´s voice too. Good to see another who knows of them. Pitty they don´t exist now....
That's so true, it's not even funny. Like, Marco joined in on Ayreon, a project that Floor has already been a part of for decades. And Floors little sister Irene was part of the one and only ever Ayreon live concert. (Btw, the whole cast of Ayreon is crazy impressive, like Simone Simons, Hansi Kürsch, Sharon den Adel, Bruce Dickinson, Tobias Sammet and many more). Floor has had several guest appearances at Epica, whose vocalist (Simone) is a very dear friend of hers and whose founder Mark Jansen was also the founder of 'After Forever', the first band that Floor joined while still in high school (some fun facts: When Mark left 'After Forever' Floor was already main vocalist and she managed the band nearly completely on her own while finnishing high school and then studying at the Rock Academy. In the meantime Mark did found 'Epica' for his new girlfriend Simone, both then separated but are still both in the band and are getting along well while each being married to other partners.).
Also, Floors husband is the drummer of Sabaton, a swedish metal band that is popular for singing about WW1 and WW2 themes from all kinds of angles. And Sabaton worked together frequently with the producer Peter Tägtgren (as well as other bands like Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, etc), the vocalist and band leader of 'Pain' and 'Hypocrisy'. He is also involved as an instrumentalist with 'Lindemann', the solo project of the vocalist of Rammstein. And lastly, Peter is the husband of Anette Olzon, the previous vocalist of Nightwish.
I can go on forever...
I'm telling you, it's because of those Heavy Metal Open Air Festivals all over Europe during summer, they bring those bands together if they want to or not. That's where spontaneous guest appearances happen all the time.
I believe Marco just had a single come out called "Stones"
Months ago, he's actually released about 3 to 4 of them from his album. The English version of the album anyway. He released the Finnish version last year.
You need to hear more Marko.. Check it out "While your lips are still red" from Wembley... It's a masterpiece

Now that you have heard his celtic vocals, you should listen to his softer side. "Kiss While Your Lips are Still Red" live from Wembley arena 2015. Marco was a lead singer in his previous band and he does sing a lot in Nightwish. We all love Marco and his softer side as well. Marco harmonizing so well with Floor. Their 2 voice really compliment each other. The masculine and the feminine. A perfect balance. Very well done and great analysis again SS-T!

That is such a beautiful song. I don’t speak Finnish, but the language sounds so lovely and way he sings it I prefer it over the English version.
Here is a curiosity that might interest you - Marco has done quite a few Xmas-time concert/festivals in his time and apparently part of that tradition is to do Ave Maria duet with a male and a female vocalist. So if you look on YT, there is Marco duets with Floor, with Tarja, with Elize Ryd (Amaranthe)... quite impressive.

It's not freetime really, it's a huge production nowadays. Been in the crowd for 11yrs now. From small clubs to arenas. My Christmas starts with them.

Oh yes, there is sooo much more. I've been a gig of his to his "Pyre of a Black Heart' solo tour last febr in Amsterdam. I'm grateful to have been, he and the band made me feel so free I windmilled my hear around at the last song, a cover of War Pigs (my long time favorite)........ can't remember the last time I did that..... Anyway, the album, in both Finnish and English is a GEM. Soothing in these times. But he album that keeps me sane nowadays, helps me reenergize and see the world with open heart & eyes every day is: "Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck' ~ Tuomas Holopainen... 3x a day for 2 wks now, it's a blessing. Great reaction on Marko - and then it is time for Dead Boy's Poem from Buenos Aires 2018. It is a beautiful power ballad, where you can see how Nightwish have evolved during the years with Floor. Look closely to her stage presence - she totally controlles the audience and the music - and she is using her lower register in this one 🤘🤘🤘

Marko just released a solo album. And apart from that I would recommend watching High Hopes (live 2005), While your lips are still red and there is a video of him signing black Sabbath as a lullaby to Jukka's (previous Nightwish drummer) baby. So fun!

Marko sings backup on MOST Nightwish songs, has parts in MANY Nightwish songs, and has a few that he's lead vocalist. He also sang lead vocals in Tarot for 30 years, has sung as a guest for several bands, mostly Delain, and has a solo project.

He has a very recent solo album, both in Finnish and in English, which is super cool. There's a live version of Star, Sand and Shadow I would really recommend. This might be my favorite Nightwish reaction of yours - I think Marko gets a lot of love, but people rarely give him the same kind of attention to detail. He's a master of his craft as well.

He has done a Pink Floyd cover of "High Hopes", and released an album a few months ago called "Pyre Of The Black Heart". "Stones" is probably the best known song of the album, but my favorite is "I Am The Way".

Everyone of the members of Nightwish are amazing in their own right but put them all together and they are out of this world. One of the things I love about them is that there are no egos, no ' look at me I'm the best' , they're all there together, having a great time ❤️

His High Hopes vocals are awesome.
So as a quick explanation to the vocal damage you mentioned, back in the late 90's, he had to have surgery done to remove a polyp from the side of the throat. The operation got complicated and it not only changed the entire tone of his voice, but also took away his ability to do vibrato for years. He had to train constantly just to get that back and he's never quite sounded the same.
On the upside? The raspy, nasally edge to his voice was also a side effect of the surgery and that's basically his iconic sound now.

You should check out Endlessness from their newest album. It primarily features him again and he holds some awesome notes in the chorus. I don't think there are any live versions yet because of the pandemic, but it's still great. :)

Yes, I read something about that too, don't remember where. Mind you, what I read was second hand information and hearsay, add to that my crappy and sometimes sporadic memory so this might be wrong altogether.
Think his doctor wanted to remove a polyp in his throat or on a vocal chord, it was recommended but not necessary(?). The doctor said "it's nothing to worry about, you will be back singing again in 3 weeks". It turned out not be the case, he couldn't sing at all and had to start from scratch and learn to sing again.

He has been known for his vocals as well, even outside of Nightwish. Though he is far from being a member of the band he has performed on nearly every album released by Delain. He also joined them on stage on numerous live performances and is considered honorable member of the band. Every performance you can see the bond he has with the band and the fans. :-)

I'm not sure our ears are ready for such a majestic sound.
I saw Nightwish (and Kamelot!) in a small venue in Columbus, Ohio right before Anette Olzen was kicked out of the band. When they played this, it was closer to the studio version. The entire crowd was singing along word for word. There was such a feeling of fellowship in the crowd; I still think it's the most special moment I've had at a concert, and I've been to a lot of concerts.

Marko had a a solo album (both in a Finnish and English version). He was touring in Europe in Jan/Feb of 2020. Marko has a lot of cool clean vocals on some Ayreon tracks in the Theory of Everything album.
I really love your comments because there are so many people who claum to Be singing teacher but know nothing aboutht singing. You have the plasenent and tehcnique so i wan't to say this to you . I am an operasinger so i have studied singing and music over 13 years along...

Marco probably developed his technique from when he started singing in the band Tarot back in 1985. Tarots first album Spell of Iron came out 1986, he's been doing this singing stuff for a looong time :) He is still a member of Tarot (his brother is also in Tarot) but the band has been put on hiatus for now :)
I love the few songs marko does, i have always said if i could have any singers voice it would be marko of night wish or warrel Dane from nevermore. kiss while your lips are still red is another of his songs that's mostly him, it's a beautiful song.

Marco sang demos of the Dark Passion Play album before Nightwish hired Annette. There's a version of Poet and the Pendulum, for example.
