I kinda go over it here: ua-cam.com/video/ChhbQfpV8wk/v-deo.html Dial in all your filters first then set gain. Gain should be the last thing you touch.
iknow u said just fade the speakers so the test tone want damage door speakers well my lci is taped into front speakers which gives signal for subs. so fading to rear will that effect setting gains
Thanks for doing that test I would definitely buy one of those cheap ones not worth it for me to buy something expensive when I'm not a pro thanks again
In fact your right some people just want a good amount of power and crisp and clear sound its not always about max max max max if you have plenty keep it lower more headroom less loss of dynamic range and less harder on your amplifiers........nice vid bro
@@NextLevelCarAudio with a 40 hz test tone and listening at a sub its very very easy to hear the sine wave starting to clip true in the higher freq its a bit more difficult
What do think about buying amplifiers that are too powerful for what they need to power therefore using lower gain underpowering the pre-in and losing dynamic range ?? Myth or it needs to be really really low to happen?❤
I think having a certain amount of headroom is important to not over work your amp. To what extent tho I’m honestly not sure at when or if at any there are any deteriorating factors. Good question tho.
When setting gain on four channel amp just connect the probe to the speaker output as well like for subs have my sub amp gain how I want with the 40 dollar scilscope you mention from Amazon but now I want to set my 4 channel amp
I usually set my gains with a 0dB sine tone as I listen to a lot of non-mainstream trap/EDM. Is there something I can use to figure out what the maximum dB is of songs that I listen to, or can you recommend a dB sine tone I should use for my requirements? I know -5dB is the default but I'm not sure if this might be too much or too little and I'm really looking to maximize my gains. Thanks so much for any help you can give!
I use 0db as well. I also listen to a lot of bass boosted music. I don’t have that knowledge of how to do what your asking. Sorry bro. Maybe someone else will chime in
Hey brother I have a cool video idea!!! So you’ll set the gains by ear and then see how accurate it is by reading the sine wave with that oscilloscope!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for this video! I want to set my gains for my amp however I'm not sure how to turn off the signal to my front speakers so I don't blow them up with a 40hz signal? It's a pioneer avh501ex...any ideas?
If they are crossed over then no issue. Or are they stock speakers running off head unit? If so, just adjust fader all the way to the rear. That will cut out the front almost completely
@@NextLevelCarAudio I am running after market 6.5s directly to head unit. Have my head unit crossovers at 100hz but will now attempt doing the fade option to see if this solves my issue. Thank you!
One question: How to test a big amp for distortion? No scope can take that amount of power right? I mean the output of the amp, turning the gains slowly up to maximum...
I have a video here of my mini scope taking on my 12k just fine. Also, check the video I just released yesterday. Also, in a few days I am releasing a new video with my bench scope and DIY tweeter detector on the amp to show Sine wave and clip point
Iam Computer Engineering student and love to mess with this stuff on my spare time. That O-scope should be good enough for most of us. There is definitely other small parameters but honestly, the difference is minimal if you're looking just to set gains.
@@NextLevelCarAudio I'm having this exact same issue... mine reads from the middle showing the top and bottom of the sine wave. I've watched this and your other video multiple times trying to see if I was setting something wrong. 20v does not give me a large enough window to see the full sine wave with it reading from the middle. (I have your exact "cheap" O-Scope). If someone finds the answer to this issue please let me know!
Will amps clip at different frequency, if my head unit is at its max clean signal and I know ima be playing 30hz, would the lower tuning change where the amp clips at.... or is it clean at any frequency once it’s clean..?
Only if you are boosting certain frequencies.... for example if you are bass boosting say 60hz, but dial in using 40hz 0db tone, the. You will be over clipping when you hit 60hz. So need to be aware, yes.
@@NextLevelCarAudio all good dude. Am sure from this video i can run my dso ya explanation is excellent. Hopfully mew subs and amp be here soon and the rest of my gear can go in. Will defo be using your videos to set it up. Used the smily eq today wow wat a diffremce.
@@NextLevelCarAudio gonna hammer you with a few questions here, if I set my 4 channel for my mids/highs at 100hz on hpf what should I set my sub at? LPF 100hz as well? Or 80hz? My mids and highs have a range between 60hz-22 Khz, is it ok to go lower than 100hz on them? Also you mentioned that we should setup all our EQ settings before setting gains? Can you explain that and what should I set the EQ min/max dial at on my amp that's above my freq dial and below my gain dial? Thanks for all your knowledge!
100 is just fine for sub LPF and mid HPF. You set EQ before gain because if not, you can introduce distortion by increasing the db on your EQ after gain is dialed in.
Great videos!! Can you tell me how exactly you connected your bench top oscope; I got one used and it wont give me a signal? I'm thinking maybe I'm missing correct wires. Thanks.
@@NextLevelCarAudio that's what I did. I wonder what I got wrong or if its faulty. I have a liumy and found absolutely no clipping on my deck , RCA or amps. I find that strange so I wanted to recheck. It's a kenwood excellent deck and monogram alpine for sub and 4 channel bridged to 2 channel for rear sets. Gains and volume are maxed and no clipping on liumy and I hear none by ear.
Hi, need advice. I bought the same O scope from amazon. I have followed your videos to the letter yet i cannot get my O scope to display the clipping wave like you have here. I have my setting set as you do here but i only get very tiny display. Nothing like yours. What am I doing wrong? How can i see the same as you have here? I tested my radio first. Found the distortion is just pas half way up volume. Then I started adjust my amplifier gain. It sounds good but I feel lost. Can you do a video to better show how to manipulate this device better? Thank you. Im installing 2 two channel amps on a 2019 BMW K1600 Grand America using the output of the stock sterio to the input of the amps. It has a line level filter on both designed for this. Front and rear speakers as well.
Advice for one mono amp, one sub, one 4 way channel amp, and after market head unit and speakers would be nice. You have a set up mugs wish they could have (financially).

That’s odd.... must be a faulty scope. If you are manipulating the knobs as described and not even seeing a line. That’s an issue. Does the scope say waiting or triggered when you are playing the test tone
It's cool I definitely figured it out thank you . anyways I just made sure I had a clean sine wave then used my DMM using the square root method to get close to the Watts that I needed to match my subwoofers RMS. then when I went back to the oscilloscope I seen the same voltage that was on my DMM on the vrms of the oscilloscope. So boom there it is. Hey next level... can you read the voltage of how many volts are coming out of that amp on that scope? Let me know cuz I'm going to buy ASAP if it does
@ next level..How does that oscilloscope connect? I see it comes with a 9 volt cord but do I plug that straight into the wall and does that cord converted back to 9-volt I'm confused. Help.. because when I went on the site it says not to use with anything over 9 volt or it will fry it

@@NextLevelCarAudio and then for the signal coming out of the head unit do I attach the meter to the RCA cables that are going into my amp it's a 4 channel amp so which cables am I supposed to hook it up to?...

I seen your other video. You said to test mono for subs on 40hz to set the gain. Now would I use the same thing to set up four channel for speakers (6x9 and 3.5 tweeters)?
I have a Clarion equalizer, and the manual says to have you HU at 80% and only use the eq volume from there only. For me to set the gains I need to have the volume right. Can I have the HU at say 50% and the eq a bit higher? I have a slight hiss at higher volumes, and I figure if I even out the volumes a bit I can possibly remove that hiss. I do know that the gains should be set with a max out volume or until it's just bearable. Just very confused about the volume to setup gains. Thank you!
Slight voltage differential, in some cases more apparent than others. In my case, with how my system is setup and the power I’m running, it did not matter if I had them connected or not, as the results were negligible.
Ok here is a real good question on how do I set my amp gain with a multimeter I have two skar zvx 1ohm dual voice hooked up to a skar skv1500 x1 I have a 2006 caddy dts factory head unit plug and play pre amp hooked to the back of the radio gain turn all the way up on them ok I need 38.72 to read on my multimeter but the highest I’m getting is 10 and that full volume bass eq flat across the board and gain all the way up on amp to is there something I’m missing or doing wrong need help
I know to disconnect my subs when running a 40hz wave , but my front door speakers are connected to my HU. How do I keep the 40hz from running threw those. Do I need to pull HU out and disconnect them ?
You can always adjust fade setting on head unit all the way to the rear. That will pretty much eliminate all input going to your front speakers. Then you are set
my issue is factory radio my lci is tap into the front speakers because ford thats where u get voltage -ohm readid to tap in so can I still fade it rear to set gains
So once I know the clipping point on my head unit and all settings done on head unit. and turn bass knob all the way up and I set my amplifier to before clipping. Should I set the amp right before clipping or back it down some more for safety????. I've blown my sundown x8v3 4 times already. I think because I set my Kenwood double din to volume 29. And sometimes I would go 30 31 32 33 34 and max 35. Maybe that killed my subs. Or the box wasn't built specifically for my sundown x8v3. . I did something wrong. I play nothing but deep bass music no words just bass . I used to play my system to loud too long. Not anymore I turn it up for a little bit then I turn it down for a while. Then every now and then I turn it up to let's say the volume 29 where it's safe. I'm slowly learning how to take it easy. I just wish I had a system i could just bang on for days. I just bought some sundown x10v3. Upgrade time. And I really don't want to blow those new subs. So I need all the advice I can get bro. I appreciate all your videos and helping me. Your videos are so helpful.
Yes. Set head unit volume to max unclipped point. Then set gain to max unclipped on amp. Then DO NOT turn volume knob past that point orb you will be clipping and kill your subs
Hey nextlevelcaraudio last night I heated up my sub and it started to smoke. I was doing some test to set my gain. But I shut it down immediately once I saw it. Should I be worried the sub seems to be fine.
Usually the smoke is just the glue keeping the coil wound that’s heating up and burning off. If you turn it off right away, you may be okay. But the integrity of the coil is probably weakened

My scope doesn't do anything but show error message and very irradiate graph...
Can you do a video on subsonic filter and also when tuning do I set the subsonic filter first and then the gain or reverse
I kinda go over it here:
ua-cam.com/video/ChhbQfpV8wk/v-deo.html
Dial in all your filters first then set gain. Gain should be the last thing you touch.
iknow u said just fade the speakers so the test tone want damage door speakers well my lci is taped into front speakers which gives signal for subs. so fading to rear will that effect setting gains
does anyone know how to change the frequency on one of these units?
Can you tell me where I can find test tones that can be played on a head unit that does not play discs?
Thanks for doing that test I would definitely buy one of those cheap ones not worth it for me to buy something expensive when I'm not a pro thanks again
In fact your right some people just want a good amount of power and crisp and clear sound its not always about max max max max if you have plenty keep it lower more headroom less loss of dynamic range and less harder on your amplifiers........nice vid bro
Thanks!
@@NextLevelCarAudio thanks bro your content is awesome 😎 im trying that o scope today ❤️a big hug man
So I test subs and mid range speakers with 40 hertz and 1000khz with tweeeters ?
That’s what I do
What if you have components and the speakers are wired together?
When setting gain on four channel amp just connect the probe to the speaker output as well like for subs have my sub amp gain how I want with the 40 dollar scilscope you mention from Amazon but now I want to set my 4 channel amp
Yep, that’s it!
I’ve actually Tried that. But have not video recorded it. Maybe in a future video
Thank you!
Awesome. Yes, that would work just fine
Why does my wave start in the middle not rise from the bottom like yours?
In have no idea... never had that issue. Sorry man :/
@@NextLevelCarAudio I'm having this exact same issue... mine reads from the middle showing the top and bottom of the sine wave. I've watched this and your other video multiple times trying to see if I was setting something wrong. 20v does not give me a large enough window to see the full sine wave with it reading from the middle. (I have your exact "cheap" O-Scope). If someone finds the answer to this issue please let me know!
You have to go to the 20v symbol and click the yellow box off of it then turn the adjust knob till it moves from the middle to the bottom
I have to subscribe for sure. Keep it up bro 💪
Thanks for the support!
Would this work on headunit RCA preout to see highest cleanest volume?
Yes
@@NextLevelCarAudio how would one set that up to see max clean volume from rca pre-out connections ?
RCA pre out or low level hardly ever clip even at Max volume. Just set as normal and put one probe on outer sleeve and one on inner.
Any chance ya have a video of the dso nano o scope with x10 leads. Setting mids n highs and subs. Love ya videos from the uk

I have a 4 channel amp running 6x9 for rears and 6.5 components for doors.my question to you is should I set my hpf. Of full or lpf?confused
HPF around 100hz... you don’t want them playing below that. It will sound distorted, below 100hz you need a subwoofer
Thank you
@@NextLevelCarAudio gonna hammer you with a few questions here, if I set my 4 channel for my mids/highs at 100hz on hpf what should I set my sub at?
Thanks.
The clip to negative speaker wire and probe to positive speaker wire. That’s it.
Wow.... that is strange. Did you try tweeter method? Cheap and easy.... I am releasing a video in a couple days going over it.

Im tuning my factory head unit should i keep the oscope at 2v?
Hi bro i want this o scope.
Can u give me link where r can buy....
Just ordered one ! The Luimy one i have is garbage..resolution is so bad i cant see the signal clip until its almost square
I bought the oscilloscope and I cannot get it to work properly at all the sign waves are not show up bigger what am I doing wrong
Great video. Thanks for the information 👍🏽
Advice for one mono amp, one sub, one 4 way channel amp, and after market head unit and speakers would be nice. You have a set up mugs wish they could have (financially).
What do you need help on specifically?

That’s odd.... must be a faulty scope. If you are manipulating the knobs as described and not even seeing a line. That’s an issue. Does the scope say waiting or triggered when you are playing the test tone

So I'm setting my gains on my amplifier right now and it works great but where's the voltage Vmax vmin vpp and vrms which one do I use
I think I might have found it I think it's vpp
So next level do I use VPP yes or no?
Not sure man, I don’t recall and I won’t have my meter with me anytime soon. Away on business now. Sorry
BTW thank you for showing me this oscilloscope I've been wanting to buy one forever but didn't know which one to buy... this was the best one ..easy to use and had the cleanest picture to look for clipping, easier to read than the Liumy..thats for sure...yeeeeeeew💪💪🤙🤙👍👍✌✌🔥🔥
Will it withstand/measure well when Vpeak is > 50V?
It is safe to use it on 800w rms aplifier output? And if it safe it need to be with speakers on or without?
yes safe! without
I just bought the mini oscope. How do you test the deck RCA? I've hooked the clips up to the rcas played a 40hz tone but no wave is shown on the scope
You need to adjust the voltage on the scope. They are low level so sensitivity needs to be set higher to read it properly

Help.. because when I went on the site it says not to use with anything over 9 volt or it will fry it
Some have a 9v battery input, some have 120v ac wall outlet input. Depends on the model you buy
It does display voltage
@@NextLevelCarAudio I just ordered the etepon ...the same exact thing different name... but it comes with one of those plugs . I also ordered one of those little 9-volt battery adapters with a lithium battery rechargeable so I can take it outside or wherever without a cord. But if I wanted to use that cord it came with. do I just plug that straight into 120 volt wall socket that's what I was asking earlier. I don't want to fry it it says it's a 9 volt battery cord . does that power cord convert high-voltage into low-voltage(9v) is all I'm asking?.. I know I'm asking a lot but I'm just curious sorry
Yes. The wall outlet has a voltage regulator as do most handheld electronics. so Its not going to get 120v lol. You good
I got two of those cheap ones, I can't get it to show what yours shows as set up. Any chance you could do a set up on the oscope how you got to those settings on the screen?

Newbee question....What about if you have a DSP ?? is it a different process? Or does it even matter as long as the amp gain is set correctly?
Will give you better stage for your music and quality. But will still need gains set properly as described regardless
hey next level car audio, so i am not using sub woofers but instead four 6x9's two in each saddlebag 's lid as well as four 6.5 speakers in the lower and upper fairings on my motorcycle . do i hook up to audio coming out of head unit first to find clipping there before i move on to the speaker out coming out of the amp? or are there any extra steps that i need to take care of? any and all information that you can provide for me would be greatly appreciated. thank you

I seen your other video. You said to test mono for subs on 40hz to set the gain. Now would I use the same thing to set up four channel for speakers (6x9 and 3.5 tweeters)?
Absolutely, but 1000hz vs 40.

Great video, thanks again
I have a Clarion equalizer, and the manual says to have you HU at 80% and only use the eq volume from there only. For me to set the gains I need to have the volume right. Can I have the HU at say 50% and the eq a bit higher? I have a slight hiss at higher volumes, and I figure if I even out the volumes a bit I can possibly remove that hiss. I do know that the gains should be set with a max out volume or until it's just bearable. Just very confused about the volume to setup gains. Thank you!
That’s totally fine. As long as you don’t go past whatever volume you set your gains at. So that you don’t clip.

rca are low voltage so wont get proper readings

Hey nextlevelcaraudio last night I heated up my sub and it started to smoke. I was doing some test to set my gain. But I shut it down immediately once I saw it. Should I be worried the sub seems to be fine.
